The Android market has a ton of ridiculously cool, highly customizable apps. But sometimes, for the TRULY customizable capabilities, you have to turn to the third-party devs working on the customizable apps. To that end, we present to you two very powerful apps created by XDA-Developers.
Up first, ykk_five has created an app that allows you to see not only the time your texts were received, but the time they were actually sent. Follow the steps in the first source article, and you’ll have some help seeing when texts were sent, not just when they were received.
Equally cool, KuRouZu has developed an app that will let you pull from many sources like Megavideo and will stream TV shows and other random video to your Android device. The UI is apparently very intuitive, although it requires Froyo with Flash Player 10.1.

Those of us Nokia fans in the US have been bummed out with all of the overseas talk of Ovi Music and Spotify. We do have Mobbler (Last.fm support) for the Nokia N8, but it is always good to have options. On my Android, iOS, and Windows Phone 7 devices I have been using the excellent Slacker Radio service and rather excited to reveal that Slacker is coming to Symbian^3 in February. Yes, us Nokia N8 owners in the US will finally get the ability to use Slacker Radio on our devices.
The Slacker Radio for Nokia client will support the following features:
- Music library featuring millions of songs
- High-quality stereo playback from any available wireless connection
- Create custom artist stations based on artists or songs
- Over 130 professionally programmed and customizable genre stations
- View artist biographies and photos
- View album art and read reviews
- Rate songs as favorites
- Ban songs and artists from stations
The Slacker Radio application will be available for free in February. It was developed using the Qt application development framework and should run on all Symbian^3 devices.
It is encouraging to see Slacker coming to Symbian and now I have my hopes set on Amazon or Barnes & Noble bringing their ebook clients to Symbian too.

title="Outfit7 iPhone Apps" href="http://outfit7.com/" target="_blank">Outfit7. When you open the app it’s just you and the cartoon character, face to face. Speak, and the character will repeat what you say—in a distorted voice, of course. Touch buttons to manipulate the character, or even hit record to make a customized greeting to send to your friends.
While it’s much like the others,
title="Talking Santa for iPhone on the iTunes App Store" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/talking-santa-for-iphone/id398853199?mt=8&partnerId=30&siteID=saW0nB/fQ6o" target="_blank">Talking Santa for iPhone is probably the best one yet. Since it’s for a specific holiday, the ability to generate and share greeting cards suddenly makes a lot of sense. Santa is also surrounded by all the holiday accouterments you’d expect: a snowman, a big bag of gifts, a sleigh with a tray of cookies and a glass of milk.
But there’s lots you won’t expect.

As an Android owner, I am always very pleased to see some of the best iPhone apps find their way to the Android platform. A few months back, we saw iGloLEDset — the LED lights that are wifi-enabled and controllable from an iPhone app. Assuming you’re willing and able to spend the $300 on the light string, you can now use your Android to phone to program the lights, or even change them in real-time. Check out the video below, and leave us your thoughts in the comments.

What a pleasant surprise on this Tuesday afternoon. Facebook just updated to version 1.5 and with it comes real, live Facebook chat to the Android app. Still plenty that could be better with the Android implementation of the world’s biggest social network, but we’ll take what they give us. Now, time to dig in and see what the FB team has given us…

Evernote for Android has been updated to version 2.5 today and it brings with it a lot of great new features. The one they seem to be most excited for is advanced search. You’ll be able to “construct complex searches” using tags, notebooks, attributes, location, and dates. Pretty much, if you have OCD and you’ve been tagging your notes a certain way (and you have a lot of them), you’ll have an easier time finding them. You can also save searches so it’s simple to re-execute queries in the future.
They’ve also added support for to-do check boxes – a feature prominent in the desktop version of Evernote. To-do check boxes sound as simple as they are: you are able to treat your notes as if they are to-do lists. They’ve mentioned that you can now check and uncheck items in the app, but no word was given on being able to do this from within the app. (I’d check myself, but my phone is currently chasing a tornado.)
For more information on what to expect from today’s update, hit up Evernote’s blog or do yourself a favor and just find it in the Android market now.

With front-facing cameras coming on more devices, Tango Video Calls have been trying to support them all. In the previous update, Tango addressed support for Samsung Galaxy S devices and fixed a bug with the HTC Evo 4G and with this update version 1.4.4937, Tango Video Calls brings the following:
- Support for more countries
- Congo
- Ecuador
- El Salvador
- Guatemala
- Oman
- Panama
- Qatar
- Tango ringtone now adjustable with ringer volume
- Automatic population of country code when registering
- Fixes for Samsung Intercept and T-mobile’s myTouch 4G
- Other amazing bug fixes
This looks like a pretty big update, so if you haven’t given Tango Video Calls a try yet, we recommend that you give it a chance and be sure to let us know in the comments how you like it compared to Qik or Fring!

Nike+ GPS is a study in appropriate technology. The first upgrade that long-time users of the Nike+ GPS app will notice is that the iPhone is now doing what the iPhone has been able to do for a long time: tell where you are. Runners tend not to want things in their shoes other than their feet and socks. Nike initially ignored this, insisting that you have a gizmo in your shoe talking to satellites and then telling your iPhone about it second-hand. Now your iPhone talks to the satellites and then talks to you.
Nike also allows your iPhone to convey motivational messages from celebrity jocks. Some users find this motivating, I suppose. Others feel that Lance Armstrong may not, in fact, be impressed in their newfound ability to run seven miles, and therefore find it annoying. Fortunately, you can also rely on a variety of computer voices to give you motivational messages. Well, that’s the twenty-first century for ya: anybody but someone you know is supposed to be your social network, right? (…)

Google doesn’t seem to rest when it comes to continually updating their mobile version of Maps for Android. Another new update is out bringing Maps to version 4.6 and refining the way you find nearby places and friends.

You will find that Place pages in the mobile app have been updated to reflect recent design changes to the dektop version of the service. Reviews are now organized between web reviews such as those from Yelp and Zagat and reviews posted by others using Google Maps.

You will also find new filters for search results. What used to only be sorted by distance and rating can now be filtered by what’s open, which neighborhood and establishment is located in, and also by related searches.
And for those using Maps 4.6 on and Android 2.2 device the experimental “real-time updating” option can be be enabled for Latitude users, providing quicker updating of location information.
Most people should be prompted to install the update on their handset, but you can always go to the Android Market to locate the latest version as well.

Navigon MobileNavigator USA has finally hit the Android market today and it’s about time. We first got a peek of the navigation app back in January when it was shown off at CES, so it took nearly 11 months before we got a chance to get our hands on it.
Aside from the standard text-to-speech and turn-by-turn directions, MobileNavigator brings a neat feature called Reality View Pro mode that shows realistic 3D views of the street signs and a new Reality Scanner mode which offers an augmented overlay with additional info at what you are looking at nearby. Pretty slick.
The app is available today and is on sale for $39 for the next 2 weeks. After that, the price climbs to $59. If you plan on picking it up, you might want to hop on wifi as the app contains full map data for the U.S. and will require 1.5GB of space.

Google’s Voice application has just been updated to version 0.4.2.8 and brings with it the ability to search your voicemail transcripts and text messages. Searching text messages is nothing too exciting, but searching transcripts should do well to make a lot of people happy. (That’s if you can even get Google Voice to accurately transcribe voicemails to begin with.) Head on over to the Android market to download the update now.

We all have them; those days you just don’t want to make anything or go anywhere. Food delivery to the rescue! Unfortunately for me, I live in a delivery dead zone where my options are limited to just a few pizza places.
A dozen other cities are a bit luckier however, as online food delivery service GrubHub has recently brought food ordering to the Android Market. While their app is still in beta, it’s a decent start; you can search what’s available by location or food type, and all but two cities list more than 100 restaurants to choose from.
Here are the cities currently signed up with GrubHub:
- Boston
- Boulder
- Chicago
- Denver
- Los Angeles
- New York
- Philadelphia
- Oakland
- Portland
- San Diego
- San Francisco
- Seattle
- Washington DC
In addition to menu listings, GrubHub lets you order via the app or call, as well as star ratings and coupons. If you want to get the app, click here or scan the QR code.

Posted on 01 October 2010. Tags: Android, brings, Crackle, Movie, streaming

It would seem the streaming video service Crackle has stealthily released their app to the Android Market without any fanfare. That’s okay, we’re still excited about it. Much of what can be watched through the website can also be viewed on the app; there is a big BUT to this however. While everything can be viewed on your Android device, only certain titles are viewable for free, the rest can only be viewed after purchasing a subscription for $4.99. The upside is that you can subscribe for as little as one month, plenty of time to decide if it’s worth it.
For a first version, it’s a pretty decent app. The video quality wasn’t too bad on my Nexus One, though the more action-intense scenes did get a bit pixelated. There were a couple issues I found to be more problematic. The first being there is no search feature, a glaring oversight for the type of service Crackle provides. The other big issue, which is more of an annoyance than anything, is that movies arenot be saved on your phone. This mean if you start watching a movie and have to stop, when you come back to it, the film will start from the beginning. Hopefully these issues will be corrected in later versions.
Overall though, Crackle isn’t a bad option if you need some entertainment. You can download the app HERE from your Android device, or scan the code below.

We haven’t seen much about MeeGo here at Nokia World, but some encouraging news comes from Engadget that Mr. Peter Skillman, former Palm Design VP, has been hired on as part of the MeeGo team. Palm’s webOS is a very good mobile operating system so it is encouraging to see Nokia bring someone with Peter’s skills to the team. Sorry about that Dieter, I honestly still do with webOS the best of luck.
I understand that the focus at Nokia World is on the mass market and Symbian, but as a Nokia fan I sure would like to have heard more about MeeGo. I am thinking we may not see a device launch in 2010, but after seeing how good the new N8, E7, C6, and C7 are with Symbian^3 I think that Nokia will do just fine this holiday season.
