Leaked OS 6.0.0.461 for the BlackBerry Bold 9700

Bold 9700 OS 6

Hey BlackBerry Bold 9700 users, looks like we have something for you tonight! OS 6.0.0.461 has leaked for your device, so if you’re into that sort of thing go ahead and give it a go. As always, back up your device data first please. We’d hate to see you lose anything. Let us know what you see that is new and improved, and hop on over to the forums to discuss it further!

*OS Disclaimer – Please Read: Keep in mind this is NOT an official release and as such is not supported by RIM or your Carrier. If you choose to install, do so at your own risk and only if you’re comfortable in the process of upgrading and downgrading your device software. It is quite normal during operating system development for certain features to be crippled or disabled while others are tested, and these beta builds often reflect that. They are not always better. Depending on your BlackBerry comfort level, it may be best for you to wait for community feedback on a build before deciding to download and install for yourself or simply wait for the next official release. If you require support, you will find it in our CrackBerry forums via our extremely knowledgeable community base – do not contact your carrier or RIM for Beta OS technical support (their first course of action will be to advise you to downgrade to a supported OS). *

Rogers enabling UMA for BlackBerry Bold 9700 and Curve 3G

Rogers UMA

Some Rogers customers may have known this was coming considering previously leaked OS’ opened up the ability on the devices but now, we have the information coming to us in a semi official form. Rogers, will soon be pushing a software update out for the BlackBerry Bold 9700 and BlackBerry Curve 3G that will enable UMA access on both of those devices. With UMA now being enabled, both devices will work for WiFi calling provided you have the proper TalkSpot plan from Rogers. Pretty cool but, one has to wonder why the change of heart?

Video Hands-On of BlackBerry 6 Running on the BlackBerry Bold 9700, Pearl 3G and Curve 9300!!

We’ve seen BlackBerry 6 leak already for the Bold 9650 and Curve 9330 onto the interwebs. We’re still waiting to see it leak (or get officially announced) for the Bold 9700, Pearl 3G and Curve 9300. Hopefully it won’t be long now, as RIM was showing BB6 off on these devices at the Opening Reception at the BlackBerry Developer Conference 2010. Note – free booze was served at this event so it’s not quite as solid of a BlackBerry 6 first look as we did at the Torch launch, but if you own one of these devices and are waiting on BlackBerry 6 for it you’ll want to watch!

Celebrity Sighting: The Governator Arnold Schwarzenegger is a Bold 9700 user

Arnold Schwarzenegger BlackBerry Bold 9700

This celebrity sighting comes from John who spotted this pic of former action star (The Expendables doesn’t count right??) and current California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on his private jet. He’s rocking a Bold 9700 while hard at work doing whatever it is he does. Glad to see that at least he’s made one good choice (his choice of smartphone) in his career. Thanks John!

BlackBerry 6 for BlackBerry Bold 9700 video walkthrough

Since the announcement of the BlackBerry Torch 9800 with BlackBerry 6, we’ve all been waiting to see how older devices such as the BlackBerry Bold 9700 were going to fair with it running. As it turns out, it looks to be in great shape judging from the above video. With a noted boot time of about 1 minute and overall snappy response from the device, BlackBerry 6 on the BlackBerry Bold 9700 looks like it will be worth the wait. Also noted was the fact it appears to be a full implementation of BlackBerry 6 as well. Not a "watered down" release as previously rumored. WebKit browser, universal search and more are all found on the device. What do you all think now that we get a chance to see it running? Looking good or would ya rather a Torch still?

Web browser comparison – BlackBerry Bold 9700 vs. BlackBerry Torch 9800

Playing around with the Torch the last few days I’ve become a big fan of the WebKit browser (as I expected I would). Sites that I used to shy away from on my 9700 browser are now a breeze on the Torch and make the web experience that much better. Granted having the touchscreen again is a big bonus, but being able to double-tap zoom and flick around with more speed is a great thing — not to mention having tabbed browsing. This isn’t really a "competition" bewtween the two devices, but I ran a little comparison of a few sites to see how the Bold 9700 compared to the Torch 9800. While it’s not the greatest difference on some sites, others are much easier to work with now. I checked out CrackBerry.com, Google Reader, IMDB.com and ESPN.com. Kevin showed how the Torch stacked up to other device browsers, so here is a straight up BlackBerry to BlackBerry. I’m sure I’ll find some more in the coming weeks, but if you pick up a Torch tomorrow (or have on already) be sure to drop a comment with some of your favorite sites to visit using the new browser.

BlackBerry 6 to be available on the BlackBerry Torch, Pearl 3G, Bold 9650 and Bold 9700 – Where do you stack up?

BlackBerry 6

Tons of news an excitement from yesterdays Torch and BlackBerry 6 announcement. In the midst of all the chaos Inside BlackBerry posted a blog from Mike L himself who is obvisouly very hyped about the latest device and newest operating system. In the post, he finally let the BlackBerry world know just what devices will be seeing BlackBerry 6. Included in the list are the BlackBerry Torch, Pearl 3G, Bold 9650 and Bold 9700. Still no word of just when the OS will hit these older devices, but it shouldn’t be much longer now. So how do you stack up with BlackBerry 6? Will your device be getting BlackBerry 6 or are you left in the dust? Excitied? Pissed? Cast your vote in the poll and leave a comment letting us know.

Leaked: OS 5.0.0.862 for the BlackBerry Bold 9700

Leaked: OS 5.0.0.862 for the BlackBerry Bold 9700

Eh? It’s been a while since we seen a leak for the BlackBerry Bold 9700. Last one was OS 5.0.0.743 which, went official shortly after it leaked anyways. Many other leaks have happened in the mean time for the 9800 and 9330 but really, they serve no purpose to the majority of folks out there. Hybrid makes can use some of the files but even then, they don’t support the new APIs found in BlackBerry 6.  So, here..check out 5.0.0.862. Standard disclaimer as always folks. Leave some comments on what’s new if ya find anything.

*OS Disclaimer – Please Read: Keep in mind this is NOT an official release and as such is not supported by RIM or your Carrier. Poll: Can you replicate Apple’s reported “Bold 9700 antenna issues” on your device? I can’t…

 Apple Propaganda

* Update: Well, after a few thousand quick votes it seems some 86% of us BlackBerry Bold 9700 users think El Jobso’s evidence is a big pile of BS. As for the 14% who think it may hold water, well, I’m sure some of those must be legit… but the numbers speak for themselves. Sorry Steve – it seems you became part of the media you like to beat up on with this one… making a story where one doesn’t actually exist. *

If you’re on the internet today anywhere near a tech website, you’ve probably heard and/or seen posts surrounding Apple’s iPhone 4 press conference that focused on the hoopla surrounding the device’s apparent antenna issues (check out TiPb.com’s full coverage). According to Apple, well, there are none. Phones aren’t perfect. And furthermore, the BlackBerry Bold 9700 they tested out apparently had antenna issues of its own too.

Apple’s test? Go to an area where you have full bars while holding the phone gingerly, then change that loose grip to a bit more of a death grip. They show off a video where the Bold 9700′s signal basically drops to one bar, until the death grip is released (click the image above to jump over to Apple.com and watch the whole video).

Since seeing the press conference, I’ve been trying to duplicate their results and I simply cannot do it. My Bold 9700′s antenna kicks ass from what I can tell (disclaimer: I’m not on AT&T, but rather Rogers, so maybe Rogers kick a bit of ass too for signal coverage). I either get no drop in coverage, or after realllllly covering up the phone i see a temporary drop of a couple of bars, but only for a second or two, and then the bars come back up to basically full. RIM has been building radios for a lonnnng time. I’m guessing it senses the sudden drop in signal strength and automatically ramps up the power to increase it to full bars again. I’m no engineer though, so I hope somebody smarter than me comes forward to shed more light on this (hopefully RIM does).

In the meantime, if you have a BlackBerry Bold 9700, put it to the test. Can you duplicate Apple’s results? Or are you seeing what I’m seeing… no issues at all. Cast your vote and sound off in the comments. I’m sure this isn’t the last we’ve heard of the new smartphone antenna debate.

Official OS: 5.0.0.602 For The BlackBerry Bold 9700 released by AT&T

Seems as though the BlackBerry Bold 9700 is getting OS love from lots of carriers these days. While not on par with that of folks on Rogers in Canada, AT&T has just released their latest approved OS. 5.0.0.602 is now officially available via their BlackBerry downloads page. Rumor: BlackBerry Onyx II (delta) – A BlackBerry Bold 9700 refresh just around the corner?

Rumor: BlackBerry Onyx Delta - A BlackBerry Bold 9700 refresh?

There have been plenty of news floating around over the past two days regarding the BlackBerry Onyx II (delta). Some of hits on points relating it to the BlackBerry 9700a we saw the UAProf doc on previously, though that document showed the resolution as 360×480 (not 480×360) which previously linked the 9700a to the slider before it took the more official bump to 9800. But we’re not exactly positive of the relation there so we won’t speak about it but, rather stick to what we do know.

Judging by the rumors that are going around and things that we’ve been hearing as well, what we should be expecting Onyx II to be essentially a BlackBerry Bold 9700 with 512mb of RAM, a 5MP camera and of course the ability to run the fancy new BlackBerry 6 with Webkit baked in. The bigger addition to the rumors that we’ve been hearing on our end is that the device will also run a new updated processor and that can run OpenGL. If that is indeed the case and turns out to be true, it could be the first GSM device with OpenGL support (we’re still not sure where the 9800 slider weighs in on the Open GL side of things… we’re hoping it will get it first/too). If you tuned in to The Cell Phone Junkie Podcast last week where Kevin was a guest, he actually referenced the Onyx II and Onyx III (Onyx II has no touchscreen, Onyx III — likely coming next year — would add it). Lots of rumors floating around in BlackBerry land, that’s for sure.

After hearing this news I began to really think about it and where exactly the Bold 9700 is going to fit in here. If it really is just a refresh of the BlackBerry Bold 9700 what does that mean for the current 9700 and its ability to run BlackBerry 6? Seems kind of strange to have a refresh of a fairly new device already in the works and it may not please a few people to know their device just got outdated so quickly, if all turns out to be more then a rumor.

OtterBox Impact Series Case for the BlackBerry Bold 9700

One of the best-selling cases in the OtterBox line is the Impact case. This skin gives you good protection on your device without adding too much bulk. Essentially a silicone skin, the design has a bit more texture and a better feel than other skins. It provides coverage around the back and sides of the device, leaving open the ports and camera/flash. It has a great feel overall and I really like the thought that went into the design. It fits on snug and feels almost like its part of the device, and it doesn’t get in the way of typing or accessing the device. Check out the video above for a quick review.

Official OS 5.0.0.680 For The BlackBerry Bold 9700 Released By Hutchinson

*UPDATE* - it’s back, live again must have just been a glitch. Link updated.

Gotta post this one a little different from the other official OS posts pattern. Reason being is that it was reported on Twitter that Hutchinson had indeed posted the OS 5.0.0.680 for the BlackBerry Bold 9700 but, visiting their web site now it shows the file is no longer available. Thanks to @mattyg, I was able to scoop up the file for you all. However, I’m gonna toss this out there just in case. Make sure you back up your data before loading. If the file was pulled from Hutchinson it was either not intended to be released yet or possibly they may have found some errors with it. Either way, proceed with caution.

White BlackBerry Bold 9700 Gets Unboxed and Fondled!

Video, Photos & 1st Impressions of the white Rogers BlackBerry Bold 9700!

WooHoo! My happy day is here! If you’re a regular reader of CrackBerry.com you’ll know I have a thing for white BlackBerrys. I’m not quite sure why… maybe it’s the exclusivity (you don’t see that many of them); maybe it’s that white goes with summer; or maybe it’s just the fact a BlackBerry in white seems so wrong but just looks sooo right. Whatever the reason, at least I do know i’m not the only one who thinks this. On a recent CrackBerry poll, 35% of respondents said if the BlackBerry they already owned or were going to buy next were available in both white or black at the time of purchase, they would get it in white.

You can watch the video above (be sure to watch in 720HD!) and check out the photo gallery below to get a good look at my white Rogers BlackBerry Bold 9700. I love it. It’s beautiful. But while I’m super excited and happy with my new WhiteBerry, I have to admit there were a couple things I’m not 100% pleased about and just think RIM (and Rogers in this case) could do better with little very effort to drive home a better out of the box experience.

Kevin Pietersen Rocking a BlackBerry Bold 9700 … and the Cricket World Cup

Kevin Pieterson Bold 9700

Being from the good ol’ USA I really don’t know much about cricket, but I know a BlackBerry when I see one. This image has to be one of the best in recent memory for CrackBerry Sightings. Seen here is England’s Kevin Pietersen after winning the final of the World Twenty20. In one hand he’s sporting the Cricket World Cup, and in the other a Bold 9700. Any way you look at it he’s in good shape. The image is from the latest issue of Metro UK. Thanks to everyone that sent this in!
