Guess who finally won a contest? Yes, I have an E7 on the way

Remember that Nokia Care US video tip contest I mentioned a couple weeks ago? Well, guess what? The Twitter voting ended up with 12 selections being made and I won the contest based on the judge’s voting! Yes, that’s right I will finally be getting a Nokia E7 so I can cover it here on Nokia Experts. I have been asking for an evaluation unit since Nokia World last year and I guess my posts about Nokia and some of their ridiculous actions (or inactions) might have put me on the review blacklist 
I am looking forward to testing it out and sure hope it ends up with Anna soon because at this time I really find Symbian devices without Anna to be way below what other smartphones offer. I do still like my Nokia devices for the outstanding call quality and reception, long battery life, wonderful cameras, and more, but they really need to step it up soon.
Let me know what you would like for me to test out on the E7 and I will include it in my upcoming articles.

Enter the Nokia US support video contest by 16 May

Nokia has been running a lot of contests and Nokia Experts readers seem to have pretty good luck at winning so I wanted to share a US-based contest going on now that has five days left to enter. The Nokia Care US contest is accepting videos that show different “How-tos” for Nokia devices in just three minutes. The contest deadline is 16 May, next Monday.
I entered the video embedded below (it was tough to cut it to 3 minutes and get all the steps in there) that shows how to enjoy Amazon Video On Demand movies and Zune Pass music on your Nokia device. I thought it was timely given that Windows Phone 7 will eventually be on Nokia hardware so using the method I described you can get a glimpse of the Zune Pass functionality on your Nokia device. My video is now in the contest playlist and next week they will Tweet out the voting start with directions on how to vote.
Voting starts 17 May and goes through 24 May so I will post again when it starts so you can all vote for my video if you think it is worthy. Voters also have a chance to win a Nokia N8 so it is in your best interest to vote as well. Remember, you can only vote once during the voting period so make it count
The grand prize is a Nokia E7 and if I win I will post a review of the device here since I have yet to get a loaner eval unit and have only seen it at Nokia World last year. The runner-up prize is a Nokia Astound, which I would also love to win and would follow up here with more articles on that device.

Nokia Care US video contest voting polls are open, win a N8 for yourself

External Contest: Looxcie – the wearable bluetooth camcorder

The Looxcie is personally one of my favorite products from 2010. It is a bluetooth headset that also records video. This is not the high definition incredible clarity video – not in the least. The choices are a resolution of 240 or 480. Shooting in 240 allows you to continuously shoot for up to 5 hours of footage. 480 cuts the amount of filming down to just shy of 2 hours.
The Looxcie has been a great product for my fiancee and I these last few weeks. You may or may not be aware of the fact that we just had a premature baby (almost 9 weeks early). Due to his early birth he has been in the Neonatal ICU. The NICU has a number of rules in place to protect the babies staying there. Cell phones are banned from use as they are a breeding ground for germs.
Cameras are allowed but it isn’t necessarily always convenient to have a micro 4/3rds camera on your person when trying to take care of a very small little baby. This is where the Looxcie shines the brightest. I can place the Looxcie on my ear in recording mode and it will capture all the adorable little faces he makes.
The other time that I absolutely love the Looxcie is when I am at a trade show or any other event that may cause me to need to remember who I met, what we discussed, or any number of scenarios. The Looxcie allowed me to keep track of the different exhibits that I made it to throughout our time at CES.

1. Eligibility
The Looxcie “Wish I Had that on Video” Sweepstakes (the “Promotion”) is open only to legal residents of the United States (including District of Columbia) who are at least eighteen (18) years old at the time of entry. The Promotion is void in Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and other U.S. territories and possessions and where prohibited by law.
Employees of Looxcie (“Administrator”) or any of its affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising agencies, or any other company or individual involved with the design, production execution or distribution of the Promotion and their immediate family (spouse, parents and step-parents, siblings and step-siblings, and children and step-children) and household members (people who share the same residence at least three (3) months out of the year) of each such employee, are not eligible to participate in the Promotion.
The Promotion is subject to all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations. Participation constitutes entrant’s full and unconditional agreement to these Official Rules and the Administrator’s decisions, which are final and binding in all matters related to the Promotion. Winning a prize is contingent upon fulfilling all of the requirements set forth herein.

3. Timing
The Promotion begins on February 13, 2011 at 12:30 p.m. Pacific Standard Time (“PST”) and ends on March 13, 2011 at 11:55 p.m. PST (the “Promotion Period”). Administrator shall keep the official time for this Promotion.
4. How to Enter
Website: To enter online, visit http://www.facebook.com/Looxcie (the “Website”) and access the online entry form. As a participant (“Participant”) you will receive one (1) entry into the Promotion upon successful completion and submission of the online entry form.ADMINISTRATOR RESERVES THE RIGHT TO CONTACT PARTICIPANTS WHOSE EMAIL ADDRESS IS SUBMITTED AS PART OF THIS PROMOTION.PARTICIPANTS MAY THEN CHOOSE TO OPT-OUT OF FUTURE EMAIL NOTIFICATIONS.
For All Entries: The number of entries per person shall be limited to one (1) during the Promotion Period, regardless of method of entry. Multiple Participants are not permitted to share the same email address. Any attempt by any Participant to obtain more than the stated number of entries by using multiple/different email addresses, identities, registrations and logins, or any other methods may void all of that Participant’s entries in the Promotion and that Participant may be disqualified. Weekly Prize Drawing: On or about February 21, 29, 7 and March 14, 2011, one (1) weekly prize winner will be selected from all eligible entries received during the Promotion Period from Participants. The best entry for “What I Wish I Had on Video” will be selected by an internal panel of the Administrator. By Entering this contest, each Participant hereby consents to have the media, in any form, submitted by Participant in the “Wish I Had That on Video” Promotion used in the Administrator’s marketing materials (on the website, Facebook page, Twitter or other marketing material) or otherwise as determined by Administrator.
The potential winner will be notified by email or phone if provided at the time of entry at Administrator’s discretion. Administrator shall have no liability for any winner notification that is lost, intercepted or not received by a potential winner for any reason. If a potential winner does not respond within five (5) days of the first notification attempt by Administrator, or if the prize or prize notification is returned as unclaimed or undeliverable to such potential winner, such potential winner will forfeit his or her prize and an alternate winner may be selected. If any potential winner is found to be ineligible, has not complied with these Official Rules or declines a prize for any reason prior to award, such potential winner will be disqualified and an alternate winner may be selected by Administrator or pursuant to some other a process determined by Administrator. Administrator may successively attempt to contact up to five (5) potential winners of the weekly prize, in accordance with such procedure, and if there is still no confirmed winner of the prize in question after such attempts have been made, such prize may go unawarded. The weekly prize winner will be required to execute an Affidavit of Eligibility, a Liability Release, and (where legal) a Publicity Release (collectively, “Prize Claim Documents”) as a condition to the award by Administrator of such prize. If any potential winner fails or refuses to sign and return all Prize Claim Documents within five (5) days of prize notification, such winner may be disqualified and an alternate winner may be selected.

FOUR (4) WEEKLY PRIZE WINNERS: The weekly prize winner will receive a Looxcie wearable camcorder. The approximate retail value (“ARV”) of weekly prize is $199. Winner is solely responsible for all taxes and fees associated with prize receipt and/or use.
No cash equivalent will be awarded to any Participant for prizes won hereunder and prizes are non-transferable. No substitution will be made for any prizes won hereunder except as provided herein at the Administrator’s sole discretion. Administrator reserves the right to substitute any listed prize for one of equal or greater value for any reason. Odds of winning depend on the number of eligible entries received during the Promotion Period.
TOTAL ARV OF ALL PRIZES: $796.
9. Entry Conditions and Release
By entering, each Participant agrees to: (a) comply with and be bound by these Official Rules and the decisions of the Administrator which are binding and final in all matters relating to this Promotion; (b) release and hold harmless the Administrator and each of its affiliated companies, stockholders, the prize suppliers and any other organizations responsible for sponsoring, fulfilling, administering, advertising or promoting the Promotion, and all of their respective past and present officers, directors, employees, agents and representatives (collectively, the “Released Parties”) from and against any and all claims, expenses, and liability, including but not limited to negligence and damages of any kind to persons and property, including but not limited to invasion of privacy (under appropriation, intrusion, public disclosure of private facts, false light in the public eye or other legal theory), defamation, slander, libel, violation of right of publicity, infringement of trademark, copyright or other intellectual property rights, property damage, or death or personal injury arising out of or relating to a Participant’s entry, creation of an entry or submission of an entry, participation in the Promotion, acceptance or use or misuse of prize (including any travel or activity related thereto) and/or the broadcast, exploitation or use of entry; and © indemnify, defend and hold harmless the Administrator from and against any and all claims, expenses, and liabilities (including reasonable attorney’s fees) arising out of or relating to an entrant’s participation in the Promotion and/or entrant’s acceptance, use or misuse of prize.
USE YOUR COMMON SENSE. Any submissions by a Participant of any media depicting illegal, dangerous, obscene, pornographic, hurtful or harmful conduct (as determined by Administrator in its sole discretion) or any images of persons without their consent, will result in Participant’s disqualification from the Promotion and may result in further action.
10. Publicity
Except where prohibited, participation in the Promotion constitutes Participant’s consent to Administrator’s and/or its agents’ use of Participant’s name, any media submitted by Participant as part of the “Wish I Had that on Video,” Promotion, likeness, photograph, voice, opinions and/or hometown and state for promotional purposes in any media, worldwide, without any payment or consideration.
11. General Conditions
Administrator reserves the right to cancel, suspend and/or modify the Promotion, or any part of it, if any fraud, technical failures or any other factor beyond Administrator’s reasonable control impairs the integrity or proper functioning of the Promotion, as determined by Administrator in its sole discretion. Administrator reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any individual it finds to be tampering with the entry process or the operation of the Promotion or to be acting in violation of these Official Rules or in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner. Any attempt by any person to deliberately undermine the legitimate operation of the Promotion may be a violation of criminal and civil law, and, should such an attempt be made, Administrator reserves the right to seek damages from any such person to the fullest extent permitted by law. Administrator’s failure to enforce any term of these Official Rules shall not constitute a waiver of that provision.
12. Limitations of Liability
The Released Parties are not responsible for: (1) any incorrect or inaccurate information, whether caused by entrants, printing errors or by any of the equipment or programming associated with or utilized in the Promotion; (2) technical failures of any kind, including, but not limited to malfunctions, interruptions, or disconnections in phone lines or network hardware or software; (3) unauthorized human intervention in any part of the entry process or the Promotion; (4) technical or human error which may occur in the administration of the Promotion or the processing of entries; or (5) any injury or damage to persons or property which may be caused, directly or indirectly, in whole or in part, from entrant’s participation in the Promotion or receipt or use or misuse of any prize. If for any reason an entrant’s entry is confirmed to have been erroneously deleted, lost, or otherwise destroyed or corrupted, entrant’s sole remedy is another entry in the Promotion, provided that if it is not possible to award another entry due to discontinuance of the Promotion, or any part of it, for any reason, Administrator, at its discretion, may elect to hold a random drawing from among all eligible entries received up to the date of discontinuance for any or all of the prizes offered herein. No more than the stated number of prizes will be awarded. In event that production, technical, seeding, programming or any other reasons cause more than the stated number of prizes as set forth in these Official Rules to be available and/or claimed, Administrator reserves the right to award only the stated number of prizes by a random drawing among all legitimate, unawarded, eligible prize claims.
13. Disputes
Entrant agrees that: (i) any and all disputes, claims and causes of action arising out of or connected with this Promotion, or any prizes awarded, other than those concerning the administration of the Promotion or the determination of winners, shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action; (ii) any and all disputes, claims and causes of action arising out of or connected with this Promotion, or any prizes awarded, shall be resolved exclusively by arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association under its applicable procedures and such arbitration shall take place in San Jose, California; (iii) any and all claims, judgments and awards shall be limited to actual out-of-pocket costs incurred, including costs associated with entering this Promotion, but in no event attorneys’ fees; and (iv) under no circumstances will entrant be permitted to obtain awards for, and entrant hereby waives all rights to claim punitive, incidental and consequential damages and any other damages, other than for actual out-of-pocket expenses, and any and all rights to have damages multiplied or otherwise increased. SOMEJURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW THE LIMITATIONS OR EXCLUSION OF LIABILITY FOR INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, SO THEABOVE MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU. All issues and questions concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of these Official Rules, or the rights and obligations of the entrant and Administrator in connection with the Promotion, shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with, the laws of the State of California, without giving effect to any choice of law or conflict of law rules, which would cause the application of the laws of any jurisdiction other than the State of California.
14. Entrant’s Personal Information
Except as otherwise provided in these Official Rules, including the provisions of Section 10 hereof, information collected from entrants is subject to the Administrator’s Privacy Policy which is available at Administrator’s website.
15. Promotion Results
To obtain a copy of the winners list, send a self-addressed stamped envelope to The “Wish I Had That on Video” Sweepstakes, 1196 Borregas, Ste. 200, Sunnyvale, CA 94089. Winner’s list requests will only be accepted after the end of the Promotion Period and no later than April 15, 2011. These Official Rules will be posted on the Administrator’s Website during the Promotion Period.

USE YOUR COMMON SENSE. 10. Publicity
Except where prohibited, participation in the Promotion constitutes Participant’s consent to Administrator’s and/or its agents’ use of Participant’s name, any media submitted by Participant as part of the “Wish I Had that on Video,” Promotion, likeness, photograph, voice, opinions and/or hometown and state for promotional purposes in any media, worldwide, without any payment or consideration.
11. General Conditions
Administrator reserves the right to cancel, suspend and/or modify the Promotion, or any part of it, if any fraud, technical failures or any other factor beyond Administrator’s reasonable control impairs the integrity or proper functioning of the Promotion, as determined by Administrator in its sole discretion. Administrator reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any individual it finds to be tampering with the entry process or the operation of the Promotion or to be acting in violation of these Official Rules or in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner. Any attempt by any person to deliberately undermine the legitimate operation of the Promotion may be a violation of criminal and civil law, and, should such an attempt be made, Administrator reserves the right to seek damages from any such person to the fullest extent permitted by law. 12. Limitations of Liability
The Released Parties are not responsible for: (1) any incorrect or inaccurate information, whether caused by entrants, printing errors or by any of the equipment or programming associated with or utilized in the Promotion; (2) technical failures of any kind, including, but not limited to malfunctions, interruptions, or disconnections in phone lines or network hardware or software; (3) unauthorized human intervention in any part of the entry process or the Promotion; (4) technical or human error which may occur in the administration of the Promotion or the processing of entries; or (5) any injury or damage to persons or property which may be caused, directly or indirectly, in whole or in part, from entrant’s participation in the Promotion or receipt or use or misuse of any prize. 13. Disputes

gPad Remote Contest Winners Announced, Heres what we Heard

I think we did pretty good. You guys gave us all some really great ideas and even confirmed some of the things I though we should work on. We greatly appreciate your feed back.
Some of the most popular responses were based towards seeing more application reviews and comparisons. This is very easy to accommodate, and I will do my best to deliver a couple of Apps/Games per day. Having so many wonderful applications available in the markt it is hard to sometimes find a good one. Would you guys be O.K. with one good application or game review coupled with a few Quick Looks a day? Let me know.
Another top response was more tutorials and ways to not only improve your current rooted phone but ways to improve your non rooted phone. Tutorials are very feasible. I am confident we can get the information together for our readers and deliver it in an easy to follow post. Are there any specific tutorials you would like to see done first? With regards to the non rooted improvements. That aspect does become a little tricky. Really, the only thing available for non rooted devices are applications. I can try and find more applications that will give you a new look and feel (ADW.Launcher EX) , most of the time though root is recommended and required for a lot of the greatest mods out.
Video reviews and tutorials came up a lot too. The only complication we currently have with providing more of these is lack of a descent camera to do it and someone that can make it happen often. I have wanted this same thing for a while. If we can get a good camera to make them happen consistently, we will. We have a YouTube channel available for your viewing pleasure. If you were unaware of it, here it is.
A legacy section has run through our mind a few times. I still have my trusty G1 sitting right here on my desk and tinker with it every once and while. I will see what I can do to bring something for those of you still sporting it, forward every now and again.
Oddly enough, a podcast has also come up in team conversation. We have all wanted to set this up too. It is something we have been working out the kinks for. I can’t confirm nor deny that it is coming, but we are definitely on board with giving it a shot sometime in the future.
Last but not least, grammar and punctuation. That seemed to come up a few times also. I know I am not an English major. At times I really wish I was. Although the suggestion of improving our grammar and punctuation was something we expected to hear, no one gave us any ideas on how to improve it. Even though the contest for this give-a-way is over, we still greatly value your input. If you have and applications or resources that would help up personally, please share in the comments or send us an email.
There were a lot of really great ideas. We are looking into how we might be able to support some of the other ideas that were presented to us.
Contrary to popular belief, we do read every single email that is sent to us. I know we have many readers out there can verify that we get back to people when ever possible. I have even added people to my GChat. Don’t ever hesitate to contact us for any reason. I recently helped someone solve their issues with the Samsung Vibrant, now they are loving and enjoying Android.
The winners have all been contacted via email when possible, others were contacted via Twitter and Facebook. I have heard from nearly all of the winners, but am still waiting on a good hand full of you to get back to me. If you haven’t, for some strange reason, checked your email please do so. The sooner I hear back from everyone, the sooner I can send off for your personalized activation codes.

Ovi Daily App announces six 2010 software contest winners

Back in mid-December I let you know about the Ovi Daily App Must Have Apps contest and I was informed that Nokia has announced the winners and are working on notifying the winner of the N8. The N8 winner was selected from the group of people who correctly picked the six winning apps and it was definitely not me.
The six winning apps were as follows:

- Business/Productivity: Mobile Documents
- Entertainment: Touchnote Postcards
- Music: Shazam
- Social networking: Gravity

I LOVE applications and now that the Ovi Store is good on the Nokia N8 I am downloading and purchasing more and more on my device. To celebrate the end of the year and figure out what your favorite Symbian apps are Nokia is holding a fantastic online event called the Ovi Daily App Must Have App of the Year Awards. You can vote for apps in the event from now until 31 December 2010 and by casting your vote you are entering a contest to win a Nokia N8. They will pick from all of those who correctly pick all six winning apps and that device will have those six apps. Check out the contest video below.
Apps are nominated in the following categories: Games, Social Networking, Music, Entertainment, Utilities, and Business & Productivity. Five apps are nominated in each category. I voted for my favorite apps and hope to win a Nokia N8 too.

Now that I am happily sporting my orange Nokia N8 we wanted to go ahead and giveaway my dark gray N8 to one lucky Nokia Experts reader. It has been about a year since we have held a contest here so to get the word out about the site and find out why you think you deserve the Nokia N8 you have to complete the tasks listed below to get in a valid entry. People that have purchased my phones in the past can attest to the pristine condition I keep them in so this dark gray N8 is nearly perfect and comes with the USA warranty that is good until October 2011. The original box and all included accessories are of course part of this package. Remember that the Nokia N8 works with the 3G networks on both AT&T and T-Mobile and is worth $549!
UPDATE: OK, I’ll pay to ship it to Canada too so let’s open this up to my northern neighbors as well.

The Prize: The lucky winner will win a BlackBerry Torch 9800 and get to paint it in the color scheme of their choosing. You can jump over to ColorWare’s BlackBerry Torch 9800 Design Studio to figure out how you’d do it up. Keep in mind it’s an unlocked OEM non-CDMA phone, which means you’ll need to be running it on GSM network (best on AT&T in the USA (T-Mo works, but no 3G), Rogers in Canada, etc.).

Contest: mProductive To Do List for BlackBerry – 25 copies to be won!

Ryan did an in depth review of mProductive by Basis Design last week. I think the general consensus from the comments was it looks like a nice app and possibly a good time saver, but it’s a bit on the expensive side, even with a trial available. Well, folks, this is your lucky day. If you’re interested in mProductive for your BlackBerry, read on!
To recap, mProductive is advertised as the "ultimate BlackBerry to do list and time management application". The app manages your next actions, priorities and projects all through a single interface to your BlackBerry Task List, Calendar, Memo pad, emails, calls and sms. Also I’d like to point out that mProductive was awarded a Regional Selection in the 2010 BlackBerry Partners Fund Super Apps Developer Challenge. While mProductive is available for a wide variety of devices, there is no Torch support at this time. (Don’t shoot the messenger, it’s likely in a future update folks.)

Nine Days Left To Enter in the NASA + Etsy Space Craft Contest

Given the dwindling number of launches before the end of the program in 2011, if you’ve ever wanted to attend a shuttle launch now is the time. Even better if you can win an all-expenses-paid trip. To that end, Etsy and NASA have teamed up to offer a contest to create art that captures the awe and excitement of NASA’s space exploration. The grand prize will get you and a guest to the Kennedy Space Center for a VIP tour, shuttle launch viewing and a $500 shopping spree on Etsy.com.
Though this contest started on October 12th, there’s still time to create a work and enter. From the announcement:
After 50 momentous years and over 130 missions to the cosmos, NASA’s Space Shuttle Program will draw to a close in 2011 as it reaches its long-term goal of completing the International Space Station. To honor the program and celebrate its many accomplishments, we’re calling for designs inspired by NASA, its programs and the wonders of space exploration. Invigorate your inner maker with all that is known (and unknown) about our universe.
So get on board! There are three categories under which to enter your design(s):
- 2D Original Art (painting, drawing, hand-pulled print, mixed media or flat collage)
- 2D Art Reproduction (photographic or computer-generated print)
- 3D Art (any size or material — this includes anything not 2D, wearable art and soft sculpture are acceptable)
