AndroidGuys Weekly RoundUp Jan 24-29

It’s time for the AndroidGuys Weekly RoundUp! We covered a good bit of news last week, so let’s jump right into it. First off, devices:

  • The HTC Evo Shift 4G finally got rooted, permanently
  • The Nexus S got an OTA to fix that pesky reboot issue
  • We learned that the HTC Thunderbolt is expected to drop on February 24th
  • The Droid X2 is rumored to have a Tegra 2 dual-core processor
  • We saw a Moto Atrix 4G promo video
  • We heard that Samsung will manufacture the Sidekick 4G, followed by some pictures
  • The Moto Xoom was compared to the iPad, like it’s really a competition
  • We got a peek at an unknown HTC device in the wild.. in Taipei
  • Leaked MWC plans confirmed the Galaxy S2 and Tab2
  • We got our eyes on a possible Droid Incredible successor
  • Engadget got some hands-on time with the Xperia Play
  • Samsung pulled the cover off 4 Galaxy devices for Europe and other countries
  • We got release dates for the G-Slate, Vibrant 4G, and Dell Streak 7
  • LG more or less confirmed that they’ll be going 3D at MWC
  • The HTC Flyer specs leaked and were confirmed
  • Tmobile dropped the price of the Galaxy Tab to $249.99 with a new 2-year contract

  • We also learned from Moto that the Xoom will run stock Honeycomb, no Blur

  • Facebook denied any rumors that they’re working with HTC on a phone
  • The Motorola Atrix 4G cleared the good ol’ FCC
  • And finally, the N1 and Nexus S got minor updates, presumably to fix the SMS bug

Now that we’ve burned through all the devices, the really big news that broke last week was that Google released the SDK for Honeycomb! Surely it won’t be long before someone gets 3.0 running on something. We saw that the SDK has hints of smartphone support in it as well. In other news, JuiceDefender got a pretty big update, our own Phil Esposito did a video review of ROM Manager, we got an exclusive first hands-on with BioLock, and some NASA apps made it to the Android Market. Also in the news, number porting came to Google Voice, we saw a Tegra roadmap, Google launched a weather web app, Buzztime released a game app, and the Facebook app got an update.

Rounding up the week, LevelUp Studio updated their Beautiful Widgets app with a skin SDK, Playstation announced a cross-platform gaming platform, a Hulu rep spoke about Google TV, our own Damien Raine reviewed Keypurr Keyboard, and Google scheduled an Android event for February 2nd.

That’s about all the news we have time for, so join me next week as I cover all the news reported by our awesome AG crew!

  • And finally, the Samsung Galaxy S got some Gingerbread love in an unofficial ROM

In app news, Google opened up the App Inventor to all, so now you can make your own Android application. Also, HipLogic’s *Spark application was released as a full version, Thijs Koot gave us a How-To on the Android Emulator, the Facebook app added chat and push notifications, Google Voice recognition became more personalized for a few Froyo users, and we discovered that GameLoft is cooking up some more awesome Android games. The ESRB released an Android app, Words With Friends was kinda announced, Dungeon Defenders: First Wave ushered in a new gaming era for Android, Loopt 4.0 arrived, a Doodle scheduling app was released, as well as an E*Trade app and Trillian 1.0. We end the app segment with 2 things: Sony announced that their PlayStation app is coming to Android devices that sport 1.6 or above, and we got a good look at the new Android Market in action.

There’s not much else to tell about last week, so that’s your AndroidGuys Weekly RoundUp. Be sure to give us your thoughts below on anything mentioned above. We look forward to your feedback!
