Do you lose reception based on how you hold your phone? An Android Poll

As we all know, the iPhone 4 has issues with how you hold it. Hold it a certain way and *poof* there goes your reception. Steve Jobs said in a press conference yesterday that all modern phones have this issue, including Android phones. I can personally say that I’ve never had an issue with any of my cell phones having an issue with how I hold them, much less my Android devices. What what about you? Does the way you hold your cell phone effect your reception?

We’d like to know. Vote in our poll and if you have noticed that your grip effects your reception, let us know what phone you have in the comments.

After reading Adam and Rio’s comments I went to retest my Nexus One: I tried to cup the phone at the bottom like Adam described and I can’t get any attenuation at all. I used 2 hands to cup the bottom and sides and I get a 12-18dbmv attenuation, but this is a crazy way to hold the phone. I’m in a high reception area with 5 bars, and the tests were done watching the bars and the actual numeric signal strength in the Settings > About > Status screen. Holding it any other way with a single hand lead to negligible change in signal (3-6dbmv, which seems to be regular fluctuation).

  3. Rio says:

I had serious signal problem with Nexus One even after the update. No matter how I hold it the signal starts dropping and in 10, 20 seconds it loses service completely and require me to restart the phone.
And it happens in downtown Manhattan where I would assume I have good coverage.

  4. Adam says:

Nexus one would show a drop in signal when held at the bottom, it was pretty severe and annoying. It would almost always switch from 3g to edge when held like that. Now my Evo 4g will drop a little if you hold it at the top, which I never do. So HTC did things right with the EVO!

As of late I’ve been trying to lose reception by holding my phone. I can’t do it on my decrepit G1.

Sorry in my first post I meant 60 seconds NOT 60 minutes…..sorry for the confusion….

  7. James says:

The only time I have EVER lost signal or dropped calls when holding a phone “wrong” was with my iPhone 4G.
I could reproduce this “feature” on demand. I took it to the Apple store by my house and showed the store manager. I had 5 bars in their store. I held it in my hand the normal way I have ALWAYS held any phone. Within 60 minutes it would lose bars and go to “searching” to “no service” The Apple store manager could reproduce this himself. He tried everything he knew to troubleshoot the issue but difference. I spent 2 hours with him while he ran all kinds of tests and deprovisioning but nothing worked except a case!
Now for context…I had the original iPhone and then upgraded to the 3GS and then to the 4G. I am an staunch Apple fan. I have 2 iMacs, and iPad, iPhone 3G, Macbook and a Macbook Pro so I love Apple products! But they really let us down with this latest iPhone design then constant denial of any problems. I will not buy another iPhone! I returned my 4G and canceled my AT&T line it was on…..they did not charge me amy ETF fees either! I bought a HTC EVO and could not be happier! there is not one app that I could not find in the Market Place. My EVO does everything my 4G did only faster! The only thing I wish was better on my EVO was the battery life…..but I am looking into a aftermarket battery….
So I am a happy switcher!

Just so you know this is only a problem in low signal area. If you live anywhere where you get constant signal you wont have a problem, and nor will any iPhone user.

The problem only manifests itself when you have very low signal strength (the “bars” aren’t directly related to signal strength) and when you touch the phone it will cause a slight drop in the signal strength, which will caused a low of signal entirely in some cases.

This happens on my HTC Desire, my mums T-Mobile G2 (HTC Hero), my old Sony Ericsson C902, my old Moto Razr, my old Nokia 3310 (this one was the ebst at holding signal), my brothers iPhone 2 gen, my dads friends iPhone 3GS and all other phones.

You can only notice this in areas with very low signal strength, namely the bottom floor of my house. It happens with all phones and is not unique to the new iPhone. It may be more pronounced on the new iPhone I accept, however it’s not a unique problem and every single phone ever made has the problem.

I do loose single. Got to wrap both hands round the base of the phone. You would never do this for phoning or general use. So no issues at all for me.

  10. Mark says:

Well, technically, we all lose some signal whenever something is put between the signal source and the antenna. Whether it’s your hand, a Kleenex tissue, or a wolverine, there’s always some attenuation.
The trick is whether it is noticeable or not, or it affects reception to the point that a call is dropped.
