Android Apps: Longer Tail

Chitika estimates that Verizon carries about 23.9 percent of American iPhones, leaving AT&T with 76.1 percent.

Verizon’s share of iPhone site visitors continues to increase, with Verizon’s iPhone gaining industry share at the expense of Android devices, notes the industry researcher.

Nielsen has located that the best-10 apps in the Android Industry account for a whopping 43% of app usage on Android devices.

The best-50 apps in the Marketplace account for 61% of all usage, which indicates the overwhelming bulk of Android apps account for just 39% of app usage

“With 250,000+ Android apps available at the time of this writing, that indicates the remaining 249,950+ apps have to compete for the remaining 39 percent of the pie,” writes Don Kellogg, Director of Telecom Investigation & Insights, on Nielsen’s blog. “Despite the hundreds of thousands of apps obtainable for Android, a quite modest proportion of apps make up the vast majority of time spent,” writes Kellogg.

Apps Enter the Twilight Zone

There is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call The Twilight Zone. — Rod Serling

Mobile broadband subscriptions are on track to surpass 1 billion in 2011 only months after reaching half a billion, according to Ericsson. There were 763 million broadband wireless subscribers in the world by the end of 2010, figures InStat.

Shipments of smartphones, tablets and other app-enabled devices will overtake PCs shipments in the next 18 months, says market research firm IDC. According to In-Stat, unit shipments for smartphones will reach nearly 850 million by 2015.

Brian Chen, who works for Wired.com, has written a book called Always On about what it means to be constantly connected.

He explores the uses of the iPhone in education, medicine and law enforcement.

He spoke to Dave Davies of Fresh Air about the book:

DAVIES: Now apart from the fun stuff like games or being able to scan a barcode in a grocery store with your iPhone, you talk about some applications which might fundamentally alter some of the important occupations, some of the ways we relate to each other. And you write about what Abilene Christian University in Texas has done with iPhones. Tell us about that.

Mr. CHEN: Abilene Christian University has a really interesting iPhone program where for about two years, I think, they’ve been handing out free iPhones to every incoming freshman.

They have teachers get in front of the classroom, and instead of lecturing students , they say, OK, so here’s the topic we’re going to discuss today. Take out your iPhones and go ahead and search on the Web or search Wikipedia and let’s have a conversation about where we want to take this discussion and look for good information on how you can contribute to this.

DAVIES: OK. Let’s talk about some other areas where you see iPhone and iPhone applications as potentially transformative. Medicine, what are we seeing there?

Mr. CHEN: Personal health monitoring I think is going to be a pretty big thing in the next few years. And something I mentioned in the book is a group of researchers who are working on a digital contact lens that communicates with a smartphone, potentially.

So the contact lens takes information and transfers it, wirelessly, to the smartphone. And what the contact lens is doing is it’s collecting information from the surface of your eye.

What’s interesting about the eye is that the eye is like the little door into the body. And you can collect information about, say, cholesterol or glucose levels, blood pressure and transfer this information to the smartphone.

DAVIES: You’re talking about a contact lens that has electronics in it that you insert in your eyes?

Mr. CHEN: Right. A digital contact lens with wireless transmitters that transmits information to the smartphone application. This is still in development and it’s a little bit far away, I think. And they’re currently testing it on rabbits.

DAVIES: How might law enforcement be changed by this technology?

Mr. CHEN: What some police officers are doing is they’re testing this application called Moris.

Moris is an application that enables police officers to scan fingerprints of suspects and also scan their eyeballs and cross-reference that information with the database that they have back at the police station. Made by BI2 Technologies, the scanner is attached to an iPhone.

Cloud-based processing can now provide supercomputer power to mobile devices.

Elemental’s Cloud processing uses Amazon Web services for GPU processing in the cloud.

There are now over 10,000 medical apps in the App Store; a big jump from the 1,544 apps last year. Houston Neal narrowed it down to a list of the 70 best apps on his “Best Medical iPhone Apps for Doctors and Med Students” website.

Microwave chips aren’t just for communications anymore. They enable new sensor applications.

Imagine an Intel i7 handheld with Nvidia GPUs in a couple years. Like Wordlens for doctors. Nanoscience and metamaterials are opening new worlds.

Amazon’s new cloud application, Elastic Beanstalk, manages cloud applications automatically. Developers simply upload their application and Elastic Beanstalk automatically handles the deployment details of capacity provisioning, load balancing and auto-scaling.

Loyalty reward card apps go head to head – CardStar vs Key Ring Reward Cards

Loyalty Cards on CB Background

The majority of us probably have had at one time or another a loyalty reward card from a store or two. You know, those little plastic debit cards or the miniscule keychain version. From there it just snowballs. Next thing you know, you’ve got 20 of those little plastic nusiances hanging from your keychain. I’ll sign up for just about anything if it saves me a buck or two. When I heard about CardStar for BlackBerry back in May of last year, I was ecstatic! No more having my husband complain that the cards hit his knee when he drove my car or the added bulk when he carried my keys in his pocket. All my cards were safely relocated onto my device and all were still easily accessible when I went out shopping. I’ve used the app numerous times and never had much of a problem with it except for a difficult scanner here and there. Yesterday I ran across an app called Key Ring Reward Cards in BlackBerry App World. I was very curious to see how this app would compare to CardStar and if I’d prefer one over the other. Keep reading after the jump to see which app came out on top!

Apps & e-Books: Merging with EPUB-3?

It was the best of times and the worst of times at the Digital Book Conference at the BookExpo America in New York City this week. Hardcover and paperback sales were down while e-book sales had exponential growth.

While tablet publishing is creating tectonic shockwaves thoughout the 500 year old publishing industry, both paper and electronic publishers were looking on the bright side.

Amazon started BookExpo with a bang announcing that it now sells more Kindle books than print books. Free Kindle books were excluded and if included would make the number even higher.

Google Books has 15 million titles available (of which three million are free), 7,000 publishers signed on, 40,000 partners worldwide, and more than 100 million pages read on Google’s online e-reading platform More than 25% of Google Books customers read primarily use Google’s web reader, 25% read from phones, 20% use e-readers, and the remaining 30% read on tablets.

The e-book revolution will allow a larger number of smaller players to find their audience.

E-Reader announcements included:

  • Barnes & Noble reveals a new $ 139 Nook E-Reader which will ship in June. It comes with a 6-inch Pearl E Ink display and a touch screen. As with previous models, such as the $ 250 Color Nook, readers can browse entire e-books in the Barnes & Noble physical stores over Wi-Fi, and share recommendations with friends via Facebook and Twitter. The new Nook runs Android 2.1 and has 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, with free Wi-Fi access at all Barnes & Noble stores.
  • Amazon launched a $ 164, 3G-enabled, ad-supported Kindle. The 4 models of the Kindle are now priced at $ 114 (wi-fi only, ad-supported), $ 139 (wi-fi only), $ 164 (3G-enabled, ad-supported), and $ 189 (3G-enabled). Amazon began selling hardcover and paperback books in July 1995.
  • Kobo announced the $ 129 Kobo eReader Touch Edition, with the new Pearl 6″ E Ink 16 level grey screen and a touch screen. It also announced that its current model, the Kobo Wireless eReader (as in no wireless), drops from $ 140 to $ 99.99, the first e-reader to break the $ 100 barrier. Borders Books is a proponent of the Kobo reader.

Arguably, however, the big news was the announcement of EPUB 3. It’s the International Digital Publishing Forum’s (IDPF) latest standard for digital publications and documents. EPUB is designed for reflowable content, that can be optimized for a variety of displays or devices. The format is meant to function as a single format for publishers as well as end users. Digital Rights Management can be added on top of it.

EPUB 3 is by far the most significant advance in the over ten year history of the IDPF,” said George Kerscher, President, IDPF. It aligns EPUB with HTML5 and adds support for key emerging requirements including video, audio, interactivity, vertical writing and other global language capabilities, along with styling and layout enhancements.

There are over 100 active participants behind it means improved conformance and accessibility. “Every digital book will be an accessible book now,” says Kerscher.

Primarily, the EPUB 3 specification was formed from the working groups of the IDPF with the cooperation of over twenty companies who have come on board to implement it to their devices. iBooks already support a subset of EPUB 3 and Adobe Digital Editions will soon, although devices that actually read the new spec aren’t available yet.

EPUB 2 files still work on any device that uses EPUB 3, but new features include improved SVG and JavaScript support, MathML, semantic tagging, and embedded font support. The XHTML content with navigational structure and metadata in a zip-based package has made it feasible to make all of these features work.

Some people in the industry believe that ebooks, with embedded multimedia, will now resemble and eventually merge with today’s standalone phone and tablet applications.

Apps of the Day: PacDroid, Memonic and More

This image has no alt text

Hump Day is back! Another day, another bag of apps. Considering how effortless it is to search the Android market and download applications these days, we’ve been swimming in a sea of these apps and have no shortage of them to talk about. The ones we came across today are some of the most interesting and best that deserved a shout, though, so take my word when I say that you should at least check out the market listing for each one.

PacDroid Live Wallpaper – It’s PacMan, except with an Android robot. It’s a live wallpaper. And instead of pellets, it eats Apples. With a capital A. What more could you want? There isn’t much to it other than that, but you can change that Apple if your green friend is allergic to them. Go ahead and grab it for free. [Market]

Memonic – In a world filled with note-taking applications, it seems there can never be too many. Memonic has finally brought their wares to the Android platform. Like Evernote and many other competitors, you can organize notes with tags and notebooks, save a picture as a note, and sync all of that back to the cloud for use on the web or other platforms. [Market]

GO Launcher EX – We’re sure you folks have heard of this one before, but one of our favorite readers asked us to give it a shout. Go Launcher Ex is yet another home alternative, but is quickly up and coming as many’s favorite. All of the things you’d want are here, such as themes, scrollable widgets, fancy transition animations, a customizable dock and more. And the developer provides frequent updates that improve and add more things than they break. Go ahead and take the free download. [Market]

Paradise Island – It’s no Sim City contender, but being able to build your own island and civilization on Paradise Island is loads of fun. The city lives while you sleep, so you never know what you’re going to face when you start it back up in the morning. There are tons of buildings to be made, tons of people to make happy, and tons of experience points to earn. Best of all, it’s free with no ads. (But don’t be surprised to see micro-transactions pushed on you.) [Market]

The BlackBerry PlayBook Application Initiative: Working together to get the third party apps we want ASAP!

We Want Your Apps!

The BlackBerry PlayBook has been on the market for a little over a month now, and while we’ve seen the catalog of PlayBook apps grow, we have yet to see most of the BIG TIME services that sooo many of us use daily on our computers and other mobile devices come to the Tablet OS platform (seriously, I can’t even imagine going back to life without Kindle, Skype, Dropbox or Evernote and desperately want these apps on my PlayBook).

Not wanting to wait around in limbo, PlayBook owners have been reaching out to companies via email, phone and forums since the PlayBook’s launch to find out when these apps are going to become available. The responses have been mixed -  some favorable and some that are less than inspiring. For example, the response I received from Skype was that they’re in a "wait and see mode" and "certainly not committing anything at this stage around development for PlayBook." This wait and see mode seems to be a popular trend which means it’s on us CrackBerry Nation to let these companies know that we don’t want to wait for their apps… we need them ASAP!

To that end, CrackBerry forums member technomensch had the inspired idea to startup the BlackBerry PlayBook Applications Initiative thread, which puts into one place all of the user outreach to these companies. Follow the link below to jump over to the thread where you can find out how you can help contribute to the cause and see where these popular companies are at with their PlayBook apps. Let’s make it happen!!

Apps of the Day [5/20]: Nano Panda, BattleBallz and More

This image has no alt text

It’s time for another edition of Apps of the Day, covering what’s hot and new in the Android Market. Just a few apps eking their way in before the weekend, but you’ll want to check them out. Nano Panda comes highly recommended, but don’t take our word for it. Actually take our word for it, the word you will find just below.

Nano Panda – Fluffy, small pandas. Nothing’s better than that, right? Nano Panda is a puzzle game by Unit 9 apps that has you destroying “evil atoms that have infiltrated a science lab.” I have to be honest – this game took a while to grow on me. It’s weird, to put it simply. But it’s unique, gets fun and gives you a challenge after a while. If that doesn’t pique your interest, then the music alone will help soothe you on a bad day. Just don’t let the few performance issues spark that bad day back up. [Market]

Credit Usage – This is a simple application, but one I’m sure many could use. Credit Usage offers an alternative to some carriers’ metering solutions. Some provide their own apps, others allow uses to see usage online, and others don’t give you the option at all. And even for those who do present you with said information, often times than not it isn’t very flexible. Credit Usage allows you to meter anything – SMS messages, MMS messages, free calls to others in your countries, international calls, data – everything you could want, really. If you fit the bill of the type of person who’ll need this, be sure to give it a shot. [Market]

BattleBallz – It’s Brick Breaker on steroids. Sort of. I really can’t describe what BattleBallz is because there is so much going on at one time. That’s not a bad thing, though. People who like seeing explosions, lights and chaos will love this game. And it definitely takes a lot of skill to master. Pocketeers boasts great sound and graphics, and more than it looks and sounds good, it has substance. Check it out for just under $ 2. [Market]

Eric Schmidt Claims Almost All Mobile Apps Will Be Built With HTML5

We’ve heard the discussion about HTML eventually taking over the universe but I think this may be the first time I’ve heard Eric Schmidt say it directly and so succinctly. I’d have to double-check word for word, but the quote I heard was:

“HTML 5 is the way almost all applications will be built, including for phones.”

That kind of blows my mind. If HTML 5 takes over then is Android really that big of an advantage for Google? Won’t all the other platforms be able to leverage HTML 5 to create competitors more on par with Android? Google’s big business is advertising so… do they even care?

Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments and feel free to vote in the poll!

Newer reports again suggesting the BlackBerry PlayBook will run Android apps

BlackBerry PlayBook and QNX-OS to run Android Apps

Although the topic of Android apps being able to run on the Blackberry PlayBook (or QNX in general) isn’t exactly new news, Bloomberg today posted some new details about what they have been hearing about the happenings at Research In Motion. According to the article, Research In Motion has allegedly changed their minds about using the Dalvik Virtual Machine on the Blackberry PlayBook based on the patent disputes happening between Oracle Corp. and Google. Instead, they are opting to take another path that will allow Android applications to run on the PlayBook. No mention of what other method they will be using at this time but a lot of companies have been creating virtualization platforms as of late, the latest being Myriad which has recently announced their Myriad Alien Dalvik. The Myriad Alien Dalvik allows Android apps to run seamlessly on other platforms and will be demoed at Mobile World Congress later this month using Nokia’s MeeGo platform. That’s not to say Myriad Alien Dalvik will be used but nothing is stopping Research In Motion from reaching out to any other virtualization partners to help out.

HTC Inspire 4G Allows Sideloading Apps, Doesn’t Advertise It

This image has no alt text

Earlier today we published a report from AndroidCentral claiming the HTC Inspire 4G still wouldn’t allow sideloading of apps on the AT&T network. While it’s true that Installing Apps from Unknown Sources isn’t an option in the Menu system, we’re learning that you CAN still get the job done. And here is video proof:

So while they don’t advertise it, the Inspire 4G will indeed allow sideloading apps… at least the video above is an indication. By launch day, we might see something different.
