BlackBerry Bold 9900 and BlackBerry Torch 9860 spotted on the streets of Toronto

BlackBerry In Toronto

Quite honestly, we don’t really have a lot to say about this image. Since it came to us over the CrackBerry Twitter account and it was so beautiful we thought it fitting enough to go ahead and toss it up for everyone to enjoy. What you see above is both a BlackBerry Bold 9900 and what is presumed to be a BlackBerry Torch 9860, in other words the GSM variation of the Torch 9850 that’s set to head to Sprint. Both are shown running on Telus but sadly that’s where the joy ends. Still no official device dates for either device as of yet, in fact the 9850/60 still remains unannounced unless you consider the release of the device simulator an official announcement.

Phones 4 u gives us yet another sneak peak of the BlackBerry Bold 9900 on video

With Vodafone UK recently giving us a sneak peek into the BlackBerry Bold 9900, Phones4U have also joined in on the parade. However, rather than just do a plan old review of the device, Phones4U have added their very own twist to the review. It’s fun to see these videos pop up, but they just add to the pain of waiting for the device. We still have no official release date for the Bold 9900 or 9930 but we’re hopeful that we’ll hear one for sure before long. Check out the video for yourself.

While you’re at it you can join in on the discussions on the Bold 9900 in the forums.

Take playlists one step further with Moodagent for BlackBerry devices

Moodagent for BlackBerry

I have a hard time deciding what music to listen to on my BlackBerry. I usually cop out and press shuffle or just play a specific song and that’s about it. While perusing through BlackBerry App World the other day I stumbled across an app called Moodagent by Syntonetic. Previously available for iOSAndroid, and Nokia, it’s a cloud based music player that creates randomized playlists from your music library and suggests music from the web based on your mood. At any given moment my mood and musical tastes change so I thought I’d give it a try. It’s a pretty cool twist on creating playlists with added features not available on other platforms.

Challenge your friends and earn real-life rewards with Bouncity on your BlackBerry

Bouncity for BlackBerry

Bouncity is a new location based social gaming platform that certainly everyone will compare to foursquare. While it does have some similarities, the differences really set it apart. With Bouncity there is essentially a three step process: Go places, do challenges and get rewards. As you venture out into the real word (which hopefully you do) you’ll have to complete challenges are various venues that include checking in, answering questions, taking quizzes, taking photos and more. Along the way you’ll earn different rewards in Bouncity which you can turn into real-life goods by allocating your rewards points. There is of course integration with other social networks like Facebook and Twitter as well. Overall Bouncity is a pretty sweet social game to take on with your friends. If you’re a fan of foursquare, Gowalla and the like, this one is definitely worth checking out. Grab the BlackBerry app free from the link below.

Quick Tip: How to dial phone numbers that contain letters on your BlackBerry device

1800COMCAST

I’m a bit ashamed to admit my ignorance, and I’m sure my fellow CrackBerry writers will take immense joy in rubbing this in later, but for the sake of it possibly helping others, here I go. I had no clue how to dial phone numbers that contained letters in them like 1-800-COMCAST on my BlackBerry device until today. I ran across an app in BlackBerry App World that you enter the number like Comcast’s and it gave you the numerical equivalent. I was so excited that I immediately thought to do a review on it and searched CrackBerry to see if that app had been covered before. Low and behold, on the main page in a Q&A submission (back in 2007) was an even easier way to dial those numbers…no app needed! If you’re like me and have no clue how to dial numbers containing letters, keep reading and you’ll see how easily it’s done!

BlackBerry Bold 9900 simulator surfaces online

Bold 9900

Since not all of us were able to attend BlackBerry World this year that means that we all had to live out the Bold 9900, and OS7 through our computer screens by watching hands on videos from those who were lucky enough to play with it. If you have been dying to get your hands on OS7 and see how it differs from OS6, and to get a little alone time with the 9900, you can now simulate that relationship with the device simulator. So, if you aren’t out with the family at a bbq, or doing something else this Memorial Day weekend give it a download and check it out for yourself.

BlackBerry Torch 2 leaks continue, this time on video!

No surprise here but, the BlackBerry Torch 2 leaks are continuing. First was some low lighted images then came the higher res ones and now — a video. Although it’s not the first time we’ve seen the BlackBerry Torch 2 on video, it does give us one of the better walkthroughs of the hardware and software from a pre-release perspective. Revisiting the specs on the BlackBerry Torch 2:

  • Processor: 1.2 GHz processor
  • Radio: Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE ; Tri-band HSPA 14.4Mbps
  • Display: 3.2" VGA – 480 x 640 capacitive touchscreen display
  • Memory: 8GB storage + 768MB RAM + up to 32GB MicroSD
  • Connectivity: WiFi + Bluetooth + NFC
  • Camera: 5 MP
  • Battery: 1300MAh battery
  • Dimension: 14.6mm thick
  • Sensors: magnetometer

By now, this thing has leaked onto the web so many times we’re really starting to wonder when RIM will actually put the official stamp on it and announce it. Previous Torch owners, after having watched the video will be upgrading to the BlackBerry Torch 2 or will you be holding out for something better? Sound off in the comments and let us know.

Review: Freedom Pro Bluetooth Keyboard for BlackBerry Smartphones

Freedom Bluetooth Pro Keyboard

In looking to lighten my daily load when travelling to and from university, I wanted to leave my Macbook at home and just use my BlackBerry. It was fine for a while until I had to start writing essays and pages and pages for coursework. The Torch keyboard wasn’t going to cut it. Of course there was the option of using the university computers but you weren’t always guaranteed to get one so I had to get myself a bluetooth. That’s when I got the Freedom Pro Bluetooth Keyboard. Small and light enough to join my books and notebooks and not kill my back while doing so. In fact, most of this article was written using the keyboard with my BlackBerry Torch. So, let’s see how it faired with daily usage.

Leaked OS 7.0.0.100 for the BlackBerry 9810 9860 and 9900

BlackBerry OS 7

It seems like a few months before the next wave of devices lands we always get an influx of OS leaks that many of us can’t use. This time is no different, with some more OS 7 leaks coming our way. These come in the form of OS 7.0.0.100 for the BlackBerry 9810, 9860 and 9900. Again, most of you won’t be able to do anyhting with these, but some may look to tinker around a bit. Word of caution – please, please, please don’t try to load these onto any other devices, bad things may happen :-) Look for hybrids and perhaps some updated core apps to pop up soon as well.

BlackBerry Torch 2 poses for the camera yet again

BlackBerry Torch 2

We haven’t seen much of the upcoming BlackBerry Torch 2 in the last few weeks, but the guys at TechnoBuffalo tossed up a few images in case you’re in withdrawal. Nothing really new here from these shots, but we do get to see more of my least favorite battery door to date (I think it looks Bedazzled!). Also we can tell from the icons that this guy is running OS 7 as expected. A quick recap of the BlackBerry Torch 2 specs:

BlackBerry Torch 2 Key Specs:

  • Processor: 1.2 GHz processor
  • Radio: Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE ; Tri-band HSPA 14.4Mbps
  • Display: 3.2" VGA – 480 x 640 capacitive touchscreen display
  • Memory: 8GB storage + 768MB RAM + up to 32GB MicroSD
  • Connectivity: WiFi + Bluetooth + NFC
  • Camera: 5 MP
  • Battery: 1300MAh battery
  • Dimension: 14.6mm thick
  • Sensors: magnetometer

If all goes according to plan, the Torch 2 should be launching sometime after the Bold 9900/9930 (which we still have no official launch date for). It may be the next in line or mixed in with one of the other rumored 2011 devices we should see before the end of the year. One more image after the break.

The BlackBerry PlayBook Application Initiative: Working together to get the third party apps we want ASAP!

We Want Your Apps!

The BlackBerry PlayBook has been on the market for a little over a month now, and while we’ve seen the catalog of PlayBook apps grow, we have yet to see most of the BIG TIME services that sooo many of us use daily on our computers and other mobile devices come to the Tablet OS platform (seriously, I can’t even imagine going back to life without Kindle, Skype, Dropbox or Evernote and desperately want these apps on my PlayBook).

Not wanting to wait around in limbo, PlayBook owners have been reaching out to companies via email, phone and forums since the PlayBook’s launch to find out when these apps are going to become available. The responses have been mixed -  some favorable and some that are less than inspiring. For example, the response I received from Skype was that they’re in a "wait and see mode" and "certainly not committing anything at this stage around development for PlayBook." This wait and see mode seems to be a popular trend which means it’s on us CrackBerry Nation to let these companies know that we don’t want to wait for their apps… we need them ASAP!

To that end, CrackBerry forums member technomensch had the inspired idea to startup the BlackBerry PlayBook Applications Initiative thread, which puts into one place all of the user outreach to these companies. Follow the link below to jump over to the thread where you can find out how you can help contribute to the cause and see where these popular companies are at with their PlayBook apps. Let’s make it happen!!

Since its inception BlackBerry Travel has enjoyed a lot of attraction from numerous people worldwide, but to the disappointment of many, it was initially available only in North America, UK and Spain. No excuses this time not to download the application, so head over to BlackBerry App World for the download. If your country is not listed above, no worry, the application will likely find its way to other countries with time – patience is key.

AppVerse now live in the CrackBerry App Store! Delivers social interaction and features to aid in BlackBerry app discovery!!

AppVerse in the CrackBerry App Store

One of the big deficiencies within mobile app store environments these days is the ability to meaningfully discover apps, games and themes that are going to be worthwhile for you. Best Sellers and Top Downloads lists do typically provide a good starting point for app discovery, but moving beyond that app stores tend to fall apart. Star ratings usually regress somewhere to the mean (that 3 star average that leaves you wondering whether you should or shouldn’t download an app) and the comments left by anonymous users far too often provide little or no value (anybody notice all the spam and gibberish in App World these days?). Sum it up, and it’s no wonder so many BlackBerry users check into a site like CrackBerry daily for advice and info on what apps to download. App discovery via the app store environment itself can be frustrating!

That all changes today with the rollout of AppVerse within the CrackBerry App Store. AppVerse delivers a really trusting and engaging app store experience, thanks to the layer of social interaction and features it adds. Should you choose to create your AppVerse account (it’s not mandatory and you can shop in the CrackBerry App Store as you always have), you can setup your public profile which display app purchases you have made, along with reviews and ratings you provide (you can choose to hide apps as well and also have full control over privacy/notification settings from the My Account > AppVerse page). You can follow other AppVerse members, comment on their reviews and rate whether individual app reviews were helpful or not. You can also ask other AppVerse members to provide a review for any app you’re interested in. This social interaction really ups the accountability of everybody in the app store, which delivers reviews that are REALLY HELPFUL. When you tap into the power of AppVerse, that frustration and uncertainty are gone. You can even review apps that are not available in our CrackBerry App Store (ie. it’s in App World and not the CrackBerry App Store catalog yet).

It’s still early days, so if you find any bugs or have any ideas for new features you’d like to see implemented, be sure to drop us a comment. We already have some more features planned for rollout in the weeks ahead, but take a browse around and you’ll see it’s already off to a great start. Not sure where to begin? Try checking out the AppVerse profiles of me and our other writers and forums moderators here on CrackBerry at the link below.

Leaked OS 6.0.0.461 for the BlackBerry Bold 9780

Leaked OS 6.0.0.461 for the BlackBerry Bold 9780

Well happy President’s Day, let’s celebrate with a leaked OS for the BlackBerry Bold 9780! OS 6.0.0.461 appeared in the CrackBerry forums a bit ago, thanks to ALKi3. Be sure to let us know in the comments below what you think of it if you install it, and don’t forget to do a backup of your device, just in case.

*OS Disclaimer – Please Read: Keep in mind this is NOT an official release and as such is not supported by RIM or your Carrier. If you choose to install, do so at your own risk and only if you’re comfortable in the process of upgrading and downgrading your device software. It is quite normal during operating system development for certain features to be crippled or disabled while others are tested, and these beta builds often reflect that. They are not always better. Depending on your BlackBerry comfort level, it may be best for you to wait for community feedback on a build before deciding to download and install for yourself or simply wait for the next official release. If you require support, you will find it in our CrackBerry forums via our extremely knowledgeable community base – do not contact your carrier or RIM for Beta OS technical support (their first course of action will be to advise you to downgrade to a supported OS). *

Live Photos of the BlackBerry Bold Touch (montana) Emerge!

BlackBerry Bold Touch
Bold 9700 (left) vs. the new BlackBerry Bold Touch (right)

Gotta love it when a plan comes together! Following up on the 2011 BlackBerry Smartphone Roadmap leaks of January, we’re starting to see these devices take shape for REALZ in February. We saw the monaco/Storm 3 show up on video yesterday, and now today we’re looking at live photos of the BlackBerry Bold Touch, which currently goes by the codename dakota. As you can tell, the newest Bold (pictured above on the right) looks more like the original Bold 9000 from the front than the smaller Bold 9700/9780 we’re currently used to. I can’t wait to pound out emails and BBMs on the Bold Touch’s keyboard… that is the Cadillac of smartphone keyboards right there. As for what the Bold Touch is packing inside, here’s the specs as they have been rumored to date:

  • Dimensions: 115 x 66 x 10.5mm
  • Radio: Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE; Tri Band UMTS
  • Display: 2.8" diagonol – VGA 640 x 480, resolution 287dpi
  • Camera: 5mp – Flash – Image Stabilization – HD Recording (720p)
  • Navigation: Capacitive Touch, Optical Trackpad
  • Keypad: Wide QWERTY – Physical Send, End, Escape, Menu, Right Side Convenience Key, Volume Control
  • Memory: 8GB – 768MB RAM – up to 32GB MicroSd Card
  • WiFi: 2.4 GHZ b/g/n – 5GHz a/n – Mobile Hotspot
  • Connectivity: Micro USB – Bluetooth – NFC
  • Sensors: Magnetometer – Accelerometer – Proximity

Lots more photos after the break, so check them out! You don’t want to miss the one where you see that the trim around the Bold Touch’s keypad LIGHTS UP!!! Who’s waiting on this one?? I know I am!

CrackBerry Podcast 064: Looking Back on a week of BlackBerry Mobile World Congress 2011 News!

 CrackBerry.com Podcast

Mobile World Congress 2011 is now over, and it helped to deliver a bunch of news and interesting posts to the CrackBerry blogs this week (click here to see MWC related posts). More PlayBooks were announced (I’m still waiting for the WiFi only one!), NFC on upcoming BlackBerry Smartphones got official, and we saw a bunch more demos of apps running on the BlackBerry PlayBook. We dive into all of that and more on this episode, so sit back and listen to Adam, Bla1ze, Craig, Joseph and myself talk about BlackBerry and a bunch of other things too. Disclaimer: In our excitement we may have dropped a few F Bombs on this one that we were too lazy to edit out. Listen at your discretion. All in all, it turned out to be a pretty fun show.

CrackBerry LIVE Podcast: Ok ok… so we’re finally seriously for real thinking about trying to record these podcasts live like our friends at TiPb.com and AndroidCentral.com do. We’d go for audio only, with a chat room on the blogs, so you can chat with us when we record. Vote on the poll above to let us know what you’d prefer to us do… and sound off in the comments if you have anything specific to ad. Enjoy the show!
