Check your Market now, because Facebook for Android just got an update! It is not necessarily a huge one but it does improve and bring a couple of features to the mobile app: Improved News Feed, Pages Support, and Video Upload.
The News Feed has been improved in a sense that it will load more types of posts and open the posts natively in the app. Pages is also supported…sort of. You may now click on a Page that appears in your News Feed and browse the Page within the app. That is cool and all, but there is no way to quickly search for a Page. You must find it in your News Feed. This is a bit of a downer, especially since iOS’ Facebook app has had this feature for ages. Finally, and likely the biggest feature added to the Facebook for Android app, is video upload! We can now (finally) upload videos taken from our devices directly to Facebook while staying in the app.
Go give the update a spin, and let us know what you think! It seems as if the app is not showing up in the Market for tablet owners. If you own a XOOM, a shiny new Galaxy Tab 10.1, or any other Android tablet, PLEASE let us know if you can update, or even see the app.

Today, Rovio Mobile Limited announced that they have released a new additions to Angry Birds, and no, it’s not the anticipated Angry Birds Seasons Valentine edition. It’s a completely different update, adding 30 new levels in a whole new western themed world called “Ham ‘Em High”. There are a few new bonus items and they’ve even added a graphics toggle for lower end devices, eliminating the needs for Angry Birds lite. The only other thing worth noting in this edition is in the permissions. Looks like Rovio wants access to your SMS capabilities. Now, what on earth can that be for? Take a peak for yourself and note the other additions. Only time will tell what Rovio has up their sleeves. Rovio is definitely keeping busy these days as they are also working on the release of their Angry Birds Rio edition. Hit the break for the permissions list and to check out some more screen shots. Google infuses a new feature allowing you to check-in to places without needing a separate app. Another venture in making out-of-the-box Android devices more independent without relying on facebook, foursquare, or the slew of other apps made for location status. Using Google Places via Google Map 5.1 users will be able to check-in at wherever they happen to be and share their experiences with pictures and comments. This will also be integrated with latitude allowing your friends to receive notifications if you check in to nearby locations. You can also setup automatic check-ins and check-outs from specified locations. Check-ins will only be viewable by people you choose to share them with. The regularity and the amount of check-ins will affect the users title at said place to “Regular” , “VIP”, or “Guru” on the Google Places page. It’s a free update and should now be available on the Android Market.

UPDATE: Commentor Vrusabh suggests to click on places to check in and nearby places offering facebook deals will show a yellow icon next to to their name. I guess nobody near me is offering any FB deals!
UPDATE 2: AHA! I found a deal! “Patterson Perk” has a deal offering 50% off any Specialty Latte if you check-in 3 times!

Check out Android Market and you’ll notice that Facebook has an update available for download. The main inclusion in version 1.5.1 seems to be the inclusion of “Deals” but I couldn’t seem to find them anywhere on the apps interface. Perhaps they’ve added support for deals but haven’t yet integrated them. Or maybe you need an available deal in your local area to actually receive a notification.
Immediate Android Market comments reflect mixed opinions on the update. Complaints of poor notifications, messed up Groups, and other shortcomings are abundant, but then again we’ve come to accept that negative experiences are more inclined to attract comments – plenty of others have said they like the update.
Also noted in the recent changes to this version are Facebook Chat and Push Notifications, but unless I’m mistaken, these have both been available for the past several version. Keeping them in the recent changes is probably just a reminder for others to get a move on and upgrade their app.
Download the update and let us know how you like it. And if you spot those “Deals” be sure you let us know in the comments!
[Thanks Leo!]

I have talked a number of times about Gravity here on Nokia Experts and can’t say enough about this fantastic application. The application is so good that it keeps me using Nokia devices more than other devices and honestly, without Gravity I likely would have stopped using many of my Nokia devices and moved on. I saw on Twitter that Jan Ole Suhr released a new version of Gravity with some cool new features that seem to be pushing Nokia to step up to the plate.
Gravity is not just a Twitter client, but has support for Facebook, Google Reader, and Foursquare all in a single application that is well worth the $10. I have purchased something like 4 or 5 licenses so far for my devices and am happy to support great developers.
You can download this new version here and for a fairly detailed walk-through of all the new features and updates I recommend you check out Nitish Kumar’s blog post.
Here are the main new features and improvements:
- Embedded web browser
- Split screen keyboard
- Enhanced Facebook module with conversation view
I was testing out the latest alpha version before and love that I can enter text and see the context of why I am entering text using the keyboard and hope Nokia provides this split screen capability with an update.
The embedded web browser is pretty slick and is good for checking a quick link in a Tweet rather than going out to the default browser.
The enhanced Facebook support is actually what interests me most with this latest update as I have been using Facebook more and more lately with more family and friends joining the social network.
What is your favorite newest feature or improvement?

Although we just recently mentioned one of our favorite Pod Casting apps, DoggCatcher, we thought it would be worth noting again in a separate post, as the developer has just given it an update. Now at version 1.1.1823, the update provides a cleaner, streamlined UI. In addition, he added a theme option which allows you to toggle between dark and light backgrounds. Furthermore, when playing a particular pod cast, you can now see the title directly above the player no matter where you navigate within the app, so you’ll always know which feed is currently playing. And while most are complaining about the small fonts, I think the minor UI refresh compliments the app very well. Read More…

Good news for those of you who run with stock ROMS, app developer Download Android.info has updated their Blink led notification app, adding a rainbow of color to your vanilla Android world.
Many phones, like the Nexus One, contain a full color led but rely on white for most notifications. Boring, right? Blink, if you aren’t familiar, lets you make use of your phone’s led full color capabilities to enable multi-color notifications.
Adding even more multi to your notifications, Blink now allows for custom color selections and color naming. The color wheel is a great touch, but the colors themselves are sometimes hit or miss. On my Nexus One, the primary colors of blue, red and yellow seemed to work the best, all of the purples look more like hot pink.
There are also some bugs to be worked out with Blink working properly on some devices; but if you’re looking to mix things up, it’s worth a try. Below you’ll find the full changelog as well as links to download the app if you want to try it on your phone.
Product Features:
- LED Color Test Function to Check Device LED Support Status
- New SMS & MMS LED Color & Frequency Adjustment
- Missed Call LED Color & Frequency Adjustment
- New Phone Call LED Color & Frequency Adjustment
- Low Battery & System Memory LED Color & Frequency Adjustment
New Features in Blink 1.9 (Jan. 14, 2011):
- Add LED color test function to check device LED support status (customized colors and LED test guide are available for the test).
- Removed duplicate low battery/memory notification messages and added options to send/cancel notification messages.
- User operation and procedure optimized.
- Other minor improvements.

PayPal has just brought to our attention a small update to their Android app that came just before Christmas that could make a huge difference to those in need. PayPal mobile for Android now supports donations to over 23,000 charities in the US, UK, and Canada. Included in that group are the likes of World Food Program USA, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and Habitat for Humanity.
The goal is to make donations streamlined and easy to help encourage folks to give a little to people who may need it more by helping some great organizations, and a huge presence of 5 million downloads should only help. Check it out in the Market if you haven’t already.

Today Meraki, a cloud-based wireless networking company known for its inexpensive and easy to manage WiFi gear, announced their Meraki MX series cloud-managed routers, integrating web-based centralized management to non-WiFi routers. Meraki also introduced Networking as a Service pricing, a new subscription service that eliminates upfront hardware costs.
The MX series routers includes two models: the MX50 (pdf), for small branches, and the more powerful MX70 (pdf) for medium and large branches. The MX series was designed from the ground up for distributed, Internet-connected organizations, managing two to 5,000 sites.
Both models feature cloud-based centralized management, for seamless multi-site networks, automatic security and network-wide monitoring. Meraki’s cloud management provides an intuitive browser-based user interface that eliminates specialized training and dedicated staff. New features include automatic detection and monitoring of printers, showing printer ink levels across remote branches.
Meraki’s Networking as a Service is a new pay-as-you-go pricing program. Under Networking as a Service, customers can obtain MX routers through an annual subscription, with no upfront hardware costs. Customers can grow, shrink, or upgrade their network at any time.
MX series routers start at $35/month. This all-inclusive price includes hardware, software licenses, ongoing upgrades, maintenance, and support, with no hidden fees.
According to Meraki, Networking as a Service eliminates upfront hardware costs, increases flexibility, and reduces risk. You buy service on a per-unit, per-year basis. The price depends on the hardware you’re buying, with 802.11n Wireless LANs starting at under $25/AP/month, and branches at $35/router/month.

We first told you about StartTalking back in October, where its primary focus was as a completely hands-free app for texting. You can use your voice to start and compose text messages and the app can read incoming messages to you. The latest version adds improved voice recognition in noisy environments, as well as more voice commands to control your Android phone.
StartTalking now has the ability to initiate voice dialing, voice navigation, and post to Twitter & Facebook. Another fun feature is the ability to name your phone, and change the greeting it responds with. So instead of saying “start talking” and hearing “yes” as your reply – you can change it so you say “Nexus One” and have your phone reply, “Yes Master Steve”. Pretty cool stuff.
StartTalking is free for Android devices running version 2.1 and higher. Grab it from their site here, or grab it from the market link on your phone or QR code below.

Posted on 17 December 2010. Tags: adds, Firefox, H.264, Microsoft, support, VIDEO
Thanks to licensing issues and exorbitant fees, Mozilla doesn’t support the H.264 video codec in Firefox, but Microsoft (yes, Microsoft) is aiming to change that.
Microsoft has created a Firefox plug-in that will tap into Windows 7’s native H.264 support, allowing Firefox 3.6 and the 4.0 betas to play H.264 encoded video.
If you’d like to give it a try, you can download a copy of the HTML5 Extension for Windows Media Player Firefox Plug-in from Microsoft’s Interoperability Labs.
The HTML5 video tag promises to eliminate the need for third-party plugins like Flash or QuickTime. Sadly, it’s a long way from “promises” to “delivers.” While HTML5 offers a video tag for authors to easily add videos to their webpages, it’s up to the browser to actually play that video. And that’s where the problem arises — what video codec should the browser use?
Apple is standing firm behind the H.264 video codec. But H.264 has licensing requirements, fees and is not free in any sense of the word. Mozilla Firefox supports Ogg Theora and WebM, both of which are open and free. Google’s Chrome supports all three codecs. Opera supports Ogg Theora and WebM. Microsoft has decided to support H.264 and WebM in IE9.
In short, varying codec support across browsers has made native HTML5 video a mess.
Microsoft’s new add-on brings support for H.264 to Firefox whether Mozilla wants it or not. The add-on parses HTML5 pages and replaces video tags with a call to the Windows Media Player plug-in. Unfortunately it’s not perfect. To deal with the different codec support in each browser, many sites use JavaScript to determine the browser’s codec support before presenting a video. If that’s the case, the new add-on won’t work because the detection code won’t see the H.264 support (the H.264 support is an add-on, not a native part of Firefox).
Ironically, native web video isn’t supported at all in Microsoft’s own browsers, regardless of the codec used (IE9 will introduce support for HTML5 video when it is released next year). Third-party developers have already created an experimental IE add-on to help current versions of IE get in on the native web video fun.
Microsoft’s add-on is far from ideal, but if you’ve been frustrated by Firefox’s lack of H.264 support, it does offer a partial solution. Hopefully, in the long run, browsers will standardize around WebM, which seems to enjoy the most widespread support (Apple’s Safari is current only browser that hasn’t pledged WebM support), but if that doesn’t happen solutions like this one may become even more common.

Posted on 16 December 2010. Tags: adds, Facebook, Facial, recognition
Facebooks says every day, people add more than 100 million tags to photos on Facebook. They do it because it’s an easy way to share photos and memories. Tags on photos are an essential tool for sharing important moments, but can be a chore.
To make this process easier, they added group tagging, so you could type one name and apply it to multiple photos of the same person. Now they’re announcing tag suggestions, which will make tagging multiple photos even more convenient.
When you or a friend upload new photos, they use face recognition software—similar to that found in many photo editing tools—to match your new photos to other photos you’re tagged in. They group similar photos together and, whenever possible, suggest the name of the friend in the photos.
If you don’t want to have yourself tagged in dozens of photos across Facebook, you can opt out of facial recognition. Under “Customize Settings,” uncheck “Suggest photos of me to friends.” Your name will no longer be suggested in photo tags, though friends can still tag you manually (and you can promptly untag).

Twitter now offers inline previews for more services, like the popular Instagram.
Twitter has expanded the integration of third-party services on its website, adding five new photo and video sharing services to the growing list of what shows up as an inline preview.
Among the new services to secure a spot in the ever-expanding Twitterverse is Instagram, the current darling of the Twitter hipsters. The photo-sharing service has managed to build an impressive following even though it’s currently only available as an iOS app. The majority of Instagram fans use Twitter to post links to their artsy photos.
The other new services available as inline previews include videos from Blip.tv, music players from Rdio, slideshows and presentations from SlideShare and photos and videos from Dipdive.
The new inline preview feature, introduced in September’s make-over, shows a preview of an image or a video in the right-hand pane whenever somebody tweets a link to a supported video or photo site. At launch, that was Flickr, Vimeo, TwitPic and YouTube. Along with the inline previews, you also see associated conversations, recent tweets and mini bios of the people mentioned in the tweet. It’s a feature we really like — it takes Twitter beyond the 140 character limit to include photos, videos, maps and all sorts of other rich media.
While we’re happy to see Twitter integrating with more web services, the new web-based preview features highlight just how far behind the website the company’s official mobile apps have fallen. Neither the official Android client nor the iOS Twitter clients support any of the inline previews you’ll find on the web. Twitter’s mobile site doesn’t show them, either. For a richer mobile Twitter, you’ll need to turn to third-party mobile apps.

Just less than an hour ago, we told you that Launcher Pro was set to get an update. Now, it looks like the update has come out, and adds some really cool new features. New sauce includes:
- Virtual looping: When this is enabled, users can scroll past their last homescreen, only to bounce back to the other side. To enable this feature, go into Preferences->HomeScreen Settings->Virtual Looping
- Dock popup: This feature is for Pro users only. It allows users to add Recent Apps as a Swipe gesture action popup. If you enable it, you can make a swipe gesture to display your most recently used apps, much like holding the Home button. To enable, hold down an icon in the dock->Swipe gesture action->Show Popup->Recent Apps. Thus far, I have found it displays more apps than long pressing the Home button
- Clear cache option for Twitter and Facebook widgets; this is also only for Pro users. To access this, go to Preferences->LP Widget Settings->Twitter widget/Facebook widget
While the app is not a complete redo of the original code, that is a feat the Federico Carnales, the developer and creator of Launcher Pro, hopes to accomplish early 2011. Be sure to check out the app in our app database, and let us know what you think in the comments!
