Verizon Announces (3G) iPhone 4G

Verizon Wireless plans to sell Apple’s iPhone for as low as $200 starting next month, the carrier said today. Verizon, the largest cellular company in the United States, serving some 93 million customers, said it would start selling the phone on February 10, ending AT&T’s three-year old status as the exclusive U.S. provider for the iPhone.

The iPhone 4 through Verizon Wireless will run on Verizon’s CDMA network – not their newly minted “4G” network running the latest LTE technology. iPhone 4 on Verizon Wireless will also include new Personal Hotspot capabilities allowing customers to use iPhone 4 to connect up to five Wi-Fi enabled devices.

The iPhone 4 will be available on the Verizon Wireless for a suggested retail price of $199.99 for the 16GB model and $299.99 for the 32GB model with a new two year customer agreement. iPhone 4 will be available at more than 2,000 Verizon Wireless Communications Stores nationwide, online at www.verizonwireless.com/iphone, and at Apple Retail Stores.

What will it mean to AT&T? Not much, according to Ralph de la Vega, chief executive of AT&T’s wireless business. It is a 3G phone, not a faster LTE device. AT&T makes the case that their HSPA+ network is faster than Verizon’s EVDO Rev. A network, based on CDMA technology.

Credit Suisse estimates that AT&T will have 18.4 million iPhone subscribers at the end of 2010, of which 15.9 million, or 86%, will be under contract. Gene Munster, an analyst at Piper Jaffray, estimates that Verizon could activate as many as nine million iPhones in the coming year, or as much as 40 percent of its total smartphone sales for the year, reports the NY Times. Up to 6.5 million of those subscribers could be defectors from AT&T, he said.

AT&T diversified its smartphone lineup last week at CES, and touted new 4G Android devices from Motorola, HTC and Samsung. AT&T says it will launch 20, 4G devices this year with a dozen Android devices on tap in 2011.

AT&T’s Chief Marketing Officer David Christopher said it will offer a Motorola’s Honeycomb Android tablet in the second quarter running off its current network. LTE tablets will follow in the summer.

AT&T devices will use both their HSPA+ and LTE network. Their LTE transition will go through 2013, but won’t begin until after the first half of the year.

AT&T CTO John Donavan said combining HSPA+ and LTE results in better hand-offs between services.

Meanwhile, Sprint Nextel, introduced two WiMAX devices –– the HTC EVO Shift 4G with a Qualcomm MSM7630 (800 MHz) processor, and the MiFi 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot by Novatel Wireless that are far cheaper than the devices being sold by its rivals. The WiMAX-enabled EVO Shift, which sports a slide-out QWERTY keypad, is only $149.99 and Mobile Hotspot costs $49.99 (on a 2 year contract).

The bottom line is whatever works. If service is poor where you need it, iPhone fans may now have an option of jumping ship to Verizon.

If you want a “real” 4G phone, however, Sprint/Clearwire is still the only game in town…unless you buy into the “HSPA+ is 4G” argument of T-Mobile USA, of course. Or you could wait. Verizon will make available four new 4G LTE smartphones by the middle of 2011, including the HTC Thunderbolt, LG Revolution, Motorola Droid Bionic and Samsung 4G LTE.

Ovi Daily App announces six 2010 software contest winners

Back in mid-December I let you know about the Ovi Daily App Must Have Apps contest and I was informed that Nokia has announced the winners and are working on notifying the winner of the N8. The N8 winner was selected from the group of people who correctly picked the six winning apps and it was definitely not me.

The six winning apps were as follows:

  • Game: Doodle Jump
  • Business/Productivity: Mobile Documents
  • Entertainment: Touchnote Postcards
  • Music: Shazam
  • Social networking: Gravity
  • Utilities: Joikuspot WiFi Hot Spot

I picked 4 out of 6, but missed the Mobile Documents and Touchnote Postcards apps. I actually just installed Mobile Documents thanks to Rita’s recommendation, but have never tried the Touchnote Postcards app.

Did any readers pick all six of these correctly?

T-Mobile Announces 7″ Dell Streak

Dell and T-Mobile USA, today unveiled Dell’s new 7-inch Android tablet, the Streak 7, a tablet specifically designed for T-Mobile’s super-fast version of HSPA+.

During the event, T-Mobile said it plans to double the speed of its 4G network this year and announced that in 2011 it will launch at least 25 new 4G devices, starting with its first “4G” tablet — the Dell Streak 7. A laptop stick, developed by ZTE, is slated to launch in the first half of 2011, and is said to be capable of delivering T-Mobile’s peak download speeds of 42 Mbps.

T-Mobile’s CTO Neville Ray said its data traffic is doubling every seven months and will be able to keep pace with demand, using Ethernet backhaul to 70 percent of its HSPA+ 21 network and is moving up to HSPA+ 42 this year.

Yesterday, T-Mobile and LG announced their upcoming Android Honeycomb-powered T-Mobile G-Slate, although that tablet isn’t expected to be available for several months. Google’s Android platform now powers three tablets for T-Mobile, the Samsung Galaxy Tab, Dell Streak 7 tablet and soon the 10″ LG Slate.

The Streak 7 combines a seven-inch WVGA touch screen with Gorilla Glass, Android 2.2, a dual core 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, and full support for Adobe Flash.

A rear-facing 5 megapixel camera and a front-facing 1.3 megapixel camera preloaded with the Qik Video Chat application, provide video-calling over T-Mobile’s network as well as Wi-Fi.

The new Dell Streak 7 Tablet is expected to be available in the U.S. in the coming weeks at T-Mobile retail stores, and direct from Dell. No word on price. Last week T-Mobile reduced the price of the 7″ Samsung Tablet from $600 to $500.

T-Mobile says it can deliver HSPA+ speeds in 100 major metropolitan areas (with backhaul in place), covering 185 million people in the U.S. T-Mobile claims it will increase the maximum possible data speeds offered on its upgraded 3G network to 42 Mbit/s in 2011, up from the 21 Mbit/s, the maximum speed limit of AT&T’s flavor of HSPA+. Their HSPA+ network will go to 42, and be available to about two-thirds of the network — or 140 million pops — later this year.

The 21-Mbit/s HSPA+ upgrade is the fastest that the wireless technology can be cranked with software — rather than hardware — updates, such as MIMO architecture. Qualcomm says systems with 2×2 MIMO and 10 MHz of bandwidth, whether HSPA+ or LTE, provide similar capacity, peak and cell-edge data rates, as well as similar latency. Still, 64-QAM modulation, often used in cable modems, is pretty fragile over the air and only effective very near a tower.

Operators might be able to achieve peak data rates of more than 650Mbps, thanks to an HSPA standard called Long Term HSPA Evolution, being driven by T-Mobile USA and Nokia Siemens Networks, who aim to make it available for commercial deployment by 2013.

How T-Mobile will jump to LTE remains a mystery. Perhaps we’ll find out next month in Barcelona.

Here is the full press release, but I’ll be bringing you more info, details, and video as it comes out:

T-Mobile USA CEO and President Philipp Humm

Highlights the Company’s Network Leadership

and Focus on Fueling Data Adoption

T-Mobile Doubles the Speed of America’s Largest 4G Network and Introduces Its First 4G Tablet: the Dell Streak 7

LAS VEGAS, Nev. and BELLEVUE, Wash. — Jan. 6, 2011 Today at the 2011 International CES, T-Mobile USA CEO and President Philipp Humm highlighted the company’s network leadership, supported by Nielsen data confirming that T-Mobile delivered the fastest wireless data performance in the top 100 U.S. markets during the second half of 2010.1 In addition, Humm announced the nationwide availability of T-Mobile’s 4G network, now reaching approximately 200 million people in 100 major metropolitan areas.

“In 2010, we delivered on our ambitious goal to become America’s largest 4G network, and this year our customers will be able to experience speeds equivalent to home broadband while on the go,” said Humm. “We’ll continue to focus on fueling the adoption of mobile data, by offering innovative and affordable smartphones and tablets, as well as aggressive data plan pricing and rich and compelling data services.”

T-Mobile also unveiled plans to double the speed of its 4G network this year, which will be capable of delivering peak download speeds of up to 42 Mbps. Moreover, the company announced that in 2011 it will launch at least 25 new 4G devices, starting with its first 4G tablet — the Dell™ Streak 7, expected to be available at T-Mobile stores across the country in the coming weeks. The company vowed to aggressively expand and evolve its 4G smartphone portfolio, launching additional devices capable of delivering peak download speeds of up to 21 Mbps in the first half of 2011, and smartphones capable of delivering peak download speeds of up to 42 Mbps in the second half of the year.

The cutting-edge download speed was demonstrated today by company representatives using a T-Mobile laptop stick developed by ZTE, capable of delivering peak download speeds of up to 42 Mbps and slated to launch in the first half of 2011. By doubling the speed of its 4G network, T-Mobile will offer its customers an unprecedented wireless experience, fueled by improved performance in the use of rich media applications, including creating and sharing mobile content, streaming video, and participating in multi-player gaming and videoconferencing.

The company expects 140 million Americans in 25 metro areas to have access to these increased 4G speeds by mid-2011. T-Mobile’s enhanced speed capabilities will also benefit its customers using existing 3G devices for data services, as the backward-compatible network enables 3G devices to achieve their maximum speed performance.

“We are pleased to support T-Mobile as it continues to deploy and develop its 4G network, which today is delivering next-generation speeds and performance to hundreds of millions of customers,” said Angel Ruiz, president and CEO, Ericsson North America. “We are confident that HSPA+ will continue to offer a viable and cost-effective alternative to LTE and WiMAX, providing a comparable 4G experience to customers for the foreseeable future. And, with a strong and growing ecosystem of network equipment and handsets, we anticipate that HSPA+ can develop into one of the most advanced technology platforms in the industry.”

“Consumers are increasingly embracing the benefits of smartphones, with 80 percent of U.S. mobile customers wanting a smartphone, and as many as 100 million of them not yet having one,” said Cole Brodman, chief marketing officer, T-Mobile USA. “Our compelling offering of affordable broadband devices and consumer-friendly data plan pricing will enable customers to step up to mobile data and 4G, and our customers will not pay a toll to ride on our 4G superhighway.”

LG Officially Announces Optimus Black

Last night we told you that LG would be announcing the Optimus Black at CES this week, and today they made good. As promised, it’s just 9.2mm thick at its largest point and 6mm at its smallest, and is showing off a sharp 4-inch screen that is promised to still be energy efficient. In spite of its thin build, LG has squeezed in a 1,500mAh battery, which they are promising will last for an entire day’s use — a rarity in Android devices, so here’s hoping they can deliver. They’ve also confirmed the 2 megapixel front-facing camera, and that while the device will launch with Android 2.2 (Froyo), it WILL in fact be receiving the update to Gingerbread. Look for the device to launch within the first half of the year. Read past the break for the full press release.

Sprint Announces “4G” Tablets in 2011

Sprint says “4G” Tablets coming in 2011

Paget Alves, Sprint’s President of Business Markets, said in an interview that business customers are especially interested in tablets.  ”The adoption rate for tablets in the business sector is much, much faster than we expected,” he said.  Generally business users are the type who would benefit from the lower weight and could use portability that a tablet could bring.  Alves noted the strong interest from CIO’s (Chief Information Officers) in outfitting their workforce with tablets.

Unfortunately there was no talk about which manufacturer or Operating System they might offer.  There are any number of tablets being designed, Intel recently stated that manufacturers have chosen Intel processors for 35 different models.  This leaves a huge question mark for Android users.  Android is a natural fit considering the Epic and Evo are both 4G phones, and have proven to be hugely popular for Sprint.  Yet there are so many tablets rumored to be in the design or test phase that it could be the RIM playbook or even a Windows tablet.  I guess only time will tell.

    Interesting side note on “4G”

    From the Forbes article….

The trend of branding all fast networks 4G will “eventually backfire,” Alves added. “Throwing around that term will make it less meaningful,” he said. “Then it will be more about delivering what people expect from a ‘4G’ experience.”

Personally, I couldn’t begin to count the hours I’ve spent on Frogger, between old-school arcades and the NES and various other platforms over the years.   It’s always been one of my favorites, so it’s the one that excites me the most.  I’m a sucker for word games, too, so I’m sure I’ll check out WordMix.
