Take Note, WritePad Brings Stylus Optimized Handwriting to any Honeycomb Tablet.

When HTC released the Flyer tablet, I’ll admit, I was a bit jealous of its Scribe technology and writing capability sufficient so, that I went out and bought a capacitive stylus to use with my own Xoom tablet. Surely the Xoom’s bigger screen would be much better for writing anyway, but to my dismay, there weren’t a lot of apps for me to write with. Those that did exist weren’t precisely as useful  or smooth searching as what the Flyer was touting.

Weeks later, nonetheless, XDA forum member Transceiver, has made my pen buy a worthy investment. Transceiver is the creator of an app still in beta known as WritePad, although that name will likely alter to some degree simply because an app with that name already exists in the Android Marketplace.

Although originally designed for the Asus Eee Pad Transformer running three.two, I’ve identified the app have a silky smooth writing encounter on my Xoom as nicely.

Presently the app attributes

  • No lag and no jitter among the stylus movement and the screen response.
  • Intelligent palm detection – only records the writing from your stylus (appropriate handed only for now).
  • Export page and notebook – share the page as a PNG file, or export the whole thing as a ZIP file to your Dropbox or Gmail account.
  • Paper sorts – comes with 4 familiar paper kinds such as White, Legal, Composition, &amp Engineer (Graph Paper)
  • Stylus calibration – instead of drawing where the stylus touches the screen, it will draw where you ‘think’ the stylus tip is which is great for thicker tip styluses.

If you are a tablet owner, I highly encourage checking this app out. Transceiver is interested in having different types of tablets beta test the app, so go grab it from the application forum and leave him your feedback.

Autodesk who is best known for their awesome software program AUTOCAD has designed a sketchbook app that has been out for over a year on the iPad. Export to Photoshop support is included with the app.

The HTC Flyer was the first tablet to ship with a stylus and if reports are right from numerous sources, there might be further tablets in the future that also release with the stylus accessory.  It would be wise for Autodesk to offer the support for theses stylus’s as that tool could support them gain prominence in the Android world.  There are two choice obtainable on the market place for this tool, a free attempt-just before-you-obtain app which is not as feature rich  and the pro version which will be offered for $ 5.00.

Shazam Update Now Brings You Music Previews And More!

I never would have thought in a million years that Shazam would be one of the most used apps in my app arsenal.  Yet, I find myself using the application almost daily.  I have a long commute to work and often come across a new tune that quickly catches my interest.  The days of hearing an awesome beat and wondering where it comes from are over.  In seconds I can whip my smartphone out and tap the huge Shazam button, knowing the artist and album instantly.  Well, Shazam is back at it again improving their application to give you the best possible experience when it comes to music searching and discovery.  So what’s new in their latest update?  Plenty.

For starters, and in addition to a very slight and light UI tweak, they now offer “music previews”.  A small play button has been added for you to check out a 30 sec preview for the tune of interest.  The preview works for tagged songs, browsing history, your friend’s tags and even in the Tag Chart and recommendations section of the app.  In addition, they have improved the tag results page, offering bigger and better cover art for your convenience.  Furthermore, you can now track the location of all your tagged songs.  If you haven’t tried Shazam for yourself, you can check out the app here on our apps database and here for the Shazam Encore application which will run you $ 5 bucks and offers you more goodies under the hood.  You can also snag the download on the Android Market here and here.  As always, feel free to let us know what you think in the comments below.

More Honeycomb apps are always a good thing, right? This time, the folks at Zinio have brought us a hardware-accelerated application optimized for performance on Honeycomb and Tegra 2. The company says they have 100,000 magazines from 4,200 different publishers in all types of languages and available to purchase in a variety of currencies.

Microsoft gets paid, Android brings in more dough than Windows Phone

This morning a report was released stating that Android puts more money in Microsoft’s bank than Windows phone. HTC, which runs Android on a number of its devices is required to pay Microsoft, $ 5 per unit sold, due to an out of court settlements involving patent violation. That being said, if HTC sells around 30 million devices, that would mean they would be paying Microsoft a grand total of (I’m sure our reader can do the math) $ 150 million. Now that’s a good chunk of cash just from HTC that’s going straight to company that owns the mobile platform, Windows Phone.

Now if you take the above information that was released by Citi analyst Walter Pritchard and compare it to Window Phone’s position, Android seems to be the money maker. Microsoft’s information says that Windows Phone has sold 2 million licenses. So at $ 15 a license, that would total to $ 30 million. Not quite the cash cow that Android seems to be.

Microsoft is making truck loads of cash from HTC, so it only make sense they would go after all the other Android device manufacturers, looking for a per unit fee, so as to get a cut of the profits across the board, as also reported by Walter Pritchard.

XDA Dev Brings “Modern” Facebook Theme to Android

The mod community over at XDA loves very few things more than customizing their devices. Hacks, mods, ROMs, skins…redesigning, overclocking, customizing launchers, creating new icons…this is what the dev community is all about, and the main thing that Android gets “oh so right.” XDA member adam2010 has brought a couple of new themes for the Android Facebook app that might interest you. One gives it a Windows Phone 7 feel (perfect if you run the WP7 Launcher), and the other two are considered “modern” themes, with a pretty slick look. Route 66 Brings Augmented Reality To Your GPS Navigation

Route 66, at MWC revealed their new augmented reality overlay for their map system for Android devices.  Dubbed ROUTE 66 Maps + Navigation, the app uses TomTom’s software to get you to your favorite destination, whether in a vehicle or on foot.  In addition to your standard features for mobile navigation applications such as 2D and 3D views, endless list of POI’s and weather, ROUTE 66 has added a new twist to the mix, separating themselves from the competition.

You can activate what is called the “follow me” option on your smartphone or tablet and the app will generate an augmented reality feature using your camera’s lens.  In addition to this, it will place a virtual car in front of you to follow to your destination.  Now, that’s just plain o’l cool.  Indicator lights go off to inform you when to turn.

No word yet as to when the app will be available, but we’re told “soon”.  The application will be offered free with options to upgrade (for a fee of course) to add turn-by-turn navigation and more.  ROUTE 66 is also giving users a free 30 days just for downloading the app.  I can’t wait to try this on my Galaxy Tablet.  Let us know what you think in the comments below.

YourVersion brings news app optimized for Android Tablets

yourversion

YourVersion app users on Android smartphones can now have the same functionailty on your Android tablet devices as well, now that YourVersion has optimized their news reader app for tablet size screen resolution. YourVersion is totally free and brings breaking news, blogs and tweets right to your tablet or smartphone in a slick, easy to navigate interface.

The app makes it easy for you to integrate your social networking sites such as Twitter and facebook, while allowing you to easily share or blog interesting news articles to others. It can be seen as just another news reader, but they’ve paid specific attention to how the app displays on larger screens, making this a better user experience overall, rather than a regular reader app originally made for smaller screens, and stretched to fit a tablet size screen.

The app has a minimum resolution requirement of 1024×600 (same as Samsung Galaxy Tab). For tablet devices with smaller resolutions however, users are encouraged to still use the smartphone version of the app, which you can find here. Requires Android 2.1 and up.

Dev Community Brings Froyo to Milestone XT720

When we say “Dev Community, ” we usually mean XDA-Developers, and this case is no exception.  The developers over at XDA have once again done something that the manufacturer hasn’t — brought Android 2.2 to the Motorola Milestone XT720.  User Dexter_nlb has posted a ROM that reportedly has very few issues functioning as a stable Froyo ROM. Given that Motorola themselves proclaimed this phone will remain stuck with Eclair as the OS, we’re extra happy to see this coming together from the developer community.

Twitter 2.0 Brings UI Change And Rids The Menu Page, Now Available For Download In The Market.

Twitter has gotten itself a little update recently.  The update brings you a noticeable UI tweak of sorts along with several other gladly welcomed functionality.  For starters, the icon logo has been replaced from the teal “T” to a teal bird icon in order to better suit the application.  The second thing you’ll notice is the absence of the menu screen.  Twitter has done away with it, launching you directly into your timeline after tapping the app’s icon.   The next thing you’ll notice is that the UI has been completely revamped.  Scrolling my timeline was much faster and smoother than before, lacking any choppiness or lag.  Other noticeable points include a new search system with the ability to search the contacts in your device’s address book.  In addition, you can also view tweets and trends without actually having to sign into your account.  Not too shabby if you ask me.  I’m relieved at how Twitter has moved away from the cute fuzziness of the previous version to the newer streamlined and functional interface.  If you’re ready to make the change, then head on over to our apps database or check it out on the Android Market and give it a go.  And don’t forget to let us know what you think about it in the comments below.

Twitter for Android Updated, Brings New Look, Universal Search

We told you earlier today about Twitter for Android, version 2.0. Well, said release is now available. The new Twitter for Android brings a few new features, such as:

  • You can now use Twitter without signing in. For example, a user can see trends, browse interests, and even see suggested users in different categories.
  • The UI has gotten some changes as well. There’s now a bar at the top, where users can see tweets, mentions, direct messages, and lists.
  • In addition, the user can now see retweets in their mentions column.
  • Universal search is also introduced in this version
  • Finally, users can now scan through their address book and see which of their friends (that are “discoverable”) are on Twitter

I, for one, havent gotten the opportunity to check out the new version, but judging from the screenshots on Twitter’s blog, and the features listed above, it sounds pretty awesome. Anyone installed the updated version of Twitter for Android yet? Give us your thoughts in the comments below!

CyanogenMod 7 Brings Gingerbread to the Galaxy Tab

This image has no alt text

Though CyanogenMod 7 has been running around as nightly builds for various handsets for the past few weeks, today we can finally relax and take peace in knowing that a public beta is now also available for the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Regardless of if sales are “small” or “smooth” and oblivious to a return rate that may be below 2 percent or as high as 15 percent, the ROM for rooted tabs brings Android 2.3 Gingerbread to the 7-inch slate.

As it is a beta, you install at your own risk. It isn’t 100 percent functional. Of course, as stated previously, you will need root, but you will also need to own a tab that meets the following criteria: “GSM (Euro, US ATT/TMO tabs, with JJ4 or other unprotected bootloaders that can run Euro ROMs and P1_add_hidden partitioning.” More info at the source link below.

TweetCaster 2.6 brings Zip-it feature – gets rid of unwanted tweets from follows

tweetcaster-26

Sometimes it’s very difficult to get the news or information you want out of Twitter, especially when you’re following hundreds of people or groups. Really, that much information just makes you want to skim, missing alot of content that you may, or may not find interesting. So how do you get rid of the “junk” you know you don’t care about without having to “unfollow” someone or groups?

TweetCaster has thought of that as well. The new feature of TweetCaster (version 2.6) now allows you to mute user, trend (#hashtag) or keyword. This can drastically reduce the amount of “junk” you may get in your feeds and timelines, thus making it easier to digest all that information coming to you from your follows.

Here’s a list of other features currently in TweetCaster for Android;

  • Zip It – zip annoying tweeters or trends from your timeline without unfollowing
  • Instapaper support – Save long stories to Instapaper to read later
  • Color code tweets – Choose a custom color for your tweets and @replies
  • Simultaneously post to Twitter and Facebook
  • Multiple Twitter account support
  • Multiple widgets
  • Retweet with or without comment
  • Twitlonger service
  • Conversation thread view
  • Twitter lists
  • Customized Twitter notifications

There is a Free version and a “pro” version for $3.99. the only difference is that the paid version has no ads. Take that for what you find it worth. Regardless, the “Zip-it” feature now in 2.6 is worth a try on your Android device. Scan the QR below, or click here for more information from our Apps database.
