This image has no alt text

After a German court denied Samsung’s request for a preliminary hearing and honored Apple’s request for an injunction, banning sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in many parts of Europe, a date has been set for the legal dispute to be settled. On August 25th Samsung will have its day in court and argue their case in hopes of having the ban lifted. A final decision on whether or not sales of the tablet will resume won’t come until a few weeks after the hearing. And so the battle rages on…

Galaxy Tab 10.1 Keyboard Dock Gets A Quick Look Over

We’ve recently seen Samsung Galaxy’s 10.1 Tab get some keyboard and dock love after the Asus Transformer has been stealing all the thunder for a while.  Check out the video of the dock below.  The video doesn’t reveal a whole lot of functionality but you can get a good size comparison and feel just from looking at it.  The gentlemen in the video does a lot of walking around and comparing the tab to a few things but you can get a decent take on the keyboard itself from the last couple of minutes or so.  Unlike the Transformer, there is no touch pad and thanks to the video you can see the keyboard has a 3.5 mm headphone jack on it.  Do you think this is nice enough of a keyboard dock for you to spend some big bucks on the 10.1-inch Tab?  Is it a must have accessory to replace your laptop?  Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Samsung Galaxy S2, Galaxy Tab 10.1 Announced At MWC [VIDEOS]

This image has no alt text

At a pre-MWC event in Barcelona, Samsung made their Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Tab 10.1 Official, bringing the next evolution of their Android devices that rose to stardom in 2010. Samsung claimed they’ve sold 10 million Galaxy devices last year and the latest additions, while nothing groundbreaking, definitely bring some welcome updates that consumers will dig.

To make a long story short, we’ll give you the main skinny on each device and then dive into some explanation about the event itself, with nitty gritty details:

  • Galaxy S2 – 4.3-inch Super Amoled Plus screen, 1GHz Dual Core processor, 8MP rear camera, 2MP front camera, 1080p recording and playback, 1650 mAh battery, NFC equipped, Samsung Touchwiz 4.0 with 4 “hubs” (Readers Hub, Game Hub, Music Hub, Social Hub), 8.49mm thin, 116g, Flash 10.1.
  • Galaxy Tab 10.1- Android 3.0 Honeycomb running on a 10-inch screen, 8MP camera, 2MP front camera, 1080p recording and playback, 10.9mm thick, 522grams, dual core processor, Surround sound with speakers on left/right of device in landscape mode.

And now a little background. First we got to the event and waited in a line outside:

Once inside, there was a brilliant scene set with lots of colors, food, drinks, and people all waiting to get into the event. We grabbed a quick pic with the guys from Angry Birds while we waited:

By the time they let us in the crowd was immense. Shortly after I took this photo, all the seats were filled and a few hundred people resorted to standing room only in the back.

Kim Titus, VP of Public Relations at Samsung, introduced the event, down dropped the curtains, and we found out the background music was actually being performed by a live “mobile” orchestra composed of violinists and artists equipped with musically inclined Galaxy devices:

Samsung CEO, JK Shin, then announced the Galaxy S2 once and for all, discussing the company’s continued commitment to Screen, Speed, and Content:

Then things got a little… slow. Samsung proceeded to invite a plethora of partners on stage to discuss how they are working with Samsung, and it caused the event to be filled with about 40 minutes of boring nothingness. New rule: partners only get a shoutout, a handwave, and a couple sentences. The “partners” made what was an otherwise an awesome event unbareable at times. Samsung also packed in a bit too much cheesiness through well-intended real life “examples” of different types of people using their Galaxy S for the better.

Then they pretended to end the event, dropped the curtain, but in role call style they presented the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in grand fashion:

Then, again, a partner got on stage and ruined the flow of the announcement. Belkin talked for about 10 minutes about pretty much nothing, saying they were going to launch Galaxy specific accessories, only they took 200 times longer to explain this fact and filled it with partnership fluff.

First Impressions?

Again, nothing groundbreaking. The Galaxy S2 is definitely an upgrade, seeing dual cores, Gingerbread, bigger/better screen, better cameras and improvements across the board. There are no “wow” factor additions, but the Galaxy S was already solid and this phone should yet again be a favorite when it’s released globally. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 isn’t much different than the XOOM – it’s an Android 3.0 tablet. That being said, it’s awesome.

We’ve got some hands-on videos of the devices coming up soon, but until then, below you’ll find a bunch of official pictures of the Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Tab 10.1 followed by the press releases for each:

No Galaxy Tab 10.1 for U.S.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1″ is coming to a country far from you – if you are stateside, that is.  Engadget reports this:

Samsung says the 10.1 will be launching in March in both Asia and Europe — Vodafone will be the first carrier to nab the Tab — but it had absolutely no timing details for the US market. Price? We’ve got no idea, though we’re told it will be “competitive.”

The Galaxy Tab 10.1″ is running Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) and is a “Google Experience” device.  This means that there will be “almost” nothing getting in the way of this being updated due to the fact that there is no Touchwiz interface to slow down progress.  Interesting exclusions are a microSD slot, USB and HDMI ports.  The Galaxy Tab 10.1″ weighs in at 1.32 lbs (the 10″ Xoom weighs 1.6lbs) so it is relatively light for it’s size.

As more details come to us, as well as some non-stock photographs we will follow up with more regarding the “Galaxy Tab II” or as it is now known the Galaxy Tab 10.1″

Engadget also posted this video of their hands on.  Thanks Engadget

Adobe Updates Flash 10.1 and AIR, Readying for Gingerbread

This image has no alt text

adobe

Just as promised, Adobe has issued an update to Flash Player for Android, bringing its version number to 10.1.105.6 and fixing a recently uncovered security exploit. But there is more! Adobe has also brought AIR up to version 2.5.1, and just as was figured, both new releases serve to prep Android devices for Gingerbread, bringing rumors of an imminent release of Android 2.3 to a head. Here is what the Adobe AIR blog had to say:

“With the anticipation of the Android Gingerbread OS update, we will be delivering an update release for AIR for Android (2.5.1) that will be available on Android Market on Tuesday November 9th. This new release will address compatibility issues and be optimized to run on the Gingerbread OS update…
…In cases where a user receives the Gingerbread OS update before updating to the AIR 2.5.1 runtime, they will receive a native dialog on load stating that the application has quit unexpectedly and your application will fail to load. We’d like your assistance in preventing end users from this type of experience on their device.”

I can smell the tasty gingerbread popping out of the oven now, can you?

FRG22D Froyo Update Set to Deploy for the Motorola Droid, Will Bring Flash 10.1 [Update: Starts Tomorrow]

This image has no alt text

frg22d

The answer to the mysterious FRG22D Froyo update question has finally been answered, and just as suspected the firmware in question will bring Flash 10.1 as a download from the market while providing various security patches and bug fixes. Documentation has gone live on Verizon’s support page, but no date is given for the rollout to being. Given the nature of the documentation we are inclined to say soon rather than later.

[UPDATE]: Droid-Life has gotten their hands on an internal Verizon document confirming that update from FRG01B to FRG22D will be kicking off tomorrow, August 24th. It will most likely take a few weeks to get out to every Droid, but I get the feeling a manual installation will be coming our way very soon.

Verizon Confirms Second Android 2.2 Update Coming for Motorola Droid, Will Bring Flash 10.1

This image has no alt text

Almost since the FRG01B firmware began rolling out to bring the Motorola Droid to Android 2.2 we have been hearing murmurs of a second firmware, this one called FRG22. The question of whether FRG22 was a bug-fixed version of the Froyo update was answered when the halted FRG01B update resumed as normal, with no sight of the newer firmware. Now we have an e-mail being sent out to Verizon Wireless business subscribers confirming a second update that will follow the first Android 2.2 firmware. This second update will make it possible to download the official release of Adobe Flash for mobile.

adobeflashfrg22

Is this second update the mysterious FRG22? Well, we can’t say for sure with the information we have been given, but it seems this might be likely. We heard that the first round of updating should wrap up by the 18th of August, and that seems like a plausible date for the second round of firmware to start hitting handsets considering Adobe is nipping at the heels of the official release of Flash 10.1.

[Thanks to Christian for sending this in!]

Adobe confirms Flash 10.1 is headed to several more Android phones

So far, only a select group of Android phones, such as the HTC Evo, Nexus One and now the Motorola Droid, have been able to utilize Flash 10.1 to its fullest thanks to Android 2.2.  Well, Adobe has spilled the beans that several more devices, including the HTC Incredible, Samsung Galaxy S, Motorola Milestone and the Motorola Droid X, will be receiving Flash 10.1 via Froyo “in the coming weeks”.  Android 2.2 was announced in May, but only recently has Adobe released the full version of Flash 10.1 for Android – due to the fact that most phones just now starting to receive Froyo.  Many people have been unofficially enjoying full Flash for a while thanks to custom Froyo ROMs, but it seems that a few more will get to officially enjoy it soon, whatever “soon” means, exactly.

Flash 10.1 on iPad

The same individual who created that Web-based jailbreaking site Jailbreakme earlier this month, has unleashed “Frash” for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. It allows Apple devices to run Flash.

Jailbreakme reportedly is so easy, phones have been jailbroken right in the store (see above). It runs directly in the Safari browser on the iOS device. It is currently the first and only browser-based jailbreak tool to be released to the public.

Gadgets DNA provides step-by-step instructions; you’ll add a custom repository into Cydia, install Frash, and then restart your iPhone, says MacWorld.

Frash lets you run Flash 10.1 programs natively in the MobileSafari browser allowing you to play games and other animations on Apple iPad.

ZDNet can wait… “Maybe in six months or so the project will have matured to the point where it’s easier and offers greater stability, but right now it seems like more trouble than it’s worth”.

Flash 10.1 Running on the Droid Incredible

This image has no alt text

In case you missed it, an official build of Android 2.2 with HTC Sense was leaked for the Droid Incredible yesterday, and lest you forget that means you can now experience Flash 10.1 on the peppy Android handset. As more and more phones prep for their Froyo updates, Adobe is gearing up to launch Flash for Mobile out of beta. That event will be happening in the middle of August, so it makes sense that so many phones would be getting the Android 2.2 treatment in time for Flash’s debut. Check out the video below from Droid-Life to see what to expect on the Incredible.

Opera Mobile 10.1 beta for S60 now available

Opera Mobile 10 was released for Maemo back in May and now we see a version of Opera Mobile 10.1 for S60 3rd and 5th Edition devices. While Opera Mini is a great browser alternative for S60 devices, Opera Mobile takes browsing to the next level and is most likely going to be even better than the default S60 browser that is getting a bit long in the tooth. This latest Opera Mobile 10.1 beta browser brings faster speeds and geolocation capabilities to your device. I plan to download and install it on the Nokia E73 Mode soon and will post an article here on how it performs.

According to Opera, this latest beta is powered by the Presto rendering engine, Vega graphics library and Carakan Javascript engine that brings the same engine power to mobile as on desktop. All the great Opera features you expect are there, likc Speed Dial, Opera Link, password manager, tabbed browsing, and Opera Turbo for assisted proxy speed bumps.

You can download the free beta by going to m.opera.com/next in your S60 browser.

Flash 10.1 Beta 3 for Android in the wild

With Andorid OS 2.2 out in the wild, I am sure some proud owners of the new OS have gone out and downloaded the Flash 10.1 Beta to try out the ‘full web experience’ that Google, and Adobe love talking about. The Beta itself is fairly easy to get a hold of, you just need to download and install it from the market! The Beta has come a long way since it’s introduction at Google I/O, but it still has a ways to go. The interface seems to be a bit sluggish on both 3G and WiFi alike, and there is that nasty issue of keyboard interfacing that has to be addressed.

This is a huge undertaking. When you talk about delays and whatnot regarding the arrival of Flash on the mobile market, there are a lot of things you have to keep in mind. Adobe and Google are teaming up to bring us a FULL Flash experience on our phones, if they were just aiming to bring us movies or a few better rendered web pages, that would be different. No, they are bring us movies, games, interfaces, everything. The whole shebang. That means that they have to come up with an acceptable way to replicate keyboard commands that run some games and apps out there from just a touchscreen and some non-standard buttons. The solution has to be sleek, the solution has to be responsive, and the solution has to be idiot proof.

Think about that for a second. Just try and think of a solution that fits all the criteria listed above, because you know that will be the criteria it will be held to when they announce it to be finished. You could try a software keyboard, but in portrait mode the keyboard would be awfully squished. So much so that it would be nigh impossible to try and hit a combination of the WASD keys together. In Landscape mode there wouldn’t be hardly any room left for the app after the keyboard was brought up, especially on some smaller device screens, so no to a virtual keyboard in its current form.

Maybe you could have a voice-to-text converter. Sure that might work for some longer strung inputs, but could you imagine shouting “SPACE, SPACE, W, W, W, D, D, A, S!” at your phone, trying to control a game? Yeah, neither could I.

Flash will be a huge booster to the Android load out, and although it might not be seen in everyday use, it will be awfully nice to have. With the Flash Mobile Showcase up and running, you can see which sites have been optimized to run on the new system. I think it is coming along nicely, and I cant wait to see what Adobe or even what some modding crews do to fix the input issues. For now, the video below shows you how far Google and Adobe have come:

Where would you like them to go from here? Let us know in the comments!

Thanks Tipsters!

Adobe Flash 10.1 beta released to Android Market

On the heels of the big Droid X and Froyo release announcements, Adobe quietly released their Flash 10.1 beta app to Android Market.

Adobe Flash Player 10.1 beta 3 for Android (2.2) FroYo now available
The Adobe Flash Player 10.1 beta 3 for Android 2.2 is now available for download on Android Market for the Google Nexus One and other devices that support Android 2.2. Flash Player 10.1 beta 3 for Android enables your device to access the full web – which includes all your favorite videos, games, interactive media and web applications.

Unfortunately, you can only see this app in the market if you’re running Android 2.2, currently only available on select Nexus One phones. If you have a HTC device and don’t want to wait for whenever 2.2 may come your way, there is a some good news from Cyanogen and friends. They’re already hard at work on CyanogenMod 6 with the goal of bringing the ROM to the masses; namely the G1, Magic, Desire, Droid, Evo, Hero, Nexus One, and myTouch Slide. I wouldn’t expect flash on the G1, but it’s a real possibility for the newer phones.
