BIS outage across multiple North American Carriers

BIS Outage

*Update 2* – 11:35am EST Many reports of BIS being back up rolling in across all the carriers in question. Issue seems to be resolved. Give it a little time to hit all users across the many regions in question.

*Update* – 11:20am EST – It looks like users (including myself) are now able to send emails, but still not receive. Hopefully full email capabilities will be back up soon.

It’s been quite a while since we had an outage across multiple carriers and regions in North America, but it looks like BIS email is down for most carriers across the US and parts of Canada. No one is receiving email, but it appears that browser, BlackBerry Messenger, voice and SMS are still working however. It looks like the outage started in the wee hours of the morning today, but there is no word on when they’ll be up and running. Keep it here and we’ll report anything as it pops up. Jump into the forums for more discussion.

North American Desire HD Passes Through FCC

This image has no alt text

desire-hd-fcc-label
Eight days ago MobileSyrup treated us to an image of the Desire HD with a Telus Logo on the boot screen. Now Engadget has dug up the FCC filing HTC put in for this device. Adding these two bits together and we have some potentially great news for Telus users.

Expect this device to be loaded with Telus’ 3G frequencies, meaning users that can’t do without this device can use it on AT&T, Bell and Rogers.

HTC Desire HD gets FCC approval, could be destined for American 3G or Telus

The HTC Desire HD, a beast of an Android phone that has yet to make it to the North American continent, has been approved by the FCC. The FCC approval documented a device with model number PD98120 that supports WCDMA Bands II and V, which means it can be used on AT&T, Bell, Telus, and Rogers.

Since it has already been rumored that Telus would receive the HTC Desire HD, this recent FCC approval only supports that theory even more.

The American Museum of Natural History Tours The Brain

Image courtesy of The American Museum of Natural History

Next time you’re in New York City you should stop by the American Museum of Natural History and visit a good friend and favorite zombie snack: your brain. Millions of years of evolution have helped shape our gray matter into the thought processing plant it is today.

In a new exhibit called Brain:The Inside Story, the AMNH combines new findings about how our brains work with research on evolutionary history and the diversity of life to give visitors a deeper understanding of their brain.

The exhibit starts off small with a preserved brain on display then plunges you into the high speed communications network that is the nervous system. Spanish Artist Daniel Canogar has built a 35 foot walkway of cables and lights, made from 1,500 pounds of recycled material, to represent the brain’s electrical system.

This is just the beginning of the journey. With multimedia presentations, interactive exhibits and giant representations of the cells that make up the brain you will get a real sense of how your noggin gets so much done throughout your day.

Here’s a rundown of some of the exhibits:

Introductory Theater: To learn some basics about the brain and how it functions, visitors follow a Julliard dance student during an audition. A video projection shows how her activities simultaneously correlate with activity in her brain through the illumination of a large three-dimensional brain model in the theater.

Your Sensing Brain: Explore the senses through interactive exhibits and learn how your brain gets and process information. You’ll also learn how your brain can be fooled by sensory illusions.

Your Emotional Brain: This section explores how emotions are processed in the brain. You can explore how our emotion processing evolved over millions of years.

Your Thinking Brain: This section asks visitors to think about thinking, as intelligence is portrayed in all of its complexity as a sum of different types of intelligence, including spatial, general, mathematical, and emotional. With interactive exhibits to test and tease those special parts of the brain, you’ll have a lot to think about.

Your Changing Brain: Examine how the brain has evolved over millions of years to help us claw our way to the top of the food chain.

If you’re planning on visiting New York for the holidays you should block out some time to visit the American Museum of Natural History and get reacquainted with a good friend who’s always been there for you: Your Brain!

American Libraries Celebrate National Game Day on November 13

Boardgames @Tiffany

You’ve got to hand it to librarians: they have got their stuff together. Some of the most tech-saavy people I engage with on Twitter are librarians and they know that learning and literacy are so much more than books. GeekDad readers are well aware that libraries are places that not only foster learning, but have long harbored all kinds of geeky habits and interests. So, it will be no surprise that the American Library Association is building on previous success and will have over 1800 locations and tens of thousands of people playing board games and role-playing games this Saturday, November 13.

National Gaming Day at your library promises games of all types. Libraries will offer a variety of activities throughout the day, including modern board games, traditional games (such as chess and checkers) and two national video game tournaments that will pit players at dozens of libraries against each other for bragging rights to the ultimate Rock Band and Super Smash Bros. Brawl crowns.

The success of the national day has now crossed borders with libraries all over the world signing up to be a part of the event which is not just about playing games, but focusing on how games bring people together and libraries as a social and community hub. Some libraries in France, Portugal, Canada and Argentina will also be participating.

To find out whether your local library will be rolling dice this weekend, check out the registered locations.

Intel: $6-8 Billion in American Fabs

Intel announced today that the company will invest between $6 billion and $8 billion on future generations of manufacturing technology in its American facilities.

The action will fund deployment of Intel’s next-generation 22- nanometer (nm) manufacturing process across several existing U.S. factories, along with the construction of a new development fabrication plant in Oregon. The Oregon factory should be ready in 2013 and will primarily produce chips for research and development as Intel advances its designs.

Washington County’s new development fab will be called D1X and is scheduled for research and development startup in 2013. Upgrades are also planned for the D1C and D1D fabs on the Hillsboro campus. The projects will support 6,000 to 8,000 construction jobs and result in 800 to 1,000 new permanent high-tech jobs.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Intel will spend $6-8 billion in manufacturing to support future technology advancements in Arizona and Oregon.
  • The investment supports the creation of 6,000-8,000 construction jobs and 800-1,000 permanent high-tech jobs, and also allows Intel to maintain its current manufacturing employment base at these U.S. sites.
  • The investment will fund a new development fab in Oregon, as well as upgrades to four existing fabs to manufacture the next-generation 22-nanometer (nm) process technology.
  • Intel’s next-generation, 22nm microprocessors will enable sleeker device designs, higher performance and longer battery life at lower costs.

Intel’s announcement indicated a new development fab will be built in Oregon (above), along with upgrading four other U.S. fabs (Fab 12 and Fab 32 in Arizona and D1C and D1D in Oregon).

Oregon Live reports that Intel will remake its advanced Ronler Acres campus for the new Fab. The new Hillsboro plant — Intel’s first new plant since 2007 — is scheduled to start production in 2013, reports the NY Times.

Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski said, “This is probably the largest private investment during this last two or three years in this country.”

Intel has approximately 15,000 employees in Oregon, making it the largest private employer in the state (pdf). Intel’s operations in Oregon stretch across six campuses in Washington County west of Portland. It is the company’s largest and most comprehensive site in the world, a global center of semiconductor research and manufacturing and the anchor of Oregon’s economy.

Intel’s upcoming 32-nanometer “Sandy Bridge” Core architecture got much of the attention at the company’s developer show last month. Sandy Bridge chips, built using 32 nm architect, will be out early in 2011. Ivy Bridge is the codename given to the 22 nm die shrink of Sandy Bridge.

During his keynote address at the Intel Developer Forum, Sept. 13, CEO Paul Otellini said that the company’s Ivy Bridge” processor, a 22-nm chip, is on schedule and will be delivered in the second half of 2011. The chips are already in sample production, he said.

“Last year at IDF, I showed you the first working wafer with SRAM devices on it,” Otellini said during his talk. “This year, I’m happy to report that our first microprocessor designed for 22 nanometers is moving through our fabs as we speak here today.”

Intel is also building its first production facility in China, reports Bloomberg. Intel is vying with Samsung Electronics to be the industry’s biggest spender on production, budgeted $5.2 billion for plants and equipment in 2010. The company’s microprocessors run more than 80 percent of the world’s personal computers. Rival Samsung is the biggest maker of memory chips.

Moving to 22-nanometer could also help the company produce chips with lower power consumption to better compete in smartphones—where designs from ARM currently dominate. Intel launched the Atom platform two years ago. Now executives are looking to aggressively expand the reach of the Atom chips, into tablets, handheld devices and phones.

Nokia is really serious about helping North American developers

I may have been kidding around a bit in my earlier post when I said I might want to register for the CTIA Developer Day to try to get a Nokia N8, but as I look at the Calling All Innovators, North America events and training page I am seriously thinking about the opportunities of developing for Symbian. Nokia is having some major training events with Mobile Monday and Qt training events being held right here in the Seattle area. I haven’t programmed anything in years, but understand I need to bone up on C++ first so I may pick up a few books and get cracking since I do have some ideas for apps I would like to see on the N8 and future Symbian devices.

The possibility of winning thousands of dollars by developing good apps is also a valid reason for considering development for Symbian. If Nokia can get someone like me excited about the opportunities, I think they may generate some excitement for these events in the developer community as well.

HTC Desire HD Shows Up in FCC Filing Lacking American 3G

htc-desire-hd-fcc

The HTC Desire HD has made its way on to the FCC after it was unveiled in London earlier this week, and much to the collective disappointment of American Android fans, 3G radio bands matching those for North American carriers are no where to be found.  The filing matches up with the PDP98100 model number found on the Desire HD, so little doubt remains that a release States-side isn’t in HTC’s immediate future plans.

How does it feel now that the shoe is on the other foot? Yeah, America already has the EVO but that Desire HD sure is looking mighty sexy right about now…

Going Deep: Twin American Voyagers Leaving Our Solar System

Artist Concept of the Voyager Spacecraft (Image: NASA/JPL)

In the United States, on the 4th of July, we celebrate the declaration of our independence as a sovereign nation with great pride by proudly displaying our countries’ flag and celebrating with fireworks displays across the country. In 1977, just over 1 year after the United States celebrated the 1976 bicentennial of this declaration, a pair of rockets burst into the sky carrying the Voyager  1 and Voyager 2 space probes along with, as noted in a recent SPACE.com article, our nation’s flag. These missions are on trajectories that have taken them well beyond what we commonly think of as the edge of the Solar System and are racing towards the edge of the heliosphere and will enter true interstellar space. So how far away are these two spacecraft?

The Voyager probes were launched in August (Voyager 2) and September (Voyager 1) of 1977, a good year and a half before this GeekDad was born and around 14 years before this year’s crop of graduating High School seniors were born. Voyager 2 is now over 92 astronomical units, or AU, away from our Sun where 1 AU is the average distance from the Sun to the Earth. Voyager 1, on a different trajectory, is now 114 AU from Sol. These distances mean that, right now, commands sent to Voyager 2 take around twelve and a half hours at the speed of light to reach the spacecraft and the telemetry takes another twelve and a half hours to get back to Earth, for a round trip of just over 25 hours. The round trip for Voyager 1 is over 31 hours!

So given these amazing distances, how far away are these 2 spacecraft really?  To give you an idea, I am going to lay it out on an American Football field as a way for readers to take go to a local field and seeing how far away this is for themselves. For readers that may not be familiar with an American Football field, the playing field is 120 yards in total with 100 yards, 91.44 meters, being the distance from goal line to goal line.

Placing the Sun at one goal line and working our way out in the solar system (lining up the planets artificially as if they were all in alignment) we first encounter Mercury half of a yard away, Venus roughly another quarter yard away, and Earth will be around the 1 yard line.  Stopping here for a moment, at this scale, the Sun is less than half an inch across and the Earth, our tiny home in the Universe, is 1/250th of an inch across. Finishing out the inner Solar System, we encounter Mars at 1.75 yards from the Sun.

Moving out in the Solar System, we meet mighty Jupiter just shy of the 6 yard line. Next up is Saturn just a hair over the 10 yard line, Uranus at almost 22 yards, and Neptune around the 33 yard line.  Next is what many consider the edge of the Solar System, the dwarf planet Pluto.  Pluto is a bit of an odd-ball as at its closest approach to the Sun it is actually inside Neptune’s orbit but at the furthest point out it is well beyond Neptune at the 53 yard line on our Solar System Football Field.

So that is all well and good, but how far away are Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 at this scale?  Voyager 2 is a full 100 yards away from the Sun at the opposing goal line and Voyager 1 has left the end zone and is 123 yards away from the Sun! Maybe the few millionths of an inch trip to and from your summer vacation won’t seem as long now! For more information on the Voyager probes, be sure to check out JPL’s Voyager website.

If you are celebrating the Independence of the United States today, as you look upon the flags flying and the fireworks bursting in the sky, take a moment to look up and think of those two little flags traveling so deep into space.
