On Thursday Fring released a new version of its mobile application that can now allow for two-way video chatting over Wi-Fi and 3G on (and now between) a variety of platforms including iPhone, Android, and Symbian. In addition to cross platform video calling the app can now support multi-tasking, with a social stream of Twitter, facebook, and IM, as well as adding a new address book that merges your buddy list with your contacts. FaceTime, which was faulted as a breakthrough by Apple, allows only video calling between two iPhone 4 users over Wi-Fi. Now it seems that those same users have a better more flexible alternative. There are a few notes about using Fring. First, it is sure to be taxing on your data plan if you are not on unlimited data. Second, just how good the video quality during calls over 3G is remains to be seen. So give it a try and let us know what you think.
