EVO 4G Scratch Test Says This Thing Can Take Some Wear, Maybe Even Tear

One of our members over at AndroidForums.com – Roman G. – is returning his HTC EVO 4G to Sprint due to a physical defect, and before he exchanges it for a brand new one, he decided to give us a look at how well the screen holds up to tough conditions.

His scratch test consisted of taking a metal screw, a key, a razor blade, and a penny to the EVO’s screen with no regard to its safety (or feelings, because phones do have feelings). The result was pretty impressive: nary a scratch or nick to be found (at least from what we can see, and we just decided to take his word for it, anyway).

If anything, this just tells us that you won’t have much to worry about if your keys/loose change and your phone end up brawling with each other in the same pocket. Still, who wouldn’t want the piece of mind of keeping a screen protector on that beautiful display?

[Note]: The glass covering the camera lens on the back of the phone is still very scratchable, so don’t use this as an excuse to treat your phone like it stole something from you.

Run Android 2.2 (Froyo) on your iPhone before it’s even out for your Android phone!

It’s not even officially released yet and already Android 2.2 (Froyo) has been ported to the iPhone.  It has all the issues the previous release; it has no WiFi and the power management is all but non-existent, but it is running and you can send text messages and make phone calls.  Not ready for any sort of daily use, it’s been ported mainly to show that it can be done and allow you show off to your friends.

Read on to find out what’s involved…

Prerequisites:

  • OpeniBoot installed on your iPhone.
  • Download this archive and place it on the desk.
  • Phoneview or Cyberduck installed on your computer.
  • Packages afc2add or OpenSSH installed through Cydia.

Transferring files on the iPhone

  1. Open Phoneview or Cyberduck and position in the path / Private / var and transferred all the files in the archive you downloaded it;
  2. Now create a new folder in path / Private / var and name Firmware.
  3. Download this new archive and place the files inside the firmware folder.

Installation Openiboot:

  1. Download this file, unzip it and place it on your desktop.
  2. Put your device in recovery mode: turn off the device and connect to the computer while holding down the Home button until iTunes recognizes the device (alternatively you can use RecBoot, Much faster and easier to use).
  3. Launch Terminal and type the following commands in sequence:

    cd Desktop
    CD Installer
    sudo. / loadibec openiboot.img3
  4. Three symbols appear on the screen of the device: move to the second with the power button, and press the Home button on the top. Wait until it displays ‘Welcome to OpeniBoot‘.
  5. Move back to your Terminal and type this command: . / Oibc.
  6. Put the device in recovery mode but this time hold down Home and Power until you see the classic iTunes logo with the cable screen. Close iTunes on your Mac and move to the Terminal.
  7. From terminal, press Ctrl and C together.
  8. Re-enter by writing OpeniBoot sudo. / loadibec openiboot.img3. Without this, the three symbols appear again. This time, do not hit the Home button.
  9. On the terminal, while remaining in the Installer folder, type. / Oibc and do not press Enter.
  10. Navigate to OpeniBoot and click on Home, then on the terminal type the command . / Oibc. Wait till you see ‘Welcome to OpeniBoot‘, Type install Terminal and wait till your iPhone 3G reboots

Dell Gets Even Crazier With Their Latest Roadmap, Now Featuring the Sparta and Athens

As I sit here typing this, I can’t help but wonder what’s gotten into Dell recently: at one point, everyone was ready to count them out of the mobile phone and devices game for good. To everyone’s surprise, though, they’ve bounced back with unbelievable velocity and they aren’t showing any signs of slowing down.

AndroidCentral dug up more Dell goodies for us to drill more info (or speculation) out of. A pair of netbooks – something we’d expect to see from Dell given their traditional laptop background – have cropped up this time around, though. Named the Athens and the Sparta, these netbooks are Dell’s first attempt at the Android game in this light.

As far as the Athens goes, it’s an 11-inch netbook that swivels, has bluetooth, 3G, and WiFi for your data and connectivity needs, and has an ARM processor. The Sparta, on the other hand, seems to be the same thing except Dell classifies it as a “netbook tablet”,  which we’ll assume has a touchscreen, as well.

The most interesting thing about this roadmap is that the Moblin logo also appears for the “medium” and “XL” categories. We could see Dell offering multiple configurations of these same devices, but we don’t care about those other configurations, of course: we only want all the ‘droid we can handle. By the end of 2011, we should see Dell stocking a nice assortment of Android devices. Will you be there to help thrust them into the mobile game like they’ve been longing to do?

Even Assassins Have a Family

Story Gamer (image: gampeople.co.uk)

Story Gamer (image: gampeople.co.uk)

Video games don’t usually bear very much  resemblance to real life. Not only a lack of consequences, and super powers, but the characters often seem to exist in a post-human state without jobs, mortgages or families. It was with some excitement then that I read Mark Clapham’s review  of Assassin’s Creed 2 – Ezio has a firm family story.

But it doesn’t stop there, he has a pampered younger sister Claudia. “Wrenched from her fashionable city life, Claudia finds herself in an unusual position for a wealthy young woman, taking charge of the estate accounts and managing the family business. Her bickering discussions with her older brother, as she rails against this new life and berates her brother when he neglects his duties, are wholly believable.”

Here, Assassin’s Creed does something very unusual – focuses gameplay itself on this day to day running of family affairs. So much so that Clapham, Game People’s reviewer who focuses on story, was taken up by the task of making this aspect of Ezio’s world work. I’ll quote from Clapham’s review:

This micro-economic sub-game is surprisingly akin to Animal Crossing in its warm, nurturing atmosphere, and I got real pleasure from seeing Monteriggioni transform from a dilapidated, bleak town with boarded up windows to a thriving, well-lit community. It’s a surprisingly gentle, sentimental diversion in a game full of bloody, retributive violence. Without enemies to deal with, exploration in the town and various hidden areas becomes a more relaxed experience.

Eventually, I’d levelled up most of the assets in town, and my vendetta needed to continue elsewhere. However, returning to Monteriggioni remains advantageous between missions, as a relaxing diversion as well as a chance to refill Ezio’s money purse. Tokens of your adventures are displayed around the house, to be admired.

Are there parts of other games that you have found fun and obsession in? It’s one of my favourite aspects of modern gaming that every player can play them their own way. In our family each of us certainly seems to find different ways to enjoy even the simplest of challenges. I really enjoy reading game reviews that focus on this aspect of personality play.
