This image has no alt text

Telus out in Canada has just released their latest Android handset – their version of the LG Ally on Verizon. The device is called the LG Shine Plus and has the same specs we remember from the Ally: Android 2.1, a 3.2-inch WVGA touchscreen, 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS, a 5-megapixel camera, and a full QWERTY keyboard.

It’s available online now for $69.99 after a 3-year contract agreement or you can get it outright for $299.99. They’ll also be looking to launch the Samsung Galaxy Apollo next, though we only have “coming soon” as a window. The Galaxy Apollo is a mid-range handset running Android 2.1 and TouchWiz UI, has a 3.2-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS.

Samsung I5510 is seen at IFA

Ah…the Samsung I5510. How our hearts have yearned for you so.  The Samsung I5510 was spotted at IFA in Berlin, and sports Android 2.2, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, Samsung’s TouchWiz interface, and a 5-megapixel camera. We can expect it to be a mid-range device, almost like a Samsung Gem, except the I5510 will tout Froyo goodness. The device will likely be a less impressive, and therefore more affordable, version of the Samsung Galaxy S Pro. Other than those specs, the device is still a mystery.

Android Now at 80,000 Market Apps

This image has no alt text

In case you didn’t catch it late last night in T-Mobile’s press release for their G2, Andy Rubin had some words to say for the successor to the first phone to carry his beloved operating system, Android, and had a quick fact to throw out to us: we’re not sitting at 80,000 apps. It’s an increase of only 10,000 from the last time we caught word of any official number. In May, it was announced that the market was housing 50,000 apps. At this rate, it’s sounding like we’re approaching the roughly 10,000 apps per month AppBrain had predicted a while back (even if their numbers were unofficial and somehow inflated).

logo-market

While we all know total number of apps doesn’t mean much these days (quality over quantity has long been a preference of mine), it’s still neat to see that corner of Android growing alongside everything else.

Verizon Fascinate Review

Ah the final chapter of the Galaxy S lineup, the Verizon Fascinate. Verizon was a little late to the party with their version, but better late than never, right?

Anyway, the Fascinate is your typical Galaxy S phone, featuring that beautiful 4in 800×480px, Super AMOLED display, blazing 1GHz Hummingbird processor and roomy 16GB of internal storage. Another nice feature of the Fascinate that two out of the four Galaxy S phones don’t have (Captivate and Vibrant are missing this) is an LED flash for the 5MP camera.

That’s really the only thing different about the Fascinate when compared to the other Galaxy S phones (hardware wise) so let’s unbox the Fascinate and get this review started.

You may remember that last week we heard a rumored G2 price of $199.99 with appropriate contract and 2-year agreement.

And the Press Release:

Introducing the T-Mobile G2 with Google — the First Smartphone Delivering 4G Speeds on T-Mobile’s Super-Fast HSPA+ Network
T-Mobile, Google and HTC re-team to deliver the groundbreaking successor to the T-Mobile G1; Exclusive preorder for current T-Mobile customers begins later this month

BELLEVUE, Wash. — Sept. 9, 2010 — T-Mobile USA, Inc. today unveiled the T-Mobile® G2™ with Google™, delivering downloads at 4G speeds1, a blazing fast web browsing experience and tight integration with Google services. The G2 breaks new ground as the first smartphone specifically designed for T-Mobile’s new HSPA+ network2, which covers 100 million Americans in more than 55 major metropolitan areas across the country. The G2 is an ultra-powerful smartphone designed by HTC and is the highly anticipated successor to the
T-Mobile G1, the world’s first Android™-powered mobile phone, pairing a large 3.7-inch screen with a unique hinge design that opens to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard. Current T-Mobile customers will get exclusive access to preorder the G2 starting later this month.

“T-Mobile ignited the spark that set the Android world ablaze two years ago with the launch of the world’s first Android-powered mobile phone, the T-Mobile G1, which remains an important milestone for both T-Mobile and the Android operating system,” said Cole Brodman, chief technology and innovation officer, T-Mobile USA. “Now, with the launch of the T-Mobile G2, we are re-teaming with our partners at Google and HTC to provide T-Mobile customers with another first — the first Android smartphone designed to deliver 4G speeds on our new network.”

“One of the advantages of an open platform is the opportunity for developers to create rich mobile experiences and seamlessly get those experiences into the hands of consumers,” said Andy Rubin, vice president, engineering, Google. “From new services, such as Voice Actions, to mobile applications, developer-led Android innovation is flourishing. On Android Market alone, the number of applications available to consumers has grown from just 50 applications two years ago to more than 80,000 applications today.”

“Two years ago, HTC and T-Mobile worked together to deliver the world’s first Android phone, the T-Mobile G1. From that start, Android has grown to be the leading smartphone platform in the U.S., and one of the most popular globally,” said Peter Chou, chief executive officer, HTC Corporation. “With today’s announcement of the G2, HTC and T-Mobile are once again bringing a breakthrough Android product to market.”

The first smartphone specifically designed to deliver 4G speeds on T-Mobile’s new HSPA+ network, the G2 is optimized for performance to provide customers with blazing fast access to a world of information through websites, applications, videos, file downloads and more. Built on Android 2.2, the G2 offers seven customizable home screen panels, including a dedicated panel with one-click access to your favorite Google applications such as Android Market™, which currently offers more than 80,000 applications.

The T-Mobile G2 delivers a powerful mobile data experience that is tightly integrated with Google Voice™, as well as packed with Google applications such as Voice Actions™ from Google, Google Goggles™ and more. It is one of the first smartphones in the industry to offer the new Voice Actions feature of Google Search™, which allows you to control your phone with your voice for calling contacts and businesses, sending messages, browsing the Web, listening to music and completing common tasks. It is also the first smartphone to offer integrated access to Google Voice™, allowing customers to create a new account using their current mobile number right from the home screen. Google Voice then automatically transcribes voicemails to text so customers can read them like an e-mail or text message from their phone or online. Additional pre-loaded Google services include Google Search, Gmail™, Google Maps™ with Places and Navigation, YouTube™, Google Talk™ and Google Earth™, among others.

Adding fuel to the G2’s speed is its Snapdragon™ MSM7230 mobile processor which combines Qualcomm’s new HSPA+ capabilities and second generation applications processor. The Snapdragon MSM7230 offers an 800 MHz CPU and is optimized to deliver exceptional performance, long battery life and leading edge multimedia and web browsing — with download speeds faster than other solutions currently in the market.

The G2 delivers advanced smartphone features including an HD video camera for recording crystal-clear, high-definition (720p) videos that can be automatically uploaded to your Photobucket account and a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash and autofocus. The G2 also offers smartphone essentials such as easy access to personal and work e-mail, including support for Microsoft® Exchange e-mail, contacts and calendar; social networking; and instant messaging. In addition, the G2 features a pre-installed 8GB microSD memory card with support for up to 32 GB, as well as a music player.

Additional features of the G2 include the following:

  • Dedicated Quick Keys for one-touch access to your favorite Google shortcuts and applications
  • Adobe FlashPlayer enabled Web browsing experience
  • Pinch and zoom functionality for Web browsing and photo gallery
  • 4GB internal memory with pre-installed 8GB micro SD card, with support for up to 32 GB of external memory
  • Built-in 3.5mm headphone jack, stereo headset and Bluetooth support
  • Swype® text input for fast, accurate communication

The T-Mobile G2 with Google will be available in the U.S. exclusively from T-Mobile, and current T-Mobile customers will have the opportunity to preorder the G2 in limited quantities later this month. Additional availability details will be shared in the coming weeks. Visit http://g2.t-mobile.com to register for updates.

Grab the Droid 10 Tablet for Only $249.99!

This image has no alt text

Well if it isn’t that Android-based tablet we’ve been hearing about coming from Motor– wait a second, what the hell is this?! It seems someone has completely kanged (cookies if you get the reference) Verizon’s Droid brand by offering a 10-inch Android tablet named the – well – Droid 10. At first glance, Droid-Life almost made me soil my pants as I thought Motorola had officially announced the tablet that’s been rumored for some time now. What I was met with was disappointment and a need (or desire) to flog those responsible.

I’ll try not to do too much flogging, but I will twist some wrists. So what say ye on the specs? For RAM, we’re looking at a whopping 256MB, but that’s  not about to be outdone by this amazing CPU: a ZT-180 1GMHz processor. That’s right: a 1GigaMegaHertz processor! Oh, you thought they were done? Of course you didn’t! Let’s round this sweet package off with a 10.2-inch TFT LCD touchscreen with a resolution of 1024×600 (hey that’s actually quite decent. They could’ve just done what every other lazy tablet manufacturer does and given us WVGA.)

droid-tablet-600x269

You’ll get 2GB of internal NANDFlash storage, with the ability to expand capacity to 32GB. WiFi up to N is another plus, but where’s the Bluetooth? GPS?  Anyone out there?

To be fair, it’s not that bad of a device for the price, but when you think about a DROID phone and the high standards Verizon requires out of a phone donning the name (the poor Fascinate aside), you get a little angry seeing a similarly-named tablet that wouldn’t be able to hold a candle to even some mid-range handsets out there. If you don’t care about anything I just said and just want a 10-inch Android tablet, be my guest.

Lions, Tigers, and Bears, Oh My!

The Cincinnati Zoo, located in Cincinnati, Ohio, is the second oldest zoo in the United States. It’s located on over 65 acres and has 27 different exhibit areas, with more exhibits planned. I’ve never been to the Cincinnati Zoo, but that does sound like a lot of ground to cover. Luckily, zoo-goers now have an Android app at their disposal to help them them with their visit.

In addition to a grounds map, the zoo app also features GPS awareness, daily schedules, videos, podcasts, as well as exhibit and animal information.

AVAI Ventures, the developer of application, also have an app available for the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, Washington.  Seattleites and other visitors can enjoy all the same features when they visit Woodland Park.

If you want to download either of the apps, you can click HERE from your Android phone, or scan the appropriate QR code below.

Early Android 2.2 Build for Acer Liquid Leaked

While we haven’t heard much about the Acer Liquid as of late, it is still definitely being supported by the folks over at Acer.  That said, they are currently in the process of testing Android 2.2 for the Acer Liquid.  It was during this very testing (no we don’t know what phase), that Android 2.2 was leaked to MoDaCo member LIQUID_USER.

From what is being said, the build is very stable, and the Liquid gets a major boost in performance.  The JIT compiler is working hard in this build.  Another user on the same forums was even able to get a targeted release date of mid-October for the final version. So, we definitely have that to look forward to.  I have to say it is nice to see Acer supporting this phone.

Click on the source link for more, along with instructions on how to flash!

HP TouchSmart eStation Zeus/Zeen Bundle

HP has been keeping their Android tablet project pretty quiet, as the only information we knew of this device came from anonymous tipsters and the usual limited image from the FCC. Engadget has gotten their hands on a few images of this device hanging out in China. According to Engadget, this looks to be one of the final prototypes, and as you can see in the images provided, HP has thrown their TouchSmart UI atop the Android OS. We’re still unsure if HP will upgrade the tablet to Android 2.2 before launch or if the device will ship with Android 2.1, but it looks like HP is taking their time to introduce a nice product.

It looks like HP has removed Gmail and the Android Market access, but has provided an email client as well as integrated Yahoo! services like Mail and Messenger, and has also kept the Facebook for Android application.  With applications like 60 minutes, MSNBC and Dreamworks HP, it looks like they are trying to provide more than their competitor.

Don’t expect to purchase the catch this Android tablet riding solo; we’re learning now that the SKU for an individual tablet has been canceled. The only way to grab this Android tablet is with the HP TouchSmart eStation Zeus printer which is rumored to be bundled at $399. The image of the printer (below) was uncovered by one of Engadget’s readers that sent in HP’s product page.

With the Samsung Galaxy Tab coming with everything you could want for in a high-Android tablet, one of its selling points is the wireless printing feature that is accessible just like any picture share option on your current Android device and as long as you have a wireless printer handy, you can instantly print photos, webpages etc… from the Android 2.2 tablet. It looks like HP is trying to offer a similar feature with their HP Zeus/Zeen bundle. Consumers do not like limitations so we think it will be hard for this HP bundle to compete.

With the reputation Samsung has with their Galaxy S devices, do you think the HP eStation Zeus/Zeen bundle will appeal to consumers?

Galaxy S heads to major 3 carriers in China

It looks like Samsung is looking to pull off another simultaneous offering treat of the Galaxy S series smartphone to 3 of China’s mobile networks, similar to the magical feat they did in the U.S.  China Telecom, China Mobile, and China Unicom will be receiving their own version of the handset, all capable of the 3G standard on their respective carrier.

Check out the picture details on which model is going to which carrier after the jump:

Samsung i5510 Is Their Mid-Ranged, QWERTY-Laden Froyo Handset

Looks like Vodafone’s going to get one of Samsung’s lesser-desired, yet still decent-looking handsets in the Samsung i5510. The phone will run Android 2.2 and – while Samsung Hub reports this will be running stock Android – the shot of the phone below points to TouchWiz (but not 3.0, from what I can tell).

i5510-ifa

The biggest takeaway here is the slide-out physical QWERTY keyboard which takes a lot of its cues from the one found on the Epic 4G or some of Samsung’s other QWERTY-enabled Androids. Other specs include a 5-megapixel camera, bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi, a microSD card slot, and UMTS connectivity. No other details can be had just yet, hardware wise, but it’s said it’ll be offered for around 200 euros whenever it does debut.

Android 2.1 finally released for Rogers HTC Magic

We were expecting an udpate to the Rogers HTC Magic mid-year 2010 when they announced it back in January.  Just when we thought all hope was lost, this almost forgotten phone finally gets it feet into Android 2.1 shoes!  The news comes to us from Mary Pretotto via twitter, an employee of Rogers focused on their customer needs.  So if you are on Rogers and want to keep in the know, be sure to follow her updates.

It’s also noted that some users are having issues with their updates – one being that of having enough storage.  Apparently the minimum free space needed for the update is 25 MB, so try to make some room if you have a full library of apps.  As always, be sure to backup your phone before doing any major updates.  Especially since HTC is stating on their site that this update will delete anything in your internal memory that is not part of the OS.

Verizon to drop Google Search for future Android devices

Verizon has just launched the Samsung Fascinate online today and the device will be available in stores tomorrow. As some of you might have noticed, any image of the device’s homescreen that shows the search bar is showing Microsoft’s Bing search widget.

TheDroidGuy contacted a Verizon spokesperson and asked about the Google Search feature and the spokesperson replied:

“We also have a great relationship with Microsoft and Bing is the default search engine on our feature phones. Customers may change the search engine on their phones if they like.”

Through some investigating by TheDroidGuy, we are learning that users cannot side load the Google Search app, nor can you locate the application in the market. After speaking with his Verizon contacts, we are learning that Verizon is planning on removing Google Search as the native search application on future Android devices and replacing it with Microsoft’s Bing.
