Call of Duty: Modern Warfare three Team Announces App For Android at COD XP 2011

This image has no alt text

If you haven’t heard, there’s this little convention going on in Los Angeles, California known as Call of Duty XP 2011. As the name suggests, this convention is all about Call of Duty and its legion of fans who collect to watch previews, act out levels from the game and generally just have a very good ‘ol time. Surprisingly, the Call of Duty: Contemporary Warfare three team in fact made an announcement these days to their players letting them know of an app in the works for Android and iOS. Before you freak out — no this isn’t a game app. Rather this app will allow COD players to modify their weapons and gear although away from the game and attempting to function typically in society.

The app will be free to download, only requiring your log-in info to access your gear. No release date has been given but it’s certainly something to appear out for. Great — as if my friend Mike necessary another way to fuel his addiction.

ATT Announces First LTE Modems

AT&T, which plans to launch its 4G LTE network this summer in five cities and in 15 cities by year’s end, with a laptop card called the USBConnect Momentum 4G and a mobile hot-spot device called the Elevate 4G for its upcoming 700 MHz LTE network. No phones yet. The two products will be on display at an annual company showcase later today.

The Momentum laptop card will sell for $ 49.99 with a two-year contract. It has a slot for a MicroSD card that can hold up to 32GB of data. Elevate 4G hot-spot device will cost $ 69.99 with a two-year contract. It has a color 1.77-inch LCD display that shows the Wi-Fi network name and security key. It can be used for up to five hours and connect up to five devices. Like the Momentum, it has a slot to allow for a 32GB memory card.

AT&T is playing catch up to Verizon and Sprint Nextel in the 4G game. Both have true “4G” phones, using LTE and WiMAX, respectively.

In January, AT&T followed T-Mobile USA’s footsteps and rebranded their 3G HSPA+ network, with the 4G title. T-Mobile generally offers faster speed on their HSPA+ network, however, because they gang two AWS band channels together.

AT&T currently has three smartphones that support HSPA+: the HTC Inspire, Motorola Atrix, and Samsung Infuse. AT&T will also be the exclusive carrier of the dual-screen Sony S2, which will run on its HSPA+ network and feature connection to Sony’s online services, including PlayStation content.

Next year Verizon plans to deliver voice calls over LTE, using Voice over LTE (VoLTE) for video chatting and Skype. Currently, only the LG Revolution supports VoLTE. Unfortunately, while a VoLGA solution supports seamless call handover to/from the existing GSM/3G networks, it doesn’t support voice fallback on Verizon’s CDMA network. It also appears that there will be no handover between the LTE networks run by AT&T and Verizon, even though they use the same basic technology.

Sprint’s Nexus S 4G ($ 99) from Samsung is the WiMAX version of the official “Google Phone,” and comes with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, NFC and supports Google Offers and Google Wallet. Other Sprint WiMAX phones include the Motorola PHOTON 4G ($ 199) with a 1GHz dual-core processor, HTC EVO View 4G with a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon and HTC EVO 3D with a 4.3 inch 3D display.

Nokia announces the N9 as first MeeGo device, US not part of the launch

We have heard rumors of a MeeGo device coming from Nokia for some time and late last night Nokia announced the Nokia N9 MeeGo device. As much as I like Nokia products, I don’t know why they want to again have four operating systems to support with Symbian, Series 40, Windows Phone, and MeeGo. I think MeeGo will just end up being another hobby device, like the N900, and according to FoneArena the US is not a launch country so we may not even see it here until 2012.

Their press release states it will ship later this year and honestly I would rather just see Nokia devote these resources to Windows Phone or even improving Symbian rather than spending time on a phone that will appeal only to the most die hard Nokia fan who doesn’t care about smartphones being part of a complete ecosystem.

The N9 specifications include the following:

  • 1 GHz Arm Cortex A8 OMAP3630 processor
  • MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan operating system
  • Penta-band 3G radio (Yeah Nokia, why can’t anyone else do this?) at just 14.4 Mbps
  • 8 megapixel Carl Zeiss camera with dual LED flash
  • Front facing camera for video calls
  • 3.9 inch AMOLED display at 854×480 pixel resolution
  • NFC chip
  • Bluetooth 2.1
  • 802.11 b/g/n WiFi
  • A-GPS
  • 1450 mAh battery
  • Dimenions of 116.45 x 61.2 x 7.6 mm and 135 grams

It looks to have specs matching current devices, except for the processor and slower wireless cellular radio and in six months won’t stand out in the crowd at all. There are no buttons on the front and everything is controlled by the touchscreen interface. The N9 will come in Magenta, Cyan, and Black and the design does look beautiful with the curved Gorilla glass.

Check out some Nokia N9 resource sites for more information:

T-Mobile Announces Theoretical 42Mbps in More Than 50 Markets Across US

T-Mobile announced late last night/early this morning that they’ve doubled the speeds of their 4G network in more than fifty markets across the United States.  Touting a theoretical max speed of 42Mbps, it’s by far faster than anything we’re experiencing today.  Of course, theoretical means you’ll need all of the right conditions in place, including device, time of day, network traffic, weather, eye color, and ERA.  We’re only partially kidding her as real-world speeds will likely come in much lower every single time.  Still, the pieces are in place for a faster network and we can’t fault T-Mobile for that.

As of May 25th, the only device that offers support for the 42Mbps speeds on T-Mobile’s 4G HSPA+ network will be the Rocket 3.0 USB adapter.  Expected to run $ 99.99 with a qualifying contract (after a $ 50 mail in rebate), the Rocket 3.0 allows for 3G, 4G, and Wi-Fi connectivity.  Wanna snag one outright?  Be ready to pull $ 200 out of your wallet.  Sadly, there are no Android devices able to harness such ridiculous data speeds.

Here’s a bullet list of the markets that will allow for up to 42Mbps.

  • Albany, Georgia
  • Athens, Georgia
  • Atlanta, Georgia
  • Auburn, Alabama
  • Augusta, Georgia

The Rocket 3.0, manufactured by ZTE, is designed to take advantage of T-Mobile’s faster 4G network speeds. Capable of speeds twice as fast as T-Mobile’s previous 4G devices, customers in 42Mbps coverage are expected to experience more consistent 4G speeds when creating and sharing mobile content, streaming and connecting through mobile video, and participating in multiplayer gaming.

“We are continuing the aggressive expansion of America’s Largest 4G Network™, and also doubling our speeds in more than 50 markets this month,” said Neville Ray, chief technology officer, T-Mobile USA. “While customers with existing 3G and 4G devices will benefit from our continued network enhancements, new devices like the new Rocket 3.0 laptop stick will enable customers to reap the benefits of even faster 4G speeds.”

Postpaid monthly plans start at $ 29.99, and customers with a qualifying voice line of service with T-Mobile receive a 20 percent discount. Customers can also purchase the T-Mobile Rocket 3.0 without an annual contract for $ 199.99.  For more information about the T-Mobile Rocket 3.0, including pricing and plan details, visit www.t-mobile.com/broadbandgoesmobile.

As T-Mobile’s 4G network continues to expand and get faster, the company’s portfolio of 4G products is also growing. T-Mobile currently offers a dozen 4G-capable devices spanning smartphones, tablets and mobile broadband products that give customers access to America’s Largest 4G Network. The company has announced plans to deliver a total of 25 4G-capable devices in 2011.

T-Mobile’s 4G network already reaches more than 200 million Americans in 170 markets. By midyear, T-Mobile expects that more than 150 million Americans will have access to increased 4G speeds as T-Mobile upgrades its 4G network.

Verizon Announces Rural LTE Agreements

Verizon Wireless is extending its LTE service to rural customers, as part of the Verizon Wireless LTE in Rural America program. Introduced last June, the program is designed to fast-forward the delivery of 4G LTE service to rural areas.

To date, six rural carriers have announced their participation in the program and many others are in active negotiations with Verizon Wireless. Bluegrass Cellular, Cellcom, Cross Wireless, Pioneer Cellular, Strata Networks and Thumb Wireless have leased spectrum covering, in total, more than 1.8 million people and nearly 58,000 square miles in Kentucky, Oklahoma, Michigan, Wisconsin and Utah.

Through the LTE in Rural America program, Verizon Wireless works with rural companies to collaboratively build and operate a 4G LTE network in their areas using the tower and backhaul assets of the rural company and Verizon Wireless’ core 4G LTE equipment and 700 MHz spectrum. Verizon Wireless customers also will be able to roam on 4G LTE networks built by program participants.

“These agreements enable rural companies to take advantage of our scale and network infrastructure, and bring the benefits of 4G services to their customers quickly and efficiently,” said Molly Feldman, vice president of business development for Verizon Wireless. “Companies in the program are working with our regional network teams to finalize their build plans and get their networks up and running.”

Verizon Wireless launched its 4G LTE network last December in 38 markets and more than 60 commercial airports, covering one-third of all Americans. The company will expand its 4G LTE network to an additional 140 markets by the end of 2011 and plans to cover its entire 3G footprint with 4G by the end of 2013. Verizon plans to offer voice over LTE using VoLTE with rich communications services and optimize performance on its commercial 4G LTE network during 2011. Commercial services are expected to be available in 2012.

T-Mobile Announces Vibrant 4G, Coming This Month

Well, it’s probably not the most popular decision, but Tmo and Samsung officially announced the Vibrant 4G. As expected, it’s more or less exactly like the original Vibrant, with Froyo, an HSPA+ radio, front-facing camera, and T-Mobile TV. There’s no official date or pricing, but we do know it’ll be available in February, so we expect to see it within the next few weeks. In the press release, Tmobile touts their 4G speeds until they can’t tout them anymore. Tmo also announced that they’ve launched HSPA+ in 8 new cities, including Chattanooga, TN, and Rochester, MN.

There’s not much to say on this one. It follows the whole Vibrant-Froyo fiasco from a few weeks ago. But since we first got word of this device, hell hath frozen over, as the original Vibrant got its precious Froyo. Anyone going to pick one of these up when it launches? Anyone going to buy one just to throw it on the ground and spit in Samsung’s face? Sound off in the comments! You can check out the full press release below.

ARM Announces 2 New Processors

ARM is offering two new processors — the Cortex-R5 and Cortex-R7 — which will help next-generation smartphones and tablets take better advantage of faster broadband, the company said on Monday.

With LTE, WiMAX and HSPA increasing data speeds, devices have to keep up. The Cortex-R5 and Cortex-R7 processors can keep up with single or dual cores, and clock speeds at up to 1.66MHz or 2.53MHz, respectively. One core can, for example, be instructed to handle download traffic and the other upload traffic, according to Andrew Frame, product manager at ARM. Smartphone vendors can also choose to lower the clock speed, to lower power requirements.

The Cortex-R5 is already shipping to ARM’s partners, and the Cortex-R7 will join it in the third quarter. Products that user the latter are expected to start shipping towards the end of the year.

At CES 2011, the momentum behind ARM chips was solidified when Microsoft announced the next version of Windows will support ARM, and when graphics company Nvidia announced it is making its first GPU/CPU hybrid chip based on ARM Cortex A15 processors.

In related news, Intel announced today it has completed the $1.4 Billion acquisition of Infineon AG’s Wireless Solution business , to tie baseband processors into the company’s CPU solutions. The new wireless business will now be called Intel Mobile Communications (IMC) and will operate as a standalone business entity within Intel’s Architecture Group to enable continuity of existing customer sales, projects and support, including ARM-based products.

Intel also showed off its Medfield-based smartphone. The Medfield platform will include a power-efficient version of the Atom processor, which will be integrated inside a chip code-named Penwell. Medfield processors are expected to debut in shipping devices later this year.

Google Announces Android Event For Wednesday, Feb. 2

“A Taste of What’s New from Android” is the headline of an email Google sent to press today. They are hosting an Android-specific event this coming Wednesday, February 2, in Mountain View. The event will feature “an in-depth look at Honeycomb, Android ecosystem news, and hands-on demos.”

What could the Big G be announcing? We do know from CES that they did not showcase everything that Honeycomb has to offer. Maybe a Honeycomb tie-in for phones? Plans to decrease “fragmentation”? A Nexus tablet? Who knows!

The presentation begins at 10:00 a.m. PST on Wednesday, February 2, and will be live streamed to youtube.com/android.

Begin speculation!

Dubbed Playstation Suite, this channel will be distributing certified Playstation titles to compatible Android phones, tablets, and the next-gen Playstation Portable device. If you Android doesn’t have a slide-out keyboard (for shame!), the Playstation game app will simulate a keyboard on-screen for you. Sony has announced that PSOne titles will be emulated in the Playstation Suite, but they have not yet announced any prices or what the specific requirements will be — but obviously the Xperia Play is likely at the top of the list. We expect more details to be announced at Mobile World Congress in a few weeks.

Samsung Announces 4 New Devices – Nothing Special Here

Today, Samsung announced 4 new mid-level Android devices. All of these should be available for hands-on looks during Mobile World Congress which is Barcelona Spain, in just a few weeks. With the high sales of the Galaxy S and all of it’s variants, Samsung has put together a few mid-level devices to compete with entry level individuals. Take a look below at the photo line up.

From left to right we have the  - Galaxy Ace – Galaxy Fit – Galaxy Gio – galaxy Mini

  • Galaxy Ace: The Ace sports a 3.5-inch HVGA screen (320×480) running Android 2.2 with an 800MHz processor and 5MP camera with flash. It’s available in Russia now, and later in Europe, India and China.
  • Galaxy Fit: The fit has a 3.31-inch QVGA (240×320) screen with Android 2.2, a 5MP camera, 600MHz processor. It’s available in February in Russia, with India, Europe and South America coming later.
  • Galaxy Gio: The Gio rocks a 3.2-inch HVGA (320×480) screen with Android 2.2, a 3MP camera and an 800MHz processor. Coming to Russia, Europe, India and China.
  • Galaxy Mini: The Mini has a svelte 3.14-inch QVGA (320×240) touchscreen with a 600MHz processor, 3MP camera and Android 2.2. Available in Russia, coming to Europe, China and India.

In my opinion we here in states are lucky. Currently none of these devices are slated to hit our side of the ocean as of yet. That doesn’t mean they might not bring one or all of them over on container ships at some point.
