TouchType Drops SwiftKey X Beta into Android Market

TouchType is releasing a new keyboard app into the Android Market today with their SwiftKey X Beta (expected any time). If you’ve ever played with any previous beta releases of SwiftKey’s keyboard then this one will feel very familiar. I’ve had a chance to play with a few titles from TouchType and really dig the way I can personalize it, having it learn from my email, Facebook, and twitter accounts. The phrase prediction is crazy; I can blast through sentences without having to type full words, sometimes in less than 10 letters total.

TouchType does a terrific job of listening to users and collecting feedback. In fact, many of the features you see in today’s release come as a result of listening to the users. Should you see something that acts buggy or find room for improvement, be sure to let them know!

There are plenty of alternative keyboards in the android Market and I suggest downloading one or two to see what fits you best. Having said that, SwiftKey X Beta should be one of the first you look at.

GetGlue for BlackBerry now in beta – Request an invite

GetGlue Beta

One of the applications that I have been praying to hit the BlackBerry platform has finally reached beta. If you haven’t used GetGlue before, it is the leading social network for entertainment, now with close to 1 million users. With GetGlue you can check-in to your favorite TV shows, movies, music, games, and more. You can also review, comment, and share your thoughts on these topics with Facebook and Twitter, with one click. Your reward? Stickers, stickers, stickers. You get these stickers the more times you check-in and rate the media you love. And as you can see from the picture above, they even send actual stickers for your achievments to you. Might seem kind of lame, but I haven’t received anything for free from Twitter or Facebook.

The beta seems very stable, and I have yet to encounter any errors or bugs. No word on device compatibility, but it seems to be working on a variety of devices. If you don’t get the invite right away, you can also use their extremely fast loading mobile site. Hit the break for screenshots from the GetGlue for BlackBerry app.

CyanogenMod 7 Public Beta Available for Galaxy Tab

Have CyanogenMod on your phone? Want it on your Galaxy Tab? Well XDA user Technomancer has a public beta currently available of his CyanogenMod 7 Gingerbread port for the Galaxy Tab. While still a work in progress, most basic functions are working. Having updated it 3 times since it’s first beta release, January 28,  it’s clear he’s working on making it a bit more stable.

This is a beta build of CyanogenMod 7 gingerbread
by Technomancer TCMAN-dmg on freenode.net and irc.droid-life.com

Bug reports: open issues at http://github.com/techomancer/android_device_samsung_galaxytab

This build is for beta testing, not for general consumption

CREDITS

See http://cmsgs.com for more info
The github for CMSGS Tab is http://github.com/cmsgs

It is based on great work of CM SGS team http://cmsgs.com

Thanks to codeworkx, coolya and noobnl and all beta testers.

INSTALLATION

Your Tab should be partitioned with P1_add_hidden
It should have unsigned bootloaders that can load Euro ROMs
Wipe your Tab (data, dbdata, cache)
Flash it with heimdall (use simple flashme script for full flash)
Or just flash zImage and factoryfs.ext4.

For Google apps download latest HDPI apps for Gingerbread http://goo-inside.me/gapps/ and install using recovery.

Status
Voice: OK
3G Data: connection established but default route not set
Wifi: works
BT: sometimes stuck on startup, doesnt fully pair
GPS: broken
Buttons backlight – linked to LCD backlight
Sensors:
– BMA020/BMA150 Accelerometer
– AK8973B: gravity OK, rest needs tuning
– BH1721FVC Lightsensor: OK
– L3G4200D gyro: uninmplemented
– Proximity: faked at 10cm
Camera: not tested

Issues and workarounds
* Stuck on CM boot ani after flash
Probably / data is not mounted.
run “adb shell mount”
it will show list of mounted partitions, if /data is not mounted to /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 as rfs, format the /data partiton.
To do that “adb reboot recovery”. “adb shell” when in recovery, “parted /dev/block/mmcblk0″, initialize/format partition 2 to fat32 using “mkfs 2 fat32″

* BT doesnt start
Try again
Try rebooting
If that doesnt help try “adb shell stop hciattach” Sometimes hciattach service gets stuck when starting.

Changelog:
2011-02-03 New kernel from Update1
Refreshed repo and rebuild with latest
added codeworkx’s brcm_patchram_plus fix that should hopefully fix bluetooth initialization

Used Nexus S GPS binaries
Switched to init compiled from sources
Switched to CWM 3.x (still very broken)

2011-01-29 Fixed 3G data

JeeoSuite enters private beta testing – Want in? We’ve got 100 invites for our readers

Jeeosuite

While you may not have heard of JeeoSuite as of yet, we’re pretty positive that once you get your hands on it you’ll pretty much love it. The WiFi web portal designed for BlackBerry smartphones opens up quite a few options for BlackBerry owners. While some of the features have been around for a while, no one app has been able to bring them all together in as nice of a package as JeeoSuite. So what does JeeoSuite do exactly? Glad you asked. Check out the features listed below:

  • File Browser: Access your SD Card and Device Memory. Upload, Download, even stream media over Wifi to your computer web-browser.
  • Security: Upload / Download permissions can be quickly toggled right in the app for added security.
  • Optimize Memory: Never pay for a Memory Cleaning app again! Free up memory with the click of a button in JeeoSuite.
  • Screenshot: Take a snapshot of the current screen on your phone. Screenshots appear in your computer web-browser allowing you instant access.
  • Locate Phone: Nothings more frustrating than trying to find where you left your phone. JeeoSuite will send out an audible alert so you can track it down.
  • Bookmarks: Create and Edit Bookmarks. Take them with you where-ever you go and browse them on any computer.
  • Dashboard: View your phones vital stats like Memory Usage, OS Version, Battery Life, IP Address, GPS Location, and more in the System Dashboard.

The set up process is pretty darn easy as well. Download, install and enable WiFi. Once enabled, you’ll be given an internal IP address to which you visit via your computer web browser. From there, you are presented with the JeeoSuite dashboard that allows you to control all the features available. The option to screen cap from your device to your computer is fast and easy and I won’t admit to how many times I’ve had to use the locate phone feature to find my BlackBerry. A premium version is scheduled for later release but for now, we’ve got 100 invites to give away thanks to MBLWare. Drop some comments on the post, we’ll pick some winners for next week.

*Also, please note: Jeeosuite makes use of the WiFi on your device. If your device does not have WiFi, please do not enter. It’s rather pointless.*

Firefox 4 Beta 10 Improves Stability, Uses Less Memory

Firefox 4 beta 10Hot on the heels of last week’s beta 9 release, Mozilla has pushed out another update for Firefox 4. With the final release drawing near, Mozilla is hard at work squashing the last few bugs blocking the Firefox 4 release. While the latest release, beta 10, doesn’t get them all, it is stable enough for early adopters.

If you’d like to try out beta 10 and help out in the testing process, head over to the Mozilla beta downloads page and grab a copy.

For those that have been using Firefox 4 beta releases for some time, there isn’t much new in this release. Most of the focus has been on improving stability and performance, particularly when it comes to hardware acceleration, one of the much-touted new features in Firefox 4.

Beta 10 sees Mozilla taking a more conservative approach to hardware acceleration by restricting it to only certain graphics cards. For the time being, if your graphics card isn’t completely up to the task, Firefox 4 will automatically disable it via a new graphics driver blacklist. Eventually Mozilla plans to expand its hardware acceleration support, but for now only cards from Intel, AMD, and Nvidia will make the cut.

On the Mac side, Flash performance should be a bit better in this release, and, perhaps more importantly, it should be less likely to crash your browser. There have also been some small tweaks to cut down on Firefox 4’s memory footprint.

While this beta shows Firefox 4 very close to complete, Mozilla is still planning at least one more beta release before Firefox 4 is considered ready for prime time. The current roadmap puts the final release of Firefox 4 near the end of February 2011.

Nokia offers Nokia Reader RSS app in Beta Labs

Like most of you, I am a very busy person and don’t have time to sit around clicking links to hundreds of sites to get my daily news. I have been using Google Reader for years as an RSS aggregator and also use this through Gravity on my Nokia N8. I just read over on the Nokia Conversations site that a new Nokia Beta Labs product is available for reading RSS feeds. The Nokia Reader app looks pretty slick, as you can see in the video below, and I just downloaded it to my Nokia N8.

If you are reading this site, then you likely know about RSS and use some kind of reader to browse through information. The cool functions in this new Nokia Reader app include a home screen widget and push notifications. I would LOVE to see support for Google Reader sync so I did not have to setup all my feeds in another application, but this is an early beta so maybe we will see this added. They should have support for importing OPML files though since setting things up by searching directories or manually typing URLs is a bit tedious.

Nokia Reader is compatible with S60 5th Edition (excluding Nokia 5800 XpressMusic) and Symbian^3 devices. Nokia Reader has been tested to work with Nokia N97, Nokia N97 Mini, Nokia X6, Nokia N8 and Nokia C7.

Any readers try this out yet?

XTop Mobile now available in beta form

XTop Mobile

If you’ve never heard of XTop Mobile before that’s likely because it has been "coming soon" forever now. That said, XTop Mobile has finally been released in a lovely beta fashion and is welcoming users to sign up and try out the service. That service promises to create a lot of productivity between you, your PC and your BlackBerry. The full feature set below:

  • Get real-time notification of all incoming calls directly on your Laptop / PC so you don’t have to reach for your Smartphone during meetings or while you’re at your desk.
  • View, send and receive emails from the BIS (i.e. hotmail, gmail) and BES accounts on your Smartphone, wherever you are, without having to connect to a 3rd Party Hotspot.
  • Send and receive SMS and PIN chat messages in a chat-like window directly from your Laptop / PC screen.
  • Add, edit and manage your Smartphone contacts directly from your Laptop / PC in real-time.
  • Automatically back-up of all contacts, emails and text messages every time you walk-up to your laptop.

Sounds pretty awesome right? The beta is available now and gives you a full 30 days to try out the services. Full launch is expected next month but no details have yet been given indicating as to what the service may cost. Sadly, no Mac support is available as of yet either so this is just strictly for the Windows users out there. Give it a shot and let us know in the comments how it’s working out for you.

Firefox 4 Enters Home Stretch With Beta 9 Release

Firefox 4 beta 9Mozilla has released a new beta version of Firefox 4, as the next major update for the popular web browser nears completion. Firefox 4 beta 9 is primarily a bug fix release, though there a couple of small new features.

If you’d like to take Beta 9 for spin on your desktop, head over to the Mozilla beta downloads page. It’s been a very long development cycle for Firefox 4 — the final version isn’t likely to arrive until the end of February — however, the enhancements being made over versions 3.5 and 3.6 are substantial.

Fortunately for early adopters the beta releases are stable enough to use in day-to-day browsing, so it’s not like we’re waiting a long time for nothing. We can reap the rewards well before the official release date.

On the Windows platform, beta 9 now ships with the tabs-in-the-title-bar feature we covered earlier this month. Firefox 4 beta 9 also includes support for IndexedDB, which allows approved sites to store data on your computer for offline use. Other improvements include an overhaul of the bookmarks and history code, enabling faster bookmarking and improving Firefox’s startup performance.

The best news for those eagerly awaiting the final release of Firefox 4 is that beta 9 has squashed some 660 bugs. Indeed, beta 9 is among the fastest and stablest betas we’ve used, but it’s still not ready for prime time. Problems remain with the new tab-sorting interface — dubbed “Panorama” — and there are enough other small problems that it looks like we’ll see a beta 10 before Firefox 4 is official.

So far Mozilla is sticking to its “when it’s ready” slogan and has not set a final release date for Firefox 4. With the latest nightly builds already renamed to beta 10, you can expect one more beta. After that there will be at least one release candidate, which pushes the final release of Firefox 4 well into February.

Rogue Developer Steals Iron Soldiers Beta Game, Publishes To Market

This image has no alt text

Take notice, good-willed developers. One popular method to perfect a beta app before going live to Android Market is to offer it as a direct download to a small group who can test it, submit bugs, suggest changes, and overall provide a tight-knit system for feedback. That’s exactly what cyberniko on XDA intended to accomplish with the beta launch of a game called Iron Soldiers. But he got more than he bargained for.

Another member of XDA allegedly downloaded the unsigned APK, signed it himself, and submitted to Android Market as if it were his own game. Essentially, he released the developers game as his own, before the game ever came out of beta. If it’s true… what a sham and what a shame.

The offending developer, DavinciDevelopers, unpublished the allegedly stolen game from Android Market, but their information is still cached on the Googlewebz. That developer has a number of titles for sale on Android Market, and I would suggest (if this is all true) that nobody purchase a title from them. Other forms of boycott may include buying, rating 1 star, uninstalling, a returning to Android Market with whatever reason you may choose.

The game is still in beta and you can download it here. Check out the REAL developer’s site at Vuxia.com. The game looks pretty neat and the 6-months of work really shows- Iron Soliders seems very polished. Perhaps an unfortunate incident will lead to more fertile pastures… I know I’m eager to check out more from Vuxia after seeing some screenies and hearing some concepts.

Learn from another developer’s mistakes if you’re working on your own app or game. Sure, launch a beta in a forum to help the dev process along, but make sure you protect your APK and cover your butt by whatever means necessary.

I just want to leave a little disclaimer that the accusation of stolen property haven’t been confirmed as true/false and I’m going by what the developer announced in their own thread on XDA as it seems to be a reputable report.

Firefox 4 Beta 8 Arrives With Faster Graphics, Better Sync

Mozilla has dropped the eighth beta release of Firefox 4. Originally intended as a quick update to fix some issues on beta 7, Firefox 4 beta 8 actually brings over 1,400 bug fixes, some improvements to the new add-ons interface, better syncing and more hardware accelerated WebGL support. There’s also a beta update for Android and Maemo mobile phones, which we’ll look at later.

If you’d like to take Beta 8 for spin on your desktop, head over to the Mozilla beta downloads page. It’s been a very long development cycle for Firefox 4 — the final version is still a couple of months out, since once the betas are done, Firefox 4 moves into the release candidate stage. However, the enhancements being made over versions 3.5 and 3.6 are substantial, and these releases are stable enough to use in day-to-day browsing, so it’s not like we’re waiting a long time for nothing. We can reap the rewards well before the official release date.

The improvements to Firefox’s new sync feature — which syncs bookmarks, browsing history, user preferences and open tabs between both desktop and mobile versions of Firefox — make signing up and starting sync easier for new users. Most of us use multiple screens every day — one or two computers, and at least one smartphone with a web browser — keeping it all in sync is increasingly difficult. That’s where Firefox’s sync tools come in and the streamlined sync interface makes it even easier to pick up where you left off, no matter what device you’re using.

The sync updates in Firefox 4 beta 8 coincide with similar improvements in Firefox Mobile 4 beta 3 for the Android and Maemo mobile platforms.

Firefox 4 beta 8 now supports WebGL on more graphics cards across both Mac and Windows operating systems. WebGL bridges the gap between HTML5 tools like the new Canvas tag and OpenGL, an OS-native graphics engine, to speed up HTML5 web apps and animations. If you’d like to see the new WebGL support in action, grab Firefox beta 8 and head over to the Flight of the Navigator demo page, or check out the release notes page which has a video of the demo.

The latest beta isn’t just faster with HTML5 graphics either. Although Mozilla hasn’t released any precise speed figures, in our testing, the start up time was faster than beta 7 and general browsing felt snappier as well.

The new Firefox Add-ons page

Firefox 4 beta 8 refines the main add-ons page (which is now a page, rather than a separate window, a nice improvement). The URL bar has been removed for the add-ons page, and the button design has been revamped. Although the new, slicker-looking buttons do make the interface a bit nicer, add-ons are still variously referred to as “extensions” and “add-ons.” You can see which “extensions” you have installed, but then you “Get Add-ons.” Firefox veterans aren’t likely to even notice the difference, but it could be confusing for new users.

The list of bug fixes for this release is extensive, but Mozilla’s nightly builds have already been renamed to beta 9, which means we’ll see at least one more, possibly two more beta releases before Firefox 4 arrives in final form. Mozilla hasn’t set an official release date for Firefox 4 yet, but it’s expect to arrive sometime in early 2011.

Swype Goes Into Open Beta

A lot of the newer Android phones come with the awesome Swype keyboard pre-installed. If you have a Galaxy S phone, for example, you’re very familiar with Sype. If you aren’t familiar with it, it allows you type simply by tapping the first letter of the word you wish to enter and simply dragging your finger over all the letters in the word. Personally, in spite of the physical keyboard on my Epic, I rarely use it due to Swype. The only downside of Swype was that if it did not come pre-installed on your phone, it was only available via a very limited, closed beta test. Until today. Swype announced today that they are opening the beta up to anyone interested in giving it a try.

Keep in mind, this is still a beta application, and may have some issues on your particular phone. But if you have been waiting for this, hit the source link and sign up with an email account that comes to your phone. Note: If Swype DID come pre-installed on your phone, this won’t work at all…but you don’t need it.

Vlingo’s ActionBar enables Android users to type or speak commands to do all of the things they would normally do with Vlingo. Vlingo brings the same adaptation and predictive intelligence used for voice recognition to typed commands with the ActionBar, allowing users to initiate actions when it’s not as convenient speak to their phones — like on a noisy bus or quiet conference room.

Trillian leaves beta, now available for $4.99 in the Market

Keeping track of your friends these days can be a daunting task with many of them using their own preferred IM clients, and while there are a number of apps you can use to regulate this task, you might want to give Trillian a try.  The folks over at Cerulean Studios have been hard at work customizing this application for the Android platform.  The app just came out of beta and is available now on the Android Market for $4.99 (Don’t forget you have a 15 min window to return it if you don’t like it).

Supports – AIM, Facebook Chat, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk, ICQ and several others.  It’s nice to see the app using cloud technology.  Moving from one Android device to another?  No problem.  Just download the app on to your new device, log in, and voilà.
