We told you recently that AT&T announced the HTC Inspire, but pricing and availability has not been specified. Well today, AT&T issues a pretty release filling out some of the details on what we can expect. The Inspire will feature 4G capability, and will go on sale Feb. 13 for $99.99 with a two-year contract. It will have a 4.3-inch touchscreen, 1 GHz processor, and an 8-megapixel camera. It ships with Froyo, and is a very capable phone for the price. This also marks AT&T’s first 4G-capable phone, and is likely the beginning of the big push for Android devices they announced a few days ago. Full press release below.

While users clamor in excitement for the upcoming Motorola Atrix 4G, it is easy to forget AT&T is launching a few other 4G devices this year, and an announcement has just gone out that the HTC Inspire 4G will be the first. The Inspire 4G will launch on February 13th at a quite the incredible price. Just $99.99 on a two-year contract. [That's the same price we saw leaked on Amazon last week, further lending credence to the $150 price point given for the Motorola Atrix 4G through the same channel.] The HTC Inspire 4G page over at AT&T is chock full of the details.
The timing of the release lines up as a perfect counterstrike for the launch of the iPhone 4 on Verizon’s network. AT&T has expressed it’s interest in beefing up their Android line now that exclusivity on Apple’s handset has run out. Don’t forget the Samsung Infuse 4G will also join the Inspire and Atrix in AT&T’s lineup. You can check out the full release below:

AT&T 4G Smartphone is the First of Many Planned for the Nation’s Fastest Mobile Broadband Network
DALLAS, Feb. 1, 2011 /PRNewswire/ –
Key facts
- AT&T* will begin selling the HTC Inspire™ 4G on Feb. 13.

4G Portfolio
AT&T is the leader in smartphones and expects to widen that lead in 2011. In January, AT&T committed to an industry-leading Android portfolio in the U.S. in 2011 and said it plans to offer two 4G smartphones in the first quarter. The HTC Inspire 4G is the first of more than 20 4G devices AT&T plans to deliver in 2011. AT&T has completed the deployment of HSPA+ to virtually 100 percent of its mobile broadband network, which enables 4G speeds when combined with Ethernet or fiber backhaul.
HTC Inspire™ 4G
The HTC Inspire™ 4G will be the first 4G smartphone in AT&T stores and will have the largest screen of any AT&T smartphone, with a 4.3-inch super LCD display, and will offer an 8-megapixel camera with HD video recording. Running on the Android 2.2 platform, the HTC Inspire 4G will be the first smartphone in the U.S. to feature the next-generation HTC Sense™ experience with cloud services. The HTC Inspire 4G will also be the first to introduce AT&T Mobile Hotspot service built into the smartphone, allowing users to connect additional Wi-Fi-enabled devices.
Exclusively available to AT&T customers for $99.99 after a two-year agreement, the HTC Inspire 4G will include a 1 GHz processor, Dolby® Mobile and SRS WOW HD sound, and a premium, aluminum unibody design. HTC Inspire 4G comes preloaded with a Blockbuster and eReader application to keep users entertained on the go. For more information, visit www.att.com/inspire4G.
With the next-generation of HTC Sense, the HTC Inspire 4G offers even more ways to stay connected, including FriendStream™, which delivers Facebook, Twitter and Flickr updates in a consolidated view. The HTC Inspire 4G also offers customers the ability to pinpoint the location of a lost phone on a map and send a command to make the phone sound an alert – even while on “silent” mode – through the htcsense.com website. If needed, owners can also remotely wipe all of the phone’s data with a single command in addition to forwarding calls and text messages to a different number.

Our Atrix 4G Forums are heating up in anticipation of a February 14th launch date, with many members eager to find sweet Android Love on Valentine’s Day. While the Atrix is awesome indeed, there will be plenty of other AT&T Androids to choose from in 2011, if the following internal document is accurate.

See those last two bullet points?
- 20 4G devices in 2011
- 12 Android devices in 2011
Yum. We’re also hearing that the Atrix 4G and Inspire 4G will both be available starting on February 14th and that employee training for the devices begins Wednesday, February 2nd.
Also notice the “Simultaneous” bullet point that suggest Verizon and Sprint can’t do simultaneous voice and data. For the most part, they’re correct, but we’ve uncovered internal documents showing Verizon WILL be offering simultaneous voice and data although they’re not yet confident enough to push it as a selling point.
Right now AT&T is selling 7 Android Phones:
With 12 Androids in 2011, AT&T will be more than doubling their lineup. That being said, we’ll probably see some of these reach end-of-life when newer versions are stocked, but still- sounds like AT&T will have a strong Android showing in the coming year. This is great news for AT&T customers and Android enthusiasts.
[Thanks Anonymous Tipster!]

Is the Google Nexus S heading to AT&T? The Nexus S is available now through T-Mobile, but it looks like the other major American GSM carrier will be getting its own Nexus S as well. Above is a screenshot showing different Nexus S model numbers going through the FCC.
Sources at PocketNow are confirming this:
So far three Nexus S versions have gone through the FCC: the original GT-i9020, followed by the GT-i9020T and GT-i9023. But thanks to the Bluetooth SIG, we now know that a fourth variant exists which hasn’t appeared in any other databases, including the FCC: GT-i9020A. According to the descriptions of these models on the Bluetooth certificates, all are destined for North America except i9023, which is supposedly bound for Europe.
While the release of the Nexus S on AT&T is a good thing, the flagship Android device will be competing with pretty hot Android devices on the carrier, namely the dual-core Atrix 4G, which also has a laptop dock being released with it.
The addition of the Nexus S would be good for business, as AT&T is losing exclusivity of the Apple iPhone; Verizon Wireless is gearing up to release the iPhone 4 on its CDMA network in February.

Just in case you thought Research In Motion was only giving the love to Sprint when it came to cellular enabled PlayBooks, new rumors have now popped up suggesting that an GSM version compatible with AT&T and Rogers 3G bands is tracking very nicely as well. Also suggested is that shortly after the release of the 3G enabled version will come a Verizon LTE enabled version. Research In Motion has announced a Q1, 2011 timeframe for the WiFi enabled version with the Sprint 4G version arriving in the summer but has been quiet when referring to other carrier announcements.
If all these new rumors pan out, that means we should see the WiFi version ordering start in February, shipping in March with the 3G version showing up late March or April. No mention of ship dates for LTE, only that it would come after the 3G release. Only fair to note however, these are still rumors. Nothing has been confirmed but time will tell. While we wait, check out our BlackBerry PlayBook review.

AT&T is finally putting some of its older BlackBerry smartphones on the end of life list. No surprises here when it comes to the devices put on the list but one entry does bring a sadness to my heart. Yes, the BlackBerry Bold 9000 is listed and will no longer be offered once any remaining stock is sold through. As we’ve mentioned many times, the BlackBerry Bold 9000 is still the caddy of BlackBerry devices. If there was one refresh that looked the same but had better specs that we’d like to see, the BlackBerry Bold 9000 would be at the top of the list. Remember when Kevin unboxed it? Good times.

It looks like two rather lackluster Android handsets are meeting their demise on AT&T in the coming months. The Motorols Backflip will reach end-of-life on February 2nd, while the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 will do the same come March 6th. Both phones fell short of anything spectacular, so it is questionable how much they will really be missed once AT&T stops pedaling the handsets in their retail outlets.
In the meantime, the carrier suggests the Motorola FLIPOUT and Samsung Captivate as the perfect substitutes, but we’re more excited about the bigger and better things being shown off here at CES. If the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc makes it to the US, you better bet it will be on AT&T.

AT&T is making several announcements today about their “4G” devices and network expansion. AT&T says it is the only U.S. company committed to delivering 4G using both HSPA+ and LTE technologies – providing a faster and more consistent experience for customers.
AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega said Wednesday that it will step up its Long-Term Evolution investment and roll out 4G services in the middle of the year. Meanwhile, AT&T diversified its smartphone lineup and touted new 4G Android devices from Motorola, HTC and Samsung. AT&T says it will launch 20, 4G devices this year with a dozen Android devices on tap in 2011.
Motorola Mobility showed off the Atrix 4G (right). CEO Sanjay Jha called it “the world’s most powerful smartphone.” The dual-core Atrix uses a Tegra processor, Android 2.2, and has a dock that allows for desktop Web browsing.
- HTC CEO Peter Chou also showed off the Inspire 4G, which has the next generation Sense exclusive to AT&T. The Inspire features HTML5 support, a 4.3 inch display and Android 2.2.
- Samsung Mobile Communications, said its Infuse 4G would offer the largest and thinnest screen.
AT&T’s Chief Marketing Officer David Christopher said it will offer a Motorola’s Honeycomb Android tablet in the second quarter running off its current network. LTE tablets will follow in the summer.
AT&T devices will use both their HSPA+ and LTE network. Their LTE transition will go through 2013, but won’t begin until after the first half of the year.
AT&T CTO John Donavan said combining HSPA+ and LTE results in better hand-offs between services.
Meanwhile, Sprint Nextel, introduced two WiMAX devices –– the HTC EVO Shift 4G with a Qualcomm MSM7630 (800 MHz) processor, and the MiFi 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot by Novatel Wireless that are far cheaper than the devices being sold by its rivals.
The EVO Shift, which sports a slide-out QWERTY keypad, for $149.99 and Mobile Hotspot for $49.99. While the smartphone is set to be launched on Jan. 9, the Hotspot may hit the store shelves on Feb. 27.

AT&T is expanding Wi-Fi access for its subscribers in New York and introducing it in San Francisco, notes the Associated Press
AT&T will expand Wi-Fi hot spots in New York’s Times Square just ahead of New Year’s celebrations and is also deploying its first hot spots in a public, outdoor area of San Francisco, the Embarcadero waterfront district.
AT&T operates hot spots in hotels, airports, Starbucks coffee shops and other indoor locations. The new “hot zones,” as AT&T calls them, cover public, outdoor spaces and provide fast data service for AT&T subscribers. They also divert traffic from the company’s cellular network, that can sometimes be overloaded due largely to traffic generated by the popular iPhone.
AT&T set up a hot zone in Times Square in May, and later in downtown Charlotte, N.C., and Chicago’s Wrigleyville neighborhood.Chief Technology Officer John Donovan said the company plans further Wi-Fi expansions, including in sports stadiums. AT&T’s smart-phone and landline broadband subscriber can use the zones for free. Usage doesn’t count toward monthly data limits.
According to AT&T , 106.9 million Wi-Fi connections were made in the last quarter across more than 23,000 AT&T hotspots throughout the U.S.

Dell’s 7-inch Android tablet, the Streak 7, appears to be headed to T-Mobile once it’s finally unveiled. A recent FCC filing shows the device listed with a M02M model number with support for a 3G modem that works for both AT&T and T-Mobile bands. Other details include support for WiFi (802.11n), Bluetooth and an SD card slot. It’s not known whether this will carry the Streak name or if perhaps it will go by the Looking Glass title we’ve previously heard associated with the 7-inch tablet.
Recently, CellPhone Signal came across photos of the device showing it with T-Mobile branding. We can’t imagine it ending up as an exclusive device to the carrier, but we know AT&T doesn’t appear to be in any hurry when it comes to Android. The images do show both front and back cameras although we don’t know what resolution either will offer.
Rumor has it the 7-inch tablet will run a Tegra 2 processor when it’s announced, likely at next week’s CES. As to what version of Android is under the hood is anyone’s guess. Assuming Android 2.2 is what Dell loads, it’s still an uphill battle to fight when others are expecting to unveil Honeycomb tablets.

I’m sure that, by now, most of you have heard about the new Android Market, and all the changes it brings to the table. Changes like skimming down the window for a refund on an app from 24 hours to 15 minutes. Now, Google has started sending an email to developers, making the change official. It’s all pretty standard stuff beyond the refund window, but let’s not forget about AT&T customers now being able to bill apps to their phone bill.

One of the biggest complaints about the Android Market up to this point has been the lack of ways to pay for apps. Now, however, it looks like AT&T users will be happy to know that they can now bill the price of any downloaded app to their carrier bill. No longer will those on AT&T be forced to pay for an app right away. When they go to check out, under the payment method dropdown box, they should see an option that says “Bill my AT&T account”, which will then simply tack on the amount onto their bill at the end of their cycle. No word on how, if at all, this will affect the new 15 minute refund window, but I suppose only time will tell. Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Good news, AT&T customers! You’ve just joined T-Mobile in the “bill my carrier account” club for your Market purchases. Hopefully this will alleviate some of the hangups customers have with attaching a credit card to any sort of account.
Naturally this could very well be a double edged sword. I’m talking to you awesome parents out there who gave your kids an Android device, of course. I’ve never been involved with AT&T so I’m not sure what kind of protection AT&T offers to block these sorts of transaction. Erring on the side of caution, it may be best for you parents, or whomever, to take any necessary precautions to prevent a heart attack when you open your next bill. Be it calling AT&T to prevent any potential charges, or prepping a switch and hanging it over the mantle in a stern warning to anyone on your family plan.
Android Developers Blog says they have been rolling out this change along side the general market update over the past several days. Any of you AT&T Phandroidians have an experience on the topic to share? Good or bad.

Being able to charge an Android application to your phone bill is nothing new for T-Mobile customers. We have been able to do that for a quite sometime. Other carriers have been looking into doing the same thing , but have not successfully integrated an option for it yet. Customers will soon be able to enjoy the added benefits of phone bill charging, thanks to Google and AT&T. No word on when the update will officially hit your device but I bet it won’t be very long from now.

My only real concern, which was my concern when T-Mobile did it too, is what measures will be put into place to stop an unruly teen from racking up large charges for applications? Does AT&T have an option to prevent that from happening? Let me know if there is, I am really afraid for parents when things like this happen.
Either way this is a win for you AT&T customers out there.

I love Twitter. Companies are leveraging it to make some of the best announcements these days. The latest? Sony shared that they’re partnering with AT&T to bring a buy-one-get-one deal on the Xperia X10. Between now and January 1st, all customers who buy the X10 on AT&T can get a second one free. So if you’re in the market, go fast! Take advantage of this for the holidays.
For those who need a reminder, the Xperia X10 comes with the following specs:
Android 1.6, but upgradeable to 2.1
1GHz Snapdragon CPU
1GB internal storage
4-inch touchscreen
32GB External storage supported
8MP Camera
All in all, it’s a very solid phone, and with the BOGO deal, if you’re in the market for two new AT&T phones, head on down before Jan 1.

Well, the people have spoken, at least according to one poll by Consumer Reports about consumer satisfaction with mobile carriers. AT&T is now ranked dead last with customers, followed by T-Mobile, then Sprint, then Verizon, and topped off by U.S. Cellular.
A lot of the flack AT&T is receiving is coming from iPhone customers, who were “much less satisfied” with the service when compared to other smartphone owners on the same network. Perhaps those T-Mobile ads about AT&T’s service aren’t so slanderous after all?

Consumer Reports is out with its latest survey of cell phone service by its members, and AT&T is now ranked as the worst in the country.
According to the Houston Cronicle, AT&T scored a “Worse” rating – the dreaded full-black dot – in every survey category except for texting, in which it gets a half-black dot.
In response to the Consumer Reports survey, an AT&T spokesperson e-mailed the following statement:
We take this seriously and we continually look for new ways to improve the customer experience. The fact is wireless customers have choices and a record number of them chose AT&T in the third quarter, significantly more than our competitors. Hard data from independent drive tests confirms AT&T has the nation’s fastest mobile broadband network with our nearest competitor 20 percent slower on average nationwide and our largest competitor 60 percent slower on average nationwide.
AT&T scored the worst in the Consumer Reports’ reader score, as well as in value, voice, and data. It tied T-Mobile for its texting performance.

Now that the Nexus S has formally been announced, we are being flooded with information about specs, features, early reviews, and so on. One concern that has been raised is that the Nexus S will only be able to run on AT&T’s 2G (EDGE) network. According to a tweet by @tnkgrl, the Nexus S will be 2G only on AT&T, and that the tri-band 3G is 2100/900 for Europe and AWS 1700 for T-Mobile in the US.
John Gruber from DaringFireball.net has also picked up on this, so take it for what it’s worth. We’re going to do a bit more digging around, so stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.

Brighthand is reporting that a senior Acer official noted that the Acer Liquid Metal might be heading to the United States sometime soon at the company’s Q&A session following their press announcement last week (where we were treated to two new Android tablets and a new Android handset.) Rogers is said to be getting the device in Canada sometime soon, and in the same breath Aymar de Lencquesaing – president of Acer’s smartphone unit – mentioned that AT&T and T-Mobile would be likely candidates for release in the United States due to their GSM networks. The phone is already out in parts of Europe – the most notable being France – but we assume Acer doesn’t want to miss the “affordable smartphone” boat currently setting sail and – as such – won’t let their new high-end offerings completely overshadow the cheaper ones. We’ll be on the lookout for any confirmation regarding United States availability.

While I was never a Pearl user in the past, something about the Pearl 3G intrigued me since we first saw it pop on the radar back at WES 2009. Many users got their start with a Pearl and either stuck with it or moved on to a full QWERTY device. I never had the pleasure of rocking one myself so I’ve been a bit anxious to get my hands on a Pearl 3G and put it through my day. While I claimed on our WES bloggers reactions video that purple was the way to go, I really am impartial for the most part when it comes to color. My AT&T Pearl 3G is the sweet faded red and that’s fine by me. Keep reading for my thoughts on the BlackBerry Pearl 3G from AT&T.
