Motorola Droid 3 Now Available from Verizon?

This image has no alt text

Droid 3 is now available from Verizon wireless. Well, sorta. Jumping onto Verizon’s “Droid Does” page will give you this flashy flash page showing off all of the features and specs of Motorola’s latest qwerty offering. Only problem, clicking on the “Buy Now” button will take you to a page displaying “The selection you made is unavailable at this time.” So what gives?

Well, I’ve been hearing reports from a few lucky people who got in touch with Verizon telesales by dialing 611 on their handsets and were actually able to purchase the device. If the service rep is having a hard time locating the device in their system give them a hand with the part number “Droid 3 MOTXT862.” Might speed things up a bit.

Rumor has it the device wasn’t going to be released until July 14th but it looks like you might be able to snag it now? This phone is looking absolutely beastly. Good luck and let us know if you were able to purchase!

Wireless Charging Battery Cover Now Available for the HTC Thunderbolt at Verizon

This image has no alt text

If you’re one of those types that likes to wow your friends with your high tech gear or if you feel the need to upgrade your life with the “convenience” of wireless charging, the official HTC wireless charging battery cover is now available for Thunderbolt users. At only $ 30 it may seem reasonably priced but once you factor in the necessary Wireless Charging Pad for $ 70 (that has been in Verizon stores since April), you may start thinking twice about that purchase.

Call me a fuddy duddy but I’ll save the $ 100, buy 4 generic batteries from China ($ 8) and stick to some good ol’ fashioned wired charging for now. That is, until my rap career takes off and I can afford “tech bling” like this.

MyTouch 3G Slide FroYo Available

The successor to the MyTouch 3G, the Slide, has finally gotten an official taste of soft serve. The only catch is that it isn’t an OTA and users will need to make the effort to install it manually; though HTC has provided all of the neccesarry tools on their website.

Is this a welcome addition, or too little too late for a device that is closing in on its first birthday?

    • Improved support for <merge> layouts, as well as layouts with gesture overlays.

  • Tools for using the Renderscript graphics engine: the SDK tools now compiles .rs files into Java Programming Language files and native bytecode.

Flash Will be Available on Honeycomb Tablets “Within a Few Weeks” of Xoom’s Launch

We reported to you yesterday that the Motorola Xoom wouldn’t have Flash capability at launch, and the disclaimer only said “Expected this Spring.” But earlier today via their blog Adobe publicly stated that they are working quickly to optimize Flash for the tablet experience and that they expect to release an OTA update “within a few weeks” of the first Honeycomb tablet (the Xoom) hitting the market. So those of you who were on the fence about your Xoom purchase, don’t let the lack of flash sway you away from it. It’ll just be a short wait.

Xoom Available for Pre-Order, but Doesn’t Have Flash Yet

The Motorola Xoom is pretty much the hottest tablet we’ve seen yet. We’re eager to see it hit the market, which is expected to be in just a few days. If reports are to be believed, it’ll be on sale on the 24th, and is open for pre-order right now. One caveat, though: According the most recent flier from Verizon, Flash won’t be available on the tablet until this Spring. We’re not sure if it’s because they’re still working out kinks, or if Adobe hasn’t perfected the balance of Tegra-2 and Honeycomb, but either way…don’t rush out and pick one up on day 1 expecting to be surfing all your favorite flash websites as soon as you get it home. There’ll be a short wait for that. It’s still very capable (iPad doesn’t have flash either, and never ever will), but the disclaimer is well deserved.

Twidroyd Reinstated, New Version Available

If you’ve been jonesing for some Twidroyd since Twitter suspended it on Friday, your wait is over.

Earlier today, Twitter announced that the popular Android app has had its API access restored, now that parent company UberMedia has taken steps “to remedy the violations.” Shortly after, the Twidroyd team announced that updated versions have been released.

TwitLonger support is gone in the new version; not surprising, since one of Twitter’s complaints was that DMs longer than 140 characters were being handled in a way that might compromise privacy.

What do you think, was Twitter heavy-handed in handling this situation, or were they justified in the way they enforced their policies?

Slacker Radio now available for Symbian devices in the Ovi Store

Slacker Radio now available for Symbian devices in the Ovi StoreLast month at CES Slacker Radio announced it was coming soon to Symbian devices. I just read a Tweet from the NokiaUS account and saw that Slacker Radio is now available in the Ovi Store. I popped my SIM back into my Nokia N8 and downloaded it immediately. Keep in mind, the initial download to get the software is 1.3 MB so make sure you have a solid connection or are connected via WiFi before downloading.

Keep in mind, Slacker is a service with support for those in the US and Canada so this service is only available for these two countries. I understand many other countries have Spotify so it looks like we finally get a client/service in the US before others :)

I have been using Slacker Radio on my Android, iOS, and Windows Phone 7 devices for over a year as my primary streaming music client and find it works very well at providing just the right mix for me. I actually have a Slacker sticker on my MacBook Pro since I love the service. The great thing is that favorite stations are synced to your account so you can pick up a different smartphone and listen to your favorites on any device. I like how the client on other platforms lets you cache music for offline listening so you can load up tunes for your next flight and then stream again when you land. This offline caching feature is not yet in this new Symbian client, but we may see it in the future.

This news for Slacker Radio is timed particularly well since Last.fm is going to start charging a monthly fee to stream music.

As stated on the Ovi Store description:

Listen to free personalized radio on your Nokia phone. The award-winning Slacker Radio application gives you access to the entire Slacker music library featuring millions of songs from thousands of artists. Listen to over 130 expert programmed radio stations or create your own custom stations. Learn more about the music you hear by reading the artist bios and album reviews. Slacker Personal Radio is the best way to discover new artists and hear your favorite songs.

Basic or Radio Plus?

The free account you setup with after downloading Slacker Radio gives you full access to Slacker Radio music, but you are limited to 6 song skips per hour, per station, there are some ads, and you get no lyrics. You can upgrade to Radio Plus and pay $3.99/month to have ad free listening, unlimited song skips, complete lyrics, and ABC News Radio. On my N8 this can actually be billed through T-Mobile.  I like the service so pay for the Radio Plus upgrade.

UPDATE: OK, I am using it up here in Alaska and when connected via EDGE the music streams flawlessly. However, if I switch to the task manager or another app the music pauses for 1/2 second and then starts back up again. This is going to be real annoying if I am trying to multi-task with Slacker Radio playing. Hopefully this is something they can fix easily enough and soon.

Also, don’t forget my tip that you can Zune Pass music on your N8 and get a taste of what kind of services a Nokia Windows Phone 7 device will provide.

Samsung Releases Hostage Finally! Vibrant Source Code Now Available

I’m sure most of you remember our initial post on this subject. Finally Vibrant owners have an “official” source to build from. While Im sure this is too little too late, as far as saving Samsung’s reputation, it’s a step in the right direction.

Alright, alright stop the excitement for a second, to download the source codes you’ll need to visit Samsung’s Open-Source Site and do a search for “Sgh-T959″. Now that that’s over with, let the celebrating commence, and please allow me to join you in celebration: *fist pump* “YES!”

Nokia N8 PR 1.1 now available in the U.S.

Nokia N8 PR 1.1 now available in the U.S.Last week I wrote about the PR 1.1 update for the Nokia N8 and I was disappointed that we didn’t have it in the US. Well folks, you can now check your N8 and you should find it available. The update is just about 6.9 MB and I just finished downloading it on my orange N8. One week after it started to roll out really is not that bad, especially when we look at the history of updates for North American Nokia devices.

The way I checked was to simply go to phone dialer and enter *#0000#. Then tap on the left soft key and check for updates. After downloading you then choose to install now or later. After choosing now your phone will shutdown and then a white display with an updating status bar will appear.

Twitter 2.0 Brings UI Change And Rids The Menu Page, Now Available For Download In The Market.

Twitter has gotten itself a little update recently.  The update brings you a noticeable UI tweak of sorts along with several other gladly welcomed functionality.  For starters, the icon logo has been replaced from the teal “T” to a teal bird icon in order to better suit the application.  The second thing you’ll notice is the absence of the menu screen.  Twitter has done away with it, launching you directly into your timeline after tapping the app’s icon.   The next thing you’ll notice is that the UI has been completely revamped.  Scrolling my timeline was much faster and smoother than before, lacking any choppiness or lag.  Other noticeable points include a new search system with the ability to search the contacts in your device’s address book.  In addition, you can also view tweets and trends without actually having to sign into your account.  Not too shabby if you ask me.  I’m relieved at how Twitter has moved away from the cute fuzziness of the previous version to the newer streamlined and functional interface.  If you’re ready to make the change, then head on over to our apps database or check it out on the Android Market and give it a go.  And don’t forget to let us know what you think about it in the comments below.

Honeycomb Available Now In Flashable Zip For Your Nook Color

People who purchased $400 plus tablets continue to bite their tongues over those who purchased Nook Colors and are having a grand o’l time modifying the heck out of them.  We’ve seen the Nook Color do some incredible things over the past couple of months thanks to some enthusiasts over at XDA.  Well, why should the news stop there?  In recent Nook Color glory, XDA member samuelhalff has expounded on deeper-blue’s work and pieced together a flashable zip file of the Honeycomb 3.0 port.

According to user feedback the build is pretty solid, though the developer does warn of some bugs, so be aware that you are attempting this at your own risk.  Other than that, if you’re ready to give it a go, then head on over to the XDA developers thread and check it out for yourself.  Don’t forget to stop back over at Talk Android if you have this baby up and running on your Nook Color and leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Nook Color – Flashable HoneyComb v04 Zip Available

Getting Honeycomb on your Nook Color just got easier. We posted before about the beta release of Honeycomb for your Nook Color by deeper-blue on xda-developers. Well now it’s flashable via ClockworkMod Recovery thanks to samuelhalff, and ready to sweeten your e-reader. Based off of deeper-blue’s impressive work starting the Honeycomb development for the Nook Color, running an overclocked kernel by dalingrin, Gapps included via jleecong’s files, and root (su) thanks to chhaggerty and Nuroslam.

This rom still has a few bugs, but is running well. You can download the zip file here. For release information how-tos and additional mirrors please visit the original thread at xda-developers. While we support developement as much as any avid Android user we also support these words from samuelhalff:

All usual disclaimers apply. Please do not try this if not absolutely sure of what you are doing. Cicada’s Froyo on eMMC is a far better option for people looking for stability. I must urge you to consider that deeperblue’s HC for Nook Color is under constant upgrade. This means HC v5 could be available very soon.. Maybe you should wait until a more stable version of HC is available. Though deeperblue has done a great job at resolving issues.

Hope this satisfies you Nook Color owner’s sweet tooth, beware of cavities.
