RadioShack to Begin Taking Google Wallet Payments on September 1st?

The initial signs of a nationwide rollout for Google Wallet have come in the form of a leaked internal RadioShack email. According to the screen shot passed to Engadget, The Shack is set to start off accepting Google Wallet payments on September 1st.

We’re not really surprised to see RadioShack on the forefront of the new NFC-enabled payment as they had been 1 of the initial retail partners announced with the service. On the other hand, we were pleasantly caught off guard to find out that Google Wallet might be prepared for its huge-scale debut in just a matter of days.

Even More HTC Thunderbolt Cases Begin Arriving at Verizon Stores

This image has no alt text

We’ve seen plenty of HTC Thunderbolt cases showing up over the past week, despite the fact that a rumored February 14th release date seems to be giving way to an a second rumored February 24th release date. While the first group of cases we saw landed at Best Buy, if I’m not mistaken this is the first group to be found at a Verizon retail store.

The bunch features three different cases: a “high gloss” silicone cover, a snap-on hard cover, and a combo hard case with gel cover all with kickstand cutouts. Interestingly, the hard cover alone and the hard cover/gel combo both cost $24.99, while the gel cover by itself goes for $19.99. We would love to sprinkle in some “well the cases are at Verizon, maybe it will show up sooner than the 24th” speculation, but with the way this release date keeps fluctuating we don’t want to add to the fire. At least we know that when it does show up casing options will be ample.

The ad also confirms folks will need to purchase at least 1 month of data before they can unlock WiFi functionality.

It’s also been confirmed that Best Buy will be taking presales for the Motorola XOOM starting February 17th, though it wasn’t said how much you’d need to put down. [Droid Life 1, 2, 3]

T-Mobile to begin throttling data usage over 5GB beginning October 16?

Back in April, T-Mobile was the only wireless provider toying with the idea of throttling data instead of capping it, meaning that instead of cutting customers off at a certain point, speeds would simply be reduced to offset what T-Mobile would call excessive use of data.

It was thought that this was going to happen then, but a new internal document brought to us by TmoNews appears to reveal that the throttling switch is being flipped this Saturday, October 16, once a user hits a threshold of 5GB. In all honesty, this seems like a pretty reasonable alternative to capping data usage, especially at 5 GB. As T-Mobile puts it, 5GB is equivalent to about 125,000 page visits of Yahoo.com, and only 1% of customers will ever experience throttling.

I for one would love to see other carriers go this route, and perhaps if T-Mobile leads by example, they just might follow suit.

R2-D2 DROID 2 Dummy Units Begin Rolling Out

While the special edition R2-D2 DROID 2 units aren’t going to be rolling out until the end of the month, it looks like some of the dummy units have already begun to slip into stores. Judging by these shots, it looks like there’s going to be some custom packaging to go along with it.

I could sit here and bore you with speculation, but it would probably be better if you saw the shots for yourself. Remember, this new little beep-beep-booping bundle of Motorola joy will only be coming to select stores when it is released September 30th. Be sure to let us know what you think in the comments.

BlackBerry App World 2.0 roll out to begin soon

App World

After having just recently been released in beta form, BlackBerry App World 2.0 is now set to roll out to the masses at some point today. Lots of new things happening with the actual release version that were not fully present in the beta release. A quick breakdown is as follows:

Credit Card Payment Option

  • With the new BlackBerry App World, customers are able to purchase applications using major credit cards, including Visa and MasterCard. Carrier billing may also be supported by certain carriers.

Easier Application Discovery

  • BlackBerry App World adds new tabbed sections for various applications lists. Users can horizontally swipe or scroll to quickly view the Top 25 Free Apps, Top 25 Paid Apps and Top 25 Themes, as well as the Newest Apps and Recently Updated Apps.

QR barcode scanning

  • Is now  supported, allowing users to scan a QR code associated with an application from anywhere – the web, print ads, brochures, etc. BlackBerry App World will quickly find the related application, and automatically open and download its page.

BlackBerry ID

  • BlackBerry ID provides customers with a device-independent user identification (ID) for BlackBerry App World. It enables credit card payments and allows customers to seamlessly transfer their personal library of free and purchased apps when they switch to a new BlackBerry smartphone.

The UI changes and overall performance enhancements that BlackBerry App World 2.0 brings should make it a great update. One of the most notable changes however though, is that BlackBerry App World as of today will allow developers to set pricing on their apps starting at $0.99. The upgrade is set to be rolled out today, so be on the lookout for an update notification so that you may get the most up to date release when it becomes available. In case anyone was counting as well, BlackBerry App World now has paid apps in 58 countries.

Let the Droid X Pre-Orders Begin!

It’s official. The Droid X is available for pre-order at your local Best Buy as of today. Best Buy is offering the phone a little differently than Verizon is, you can pre-order the phone for $50 and pay the other $150 when you go in to pick it up. $200 flat, no rebates, no gimmicks! I headed over to my Best Buy this morning and got the top spot on the pre-order list. If you are serious about wanting the Droid X and want to avoid camping out, get to your Best Buy ASAP and reserve yours now!

Droid X Android 2.2 Froyo Flash 10.1

For me, the Droid X will be the phone to beat on Verizon until Q4 for a few reasons, namely the huge screen and the slim profile. I am pretty excited about the integrated HDMI, and I love the camera, but being able to have a phone with a screen that beats out even some of the dedicated GPS units out there is a big draw for me. The thought of syncing my phone with my car streaming Pandora, Grooveshark, Slacker, etc. while getting turn by turn directions, and being able to take a break and make a phone call all on the same unit is a very happy one for me. The next stop after picking up my brand spanking new Droid will be a look at the accessory aisle. I’m liking the looks of the car mount, and I am almost positive I’ll be wanting the extended batteries. But what about you? What will be the features and accessories you will be most looking forward to? Let me know in the comments!

Thanks for the tips guys!

Verizon Planning to Begin Droid Eris 2.1 Update Roll Out Tomorrow?

Last Friday we reported that a support site for the HTC Droid Eris OTA update to Android 2.1 had gone live, but no details were revealed as far as the exact date were concerned. Reports are now coming in that the update is planned to begin its roll out to Verizon subscribers tomorrow, the 11th of May. Well, it is “tentatively” planned for tomorrow. We all know how that goes…

Even if it somehow manages to get delayed again (that could never happen, right?), Eris owners can still rest easy knowing they will probably get their update before the many unfortunate Samsung Moment and HTC Hero owners. We’ll be sure to let you know when the roll out is a go, or you can keep your fingers crossed and spend your day refreshing your system update screen. It’s up to you, really.

The update is mandatory and will wipe all of your stored info not on a microSD card, so remember to back up all of your important files. Your contacts will be wiped, but they are synced oh-so-handily with the cloud, so you shouldn’t have to worry about that part.

Germany 4G Auctions Begin, Europe to Follow

Germany’s first auction of new mobile spectrum for a decade kicked-off today with all four of the country’s main operators expected to bid on spectrum (pdf). According to a Dow Jones Newswires report, the auction is the first of its kind in Europe and is likely to set a benchmark for similar auctions throughout the continent.

The Netherlands, Denmark, Austria, Sweden and France are expected to hold auctions this year, with the U.K. expected to auction frequencies next year, says Business Week. Spain, Italy and Portugal have yet to say when their auctions will take place.

“Many European countries will follow our auction closely,” said Matthias Kurth, president of Bundesnetzagentur, the German telecoms regulator. Analysts expect the auction to generate between 3 billion and 7 billion euros, a far cry from the 50 billion raised in 2000.

Spectrum is being auctioned on four different bands: 800MHz, 1.8GHz, 2GHz and 2.6GHz and includes the ‘digital dividend’ spectrum freed up from the switch from analogue to digital TV.

T-Mobile, Vodafone, KPN (E-Plus) and Telefonica’s O2 will bid on the frequencies. E-Plus and O2 – the two smaller players – took legal action against the regulator last year, arguing that the auction rules favour T-Mobile and Vodafone as they already own significant spectrum below 1GHz. While this action was rejected by the courts, Dow Jones Newswires notes that further legal steps are possible.

The 800 MHz frequencies come with specific terms attached. The winners commit to building a network to cover at least 90 percent of the population in rural towns and districts, starting with areas with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants, before they can use these frequencies in more densely populated areas.

Meanwhile, nine telecoms firms are bidding for three pan India licences that cover 22 regions. Bids for 3G spectrum licenses in India’s biggest markets are approaching $1 billion apiece just three days into the two-week auction.

“The auction has started and it is going smoothly,” said a telecom ministry official.

Leading Indian operators such as Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Essar are among the applicants bidding for the spectrum, along with Tata DoCoMo. The government owned operators MTNL and BSNL, which already offer 3G services, will also pay the same price as the three winners of the auction for the pan-Indian licences.

Analysts say that the bidding for the 20-year 3G licenses will be aggressive and could push the total raised closer to $11bn. The total number of mobile phones sold in India has jumped nearly 300% over the past few years, from 35 million in 2005 to 130 million in 2009, says the Indian Cellular Association.

India’s broadband wireless spectrum auction could kick off in about two weeks, once the 3G sale ends, notes Caroline Gabriel. The WiMAX community is battling hard to keep all three of the 2.3GHz licenses in the face of a possible TD-LTE deployment, should a Qualcomm-led group win a license. If Qualcomm does win a license, the other two Indian operators will almost certainly both use WiMAX (state-owned BSNL is already deploying).
