Three UK responds to HTC Desire Froyo upgrade questions

We just received a note from a reader concerning the upgrade to Froyo for the HTC Desire. According to the email received from Three:

We have checked this with HTC and they have removed the Android 2.2 (Froyo) software update from their server. Customers with generic variants of the HTC Desire will not receive any message prompting them to update the software.

Once HTC launches the software update, we’ll be able to provide it to all our customers. You can always check HTC website for any updates and details.

So, there you have it. Looks like the carrier is holding out for the manufacturers again, and the users are caught in the crossfire.

What do you think of the delay? Be sure to let us know in the comments!

HTCSense.com now online – currently only supports Desire HD & Desire Z

HTC is making great effort to ensure you want to choose them for your next Android powered smartphone.  Their new website and service at HTCSense.com has gone live and touts some pretty nice features should you own an HTC Desire HD or Desire Z.

  • Remotely backup your contacts
  • GPS location finder if you lose or misplace your phone
  • Remote ring if you can’t find it in the house
  • Remote lock and/or wipe of your phone if it’s lost or stolen
  • Re-route text messages and phone calls to a separate number if you leave your phone at home
  • SMS in real time via your browser instead of your phone
  • Remote installation of custom themes/skins from HTC
  • Remotely mark apps for install on HTCSense to install later

All in all, a very useful set of features that extend the capabilities of your Android device.  I’d like to see more services like this rolled out by phone manufacturers instead of heavily customized skins.  Way to go HTC – we can’t wait for this service to extend to more phones.  Check out a video walkthrough of the site from pocketnow after the jump.

Vodafone UK Getting the Desire HD, Too

Not that we’re surprised, but here goes nothing: Vodafone’s getting the HTC Desire HD. Shocker, right? The original Desire is one of their most popular phones (despite all of the shenanigans you guys had to put up with in Vodafone 360 bloatware), so it only makes sense that they bring out the sequel. The news comes to us as the phone was spotted in a coming soon catalog for the carrier. So who’s ready for even more Desire in glorious “HD” fashion?

Need a refresher on what you get with this package? No problem. Enjoy Android 2.2 with the latest version of HTC Sense with a 4.3-inch screen, a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, GPS, HSPA, WiFi, an 8-megapixel camera with HD video recording, and more.

HTC Desire HD ROM ported to DROID Incredible, Desire, now EVO 4G

Perhaps you’ve seen the amazing boot time on the HTC Desire HD, which ranges anywhere from 3-5 seconds. A couple days ago, it was announced that the Motorola DROID Incredible and Desire had gotten a port of this snappy new ROM, which was showing off the same cool boot time as the original ROM. Now, however, it looks like these two devices aren’t the only ones seeing some ROM porting love, as the HTC EVO 4G has joined in the party.

Keep in mind that these ports should be considered half-baked, as there are issues with camera, wifi, 4G and more. But, if you’re willing to sacrifice those aspects for a speedy ROM, then back up your current configuration, and give it a go! Links to the xda threads are found below:

HTC Desire HD ROM Ported to Desire and Incredible

desire-hd-rom-09-20-2010

No more than a few days after the phone was officially announced, the ROM for the HTC Desire HD was already available and loaded onto an HTC HD2. Now the ROM is getting used to a more familiar setting inside of not one but two HTC Android handsets. The firmware has been ported to both the HTC Droid Incredible and the original HTC Desire, bringing along the new HTC Sense and some slight speed improvements overall.

The build plays nicely with the two devices for the most part, aside from a lack of camera support and some minor glitches here and there. If you are one of the more adventurous types and fancy yourself giving this a try on your own phone, XDA Developers has all the information you will need for both the Incredible and Desire.

HTC’s Latest Preview of the Desire HD shows HTC Media Link Adapter and More!

HTC’s Youtube channel posted a new overview video of the upcoming HTC Desire HD.  If you watch the video, one thing you will notice is the introduction of the HTC Media Link Adapter.  The HTC Media Link Adapter acts as a DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) receiver.

As the HTC Desire HD is a DLNA compliant device, it allows you to stream your phone’s media content to the wonders of your large screen TV.  I’m not sure if this is new or not, but it’s the first I’ve heard of it.

Following in the footsteps of Samsung, HTC is now providing Dolby Mobile and SRS Surround Sound for the Desire HD when you have your headset connected.  If you’ve tried this on the Samsung Galaxy S, you’ll know that it’s really pretty cool and gives an amazing media experience.

Anyway, enough of my yapping.  All this information is in the video for you to watch instead.  Click on the video below to check out the latest and greatest features of the HTC Desire HD.

Let’s hope they come out with a US version of the HTC Desire HD. Current rumors and FCC filings indicate that it only has UK band support. Also, keep an eye out for more information from Alex Smith as he works his way though the features of the leaked HTC Desire HD ROM on his HTC HD2.

MIUI ROM for Desire and Nexus One. The Best of Everything from the Chinese!

Funny thing is, only yesterday I stumbled across a post on XDA talking about a ROM from China called MIUI that is apparently a new, one of a kind experience.  Today I see that our friends over at Android Central have also latched on to the ROM and posted a small teaser.

Twice in 2 days this ROM has lept in front of me so I thought I’d better see what its all about.  You can find more info for yourself on the official MIUI site at www.miui.com.

The developers have taken the best parts of most other operating system and come up with what appears to be a amazing piece of work.  Unfortunately, a majority of the interface is in Chinese but there is enough in English to be able to get around and play a little.

The current version is still far from a daily use ROM, and the developer freely admits this, but work continues and I can see this being a big hit especially if we can get some US developers involved and provide more English support.

It appears that the ROM has been mostly custom built using only the base from Android 2.2 and then building an exceptional interface on top that could beat anything else that currently exists.

From full FM radio support to completely customizable home screens, dedicated buttons on the lock screen that take you to the SMS app and the phone dialer.  They really have done an great job of taking the best features from other phones and operating systems and integrate them all in one ROM.

The developers have released a 4:30 minute video showing the main features.  You will note that they have increased the speed of the video so it does look a little weird. Not sure if this was done to show off all the features in short period of time or make the ROM look faster than it is. You can decide.

You can also find a nice overview of the current features in this MIUI forum that you can also read in English using Google translate.  Makes it a little easier for us English speakers.

Desire HD Benchmark Blows away the Competition, ROM Already Up and Running an HD2

If you had any doubts that the HTC Desire HD was going to be fast you can throw them out the window as Quadrant benchmark scores are already in for the newly announced handset. It looks like the next generation of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon pulls its weight in this one with its larger cache and GPU speed optimizations. The Desire HD easily bests an unmodified Nexus One running Froyo and tops out with a score right around 2,000 on Quadrant’s arbitrary scale, making it the fastest stock Android handset we have ever seen.

hd2-desire-hd-romAnd why wait to get the Desire HD’s Froyo build on an actual Desire HD when it has already been ported to the HD2? Sure, it won’t be nearly as fast as the actual HD, but you can pretend. The rumblings surrounding the ROM give major props to the new version of HTC Sense. We’re sure you can expect it to start making its way to other rooted handsets as well as those crafty developers have their way with it.

T-Mobile UK Green-lights Official Froyo Update for HTC Desire

htc_desire_t-mobile_restock-small

Just because the HTC Desire Z and HTC Desire HD were announced last week doesn’t mean all love is lost for the original Desire, and those owning the phone on T-Mobile UK can rest a bit easier knowing the update to Android 2.2 (Froyo) began over the weekend. Some of you might already have the update, but just like most OTA updates the roll-out will take a few weeks, so be prepared to hunker down and wait it out for Froyo.

“The 2.2 firmware update (FroYo) will be available from today and will be sent over the air (OTA) direct to your phone over the coming week.”

That’s the official word. Feel free to rejoice in the comments below.

HTC Desire HD gets a test ROM

The Android development community never ceases to amaze me. The HTC Desire HD has yet to be released, but it already has a test ROM thanks to the folks over at XDA-Developers. The build is for testing purposes only, but it’s a step in the right direction for having a flashable ROM ready when the Desire HD is actually released.

The Desire HD is already putting up some impressive benchmark numbers, thanks to the Snapdragon MSM8255 processor. It is currently racking up Quandrant scores of over 2000, and that’s without a custom kernel or other mods. Europeans looking for a powerful Android phone should start getting excited about the HTC Desire HD.

HTC Desire HD Passes Through FCC, No U.S. 3G in Sight

The team over at Engadget recently found out that the HTC Desire HD has passed through the FCC. Recent filings were discovered.  Not surprisingly, there are no U.S. 3G Bands (this makes me sad!). I should mention to everyone that you can still run the phone on Edge for both T-Mobile and ATT.  I might even do so, although I really love 3G.

Anybody else want to import this beast?

FCC data reveals HTC Desire HD not coming to US

If you were all excited about the Desire HD coming to your local US carrier, prepare for disappointment.  The FCC data on this new Android phone shows that it’s lacking the proper 3G chipset for North American use.  From the pics, you get a glimpse of the battery compartment, revealing the European 900/2100 band instead of 850/1900 or 1700/2100 used stateside.  It’s not surprising considering it is basically the same phone as the HTC Evo 4G with a splash of extra physical style and lacking that useful kickstand.

HTC Desire HD Shows Up in FCC Filing Lacking American 3G

htc-desire-hd-fcc

The HTC Desire HD has made its way on to the FCC after it was unveiled in London earlier this week, and much to the collective disappointment of American Android fans, 3G radio bands matching those for North American carriers are no where to be found.  The filing matches up with the PDP98100 model number found on the Desire HD, so little doubt remains that a release States-side isn’t in HTC’s immediate future plans.

How does it feel now that the shoe is on the other foot? Yeah, America already has the EVO but that Desire HD sure is looking mighty sexy right about now…

T-Mobile UK Begins Rolling Out Android 2.2 to the HTC Desire

Good news T-Mobile UK Desire users! Froyo is now beginning to hit your device as we have received several reports that the update is coming full force bringing your share of Android 2.2. Don’t worry if the update hasn’t hit your device yet as it could possibly take a couple of days until your device prompts you for the update, just know that it is coming.

You can manually check for the update by following the normal Menu>Settings>About Phone>System software updates>Check now route if you don’t want to wait for it to hit, but that OTA prompt is always comforting to see every now and then. We’ve also heard one report where after the update was installed, the user noticed that the Account Management application was in Dutch, anyone else see this?

Let us know in the comments below what you guys think of the Android 2.2 update. Enjoy!

Thanks Ben!

HTC Desire HD & Z: Hands-On First Impressions

This image has no alt text

Great day out at London yesterday attending the HTC unveiling besides a few shall we say ‘technical hiccups’ – My camera broke while recording the announcement & the wi-fi was severely overloaded… but I rolled with the punches.

Panorama 1

HTC chose a great venue (click pic above) right by the Thames River with a great view of Tower Bridge and lots of people from all parts of the world attending; now to the unveiling. As soon as the curtain was pulled there was a fantasticly huge screen showing HTC’s themes interactively on screen. HTC executives and staff appeared on stage showing off the new HTC Sense – “Sense 2.0″ – and finally unveil the HTC Desire HD and HTC Desire Z.

Check out my brief hands-on below with detailed textual analysis following:

HTC DESIRE HD

My favourite of both phones – it made such an impression on me that this is my next  mobile when it launches. Packing a crispy yet natural looking super-LCD display measuring a whopping 4.3″,  a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, 8 mega pixel camera capable of recording HD 720p video and duel LED flash.  Other technology includes Dolby surround sound both through the speakers and earphones, and an FM radio. All this is sculpted inside a solid aluminium block creating a practically seamless design just like the HTC Legend.

So how does it feel?  Gorgeous. It’s a large phone, HTC have mastered the balance of size and weight for it, it’s not too light and it’s no brick – it’s slim (11.8 mm in fact) – it feels nice to hold being seamless aluminium and it generally feels sturdy. A pleasure to hold and use – one thing that really interested me was the size of the virtual keyboard, helpfully a little bigger and nicer to use than the one on my HTC Magic and other phones that have a smaller screen.

HTC Desire HD_Front+Back+LeftHTC Desire HD_InsideP1000631P1000670

HTC DESIRE Z

I like it! – Nice to handle, not that bad of a looker in my opinion and finally HTC give us another QWERTY phone! The feel of the phone is rather smooth, fits nicely in the hand and and easy to use one handed portrait. For a QWERTY phone it seems rather slim too and popping out the keyboard is swift with the hinged design, you push and it pops – quick and easy. The keyboard has obviously had some effort put into it. The general design and size is a real pro when you want to type and then interact on the screen because the keyboard is not so wide that you have to stretch your finger to touch the screen. Key spacing is quite important and the Desire Z does quite well, I especially like the 2 programmable buttons on the bottom right.

HTC Desire Z_3ViewsHTC Desire ZP1000638P1000648

HTC SENSE 2.0

In my opinion sense 2.0 brings some welcome both ‘under the bonnet’ and ‘front’ improvements and features. One of the biggest being interactive online at htcsense.com allowing functions such as online back up, installing apps from your pc, locating, tracking, locking and “self-destruct data” of the phone. Finding your Android phone near you even if it’s on silent, you can even set your phone on divert so if you ever leave it on your desk at work you can set it to divert calls to your home phone.

Other welcome features include:

  • 10 second Fastboot! needs no introduction…..
  • Themes! You can skin and theme your home screen and status bar with several designs and even preview the theme before applying it without the need for any other app.
  • The ability to flip the phone on it’s face to reject a call
  • The ability to pre-cache maps and use them offline - I hate having to wait for the maps to load while zooming in and out – problem solved! They’ve also somewhat enhanced the compass by making it point to where you need to go say for navigating.
  • Long press on a word and you can highlight and search that particular word or phrase easily through Google, Wikipedia etc.
  • The phone ‘knows’ certain scenarios and adjusts the volume accordingly, so if it’s in your bag the phone will ring louder and if say it was out , the ring will be lower.
  • Extended caller info - a good idea. So when your friends or family call latest updates from social networking sites also appear on screen or if say they have a birthday coming up. I can see this being very useful.
  • If your using the maps/navigation app – when you receive a call instead of you being taken away from the app it will actually add a ‘layer’ at the bottom of the screen of the person calling. Wouldn’t it be awesome if  this feature was included for games etc too!
  • Being able to connect your device to a TV via DNLA
  • An improved camera and gallery app allowing you to digitally zoom using a bar on screen, a gallery that nicely displays your snaps and you can edit photos like cropping and adding effects. When you upload them to Facebook you can tag friends too – no longer do you have to upload it from your phone and use a pc to instantly tag your images.
  • A built in Ebook functionality- perfect as ebooks have been becoming more popular

Some of these functionalities are already available via apps on the market but it’s nice to actually have them incorporated in. Some other features should really have been in Android already – for example I dislike when I’m in the middle of playing a game or in an app and then the phone rings and I’m taken to the incoming call screen, a little bar layered on the bottom of the screen is definitely a good idea **hint hint Google & Modders**.

Now for some niggly bits :

  • It’s a shame neither phone comes with a kickstand. Both have great quality screens and Dolby surround sound but what about when you want to watch a movie? we’ll have to lean it on something to enjoy watching it.
  • No front facing camera! Video calling is easier than ever with apps like Fring allowing free video calls, shame this was left out!
  • No Dedicated camera button – they’re just handy!
  • No fastboot if you pull the battery. I specifically asked about this one and the fast boot works by making the phone go into a very low-resourceful state – fantastic aspect but if the battery does get removed from the phone normal boot time remains. No complaints on this one really.

Overall I’m personally very pleased with both phones and would recommend them, during the time I had played with them the screens were very nice to use and responsive along with the UI. Below is the actual presentation video from the event:

We’re in the process of getting our hands on some demo units so keep an eye on Phandroid.com!
But if your looking forward to getting your own Desire HD or Z you can pre-order both now ready for October 11th!

P.S. Nokia were holding an event not far away and sent some of there cronies down with big red baloons advertising nokia. They also gave away some very ummmm cheesy rubbish interesting stuff in there “HTC press conference survival kits”.
nokia-htc-survival-guide

As I’m sure you could have guessed, there were zero Nokia foam fingers raised in the HTC audience.

Fresh off yesterday’s official announcement, the HTC Desire Z, aka the Euro G2, is now available unlocked from Amazon UK for £429.99, with a ship date of October 11th.  The Android 2.2 slider underwent a bit of an online price war earlier today, with Amazon UK initially offering the phone for £499.99, but then lowering their price after Play.com posted the Desire at £430.00

Perhaps another online retailer will come along and lower the price even further, but for now, Amazon’s £429.99 is the price to beat. So, for all our European readers out there, if you’re interested in pre-ordering an unlocked Desire Z, head on over to Amazon UK.

HTC Desire HD, LG Optimus One to be Offered by T-Mobile UK

This image has no alt text

T-Mobile UK’s getting early dibs on announcing availability of two of the newest phones from LG and HTC. Product pages have gone live for both the HTC Desire HD officially unveiled earlier today and the previously announced LG Optimus One. As for the former, they do nothing outside of listing the specs we’ve learned about today: a 4.3-inch touchscreen, HD video recording and playback, and 8-megapixel camera, and 4GB of internal memory. You can sign up to be notified about the device’s launch once that time comes.

htc_desire_hd_t-mobile-small

As for the Optimus One? It’s receiving similar treatment, though T-Mobile’s keen on calling it the “Navigation Edition.” Perks are that it comes pre-installed with Google’s Maps suite (which is nothing special) and will be bundled with a car dock and charger. I can’t say I’d be too angry at this package at all, price pending. They are also taking down names and email addresses for that one so be sure to head on over there if this is something that entices you.
