In a surprise turn of events, it seems T-Mobile fans are eager to get the iPhone on T-Mobile and would rather purchase one over any current Android devices. Right nowy over at TmoNews, there is a poll asking your feeling on iPhone coming to T-Mobile and if you’d purchase one if it did. The topic, “Would You Buy A T-Mobile iPhone?”. The current results of the poll are not in Android’s favor. As of 2 a.m. Pacific time the votes look like this:
- 31% (1,806 votes) Hell yes, come to me Apple!
- 35% (2,051 votes) Only if T-Mobile kept their current pricing.
- 24% (1,412 votes) Absolutely not, AndroidMafia forever!
- 9% (505 votes) Just aren’t interested
- 1% (82 votes) Whats an iPhone?
How is it Android is losing by more than 2 to 1? Could it be related to the popularity of Android or maybe big lack of cutting edge hardware available on T-Mobile’s network?
As far as rumor mills go, there is no official word that the iPhone is coming to T-Mobile in the near future. Will it at some point? It would be logical as it is a GSM phone. T-Mobile would be the most likely carrier to offer the device next. Do I think it would boost customers for T-Mobile? Absolutely! On a business side, bringing the iPhone to T-Mobile would deal quite a blow to AT&T. How many millions of iPhone users are out there already? There are over 3 million of them on the iPhone4 alone. So if even 1/4 of those people changed to T-Mobile, that’s 750,000 new activations. Not too shabby at all. I’m fairly sure more than 1/4 would change over to T-Mobile, especially if the antenna issue gets resolved.
Why am I ranting about the iPhone? If T-Mobile did launch the iPhone, could T-Mobile’s network handle the increased user load on the network’s infrastructure? T-Mobile’s network is more prepared for a device with such a large following. HSPA+ aka 4G, is rolling out to more cities and is expected to cover 185 million Americans by the end of the year. With only one confirmed official HSPA+ capable Android phone by T-Mobile (still not official on what it is yet though), is there enough bandwidth available for the iPhone and Android to share? Or will it be like a virus and eat us alive?
Here is my question. If or when the iPhone becomes available on T-Mobile, would you jump the Android ship and join the ranks of the iPhone users? If you would, is it because of the lack of cutting edge hardware available with Android?
I can with complete confidence say that I would never leave Android. Maybe I’m just crazy. Even with source not always being shared by the carriers, even with Motorola trying to lock down their devices and even with 45% of Android users on Android 1.6 (Donut), I won’t leave Android. I would be much happier on Android 1.5 (cupcake) on my G1 and open, than locked down and run by a dictator, but that’s just my 2 cents.

Anyway, remember that AT&T has to eat up a lot of the iPhone subsidy. If t-mobile can’t handle that, the iPhone will either be out of reach for most of its customers or t-mobile will have to pay the cost by skimping on service and network upgrades.
Well, the rumors point to a device like that in the near future. All T-Mo managers saw a glimpse, literally a single frame glimpse, of an upcoming HTC Android uber-phone. HSPA+ capable, all the bells and whistles. I would think we’ll see what it ends up being (couldn’t see a keyboard in the image), and soon.
Bu the way G2 was for different Service Provider and I’m suggesting for TMo. LOL
I contacted HTC from their website and suggested the G1 re-invention and not the G2 Hero but the actual G1 squared ( the symbol) and even provided links to threads posted by many that bluntly said the reason they haven’t upgraded is due to the fact that most phones now aren’t the G1 with a full 5 row qwerty physical keyboard. But I am only 1 person. People should contact HTC either through their website or by any means necessary to give their suggestion on re-inventing the G1 to compete and/or surpass Samsung Vibrant/Captivate-Galaxy S series.
is funny that the Votes are in favor of the iPhone, when Android offers phones for all people and open to customize. Since Android (specifically the Droid)hit the scene, almost Everyone I know who owned the iPhone 3g(s) either couldn’t wait until their contract was over to upgrade to the newest Android phone on another carrier or wished that there were a better variety of Android phones on At&t. Right now if you type Nexus one in on Craigs Look you will see everyone and their mother asking to trade their iphone for the Nexus one or Evo. Would love an iPhone. Converted to Mac two years ago. While I appreciate the technical prowess I gained through other platforms, its nice not having to work on my computer anymore. I can just sit back and have fun. That’s what I expect of the iPhone.
In regards to T-mobile, I just canceled for Verizon. T-mo needs to get their coverage together before I’d ever go back.
Been on Android for a year and really am loving it. However, I could still be pulled by the iPhone because of my positive platform experiences. And, I like the sleekness of it very much.
Fusion20b – do you not consider the Vibrant a powerful smartphone? Like you, I left TM on a N1 and got an Evo. The Sprint coverage map showed my house deep in their strongest 4G coverage and I was looking forward to having a 4G hotspot to replace my AT&T DSL. When I got home that night I couldn’t wait to crank up the 4G so I turned it on and watched it hunt for a 4G signal and I couldn’t even pick up a weak 4G. I ended up returning it on day 30 and bought a Vibrant on launch day. TM turned on HSPA+ in my area and my download speeds are consistently in the high 5′s where my Evo with an excellent 4G signal was getting low 3′s. I liked the Evo, but the screen, processor and graphics chip don’t even come close to the Vibrant and battery life is at least 50% better. The Vibrant is more pocketable as well. I still like Sprint and the Evo and might go back at some point for a different phone.
Tmobile user for years now and i have to agree Tmo started something good with Android (g1 user). They gave us the G1 then mytouch then nexus which was a horrible idea just to sell it on the internet. I dont know whos stupid idea it was to sell the N1 that way but epic failure. Then the myt3gs now the vibrant. Tmo really needs to step up its android game. Remembering an article i read here @androidspin. When people think of android they think of the Droid phone. Verizon has done an excellent job of advertising the droid. If you stop and think about why the iPhone has gotten the sales it has is because its been around for years. iPhone changed the way we do phones. People dont like change. Everyone knows ATT has the worst customer service out there but people dont like change. Im glad Sprint and Verizon have done their part in promoting android honestly i havent seen Tmobile do its part.Getting the iphone if this rumor is true would bring Tmo some much more business which would be a good business move. Question is would they be able to support all the bandwith. IF they cant they will fall into the same category as ATT. Downfall would be for all of its loyal customers who have been with Tmo for years. I really hope Tmobile pick up better phones next year. I am the owner and every day user of both an iPhone 4 and a Google Nexus One and can tell you that the competition between Apple and Android is nothing at all to do with hardware specification or OS brinksmanship. Pure and simple, it is all down to the “experience” that you get with Apple’s iPhone that remains to be matched anywhere else.
For sure, Android is close, but it is still not there – and with Android’s fragmentation across devices it is likely never to quite make the grade. For it is the very so-called “lock down” that Apple have with their iOS that ensures that all of Apple’s customers receive the same level and quality of “experience”. And a good one it is too.
Contrast Android’s near-anarchy where manufacturers pick and choose whether or not to keep pace with Android. In this case people are left wondering why their friend with handset “A” can do things that they cannot with their handset “G”, at least without rooting – something beyond the ken of the average mobile phone user. The experience is confused and, for very many, quite difficult particularly for example with Tethering (something that many people would like to be able to do if they but knew how to). In Android Tethering is available out of the box for version 2.2 (Froyo) users but has to be hacked in to place for any earlier version of the OS. There are several parallels.
There is much to be said for a high degree of lock down and uniformity if the user is after simple and effective functionality, with the emphasis on simple.
Don’t get me wrong. I love to hack around with Android as much as the next person who frequents these kind of websites. But, and this is the important bit, the very vast majority of mobile device users do not. And that, oh puzzled one, is why the T-Mobile survey is coming up with the results that you are baffled by.

The problem is obviously android abandonment. TMO launched android into our hands, and there are many loyal G1 users who love everything you can do to it. but all we had for a while was a Nexus as an upgrade, and it was difficult to get with no support. what did we get next, the Slide? Then you mix in that ATnT sucks, and you get an article like this. But have faith, i bought a Vibrant yesterday, rooted it (seriously the easiest root EVER), and am waiting for WesGarner to port cm6. My friend who sold it to me at tmobile assured me that in the fall sometime they will be getting a ridiculous phone running android with a fully keyboard. maybe project emerald, maybe not. the rumor is the “HTC Vanguard” and its many names will be the phone to get. The sad part is they are playing catch up in terms of super phones…but soon android will take over. have you all looked up the rumors of 3.0? Gingerbread will revolutionize cell phones even further….

I do not want to see Tmobile sold to any other company since Tmobile is wonderful phone service when traveling in the rest of the world! So if the iPhone were added, I would say that is fine if it will keep Tmobile as it is, but I would never buy an iPhone or any Apple product. Android is a great OS and will only get better. I still do not understand why people say the android OS is hard to use. No iPhone for me.

Unless AT&T keeps blocking the iphone going somewhere else, it’s going to happen. You guys might as well start accepting it. The iPhone is the new Razr, and Apple is way better at marketing than Motorola. All the iDiots are just people that think the iPhone is the most cutting edge device, when it just takes some very light reading to know it’s not; but of course that’s why they’re iDiots. Now-a-days Apple is playing catch up to all other manufactures as far as cutting edge tech is concerned, but ask any average iDiot and they’ve never even heard that video calls via cell phones has been around for years in other countries.
I just left t-mobile with my N1 for sprint with HTC Evo. One thing that drove me away is thier lack of powerful smartphones. If the Iphone is there next super smart phone in line then Im not upset at all. Yeah fast network with HSPA but if you have no signal what good does it do. they should worry about putting up more service than upgrading thier network.
Service = calls, network = speed.
If tmobile users want an iphone then they should get a at&t.

While were at it. Lets get the new larger HD screen and output HTC has out as well as FLASH. The dual core should make it finally work. Cyanogen is probably already cooking the ROM.
I think its the hardware issue. The Hd2 should’ve been running android first of all not windows 6.5! I have 6.5 on my old dash as we speak they need to get with the times. Give us a knockout phone! And now I’m hearing about the Mozart wp7 which looks like a waste. What about android? I’m using g1 until I jump the TMO ship.
Still rocking the g1 and would never get an iphone! And htc does need to re invent the g1 but. Not in the form of the sidekick.
That is what I have said all along. I would, in a heartbeat buy a G1-2 (current keyboard a must) with more (the most) memory, more storage, and yeah the 1g dual core processor that is out. I would be willing to pay N-1 pricing for it. T-mobile got me because of the G-1 ( have 2 of them now)and a hot new version as described of the G-1 would cement me in for the duration. I will not be a slave to a locked down OS phone. And I would not take an Ifart on a bet. I like my TMO coverage as it is and am not willing to endure the att bandwidth debacle. HTC has left TMO with no good hardware choices for a while now. It’ time to dance with the one that brung-ya. New Super G-1, call it the Wet-Dream!!!!Tell me who to email I’m game.
I would never trade my N1 for the iPhone. It is a mp3 player that makes phone calls. Winmo os is better then Apples os.
Meh, I do respect iPhones, but it just makes me mad how there’s this whole iPhone 4 craze when the phone is so buggy. I’m okay with iPhones–my whole family has 3g/3gs’s lol–I’m just not okay with how brainwashed the whole public is. To me, it really doesn’t matter. ATT plans are crap anyways; most everyone I know has an unlocked iPhone on TMo already.
Just a thought that came to mind: why does TMo not have any stellar Android devices? In the US, Verizon and Sprint are kind of splitting the load for CDMA devices, while ATT and TMo split it for GSM. But we all know ATT phones suck because of Jobs’s dictatorship, so it is kind of weird that TMo phones are still so lackluster. Hopefully these new Android powerhouses in Q4 change this poll mightily.
I hope this doesn’t destroy their pricing model. I can care less about what phones they introduce (well maybe a little bit) since I buy my devices full price factory unlocked (or in my case rooted by me shortly after). The new iPhone is a complete disaster. People must not care about reception issues and such. I use my trusty old MT3G (running CM6/Android2.2) to Tether my laptop to the net and would hate it if their data policies change because of the stupid iPhone – that would be a reason for me to leave T-Mobile and go to either Sprint or Verizon since AT&T sucks to begin with especially since the iPhone came out.

Android is a sporty gear-shifting beast that is under control of the operator. You can do anything you want with it.

T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon or even Boost Mobile would take IPhone customers away from AT&T because everyone hates them. I don’t know a single person who is happy with AT&T across the board with mobile, home or business. I am with TMobile now and I don’t want the I(diot)Phone sucking band width from my Vibrant. It does worry me that this will happen since TM operates on GSM too and how quickly TM rolled out HSPA+ like they were planning on something big happening.

Till the recent launch of the Samsung Vibrant I have been using the G1… Even the G1 did things the iPhone wished it could. Samsung Vibrant is the new King in my book and I can’t wait for some good ROM’s to be devoloped to unleash it true power…
That is never going to happen. I finally put down the G1 for the Vibrant and couldn’t be happier. My next phone will be Android and future phones following.

You follow the bigger is better philosophy but it just simple isn’t the case. The idots probably have better credit and bigger bank accounts. My bro in law is a android geek who keeps pulling out killer specs, while I show off and enjoy killer apps. Waste of hardware power andriod is. Not even a good game yet. Sucks.
There are more android system than Iphone OS system. People keep comparing Iphone to one Particular phone but it is not the case. They are android devices in different skins Nexus ones, Evo. Etc and also a little different hardware. What ever the case there is just way more Android than Iphone. The poll is unofficial it is not part of T-Mo. When you bring an Iphone to T-mo it is slow because the phone is slow. The android is faster just check out the processor and specs. If you are a fan and going by emotion you can say whatever you want but always check out the hardware and the engine not just what is on the outside. Iphone 4 is dead. Android device is outselling the ipnone no matter what and no one can deny that. If you combine all the android device in sales; Android is the number one selling phone1

Just want to say T-Mobile f-up, they’re “project emerald” flagship phones are the, sigh! G2 and MyTouch HD which is a girlie phone. The HTC Desire HD is not coming to T-mobile USA only the UK and Canada!!!!!!!!! So no Evo or Driod like phones, just want to say they F!! The F!!! Up!
