I just read over on All About Symbian that a minor firmware update is available now for the Nokia N8. Unfortunately, this is NOT the one we have all been waiting for with the new web browser and portrait QWERTY keyboard support, but it does look to improve some aspects of the device.
The changelog, as posted by All About Symbian, includes:
- Web updated to 7.2.8.10
- Quickoffice updated to 6.4.166, editing functions now enabled on the N8 (i.e. don’t have to pay to upgrade), improved zooming functions
- Adobe Reader updated to 2.5.653
- Big update to Nokia Email; performance improved; ‘unread emails’ flag added to homescreen widget; meeting requests can be accepted directly from email invitations; maps integration, which means people can view the meeting location on the map when the address is mentioned in the location field in the invite
- General performance improvements
- Dialer now works in landscape mode
- Previous performance updates are rolled in and, in the full (Ovi Suite-installed, >100MB) image, there’s the facility to provide a better working starting point than hard resetting a PR 1.0 device
One fix that is actually quite important for me is the ability to now respond to meeting requests in email. This limitation actually kept me from using my N8 at times since I need to be able to respond to these for work.
I plan to perform the update this morning, but REALLY want to see the 2.0 update with the improved browser and QWERTY keyboard support. I am not seeing it available yet, but will keep trying. Make sure to access the Device Manage by entering *#0000# in the dialer to check for the update. You can also go to /Settings/Phone/Phone management/Device updates to check for the update. This update WILL NOT be found in Software Updates, which is where I went first too

We’ve been expecting to see the HTC Thunderbolt available soon, and Best Buy’s circular ad is teasing of the $50 pre-order, starting today. DISCLAIMER: I went through the online ads, and didn’t find it myself, but these ads are still tied to locations. Android Central found it this morning, though, and said that for $50 you can now pre-order the HTC Thunderbolt. Check the online ads yourself, or contact your local Best Buy for more information, and let us know in the comments if you get your name on one!

Nothing gets the developer community hopping more than the system dump of a new, high-profile phone. Well, fans of the HTC Inspire 4G will be happy to know that its system dump has just been made available. The new version of HTC Sense is included in this, and the report is that there’s not a lot of the AT&T “bloatware” that is so common with so many phones. Developers, or anyone planning to purchase an Inspire and do any hacking, should really look into grabbing this download from Android Central.

Samsung announced that they have released their TV remote app for both the Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab devices. The remote sports pretty much all of the functionality you would see on a standard remote, only with a sleek and sharp looking UI. As of now, the application is not available for any other device, hence the reason it will not appear for you if you search for it in the market. In addition, we are told that there will not be an apk around the interwebs for you to sniff out. Who knows, maybe our boys over at XDA can take care of that. Read More…

Ah, the good old Blogger has now released its own application to the Android market. I am surprised Google has waited this long to release the app, however sooner is better than never I suppose. Check out some of the key features below.
- Multiple accounts and blogs: You can easily switch between different accounts and blogs that you have author rights to. Simply choose your account and blog and you are all set to go.
- Write and save/publish: You can write a post, assign labels, and then either save it as a draft or immediately publish it. Saving as draft is handy if you need to wait until you have Internet connectivity.
- Photos from camera and gallery: If you see something interesting, you can take a photo directly from the app and include it in the blog post. You can also browse your gallery to include the ones you like.
- Sharing to Blogger from gallery or browser: Blogger is one of the available sharing options. If you come across a photo in the gallery, or a website while browsing, you can share the content to the Blogger app directly from the sharing menu.
- Share location: You can share your location by activating the location bar and selecting the correct location. This information will be included in your post.
- View saved/published posts: By switching to the List View, you can view all your drafts and published posts that you wrote using the app. By performing a long-press on a published post you can invoke a menu that includes the option to view your post in a browser.
- and much more.

The salivation express is coming back around again and this time it has its eyes on the T-Mobile G-Slate. First announced at CES in January, it’s a definite formidable opponent to the Moto Xoom and most certainly worthy enough to take on what’s its face, you know, the one whose company is named after a fruit? On paper, we have to admit, this device is coming to the forefront packing some serious heat. The device, upon release in “the coming months“, will tout HSPA+ 4G speeds (21-42 mb/s), a high definition 8.9″ 3D-capable multi-touch display, ability to record in 3D and full HD video. Read More…

Dropcam, a popular consumer video monitoring system, now allows you to use their monitoring service via an Android app. The service works by integrating itself with your WiFi network, allowing you to fully monitor that which is important to you, remotely. The set up is simple, utilizing hardware made by a company called Axis. There are two models to choose from. One is a standard Dropcam camera, only offering video capture, that will run you $200 bucks. The second model will run you $280 bucks, the Dropcam Echo, which allows you to capture both audio and video.
The service allows you to monitor remotely from a PC or your mobile phone for free. However, the company offers an extended version of their service which gives you full access to DVR capabilities, beginning at $8.95. Sounds like a small price to pay for peace of mind. Head on over to our apps database for more info on the app and check out Dropcam’s site for even more details.

A while back we told you that FedEx would be partnering with HP to create a mobile printing solution whereby anyone could print at public locations Worldwide from their BlackBerry smartphone using cloud-based technology. Well the wait is finally over. FedEx just announced that FedEx Office Print & Go is now live at over 1,600 participating locations with more to come later this year. This will allow BlackBerry users to print PowerPoint, Word, Adobe pdf files, etc. directly from their BlackBerry with a press of a button.
To get started, all you need to do is install the HP ePrint application to your device. It adds a nice little Print option to your BlackBerry menu that be accessed from your email, docs2go, or when viewing an image. Next, follow these simple steps: Click print, locate the nearest participating print center (using your device’s GPS), send the document, get your retrieval code and input into the print and go machine, approve and print. It’s just that easy to do. This is definitely a must have application for anyone travelling or working remotely without access to a printer.
Are you constantly on the go and need to print in a hurry? If so, let us know what you think of this announcement in the comments below. The HP ePrint application is available for free for all BlackBerry devices running OS 4.5 and higher. Keep reading for the full press release. Thanks Dave!

The weather widget in the new LG Optimus 2X is pretty slick. It has gotten a lot of attention, but sadly was tied specifically into that one phone, and LG never made it available for public consumption. However, XDA-Developers member Sony_Ericsson_X10 has found a way to pull the correct .apk file out of the Optimus 2X system dump files to make it work on any Android phone. The only caveat, as he mentions, is that default behavior is to take up the entire homescreen, so it’ll take a custom launcher like LauncherPro to resize the widget to take up only half — as seen in the picture above. If you’re looking for a new (pretty!) weather widget, head over to XDA and give it a try. Let us know your thoughts!

*Update: Looks like this may be the case for Bold 9650 users as well. Make sure you’re running the last official OS from Verizon and see if the update is available to you.
A few users have been reporting in today and it looks like OS 6 may be on the way down the pipeline from Verizon. Justin snagged us this screencap of his 9330 where it looks like OS 6.0.0.431 is available for an OTA update. Still no sign of OS 6 on Verizon’s download site, but it’s not unlike them to make the wireless update option available ahead of time. If you have a 9330 and are running an official OS, head to the wireless update option and let us know if it’s showing for you. Thanks Justin!

ADWLauncher, a well known and popular home screen replacement app, developed by AnderWeb, is getting a bit of a makeover. Actually, more of a “new version”, as the developer has now released a paid version of the app, dubbed ADWLauncher EX, or as I like to call it, ADW on crack. The EX 1.2.2 version has been released and can be downloaded at our database here or on the Android Market.
The app competes directly with home replacement apps such as Panda Home, aHome, Open Home, LauncherPro and Sweeter Home, among several others. What’s the difference between ADWLauncher and ADWLauncher EX? Well, aside from the price tag of $3.14, there are tons of tweaked functionality, lots of extras and definitely some more add ons. Hit the break for the details and to check out the pics and video. Don’t forget to let us know what you think of the app in the comments below.

WidgetLocker, by TeslaCoil Software, is a lock screen replacement app that offers a great deal of extras along with personal customization. The app assists in preventing you from requiring needless multiple steps to drill down and get back to an apps interface. You can do it all directly from the lock screen. The app allows you to place shortcuts and widgets on the lock screen, much like you can on your home screen. Moving apps around are equally as simple, you just long press and drag to reposition an app or shortcut. The functionality allows you to stay interactive with certain apps, like music players and podcasts while not accidentally unlocking the phone and touching unwanted applications. Read More…

If you’ve never heard of XTop Mobile before that’s likely because it has been "coming soon" forever now. That said, XTop Mobile has finally been released in a lovely beta fashion and is welcoming users to sign up and try out the service. That service promises to create a lot of productivity between you, your PC and your BlackBerry. The full feature set below:
- Get real-time notification of all incoming calls directly on your Laptop / PC so you don’t have to reach for your Smartphone during meetings or while you’re at your desk.
- View, send and receive emails from the BIS (i.e. hotmail, gmail) and BES accounts on your Smartphone, wherever you are, without having to connect to a 3rd Party Hotspot.
- Send and receive SMS and PIN chat messages in a chat-like window directly from your Laptop / PC screen.
- Add, edit and manage your Smartphone contacts directly from your Laptop / PC in real-time.
- Automatically back-up of all contacts, emails and text messages every time you walk-up to your laptop.
Sounds pretty awesome right? The beta is available now and gives you a full 30 days to try out the services. Full launch is expected next month but no details have yet been given indicating as to what the service may cost. Sadly, no Mac support is available as of yet either so this is just strictly for the Windows users out there. Give it a shot and let us know in the comments how it’s working out for you.

Google’s App Inventor has allowed would-be developers with no programming knowledge the opportunity to build Android apps for quite some time. But maybe you’d like to build an app, but just don’t care for the App Inventor. Or, maybe you have a bigger problem — maybe you want to build a cross-platform app. AppMakr has been affording people that opportunity on the iOS platform, and they have now made their program available to Android and WP7 platforms in beta form. AppMakr was used to create 3500 apps on the iOS platform, some of them very high-profile. Anyone interested can join the beta process at no charge by signing up for an account at the Appmakr website.
Anyone giving it a try? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
