CrackBerry Podcast 058: BlackBerry PlayBook and DevCon10 Super Special!

CrackBerry Podcast

Slightly recovered from our BlackBerry PlayBook shell shock yesterday, we sat down late this morning to record our DevCon10 podcast. On this show we have Bla1ze, Adam, myself and our recently crowned CrackBerry Idol champion, Dave Peckens.

After running through the developer-related announcements we get on the big news of the week and sound off on the BlackBerry PlayBook. It’s a fun filled show, so if you’re a CrackBerry Podcast listener you won’t want to miss this one!

And the Winner of CrackBerry Idol 2010 is…. Dave Peckens!

Congrats Dave!!! Welcome to the Team! Let’s kick things off with a look back at your CrackBerry Idol Audition Video!

After three months of CrackBerry Idol craziness here on the blogs, the competition is now officially over. The winner of the final community vote is none other than the CrackBerry-addicted Dave Peckens. The voting was close, but in the end Dave emerged the winner capturing 29.8% of the popular vote, in front of Kerri (23.18%), Brittany (22.95%), Joseph (12.79%) and Aloha Joe (11.29%). As winner of CrackBerry Idol 2010, Dave will be accompanying Adam, Bla1ze, Isaac and myself to the BlackBerry Developer Conference in San Francisco at the end of the month and you’ll start seeing some posts from him here on the CrackBerry blogs in the near future. In his CrackBerry Q & A, Dave said if he won CrackBerry Idol he’d help us update and get our BlackBerry 101 section in tip top shape, which I’m definitely looking forward to (and going to hold him to that!).

Also, keep in mind that while Dave was voted CrackBerry Idol by the community, I’ve been watching all of the contestants throughout the competition and taking notes as to who else I’d like to start see contributing here on CrackBerry. We have some gaps to fill and things I’d like to see us do better. In the next few days I’ll be reaching out to these contestants and I’m hoping they’ll be interested in posting on CrackBerry too. We’ll officially welcome them to the blogs when they make their first posts as CrackBerry writers. Exciting Stuff!

I hope everyone enjoyed CrackBerry Idol 2010. Yep, it was a long event, but over a quiet summer of BlackBerry news it gave us a lot of great content and introduced us to a lot of amazing people. I want to personally thank everybody who entered the competition — I know how much time and effort goes into writing and doing video for these kinds of posts — so really do appreciate it. That’s it for CrackBerry Idol 2010!

From there the CrackBerry Academy will work through the nominations and argue back and forth to determine the top five finalists in every category, who will then compete in the community vote which will happen here on the blogs later next week.

CrackBerry Podcast 057: BlackBerry Torch, Tablet, Six and Juice Extravaganza!

CrackBerry Podcast

Ok podcast fans, get ready for a humdinger of an episode. With all of the Crack Team podcast members now owning a Torch and having spent a good deal of time on it, we go round table style and discuss our loves, likes and dislikes (a couple of hates too) in regards to the BlackBerry Torch and BlackBerry 6. There are definitely some good insights and interesting debates mixed into this discussion (a couple of laughable moments too).

Then at 52 minutes into the show we switch gears and weigh-in on all of the BlackBerry tablet rumors of the moment and toss in some additional fuel for the fire. We even make a few friendly bets as to which way we think things will go (my money is on RIM not calling the tablet "BlackPad" – I just can’t see them cutting their uber-popular BlackBerry brand in half. It has to be BlackBerry "something". And BlackBerry BlackPad is just way too lame). We speculate on the OS and what it’ll be capable of and a whole lot more. Exciting stuff for sure.

Take a listen. We’re kinda of hyper on this one… it’s a long a show but I promise you’ll stay awake. Enjoy!

CrackBerry Idol update: Round 1 Kicks Off Today – 24 BlackBerry app reviews coming your way over the next two weeks!

CrackBerry Idol App Review Round
Dieter, Georga and Craig.. our own Randy, Paula and Simon of sorts!

If you tuned into the CrackBerry Idol audition videos we ran on the blogs here (check out parts I, II, III, IV and V) you already know the competition is heating up big time. We have a lot of talented individuals entered into the competition, each coming at the challenge with a unique perspective and a lot of passion. It’s stil anybody’s game.

Now that you have all seen the audition videos and know the competitors, it’s time to move onto Round 1 of CrackBerry Idol – the BlackBerry App review.  Each contestant has prepared a fullout review of their app or game of choice, complete with video, screen caps/photos and write up. We have 24 reviews (Finza had to drop out of the competition – so not 25) in the queue and we’ll be posting 2 each day (taking Sundays off) until we’ve run them all on the blogs. We did a random draw for the order of post appearance (kind of crazy, but first up for the app review was also the first app for the audition posting order). Our CrackBerry Idol judges will give their feedback on each review in the first comment to each post, and the community can follow up with their thoughts.

Once all of the BlackBerry App Reviews have been run on the blogs, we’ll do a recap post accompanied with the community voting, so you can cast your vote for who you’d like to see advance into the next round. 10 contestants will move onto Round 2. Keep it locked to CrackBerry for more Idol fun. This is gonna rock!

CrackBerry Guide to BlackBerry Golf Apps

Turn your BlackBerry into a virtual caddy with these great apps for Golf!

CrackBerry guide to BlackBerry golf apps

Summer is here and you’ve been itching to get out and golf. Grab your clubs and kiss the family goodbye, it’s time to hit the links. CrackBerry Kevin started golfing again this year after taking a decade off and is now a born again golf junkie (I have it in writing); CrackBerry James is so fanatical about golf he runs a dedicated site to the sport (golfcrunch.com); and our own CrackBerry Obi who you all know well is a golf professional by trade when he’s not dropping posts on CB. And me? Well, I used to be king of the mini-putt back in the day (or at least that’s what I told myself). Regardless of the game, I’m a firm believer that BlackBerrys and Golfing go hand in hand. We’ve all seen the company golf tournaments being played; employees making sure the boss wins. Rather than using your BlackBerry to keep in contact with those not on the green, why not use it to help you on the green as well?

What we have here is the CrackBerry guide to golfing with your BlackBerry; where you can find some of the best BlackBerry golfing applications available. Some are designed to keep score; others are designed to help drop your score. So before you tee off, make sure your BlackBerry is ready to challenge your Caddy. Fore!

As with other CrackBerry guides, the golf application list will grow over time, as more must have applications arise in the BlackBerry market.

Single Round Golf Avg Score Calculator

single round golf avg score calculator

This application simply helps you determine the average round score, as well as the differentials (the actual and the factored). The results are calculated from your handicap and the course/slope rating. The Single Round Golf Avg Score Calculator is available for $0.99.

mScorecard

mScorecard

mScorecard is an easy to use, multitasking gold application. It supports multiplayer stroke and putt tracking, round stats and game history storing. Information such as handicaps and points can all be easily tracked and calculated. mScorecard enables you to use your GPS to view your distance to the green. Sidegames, such as; Stableford, Greenies, Skins and so on, can be played as well. mScorecard is available for $19.95.

Tee Wagers Golf

Tee Wagers Golf

The Tee Wagers Golf application manages scorecards, players and courses. Also included, is the ability to play games like umbrella, rabbit and skins. For bragging rights and proof to other friends, you can email the result from the application. Tee Wagers Golf is available for $3.99.

Golf Channel Mobile

Golf Channel Mobile

If you want to keep informed of what’s going on in the world of golf, download the Golf Channel Mobile app. The application is your portal to tips and tricks, blogs/editorials and customizable leaderboards or scores. It’s a fantastic and informative tool that will benefit even newcomers to the game, as it offers details on demand that’s easy to follow. The Golf Channel Mobile Application is free.

Where to Golf

Where to Golf

Not sure where you and your friends want to golf? Tired of PUTTering around the same scenery? Find new courses to hit with Where To Golf. This application has information on over 22 000 courses found in North America. Search by address or by your own location; you will receive GPS directions to get there. Each entry will give you information on the course and club, including; green and cart rental fees, training facilities, amenities, yardage and par. You can also call from the app and book tee times. Where To Golf will cost you $2.99.

The Rules of Golf

the Rules of Golf

Cheaters never prosper, especially in golf. It’s best to know the rules of the game. It’s second best to have a reference point if you forget the rules. The Rules of Golf application provides you with the official rules and decisions of golf, approved by the United States Golf Association. If a situation creeps up, it will probably be addressed in this app. If not, you can email the USGA directly from The Rules of Golf in order to find the answer. The Rules of Golf is available for $3.99.

YouCaddy Golf SpeedPutt

SpeedPutt

The putt usually makes all of the difference and it’s frustrating if that difference is not in your favour. SpeedPutt is designed to help you prefect your putt, speed up game play and improve your game. After you input the distance, lay your BlackBerry (Storm) on the green. The screen will display an aim line, angle and incline/slope indicators. Now you can tap it in…just taaaap it in… SpeedPutt is available for $9.99 and is only available for BlackBerry Storm users.

The Driving Range

Driving Range

Practice your swing anywhere and anytime. The Driving Range app swaps out your clubs for your BlackBerry Storm; eliminating broken office windows or monitors. Your Storm helps you achieve the perfect swing, while analyzing the potential distance of the shot based on your speed. Any information you gather and be uploaded to maintain a history and for future review. Users can also benefit from promotions and discounts on fees and more. YouCaddy Golf GPS is available for $34.95.

Swing by Swing

Swing By Swing BlackBerry

FOREEEEEE!

There you have it. A bunch of great third party apps that help turn your BlackBerry into a virtual caddy. And don’t forget, your BlackBerry has native applications that will help you improve your golf game. Get your golfing buddy to use your BB’s video camera to capture your swing. Take a photo of that crazy rough you had to hit out of and make a note so you’ll remember what club you used for next time. When your swing feels good, bust out the voice recorder immediately so you can track those swing thoughts. Put that BlackBerry to work and watch your game improve.

So now, the only thing your BlackBerry won’t be able to do for you is drive the golf cart… at least for now. :)

CrackBerry Podcast 054: passionate BlackBerry talk + Vuvuzela = headache (and must-listen to episode!)

CrackBerry Podcast

Time for another CrackBerry Podcast! We had a lot of fun recording this one, so hopefully all of you CrackBery listeners out there will enjoy it too. Granted, we went a little bit overboard with the vuvuzela (now banned from all future podcasts), but between the horn blowing we managed to cover a lot of topics, including App World 2.0, and follow-up reviews of the Bold 9650 and Pearl 3G. We also touch on the CrackBerry Idol competition and how the action is heating up and the competition rounds haven’t even begun yet and as always cover the rumormill. There’s lots of good stuff buried in here, so give it a listen!. Enjoy the show!

Get to know the CrackBerry Idol competitors – watch their audition videos! (part 2)

CrackBerry Idol Contestants!

OK, we’re back with our next preview of five more of the contestants competing in Round 1 of CrackBerry Idol. The CrackBerry Idol winner will become a regular contributor to the CrackBerry blogs, so among the audition vids you’ll be witnessing a future CB blogger. Who that person is will be up to the community to decide, so be sure to watch all of the audition videos as we get them up here, so when it comes to the competition rounds (app review, case review, accessory review, device review) you’ll know who each competitor is.

We did a random drawing for which order their audition videos would hit the blogs and next up we have Dave, Finza, DJ, Nick and David. Each of them is ready and more than willing to be the next CrackBerry Idol, and they each have some compelling arguments as to why they should be the next CrackBerry Idol. Watch their awesome audition videos below and be sure to leave some shoutouts of encouragement in the comments – the road to becoming the CB Idol is paved with hard work! Keep in mind the community judging starts with the app reviews (not the audition vids), so please keep your comments relevant and constructive.

Get to know the CrackBerry Idol competitors – watch their audition videos! (part 1)

CrackBerry Idol Contestants!

25 contestants are currently hard at work prepping their BlackBerry app reviews for Round 1 of CrackBerry Idol. But before their reviews hit the blogs next week we have this week to get to know the competitors via their audition videos. The CrackBerry Idol winner will become a regular contributor to the CrackBerry blogs, so among the audition vids you’ll be witnessing a future CB blogger. Who that person is will be up to the community to decide, so be sure to watch all of the audition videos as we get them up here, five at a time.

We did a random drawing for posting order and first up we have Joseph, Yousif, Brittany, Zander and Shankeith. Each of them is ready and more than willing to be the next CrackBerry Idol, and they each have some compelling arguments as to why they should be the next CrackBerry Idol. Watch their awesome audition videos below and be sure to leave some shoutouts in the comments at your favorite. I can tell the battle is already heating up, and the first round has yet to begin!
