Enter the Ovi Daily App 2010 Must Have Apps contest to win a Nokia N8

I LOVE applications and now that the Ovi Store is good on the Nokia N8 I am downloading and purchasing more and more on my device. To celebrate the end of the year and figure out what your favorite Symbian apps are Nokia is holding a fantastic online event called the Ovi Daily App Must Have App of the Year Awards. You can vote for apps in the event from now until 31 December 2010 and by casting your vote you are entering a contest to win a Nokia N8. They will pick from all of those who correctly pick all six winning apps and that device will have those six apps. Check out the contest video below.

Apps are nominated in the following categories: Games, Social Networking, Music, Entertainment, Utilities, and Business & Productivity. Five apps are nominated in each category. I voted for my favorite apps and hope to win a Nokia N8 too.

The winning apps will be announced on 5 January 2011. Keep in mind that the apps for this year’s contest are compatible with Symbian S60 5th Edition devices because that was the main high end operating system this year so you won’t see some Symbian^3 compatible apps. This explains why I did not see Angry Birds in the game category or that would have been the easy winning selection.

Go vote now and good luck everyone. Voting only takes a couple of seconds as you choose your favorite apps in the survey and give them your email address so they can contact you if you win.

Zuckerberg is TIME’s 2010 Person of the Year

For connecting more than half a billion people and mapping the social relations among them; for creating a new system of exchanging information; and for changing how we all live our lives, Mark Elliot Zuckerberg is TIME’s 2010 Person of the Year.

What just happened? In less than seven years, Zuckerberg wired together a twelfth of humanity into a single network, thereby creating a social entity almost twice as large as the U.S.

If Facebook were a country it would be the third largest, behind only China and India.

It started out as a lark, a diversion, but it has turned into something real, something that has changed the way human beings relate to one another on a species-wide scale.

We are now running our social lives through a for-profit network that, on paper at least, has made Zuckerberg a billionaire six times over.

Facebook has merged with the social fabric of American life, and not just American but human life: nearly half of all Americans have a Facebook account, but 70% of Facebook users live outside the U.S. It’s a permanent fact of our global social reality. We have entered the Facebook age, and Mark Zuckerberg is the man who brought us here.

Samsung sells a million Galaxy Tabs, up 50% from 2010 estimates

Less than two months after launch date and after less than a month after its release on T-Mobile, Samsung has officially sold 1 million Samsung Galaxy Tabs. In comparison, Apple sold 2 million iPads in its first two months, though that was not during a holiday shopping season (nor was there competition).

Two weeks ago, Samsung had sold 600,000 Galaxy Tab units and projected that they would reach 1 million units sold by the end of the year. Now that 1 million units sold has been reached, Samsung has upped that end of the year sales projection to 1.5 million. Samsung has also sold 3 million Samsung Galaxy S phones in the US alone. Clearly, Samsung and Android is a strong bond.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab has found a market with its smaller form factor, dual cameras, Google’s Android 2.2 OS, and its compatibility with Adobe Flash. It is now available through some 120 mobile carriers in 64 countries.

Samsung Mobile named #1 Android Provider in the US in Q3 2010

Samsung, a company we all know and love here in the Android world, has received some great numbers. According to an independent study done by Gartner, Samsung has snagged the spot as #1 Android provider in the US for Q3 of this year (2010). The results are based on “sell through to end users”, and the numbers really don’t surprise us here at TalkAndroid.

According to the press release, Samsung roped in 32.1% of the US Android smartphone market in Q3 2010, which is an increase from 9.2% in Q4 of 2009. The presser also states:

Samsung Mobile attributes much of the success to its Galaxy S portfolio of premium smartphones, which recently passed the three million shipment milestone in the U.S.  Galaxy S smartphones are currently available with AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless, along with U.S. Cellular and Cellular South.
“I want to personally thank everyone who selected a Galaxy S smartphone as their mobile handset of choice. Neither of these wonderful accomplishments would have been possible without the loyalty and support of our customers,” said  president of Samsung Mobile, Dale Sohn. “The Galaxy S portfolio has played a significant role in Samsung’s success in 2010 and we are extremely excited to show you what products, services and innovations we have in store for the U.S. market in 2011.”

Be sure to hit the break for the full presser, and let us know what you think in the comments!

10 Geeky Things to Be Thankful For, 2010 Edition

All images used are copyright of their respective owners

Just the fact that you’re reading this means that, if we’re serious about it, you have things to be thankful for — to whatever higher power you believe in or simply to the universe in general. But you probably didn’t come here wanting to be serious, so we’ll let you deal with such things on your own.

In considering what to include on this list, I was originally going to include “We haven’t heard anything more about the reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer without Joss Whedon, so maybe it’s dead.” Sigh. And of course, in last year’s list I included an item about how George Lucas had said there wouldn’t be another Star Wars trilogy and that the six existing movies weren’t going to be re-released in 3D. So you’ll understand why this year’s list doesn’t have anything related to Star Wars on it.

These are in no particular order, and we’d love to hear your ideas for geeky things to be thankful for on Thanksgiving Day 2010 in the comments.

1. Peter Jackson is directing The Hobbit, and the cast that’s been announced so far looks excellent. While we weren’t hugely unhappy with the prospect of Guillermo del Toro directing, the news that Jackson has taken over can only be a good thing.

2. The Verizon iPhone looks like it will actually happen within the next year, possibly the next few months. If I worked for AT&T Wireless, I would be cashing in my stock options just as soon as I could.

3. Matt Smith has silenced the skeptics and proved himself a surprisingly excellent Doctor Who. Those who bemoaned David Tennant’s decision to leave are, for the most part anyway, singing a different tune.

4. Caffeine.

5. It looks like Duke Nukem Forever, the most famous vaporware product ever, will actually be released on February 1 of next year. If it really does hit stores as scheduled, we advise caution when venturing outside on that date, due to the serious possibility of airborne swine.

6. After years of declining relevance to what was actually popular on the web, Digg finally dug its own grave with its major site restructuring.

7. Joss Whedon is directing the movie of The Avengers. We are fairly confident that Fox does not have the authority to cancel it, but if asked would probably hesitate to place a bet on it.

8. Portal 2 is set to come out in April, after garnering tons of accolades at this year’s E3 convention. We have yet to hear whether there will be cake.

9. TRON is finally getting a sequel, 28 years later. Now we just need to convince Fox that Buckaroo Banzai deserves one, too.

10. With AMC’s awesome adaptation of The Walking Dead comic book series, there’s finally a zombie story in the mainstream that relies on deeply-drawn characters, not just scaring viewers.

[The image at the top of this article is a modified version of Norman Rockwell's famous painting "Freedom From Want." Special thanks to GeekDad Nathan Barry, who assembled the image for last year's Thanksgiving despite being British and therefore not a celebrant of said holiday.]

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at GeekDad!

CogniCard

CogniCard -CogniCard is an online business card scanner that works via email on your BlackBerry and with your webcam on your PC. We ensure highest quality by combining OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology with human quality checks at an affordable price. CogniCard can capture data even when other business card scanners fail.

Please note: You need to register an account at CogniCard to use this application and you receive 5 free credits to test this application. We don’t use any information from your business cards and we don’t share it with anyone. Security is monitored by McAfee daily on our site. Why do we include the human check? Because text on business cards is extremely difficult to capture and if you look at the reviews of other business card scanning applications most people struggle with taking appropriate pictures and the program doesn’t capture anything. You don’t have to worry about that with CogniCard, the human quality check will ensure that your information is captured completely.

CogniCard works with three easy steps:

You can send a business card to CogniCard either through email to your personal CogniCard email address (you get an email address once you sign up) or you can use your webcam to upload a business card to the site.

CogniCard uses OCR (Optical Character Recognition) and a human-quality check to capture information from your business card.

Your address will then be sent to your device again and you can import the address into your address book.

Features:

  • Upload through multiple channels (BlackBerry, Webcam, File Upload)
  • Convenient management of your business cards and safe backup of all your data
  • Cost-efficient because you only pay what you need instead of spending several hundred dollars on a hardware device.

If you are looking for time efficient way to digitize your business cards then CogniCard might be the right product for you. The best is if you try CogniCard with the free trial and see how convenient it is to use this approach instead of manually capturing the information.

GeekMom Holiday Gift Guide 2010: #1 Books

Over at GeekMom, we can hardly believe the holidays are just around the corner. So in order to help, we thought we’d share our first gift guide: books! Books are one of our most treasured gifts, both to give and get, and there’s some stellar — and familiar — entries on the list for this year.

GeekMom Jenny Williams says:

Regardless of what holidays you celebrate, the end-of-year festivities are right around the corner. If you choose to purchase gifts online, you need to order then in advance to allow for shipping time, backorders, and comparison shopping. We at GeekMom are here to help you with ideas for anyone on your gift list, from babies to grownups. We’ll be running a series of half a dozen or so posts, sorted by category or age group, with suggested gifts this holiday season. Many of our writers have contributed to our series of gift guides, so the ideas run the gamut from popular bestsellers to more obscure, interesting gifts with which you may not be familiar. Chances are there will be something that appeals to you.

Read the whole list over at GeekMom — and feel free to add your own suggestions!

Canadian Video Game Industry Prepares To Converge On London For DIG 2010

If there’s any chance that you’ll be in the neighbourhood of London, Ontario next week and you’re interested in the business of video gaming, you’ll want to mark November 18 and 19 on your calendar. The 2010 DIG (Digital Interactive Gaming) conference is being held downtown at the London Convention Centre. London has begun to punch above its weight in the industry, with a growing community of local game studios and developers along with a growing pool of talent thanks to programs at the University of Western Ontario and Fanshawe College, making the city a natural location to host such an event.

The annual conference brings game developers, industry representatives and students together (in fact, DIG offers a real bargain to students with a $20 Student conference pass), through conference sessions, a trade show, a Gaming Union Expo and Games Career Workshop. A wide range of speakers representing some of the major players in the industry including Microsoft, Silicon Knights and Electronic Arts will share the stage with local success stories like Big Blue Bubble and Digital Extremes. I’ll be there, getting my game on at the Gaming Union Expo, checking out the trade show and listening to what the speakers have to say about current trends in video gaming. Given everything that’s going on at the moment -the Apple effect on casual gaming, Nintendo’s forthcoming 3DS, Microsoft’s Kinect and the Sony Move- I expect it to be a very interesting event. Visit the DIG web site for further information.
