Sony Ericsson Supports The Android Modding Community – Assists Developers Build Custom ROMs

This image has no alt text

Sony Ericsson is properly aware of the Android modding community and as opposed to other OEM&rsquos who try and squash it, they&rsquore performing their part to support support it. No matter whether it&rsquos developing a custom ROM or modifying the kernel, the Sony Ericsson Developer program is aimed at helping these devs cook up good and stable custom ROMs and they&rsquore beginning with a group of devs named &ldquoFreeXperia.&rdquo These are the guys responsible for creating custom ROMs based on CyanognenMod and porting/modifying them to various Xperia devices lke the Play and Arc.

Sony Ericsson was one of &mdash if not the first Android OEM to announce they would present the selection to unlock the bootloaders in their 2011 Xperia lineup. Karl-Johan Dahlstr&oumlm, Head of Developer Relations for Sony Ericsson and all about nice guy (whom I had the pleasure of meeting at E3 this year), has been performing a great job at keeping Sony Ericsson devices open thanks to his close perform with developers. According to Mr. Dahlstr&oumlm,

&ldquoWe firmly believe in the openness of Android and we are actually impressed by the massive activity shown in our items. By getting supportive and open, we hope to both learn from the open community, and also share expertise when that is feasible.

When it came to Sony Ericsson&rsquos involvement with the FreeXperia developers,

We were impressed by the passion shown and decided to assist out with some bits and pieces. A couple of proprietary solutions needed to be explained and we helped them with that. We also supported the group with approximately 20 devices, to make their work simpler.

Sony Ericsson would also like to remind you that unlocking the bootloader and loading a custom ROM on their devices will more than most likely void your warranty. A risk we&rsquove been willing to take given that rooting our G1&primes back in the day. For your standard, typical Joe Schmoe consumer, keeping your device is 100% stock is usually the wisest choice. Either way, it&rsquos refreshing to see the actions Sony Ericsson has taken to support the Android modding community and something other Android OEM&rsquos can definitely learn a thing or two from.

So if you have often been into the appear of say, the Zune music player (guilty!), you can finally have your cake and eat it too.

UberMusic is accessible proper now in the Android Market place for $ 3.50 and if you’re one of “those kinds” that doesn’t like paying for their apps or merely can’t because of your region, Mr. Carnales mentioned right now via Twitter that a totally free version of the app could be in the works.

Galaxy Tab 10.1 Gets First Custom ROM

It’s kind of become a rite of passage for new Android devices to get their own custom ROMs. Every major Android tablet and phone has gone through it, and it looks as though the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is joining the club. This comes just 9 days after the Moto Xoom got its own custom ROM. The Tab 10.1 ROM appears to be a faster, deodexed version of the stock ROM that the device ships with. Granted, it’s not perfect, but it’s definitely usable.

So, if you’ve got a hankering for a faster experience on your Galaxy Tab 10.1, you can check out the KhasMek ROM here. Has anyone installed this ROM yet? What do you think? Sound off in the comments below, or on our Facebook Wall!

Motorola XOOM Gets its First Custom ROM

This image has no alt text

The Motorola XOOM has received it’s first custom-baked ROM, the result of work undertaken by bigrushdog of XDA and the Tiamat Team. The ROM goes by the fairly uninspired XOOM Rom 1.0 Deodexed name, but the custom software is far from basic.  – all sorts of advanced options come neatly packaged inside. The bad news is though the ROM is based off of a stock build of XOOM software taken from the Verizon 3G version of the tablet, installing it will break 3G service if you are a current VZW subscriber. A pretty epic win for the XOOM community, nonetheless. Find full instructions at the source link below.

Dev Community Brings First Custom ROM to Droid Charge

The Droid Charge has been out just over a week, and is a solid device. Samsung has always given us fairly “moddable” phones, and have been doing it for quite a while…it’s not a huge surprise that the mod community is quick to pounce, successfully, on a custom ROM.

Custom MIUI Port for Samsung Vibrant

The ROM/UI everyone has been going nuts over is now available for your Samsung Vibrant and running on Android 2.2.1 Froyo, thanks to Jamezelle. It’s still in the alpha stage of development meaning somethings aren’t working (i.e. GPS, cellular radio, data), and it’s not considered completely stable. So its probably not a good idea for a daily driver, considering it’s basically a pretty brick at the moment, but it’s still a nice addition to the Vibrant development scene.

Installation is the same as any other Vibrant ROM, you can download it here. For the full scope and the continued development of this ROM, which will be carried out by jumaaneface and Master™, check out the official XDA thread.

Thanks, Ali.

11 New Custom Docks for ADW.Launcher EX by mowmo

After we released a linked page to the LauncherPRO docks and advised they work on the latest update for ADW.Launcher EX, we have noticed a pretty good amount of traffic to it. I thought we should keep with that trend and see about finding more docks to share.

Developer mowmo from xda-developers, has released 11 new custom docks recently.  All of them were designed for use with ADW.Lancher EX but will of course work with LauncherPRO as well.

They are all fairly basic but definitely worth the download. It never hurts to have a whole bunch of dock files in your device. I change my device up almost everyday, no matter how perfect it looks.

You can locate the thread at xda-developers and the download file can be located at MobileGeek.it.

I was thinking about making a few docks myself. Would any of you guys like to see an AndroidSPIN dock? Let me know, I just might make it for myself, but would be happy to share with everyone when I make a few variations.

Custom Docks for LauncherPRO and ADW.Launcher

It sure was refreshing to see ADW Launcher gaining that missing ability of customized docks. That simple addition makes, in my opinion, ADW and Launcher PRO almost equals in home replacement. I felt compelled to make sure that when I wrote this post for you all that Launcher PRO was listed first. Since there have been so many amazing people out there creating and developing these docks specifically for that application.

Now that ADW has custom dock settings, we can use the same images. The site I found has well over 150 different styles to choose from.

You can head on over to launcherpro.droidicon and manually download them and transfer them to your device. There is also a very handy application available with oodles of icons and docks to choose from. The app makes it a little simpler because it directly downloads to your phone with out the need to transfer from your PC to your device. I have yet to use the application myself, but you can find it below. It should work with ADWLauncher just as well as it does for Launcher PRO.

Let us know if you find other great sources for new docks. We are all very excited to start using this new feature.

Click or Scan the QRCode below to find out more information about the LauncherPRO Icons and Docks application.

Blink Led Notification Updates, Adds Custom Color Selection and More

Good news for those of you who run with stock ROMS, app developer Download Android.info has updated their Blink led notification app, adding a rainbow of color to your vanilla Android world.

Many phones, like the Nexus One, contain a full color led but rely on white for most notifications. Boring, right? Blink, if you aren’t familiar, lets you make use of your phone’s led full color capabilities to enable multi-color notifications.

Adding even more multi to your notifications, Blink now allows for custom color selections and color naming. The color wheel is a great touch, but the colors themselves are sometimes hit or miss. On my Nexus One, the primary colors of blue, red and yellow seemed to work the best, all of the purples look more like hot pink.

There are also some bugs to be worked out with Blink working properly on some devices; but if you’re looking to mix things up, it’s worth a try. Below you’ll find the full changelog as well as links to download the app if you want to try it on your phone.

Product Features:

  • LED Color Test Function to Check Device LED Support Status
  • New SMS & MMS LED Color & Frequency Adjustment
  • Missed Call LED Color & Frequency Adjustment
  • New Phone Call LED Color & Frequency Adjustment
  • Low Battery & System Memory LED Color & Frequency Adjustment

New Features in Blink 1.9 (Jan. 14, 2011):

  • Add LED color test function to check device LED support status (customized colors and LED test guide are available for the test).
  • Removed duplicate low battery/memory notification messages and added options to send/cancel notification messages.
  • User operation and procedure optimized.
  • Other minor improvements.

Click or Scan the QRCode below to find out more information about the Blink application. You can also find more info and share the application with your friends on the AndroidSPIN App Site.

XDA Brings You Custom Apps: See The Time Text Was Sent, and Stream TV

The Android market has a ton of ridiculously cool, highly customizable apps. But sometimes, for the TRULY customizable capabilities, you have to turn to the third-party devs working on the customizable apps. To that end, we present to you two very powerful apps created by XDA-Developers.

Up first, ykk_five has created an app that allows you to see not only the time your texts were received, but the time they were actually sent. Follow the steps in the first source article, and you’ll have some help seeing when texts were sent, not just when they were received.

Equally cool, KuRouZu has developed an app that will let you pull from many sources like Megavideo and will stream TV shows and other random video to your Android device. The UI is apparently very intuitive, although it requires Froyo with Flash Player 10.1.

In our haste to find great icon sets for our Android devices, we sometimes forget other avenues that exist. I am always on the hunt for something different that will make my home screen stand out from the rest. Of course it is always best if you can take the time to sit down and make your own. CyanogenMod releases custom ROM with lockscreen gestures for DROID

CyanogenMod has released a custom ROM with a lockscreen gesture feature courtesy of mtwebster. A version of this ROM is now available for the original DROID.

Gestures is the ability to “draw” out anything you wish onto your lock screen which will then launch an application or phone activity that is associated with that drawing, similar to Google’s Gesture Search app.

For now, only DROID users can try out this custom ROM, but there will be more devices supported soon. Click the CyanogenMod source link if you want to check out this ROM!
