I read that Nokia was slapping those loyal clients who have went out and bought the N8 and other Symbian^three devices early in the face by shipping new N8 and C7 devices with Anna preloaded. Without having question, they need to have very first provided the update to existing owners and this whole Anna update story is disappointing to me. I also read that Anna for the N8 was leaked and offered so I decided to risk it rather than wait for Nokia considering that my N8 was just sitting around useless anyways and now I have Anna on my N8 performing well so far.
This will void your warranty, risk bricking your device, etc. so I do not suggest any readers take these actions and just wait for Nokia to officially release it. That said, my wife’s blue Nokia N8 consistently locks up and is a piece of crap so I am going to update hers making use of these actions following I test it out on my orange 1 for a few much more days. So far everything seems to be working just fine. There were a couple of Chinese apps on the N8 that I just uninstalled and so far so good. These actions are not too bad truly and didn’t call for any DOS commands or anything like goofing around with my N900 did.
Any readers attempt this update and if so, how did it go for you?
UPDATE: Here is a page describing a new ROM version with the split screen/context sensitive keyboard and other improvements. I am going to put this 1 on my N8 now.

It will be just about a year after the release of the Nokia N8 when we will be getting the update that was talked about during the release. According to a post on Nokia Conversations, Anna will ship on new N8, C7, and C6-01s that are bought starting in July while the E6 and X7 already have it loaded. As you know, my Nokia Astound also has Anna and I love it! I also have my own Nokia E6 coming this week that has Anna preloaded so by the time it comes to existing devices I may no longer even have those devices.
Speaking of existing devices, I had to pass my orange Nokia N8 on to my wife since her blue one is a lemon and hangs and shuts down on her all the time. You do not want a wife with a goofy phone that you recommended and since I prefer the E7 to the N8 myself I have no problem passing it along to her.
Hopefully, Nokia can keep this August date at least since I told my wife when we bought her blue N8 back in February that Swype in portrait would be coming very soon and these update delays are killing my reputation.

It seems that Android is continuing to increase their market share, at least according to numbers for Mobile Web Consumption for the month of August. As seen in the graph posted above, Android continues to rise, while iOS and RIM both continue to fall.
The numbers also look good in the chart posted below, which measures changes for the month, quarter, and the entire year. Now granted, these statistics are pulled from Mobile Web usage, not from actual vendor numbers, which will give a much better idea of how Android is continuing to fair in the Mobile OS market. Quantcast will have those figures next week, so stay tuned.

According to a leaked screen shot from Verizon, the update was available for manual download as early as August 20th, but will begin to roll out OTA starting August 24th, and go through August 27th. The update is supposed to bring some of the following minor enhancements:

Do you live in the LA area or do you happen to be passing through this weekend? If so, then make sure to sign up for and attend the Nokia E73 Beach Party put on by Nokia. I’ll be heading out camping here in Washington State with my family, but thinking about you all on the beach
Nokia puts on some good parties and there will be food and drinks provided, along with lots of fun. They will actually be loaning out E73 Mode evaluation units so if you are interested in checking one out make sure to swing on by.
Speaking of the Nokia E73 Mode, make sure to check out our Starter Guide that collates my posts on the device and links to the full review and my extensive keyboard shortcut post. As you know, the E73 Mode is my daily driver that should stay that way until the N8 appears.

Posted on 19 August 2010. Tags: August, Cricket’s, Kyocera, Sanyo, Shipping

A couple weeks back we reported on two Android phones by Cricket that were reviewed by Sascha Segan from PC MAG. Cricket has announced the pricing and availability of their new Android phone, Sanyo ZIO by Kyocera. Cricket is known for low-cost phones and this new device just adds to that list. The new Sanyo ZIO is available for only $249.99 without a contract.
By no means is this phone as capable as other recent smartphone releases, but is definitely worth a look due to its low-cost and the fact that it comes with Android OS. It comes with a 3.5-inch WVGA display, a 600 MHZ Qualcomm processor, a 3.2-megapixel camera, and Android 1.6 with plans to upgrade it to 2.1 or higher later on.
Having a 3.2 megapixel camera isn’t really something to flaunt. However, it is a tad better than that of the iPhone 3GS. With its low-cost price, Android OS, and not-so-bad specs, how could you not be attracted to it?

For those eager to get their hands on the Blackberry-esque Motorola Charm on T-Mobile, a tweet sent out by T-Mobile USA has made it known that your day is August 25th. The tweet didn’t get specific about a price, though it does generalize it as “affordable.” How affordable? Well we have seen various reports showing pricing that seems to vary from below $100 for the Charm all the way up to $189, and this pricing seems to vary by region. The same reports also mention a very cheap (about $15) smartphone plan to go along with the handset. Where the price ends up sitting and what sort of plans will be available only time will tell.

Now that Verizon’s first handset to ship with Android 2.2 is out on shelves and the original Motorola Droid has resumed its update to Froyo, sights are set back on the HTC Droid Incredible, a handset that some of its owners believe is oft neglected in Big Red’s Android lineup. According to sources within Verizon, the Froyo update has been available for testing internally and is just about ready to start rolling out. Verizon purportedly has set a date of August 18th for the OTA to begin making its way to handsets.
And why not? August 18th has been pegged as the day for Flash 10.1 to reach a full release to Android phones running Froyo and is also a date Verizon has already indicated should mark the end of the OTA rollout for the original Droid. It is assumed on that day Verizon will most likely begin rolling out a second update to Moto Droid owners that will enable Flash on their devices.
Given other Sense-enabled devices have like the HTC EVO 4G been receiving their dose of Android 2.2, the 18th seems like a highly likely date for the Incredible to receive a serving of sweet sweet Froyo. As with all OTA updates we’ll believe it when we see it, but we may just hold out hope on this one.

Froyo has been the subject of conversations lately and since the HTC Evo users have received their update, HTC Droid Incredible users are checking their devices daily in hopes to receive their frozen treat. HTC has the update ready, it’s now on the carriers to fulfill their duties to provide the update to their devices. The Motorola Droid started receiving their upgrades recently and is scheduled to receive flash support on August 18th. The Motorola Droid 2 which was launched yesterday, are shipping with Android 2.2 and the only Droid devices left to receive Froyo are the HTC Droid Incredible and the Motorola Droid X. The talks with sources suggest that the HTC Droid Incredible users will receive their update the same day the Motorola Droid is expected to receive flash support on August 18th. We’ll just have to wait and see, but it only makes sense.

I know I wrote about hesitations of getting a Nokia N8 here before, but forget all about that since I will be getting one for sure. I want to get an orange one, but would buy a blue or green one too so it just depends on what becomes available and where. I just read over on The Handheld Blog that they had a chance to unbox a Nokia N8 retail package at an event in India. It looks like Nokia is using that great slim, low profile packaging that we saw with the N900 and other recent devices. I also like seeing the HDMI converter and USB-to-go cable so that people can get up and running right out of the box.
There are rumors of 26 August UK release date and if that is the case I may be able to buy one in the UK when I go back to Nokia World in mid-September. I just purchased my flight tickets late last week and am taking my wife and oldest daughter along too. I imagine that we will see more hardware announcements at Nokia World given that the N8 should be launching before Q3 ends and I am hoping I can cover the event with the assistance of a Nokia N8 too.

Google must have something up their sleeve as invites for Google’s Mobile event are being sent out. The event is to take place Thursday, August 12th, and other than “unveiling a couple of cool new mobile features,” the details do not go any further than that. The possibilities seem endless with what the folks at Google are capable of, so I think this is where you can let your imagination run wild in hopes of guessing the outcome of this event. In the comments below, tell us what you think is going to be announced. Remember, this is a Google Mobile event, so let’s try and keep our ideas on the mobile platform.

What else could Verizon cram onto August 12th? The space on the calendar is filling up with the launch of the Droid 2 and a Droid training day for customers, but if recent rumors are to be believed this could also be the date that the Froyo update for the Motorola Droid picks back up after it was supposedly halted in favor of a newer build version. There is no specific reason known yet for why the update may have been switched to the later version, some speculation is that one of the bugs to be fixed is AAC+ playback support with Pandora, which many Froyo users have experienced trouble with.
Actually, no one is really sure if the update was ever halted, but evidence definitely lends us to believe that the new build FRG22 is indeed replacing the first one pushed — version FRG01B. Will the 12th be the date the update resumes? I guess we’ll know in a few short days.

If you preorder after that, it’ll be $209, and after the 23rd it’ll cost $219. The tablet doesn’t have much to show for its specs beneath the hood, but here’s a rundown of what to expect:
- Processor :ARM A8 Cortex processor (TI OMAP3 3530) 600mHz
- RAM : 256MB DDR
- Internal memory: 2GB
- Expansion memory : microSDHC up to 16 GB
- WIFI connectivity – web, facebook, etc etc
- Operating System : Android 2.2
- Access to Android market place for app downloads
- Supported Languages: English, Chinese, others
- Display : 800×480 7″ LCD
- Input : Resistive touchscreen (this is not multitouch screen)
- Audio output : 3.5 mm jack, integrated speakers

Nationite wants to highlight their tablet’s out-of-the-box ability to flash custom ROMs and hack the device to your heart’s content. We hear that’s a pretty nice processor for overclocking, but that would depend on any developers willing to shell out the dough for this one. Head on over to Nationite’s site now for more information. [Thanks, Raz!]
