Finally!! It’s been just over six weeks since our last podcast (my bad – I blame CB Redesign as soaking up all my time), which means we cover a lot of good stuff in this show. While my written BlackBerry Bold 9780 review will be hitting the blogs soon (Monday, don’t miss it!), in the mean time you can listen to our verbal review. We dive into this discussion just a few minutes in. From there, we cover a bunch of other BlackBerry talk of late, including the Kik craziness, BlackBerry Style and Pearl 3G user impressions, and some of the latest rumors for things to come in 2011. Unfortunately Craig couldn’t make this one as we recorded during the day, but we had CrackBerry Idol runner-up Joseph Holder fill in.
We hope you enjoy episode 60. And we PROMISE to be back before the end of 2010 with our super duper Best of 2010 year end show!

Not sure what to get the person who already has too much for Christmas this year? You may want to check out the Exclusive Limited Edition Bill Amberg BlackBerry Bold 9780 collection, available from Selfridges this December. Here’s the official word on them:
To celebrate the launch of the BlackBerry Bold 9780 luxury leather designer Bill Amberg has created a BlackBerry collection which will be sold exclusively at Selfridges London from 1 December.
The 60 limited edition Bill Amberg sets, priced at £1000 each, include a BlackBerry Bold 9780, a backplate and sleek matching leather case and are available in six unique colour ways – yellow on black, orange on black, red on black, pink on white, blue on white and green on white.
To get hold of an iconic BlackBerry Bold 9780 designed by Bill Amberg head to the Technology Hall on the Lower Ground Floor from 1 December.
I gotta say, as much as I’m a sucker for the notion of limited edition swiss mechanical watches, somehow the concept of seeing 1/10 or 5/10 on the back of a smartphone doesn’t quite yield the same sort of emotion for me. The two-tone battery doors are pretty hawt though. It would be nice to see an accessory manufacturer do up something similar in that $15 – $30 price range. More info and images at the link below. Thanks to Dave for sending this in!

If you’ve been patiently waiting for the next BlackBerry Bold 9700 leak, today is the day. OS 6.0.0.358 is now available for download in it’s unofficial form. Many users are already running the previously leaked BlackBerry 6 for their Bold 9700 so this, is hopefully a better release than that one. Be sure to back up your data folks and let us know whats good in the forums or in the comments.
*OS Disclaimer – Please Read: Keep in mind this is NOT an official release and as such is not supported by RIM or your Carrier. If you choose to install, do so at your own risk and only if you’re comfortable in the process of upgrading and downgrading your device software. It is quite normal during operating system development for certain features to be crippled or disabled while others are tested, and these beta builds often reflect that. They are not always better. Depending on your BlackBerry comfort level, it may be best for you to wait for community feedback on a build before deciding to download and install for yourself or simply wait for the next official release. If you require support, you will find it in our CrackBerry forums via our extremely knowledgeable community base – do not contact your carrier or RIM for Beta OS technical support (their first course of action will be to advise you to downgrade to a supported OS). *

If you’ve been been waiting for the BlackBerry Bold 9780 to hit a US carrier then tonight is the night. T-Mobile has now posted up the BlackBerry Bold 9780 in black and white. $129.99 with a new 2 year contract and it’s all yours. if retail price is more your style and you like not having a contract then you’ll be looking at $449.99 as your final damage. Some areas are still showing the device as back ordered but, other areas show it as available. Our guess is that it’s still filtering through the site so if your zip isn’t showing it as available yet, it will be shortly.

It really hasn’t been a secret that the white BlackBerry Torch and BlackBerry Bold 9780 were set to come to Rogers at some point. With the holiday season upon us it only makes sense that Rogers would offer up the devices. Possibly even as part of a holiday promotion despite having just raised the pricing on the BlackBerry Torch. But, just in case you needed some visual confirmation of their arrival the above image should suffice. The in store dummy units have arrived and the actual devices are expected to follow along shortly. I’m holding out for the red BlackBerry Torch but would gladly take one of those white BlackBerry Bold 9780s right now.

We’ve known for quite some time now that Virgin Mobile was all geared up to release the BlackBerry Bold 9780 at some point. While the exact date still evades us, Best Buy has once again posted up devices even before the carriers and this time they’ve also outted something that was rumored but never really confirmed. As you can tell from the above pic, Virgin Mobile will be releasing the BlackBerry Bold 9780 in white whenever they decide to actually make it available and looks like it will be unbranded as well just like the Bell version (no carrier logo). Pricing falls in line with the rest of the carriers when it comes to no contract pricing ($499.99) but using their SuperTab option you can get the BlackBerry Bold 9780 for $129.99. Thanks Borna!

Officially announced by Research In Motion (see press release) on Oct. 27th that it would be rolling out worldwide in the month of November, the BlackBerry Bold 9780 is beginning to hit carriers around the world. My local Rogers store go them in stock today, so I rushed out to grab one and immediately put it down on the good ‘ole green CrackBerry review table for a closer look. You can check out the video above for the ritual unboxing as well as some quick hardware comparisons to other BlackBerry device models and a look at BlackBerry 6.
As a one year refresh device compared to the BlackBerry Bold 9700, the BlackBerry 9780 isn’t *that* much different. Visually, the black color version is more blacked-out around the edges. Inside, the memory is doubled up to 512MB of flash memory and the camera moves up from 3.2 to 5 megapixels. The chipset is updated to the same that is used in the Torch and Pearl 3G, which means it gets Wi-Fi N and has slightly better video recording resolution than the 9700. Last but not least, the Bold 9780 ships with BlackBerry 6 preloaded.
So while it may not be all that different from the BlackBerry Bold 9700, the 9700 was and still is a pretty awesome device and the 9780 simply improves upon. Some initial thoughts:
- Look/Feel - I like the dark look, and like the Bold 9700 it’s a great feeling phone in hand.
- Performance - It’s FAST. BlackBerry 6 feels pretty darn snappy on the 9780. It’s the fastest BB6 experience I’ve felt to date. From scrolling through the OS to snapping photos, it’s quick.
- Battery Life - I haven’t tested it yet obviously, but I’m assuming it’s going to rock
I think I called the BlackBerry Bold 9700 the "pinnacle of the traditional" BlackBerry experience, so really, I guess the BlackBerry Bold 9780 is the "NEW Pinnacle of the traditional BlackBerry experience." I’d really like to RIM add a touchscreen to this form factor and somehow make the screen just a little bit bigger, but all in all if you’re a heavy communicator and get stuff done quick kind of person, the BlackBerry Bold 9780 is likely the BlackBerry for you. Stay tuned for the full the review!

The BlackBerry Bold 9780 is slowly making it’s way through Canadian carriers. If you’re a Rogers customer you can now head on over to the Rogers website and place your order for the BlackBerry Bold 9780. One thing to note though is that Rogers doesn’t seem to be feeling any pressure as of yet from TELUS regarding their pricing. The TELUS version will only set you back $99 while the Rogers version will cost you $149.99 both on 3-year contracts. However, if contracts aren’t your thing both carriers have the device available for $499 sans contract.

Telus looks to be the first carrier to get the Bold 9780 out for public comsumption. The device is now listed in their online store (in some areas) and is available for purchase. The BlackBerry Bold 9780 will run you $99 on a 3 year term, $399 on a 2 year term, $449 for 1 year or $499 no term. The device sports many upgrades over the Bold 9700 including BlackBerry OS 6, a 624 MHz processor, an updated 5MP camera, 512mb flash memory and much more. You can pick up one via Telus online, but we have yet to confirm if the device is available for purchase in stores.

Best Buy has issues with keeping secrets apparently. First, they were the ones to out the Rogers, Virgin and Bell BlackBerry Bold 9780 pricing and now, we have courtesy of them the TELUS pricing. Good news though for TELUS fans wanting the BlackBerry Bold 9780. TELUS will be offering their version for a mere $99 on a 3-year contract with the no term pricing set at $499.99. They aren’t ready to be ordered or even picked up in store yet but as we all know, when the ads go up it’s a clear indication launch is close. Thanks Jamie!

If you live in Canada and have been waiting for the BlackBerry Bold 9780 to arrive it might be now getting a little frustrating. While the device has already been officially announced, the rumored launch dates thus far have not really come through with delays having already been confirmed.
Newest rumor? November 9th will be launch day across Bell, Rogers, Virgin Mobile and possibly even TELUS. One thing that seems pretty much a lock though is the pricing according to Best Buy and the Rogers Q4 roadmap. Each carrier, with the exception of TELUS was featured in the above ad as listing the device for $149.99 on a new 3-year contract.

Any bets on what kind of BlackBerry we’ll see next from Research In Motion?!
On the last RIM earnings call, Co-CEO Jim Balsillie said we’d see some "acceleration" from RIM towards the end of the calendar year. After what was an extremely quiet start of 2010 on the new BlackBerry front, over the last few months RIM has pushed out and/or announced a bunch of new devices onto the market. Along with BlackBerry 6, we saw the Pearl 3G and Bold 9650 get announced at WES. The Curve 3Gs followed suit as did the BlackBerry Torch. And now in what felt like rapid succession, the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet got announced as did the BlackBerry Style and BlackBerry Bold 9780. With all of the above now announced and/or out on the market, our CrackBerry minds can’t help but wonder What’s Next??

There is no doubt that Verizon’s preperations for a BlackBerry 6 for numerous devices is well underway. BlackBerry applications are randomly being updated, users are reporting some strange things happening with their PTT (push to talk) modules and well, we’ve already got a BlackBerry 6 leak for the Bold 9650 and Curve 3G anyways.
The most recent nod to the fact that launch is close could be the Verizon rebate forms which have mysteriously added two new SKU’s for the BlackBerry Bold 9650. While it’s not confirmation, it’s speculated that the new SKU’s are for the BlackBerry 6 preloaded versions of the BlackBerry Bold 9650. Just release it already, it’s not like it’s a huge secret any more Verizon. Your network already has many users running it.

With the official announcement from Research In Motion of the BlackBerry Bold 9780′s existence comes the existence of the dummy devices that have been sent out to retailers. While Rogers has already indeed stepped up to the plate and confirmed they will be releasing the device, they forgot to include an actual date or pricing. In any event, we know from history that once dummy devices arrive launch typically follows shortly after. Pricing is of course still unknown but, we don’t expect it to be any more then $150 on a new 3 yr contract.

As for the BIG question of WHEN CAN I GET ONE? the good news is it’ll start launching on carriers around the world next month. Read the press release below and keep it locked to CrackBerry for more!

T-Mobile is ramping up for their BlackBerry Bold 9780 launch. While the date is tentative and subject to change the documentation clearly shows November 17th as the expected date. It’s stil rather odd that Reseach In Motion has made no mention of the device officially with launch expected across all GSM carriers next month. Kinda makes you wonder if one day you’ll just walk into your carrier and the 9700 will no longer exist and the BlackBerry Bold 9780 will just quietly show up. The pricing for the BlackBerry Bold 9780 on Vodafone UK has been known for a while but, as a reminder for those who may have missed it. Vodafone UK will be giving away the BlackBerry Bold 9780 on tariffs starting at £35/pm (24 months) but if you want no contract pricing, you’ll be looking at £400. One thing though that was only rumored, was that Vodafone may or may not be offering more than one color. We now know for sure that the device will come in white and black when it launches and that it will launch with OS 6.0.0.294 as that was the OS officially approved by Vodafone UK. A red BlackBerry Bold 9780? At first glance it looks like it but, something just doesn’t look right. It is for certain a BlackBerry Bold 9780 as the OS screen is showing in the ad but, that red just looks like it’s after market parts. Of course, I could be totally wrong and we could end up seeing a BlackBerry Bold 9780 come in a variation of colors. We already know that the red BlackBerry Torch is out there so a red 9780 certainly is plausible. The ad indicates that it is a Rogers device but it has no branding on it. The asking price? $975 and it’s all yours. In a related rumor, we’re also hearing that 11/03/10 will be the release date for the T-Mobile BlackBerry Bold 9780 but, nothing confirmed one that one. Some Rogers customers may have known this was coming considering previously leaked OS’ opened up the ability on the devices but now, we have the information coming to us in a semi official form. Rogers, will soon be pushing a software update out for the BlackBerry Bold 9700 and BlackBerry Curve 3G that will enable UMA access on both of those devices. With UMA now being enabled, both devices will work for WiFi calling provided you have the proper TalkSpot plan from Rogers. Pretty cool but, one has to wonder why the change of heart?

While I was going through my friends list on livejournal, I came across a link to this wonderful post about a father and son learning lessons while watching Batman: The Brave & the Bold on Cartoon network.
My twins, age eleven, were also touched by the end of the two-part episode with Starro — though unlike the writer of the article, I did allow my twins to watch the earlier episode that featured the death of Batman’s parents. It’s my youngest daughter’s favorite episode. It’s possible that she might not have been ready for it at age five, but it’s hard to know.
B'wana Beast on Batman: The Brave and the Bold
I did add one other lesson to my own kids. B’wana Beast has a somewhat problematic name, given “b’wana”’s association with the white colonization of Africa, though the character himself is perfectly fine in Batman. Being aware of the issues with the name doesn’t take away from the power of the story but I took the chance to explain to my twins why the name is problematic.

With the BlackBerry Torch 9800 well and truly available in the UK, Vodafone looks set to releasing another BlackBerry in the very near future. The BlackBerry Bold 9780 tariff prices have just been outed so we should expect to see them in stores soon. We haven’t even seen a release day of any kind for the 9780, so having the prices out and about is pretty crazy.
We know already that the Bold 9780 is a refreshed Bold 9700 with more memory and 5MP camera in the same shell so it’s safe to say that the tariffs would be very similar to the 9700. Here’s the tariff details currently known:
- 900 minutes (anytime/network)
- Unlimited texts
- 500mb of data
- BIS included
- £35/pm (24 months) – device free on this plan
- £40/pm (18 months) – device free on this plan
Will you holding out to get your hands on the Bold 9780? I am curious to know if any 9700 owners will upgrade or just wait for BB6 to be available.
