Soooo … it’s September 17th right now, and if you bear in mind from our 2nd to last podcast we declared nowadays AT&ampT picket day if the BlackBerry Bold 9900 didn’t show up. Following up on our petition to AT&ampT, I took matters into my own hands and blocked my day off to do my CrackBerry duty. With my Verizon Bold 9930 and Rogers Bold 9900 in hand and the power of the CrackBerry nation behind me, I set out for my nearby AT&ampT store to get my picket on. As you can see in the video above, the shop was entirely dead (since they don’t have the Bold 9900 .. duh) and regrettably they wouldn’t let me film inside. I did do some solo picketing for as lengthy as I could though. I don’t know if it helped our cause or not, but regardless … come on AT&ampT … give us the BlackBerry Bold 9900!!!

Reuters says AT&T will soon present a propose a two part remedy to the DOJ to salvage its planned $ 39 billion merger with T-Mobile USA.

Even as AT&T gears up for a lengthy court battle against the Justice Department, AT&T is prepared to make concessions to address concerns that the T-Mobile deal is anti-competitive and could trigger wireless costs to rise.

This two-track strategy will enable AT&T to try to uncover a settlement just before the lawsuit reaches the court.

“AT&T is fairly determined that they can locate a answer, and they are fairly confident,” one of the sources stated, requesting anonymity as the talks are private.

Particulars of AT&T’s proposed settlement had been not offered, but it is expected to contain pledges to preserve T-Mobile’s reasonably inexpensive mobile subscription plans, and asset sales.

AT&T might have to sell up to 25 percent of T-Mobile’s enterprise, including airwaves and clients, two sources said, to address the government’s concern that just three organizations would control 90 percent of the U.S. wireless market if the merger goes by means of.

But even if AT&T wins its case against the Justice Department in court or if it strikes a deal with the Justice Department, the organization must still get approval from the Federal Communications Commission, points out C/Net.

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said this week, “Competition is an crucial component of the FCC’s statutory public interest analysis, and although our procedure is not complete, the record just before this agency also raises significant concerns about the impact of the proposed transaction on competition.”

The Justice Department said that the proposed $ 39 billion transaction would substantially lessen competition for mobile wireless telecommunications services across the United States. Deputy Attorney General James Cole said the merger would result in greater prices, poorer good quality services, fewer choices and fewer innovative merchandise for the millions of American shoppers who rely on mobile wireless services in their everyday lives.

The DOJ’s complaint (pdf, 25 pages), was filed Wednesday in federal court.

Light Reading explores What AT&T Loses Without having T-Mobile. That would be about $ 6B in forfeit fees. T-Mobile USA would get $ 39B divided by 34 million buyers, or about $ 1,147 per head.

AT&ampT consumers will lastly be joining the up to Android loved ones with Gingerbread updates promised for all of AT&ampT’s Android devices. For those AT&ampT users who are not already rooted and running some form of Gingerbread currently, this is a welcome addition to the Android household on AT&ampT. Samsung’s ever fearless Captivate is amongst those phones receiving the Gingerbread update along with the: Atrix, Inspire, Pheonix, Crossover and Infuse.  The updates will be delivered via the OTA feature nevertheless, due to the size of the updates the update could be very best suited to install via Wi-Fi. Gingerbread is expected to improve the overall functionality and speed of these Android Phones.

Federal regulators have asked AT&T provide proof on an airwave shortage, reports Bloomberg. The FCC in a request posted on its website today asked AT&T to provide “all plans, analyses and reports discussing the relative network spectrum capacity constraints of the company.”

AT&T in its April 21 filing with the FCC seeking approval of the merger said it “faces network spectrum and capacity constraints more severe than those of any other wireless provider.”

The FCC and Justice Department are vetting the deal, in a review AT&T executives have said will take about a year. The merger would combine the second- and fourth-largest carriers to create a new market leader, ahead of No. 1 Verizon Wireless.

Questions posed by the FCC included whether AT&T plans to continue carrying the T-Mobile brand, and whether the combined company would offer T-Mobile’s price plans.

AT&T in its April 21 statement said the merger will create “thousands of jobs.” The FCC asked today for “all plans, analyses, and reports discussing the creation or loss of jobs.”

According to AT&T, “The merger will not literally create new spectrum but it will allow efficiencies in the use of spectrum that are the functional equivalent.

Now AT&T is talking up a plan to glue on T-Mobile’s AWS spectrum to their 700 MHz LTE network. AT&T said it plans to launch LTE this year, and will cover around 70 million people with LTE by year-end on their 700 MHz frequencies.

But a ganged AWS/700 MHz spectrum approach could be problematic. LTE on AWS (at 1.7/2.1GHz) has about one third the range as LTE on 700 Mhz.

In 2008, AT&T bid $ 6.6 billion to acquire an additional 227 B Block licenses during the FCC’s 700 MHz auction. In a number of places AT&T bought both the B and C block licenses in the Lower 700 MHz band, giving them double the bandwidth – 24 MHz total.

Later, AT&T acquired 700 MHz spectrum from Hiwire in a $ 2.5 billion deal and Qualcomm’s unpaired MediaFLO licences for $ 1.93 billion for 12MHz of the lower 700MHz D and E block.

AT&T also bought Paul Allen’s 700 MHZ Vulcan Spectrum licenses in Washington and Oregon that he acquired in 2003, for an undisclosed price. Vulcan Spectrum’s A- block licenses, which also cover the Seattle and Portland areas, weren’t included in the proposed sale to AT&T.

AT&T’s total investment in 700 MHz spectrum is therefore $ 6.6B (from the FCC’s 2008 auction) + $ 2.5B (Aloha Partners purchase) + $ 1.9B (Qualcomm purchase), or a total of $ 11 billion. Not including Paul Allen’s spectrum. AT&T (under Cingular brand), also bought $ 1.3 billion in AWS spectrum that they have never activated.

Bottom line: AT&T is sitting on more than $ 12 Billion in spectrum. At the same time, AT&T says they need to merge with T-Mobile to acquire spectrum and deliver LTE.

It doesn’t add up.

Back in Septempber 2010 we brought our readers an article on – AT&T Launching their LTE (4G) network in mid-2011. At that time AT&T’s operations CEO, John Stankey gave us this information. Now it’s May 2011, and AT&T has announced that it will be setting up LTE in five market. These include, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Atlanta and San Antonio.

Well AT&T, thats a good start. It’s nice to see this top mobile carrier give it’s customers something to look forward to. I would think they should really be trying to step up their game in the LTE markets. Just look at Verizon Wireless. May 19th announcements for 9 cities to receive LTE coverage. Then on May 23rd, another 21 cities announced. Big Red is on a roll, i’d say. So, after AT&T covers these 5 cities with LTE, and add 10+ more by the end of this year, customers may have good reason to rejoice.

Sometimes there are those phones overseas that are just so appealing, you may want to get them shipped over stateside. Thanks to overseas phone’s being based off the GSM technology (SIM cards) it makes them compatible with GSM carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile here in the US. Normally, you would have to make sure the phone in question is “unlocked” so that it will work with your carrier or go through the hassle of calling the original carrier or taking the device to a shop to be unlocked by a professional. Well, apparently the original Samsung Galaxy S line of phones made this process extremely easy by storing the unlock code inside the phone. This code could then be extracted thanks to a handy app found on XDA allowing you to use these imported phones on either AT&T or T-Mobile.

Well, it looks like Samsung hasn’t changed much and their overseas Galaxy S 2 handsets still provide that special unlock code hidden inside their phones, only to be extracted by a new free SIM unlocking app that can be found on the Android Market. Keep in mind your phone will have to be rooted before you can use the app but the benefits of having an unlocked Galaxy S 2 here in the states before anyone else could make it all worth it. Also, T-Mobile uses slightly different bands than the UK so although you can make calls and text, you may be stuck with only Edge data.

Now that you know how easy it is to unlock the Galaxy S 2, anyone tempted on getting one of these bad boys imported stateside for all your friends to drool over?

To put a nice, red bow on this wrapped up story about the Motorola ATRIX 4G and Motorola XOOM’s sales on AT&T and Verizon respectively, both carriers chimed in to say that they are pleased with customer reception and the sales of said devices.

Verizon said about the Motorola XOOM, ”We are pleased with customer response to the Xoom.” (Yes, I could pick that statement apart like a cherry tree, but I won’t.) Conversely, AT&T stated that their “customers are very satisfied with the Atrix, and [they] are equally as pleased with the results to date.”

Without seeing some hard numbers we can’t see just how pleasing these numbers really are, but we can’t argue with them. (And if they are as bad as folks have said they are then you better believe they won’t be releasing any sales figures any time soon.)

At least for the Motorola XOOM, one analyst cleverly pieced together information from Google and other research firms and came up with 100,000 – the number is .2% of 50,000,000 with the .2% being how many Android devices out and about are running Android 3.0.

It’s worthy to note that Verizon’s number for their 3G (and soon to be 4G)-enabled version could be significantly lower than that as the WiFi-only Motorola XOOM made its way into the market as early as March 25th – the data that firm Deutsche Bank based their study on was taken from a two week period ending April 1st.

Whatever the case is, Verizon’s happy, AT&T’s happy, so why can’t we all just be happy? [via Computer World]

AT&T has confirmed recent suspicions saying they’d be making it more expensive for people to upgrade early or for people to buy phones with just a one-year contract as opposed to two years.

You’ll have to pay $ 50 more than previous standard pricing for the latter situation, while those who don’t want to be tied down to a two-year contract and instead opt for one year will need to pay $ 150 more for their smartphones.

AT&T claims that the decision was made due to the sophistication of smartphones these days. As they get better, their costs go up. (Except they forget to mention that you’re already paying for the MSRP throughout the two-year or one-year deal anyway.) [via BGR]

If you were looking for an Inspire 4G or an Atrix 4G soon, AT&T’s brick and more and online shops may be the only places to find them. Wirefly, LetsTalk, and numerous other third party retailers have announced the disrupt in availability of AT&T products and services. As AT&T has not publicly announced anything and as other major retailers – such as Best Buy and Amazon – hasn’t put out any notices, we’re not sure to what extent this is happening. It’s unfortunate as these retailers often provide the best deals on devices soon after they launch, while the carriers usually reserve promotions for holiday sales or EOL preparation. [BGR]

The promise of an iPhone that no longer drops calls may be tempting many AT&T customers to switch over to Verizon. But is the grass really greener?

It depends. There are many indications the Verizon iPhone offers superior connectivity and far less dropped calls than its AT&T counterpart. However, other studies show that AT&T has faster downloads and is throwing free minutes at existing customers in an effort to keep them.

Deciding which way to go is not a clear-cut decision as there are many factors impacting each phone’s performance.

While Verizon has Skype and while T-Mobile and Sprint both have Qik, AT&T is the only carrier left out of the loop in regards to a major video-calling service provider. That may change according to PC World, who caught wind of a meeting between the two entities. Skype’s Rick Osterloh says to “…what out for some announcements there” in regards to a deal between them and AT&T. It isn’t concrete confirmation – and even Skype is declining to comment on what PC World alleged was said – but they never outright denied the story so I think we definitely will be on the lookout for some announcements in the (hopefully near) future.

Just as with the original Nexus One it looks like Google’s trying to get this thing out to more than one carrier. The Nexus S has recently passed certification at the FCC, it would appear. FCC only handles devices intended to be sold in the United States, but Canadians – who operate on the same wavelength as AT&T – can import anyway. Let’s hope Google can actually get the device on all four major carriers this time as they were unable to do with the original. [via WirelessGoodness, Thanks Teney!]

Although Samsung has become quite notorious with owners of Samsung Android devices for not sending out updates to their Android devices nearly as often as they should, a small ounce of hope was discovered. What you’re seeing in the picture above is a screenshot of the Samsung Captivate running Android 2.2, otherwise known as Froyo. This was found on the AT&T support page for the Samsung Captivate, in the section that describes how to find the Captivate’s firmware version and operating system.

With many other Android phones already running Froyo and Gingerbread already going public, it seems as though the Captivate would never get the Froyo update. But, this lucky find does shed a small ray of hope on the situation for Captivate users wanting Android 2.2. Hopefully this means that the Froyo update is on the way.

Last week AT&T gave us a 60-second rundown of the HTC Inspire 4G, and now the Motorola Atrix 4G is getting the same treatment. If you want the quick and slick story on the Atrix 4G, this is the video you want to watch. Even though the laptop dock’s $499.99 price tag (with or without the Atrix 4G) is a bit discouraging, the $199.99 price point for the phone alone is more than reasonable for a handset boasting a dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM. The above picture, captured by Android Central, confirms our suspicions: Much as with the Motorola Backflip and several of their other Android offerings, AT&T is not allowing the installing of non-market apps. As those of you with Android phones are probably aware, there is usually an option on the above screen that has the choice to “Allow installation of non-Market applications.” As you can see, this choice is not given on the HTC Inspire. Thankfully, there are other options available to those who are looking to sideload apps. We’re not surprised, but we’re sad to see that AT&T hasn’t reconsidered the limitations they’re putting on their users.

AT&T announced Wednesday that it will soon add Mobile WiFi tethering. The $20 feature will first be available February 13, with the HTC Inspire 4G. Smartphones can be bundled with the $25 AT&T 2 GB data plan, for a total of 4GB for $45 per month.

AT&T’s mobile tethering plan will be an option on the company’s upcoming HSPA+ 4G smartphones, such as the HTC Inspire 4G, Motorola Atrix 4G, and the Samsung Infuse 4G. “We are working on bringing it to the iPhone,” an AT&T spokesman said by e-mail. “But we have nothing else to share at this time.”

Currently AT&T charges $25 per month for 2 GB of metered data. The new $20 monthly tethering fee, however, does not eat out of the same 2 GB data cap each month. It adds an extra 2 GB of data, so, for $45 a month, you get a total of 4 GB of metered data plus the ability to tether.

Verizon’s tethering plan also costs $20 per month and includes a 2GB data. But each additional gigabyte of data, costs twice as much on Verizon — $20 per GB vrs $10 per GB under AT&T’s plan.

It’s still no bargain.

The chart (above) shows my Clear WiMAX usage last month. My $40/month mobile WiMAX plan has replaced my DSL service. It’s truly unlimited. No overages.

• On AT&T’s HSPA network, my 55 MB/month usage would cost; $25 for 2GB, then $20 for an additional 2 GB on the tethering plan. If I used 50GB over that 4GB, that’s $10 per GB or $500. My cost would be: $45 + $500 = $545/month.
• On Verizon’s (slow) EVDO Rev A tethered service, my 55 MB/month usage would cost; $30 data plan + $20 2GB tethering option ($50 total). If the overage were 50GB, that’s $20 per GB or $1,000. My cost would be: $50 + $1000 = $1050/mo.

Clearwire delivers 4G speeds (3-6 Mbps). The cellular operators only deliver 3G at 1/10th the speed (300-500 Kbps), and price it astronomically.

The actual bill of materials and manufacturing cost of today’s high end smartphone is less than $150. The average US smartphone consumer pays some $2400 for a two year smartphone service contract. But early termination fees often extend to 36 months. Verizon’s Average Revenue Per User is $105/month. ARPU is lower in Europe, and much lower in developing countries.

Here it is gang.  The guess work is over as of today.  AT&T will begin taking pre sales for the new Messiah phone, the Atrix 4G, on Feb 13th with the expected price tag of $199.99 on a 2 yr contract.  The device is touted to launch March 6th with the possibility of an earlier release date, per AT&T.  In addition, those looking to grab the laptop dock along with the Atrix can expect to tack on another $300.00 bones to the mix.  We heard you say “ouch”.  So, for a total of $499.99 the device and dock are yours.  Now, keep in mind that you’ll most likely require AT&T’s Data Pro plan and tethering add-on to go along with the hardware.  In addition, if you’re not too strapped at the end of the month with that hefty cellphone bill, AT&T is also offering an Entertainment Access Kit which includes the HD multi-media dock, bluetooth keyboard & mouse and a remote control for $189.99  Hit the break for more details, pics and the official press release.
