Connectrode Surely Connects with Puzzle Fans

Looking for a thought-provoking and entirely original puzzle game to occupy your mind? Look no further than title="Download Connectrode on the App Store" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/connectrode/id438450056?mt=8" target="_blank">Connectrode – a new puzzle game developed just for iOS by a team of independent designers. Connectrode takes similar puzzle genre games like match-three, Sudoku, and brick breaker and turns them upside down in a straightforward, but elegant multi-level puzzle game.

The basic premise of Connectrode is to clear the gridded board by connecting like-colored microchip squares  with the same color connectors. The only hitch is you can’t place a connector block in any section of the grid that is blocked off by already placed connectors. In other words, new blocks can’t pass by way of existing blocks. The challenge is to rack up the score as you clear the board by acquiring bonus points for clearing 3 chips or having no remainder connectors or microchips. The guidelines are straightforward and consistent, but technique adjustments with every randomly generated level. (…)

Goodbye fellow Nokia fans, it’s time for me to move on

Dieter and the folks here in the Smartphone Experts family let me launch Nokia Experts back in January 2009 as a way to share my passion for Nokia and its products and complete the full circle of mobile operating systems for the Smartphone Experts body of sites. Since then I have posted 794 posts and enjoyed sharing my enthusiasm with readers and the wonderful folks at Nokia. However, it is time for me to focus on my work on ZDNet at The Mobile Gadgeteer and Smartphones & Cell Phones blogs, on helping my employees in my day job develop professionally, and on spending time with my family and my daughters as they prepare to enter college and start their own lives.

Back in 2009 Nokia had a major lead in the smartphone market and seemed untouchable, but over the last couple of years we have seen how a large company without a clear focus can lose its way and market share. Back when my buddy Ricky Cadden shut down Symbian-Guru I thought of joining him and have had my own ups and downs over the past year. One thing that kept me going here more than the devices was the people of Nokia and those writing about Nokia and I appreciate their friendship over the years and hope we can continue those relationships for years to come.

I am extremely excited to see the Windows Phone OS running on Nokia hardware and while it may not have a major impact on Nokia’s market share I think it is the right move for them at this time. I do still enjoy Symbian and will keep a few devices around to continue using, but my primary smartphone love right now is Windows Phone and I cannot find much motivation to write about Nokia here on this site. Don’t worry though I will include Nokia coverage more on my ZDNet blog so I may not be focused on it here, but will still cover the company and the devices. Nokia’s Windows Phone devices will be well covered by the great folks at WPCentral and I hope to contribute some articles there and across some other Smartphone Experts sites since I enjoy using devices from every smartphone platform.

Thank you again to all of you readers for you support, questions, and die hard attitude. There were not many of us in the United States who discovered and heavily used Nokia’s Symbian and Maemo devices, but I hope I helped some of you out over the past couple of years.

Xmarks to Continue Syncing Bookmarks, Thanks to Loyal Fans

XmarksXmarks has a new lease on life thanks to the support of its most vocal users.

The free bookmark syncing service had previously announced it was shutting down, but vocal customers signed an online pledge last week promising to pay for a premium version of the service. This made the company take a second look at its options.

Now, according to a new post on the Xmarks blog, it looks like the service itself will continue, even though the company behind Xmarks may still be doomed.

In a new blog post thanking users for their outspoken support, Xmarks CEO James Joaquin, says “Xmarks now has multiple offers from companies ready and willing to take over the service and keep making browser sync better.”

Although Joaquin cautions that no deal has yet been signed, he seems confident that one will emerge in the near future: “With multiple offers on the table we’re pretty confident that Xmarks will continue on with no service interruption,” he says.

That’s good news for the some two million users who rely on Xmarks to sync bookmarks and open tabs between web browsers like Google Chrome, IE, Safari, Firefox, as well as mobile devices.

Many of the users have already but their money where their mouth is — or at least pledged to put their money where their mouth is — using Xmarks’ PledgeBank page to promise their support for a premium version of the service. That’s no doubt had a positive effect on Xmarks perceived value and convinced at least a few companies that service might be worth buying.

Star Wars Fans To NASA: Hyperdrive, and Make it Snappy

Constellation Carina, 20,000 Light Years Away. Warp 9. Engage!

To the layman our modes of space travel can seem a little mundane. Giant boosters strapped to a rocket ship or built into it blast gallons upon gallons of fuel to propel the rocket into space. The closest propulsion engines in existence to the imagination of man are the ion engines that propelled the Deep Space 1 and Dawn missions. It’s the imagination of man that fuels the NASA space agency, and it’s the imagination of man that criticizes it at the same time. Because while the imagination of man might provide the drive to go forward, it also provides an unrealistic expectation of results.

Recently at Star Wars Celebration V in Orlando, FL a group of Star Wars filmmakers and fans took the time out of collecting swag and spending money to stop by the NASA booth. They didn’t stop by just to pick up a pamphlet for the Kennedy Space Center, they stopped by to talk space travel. Specifically, faster than light space travel. You know, warp drives. While warp drives appear to have been used in Star Wars, most are familiar with them from Star Trek. Yes, this is another GeekDad post that mentions both Star Wars and Star Trek.

The fans expressed that they’d like to see warp capabilities within their lifetime. While NASA is currently exploring new technologies, we have a better chance of seeing blaster rifles make an appearance before hyperdrive. Not to forget as well that NASA has direct ties with the military, and a lot of research and development has taken place under a military imposed black cloud. If they are working on a hyperdrive, you can bet your arduino that we won’t know about it until it’s in use.

“I don’t think it’s too much of Star Wars fans to ask NASA to research exotic propulsion,” advanced propulsion expert Richard Obousy told Discovery News. “However, I do think it’s far too high an expectation that NASA will deliver any kind of faster-than-light ‘hyperdrive’ in the foreseeable future.”

Plus, there is a lot to figure out first. Discovering hyperdrive, being able to bend the fabric of the spacetime continuum, and that tricky little thing known among the physics community as “negative energy.” Negative energy is a hypothetical based on the presence of “exotic matter” which is based on something called “tachyons.” Which don’t exist. Though those do sound familiar. Name an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation where they didn’t mention something about a “tachyon.”

So to be specific, there are two possible modes of interstellar space travel. Either warp drive or wormholes. So the presumption is that hyperdrive is the same as warp drive, even though the Millennium Falcon has a Isu-Sim SSP05 hyperdrive generator. While it seemed that Sisko and the crew of the Defiant took their sweet time crossing through that wormhole, it should have been instantaneous, according to current theories about wormholes. However, wormholes don’t exist within the current laws of physics. Warp drive does, at least theoretically within the laws of physics it’s more plausible than creating wormholes.

“Warp drives are extremely speculative at this stage, and it would be irresponsible of me to suggest that a warp drive could ever be built,” Obousy added. “What does seem true, however, is that warp drives are allowed to exist within the known laws of physics, and can therefore be explored and investigated in a rigorous and scientific manner.”

Sadly, Star Wars and Star Trek fans are going to have some waiting to do. If scientists are working on warp drive capabilities, they are doing it in their spare time. Until someone comes up with a working theory, and not some drunk guy helped by the Enterprise crew, we aren’t going to be warping anytime soon. Not to mention the theories surrounding the actual bending of the space and the time. While it may seem like moments, hours or days to someone traveling at warp speed, it could be thousands of years passing outside of the warp bubble.

Recently we posted a piece questioning our place in the universe. When you consider Star Wars fans asking NASA for a warp drive, you have to consider the inhabitants of the universe they want to travel to. Planets like Hoth, Tattooine don’t seem like much fun. Then consider the Star Trek universe. Romulans, Klingons – the Borg! You know what NASA, if you are working on a warp drive, take your time. I don’t want to run into the Imperial Empire or the Borg anytime soon.

BBM connects fans in greatest World Cup moments – RIM releases BlackBerry Messenger usage stats

BM connects fans in greatest World Cup moments - RIM releases BlackBerry messenger usage stats

With Research In Motions semi new marketing push for BlackBerry Messenger, they have opened the doors a little to give us all a sneak peek at some statistics regarding how some folks have been using BlackBerry Messenger. The case scenario, World Cup 2010 this time around. Looking at the stats, a lot of people were making use of BlackBerry Messenger throughout the World Cup 2010 for sure.

Over the past month, RIM saw a clear correlation between BBM traffic and significant events during the World Cup as fans shared their delights and despairs in real time with friends and family during live match action.

For example, during a thrilling World Cup final between the Netherlands and Spain on Sunday at Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg, Spanish International and FC Barcelona Midfielder Andrés Iniesta scored the winning goal only three minutes before the end of extra-time, which as the lone goal of the match crowned Spain Champions of the tournament.  At the time of this exciting goal, that was viewed around the world, BlackBerry Messenger traffic increased immediately by 280% as virtual communities of fans shared their reactions through BBM.

Throughout the World Cup, there were several other notable moments that correlated with BBM traffic. Some of the most significant included:

  • USA v England, June 12th (Match Day 2):  traffic spiked 35% globally at the time of the first goal, scored by England.
  • Netherlands v Brazil, July 2nd (Match Day 20):  traffic jumped by 122% globally at the time of the second goal, scored by the Netherlands.
  • Argentina v Germany, July 3rd (Match Day 21): traffic rose by 178% globally at the time of the 3rd German goal.

These numbers give us all a great look into how BBM was used. Certainly, Research In Motion has an awesome thing with BlackBerry Messenger. Now, I don’t want to take anything away from this but quite honestly, my BlackBerry Messenger hasn’t worked right in the past three days. Messages are not being delivered and if they are, they have been delayed. Some by mins, most by hours and according to my Twitter followers I’m not the only one with this issue. Yet, no information has been posted about that. Interesting this issue arises after the World Cup. Are you having issues with your BlackBerry Messenger currently? Let us know in the comments if you are folks.

Android fans: “Apple, Thank you for the iPad!”

As you might have heard, today lots of early adopters are going to get their hands on the new Apple iPad. As Android fans we should not care about it but if you think about it, it is a great news for Android.

A while back (late 2007), Apple released a new type of phone that marked the start of a new era with touch screen phones.  Now the general consumer is using their phone to check email, look at web pages, install apps, etc.   Prior to the Phone there was not that much going on in smart phones.  Well, there are a few early attempts by Microsoft to fit Windows in mobile devices.

Since the iPhone, each Android handset reviewed gets compared and looked at as potential “iPhone” killers in the mainstream media.  Verizon clearly used the iPhone to promote the Droid with their iDon’t campaign.  As Android fans, it is easy for us to do the comparison to explain what our phone can do to non-techies. You can just start by saying “It is like an iPhone but it also can run apps in the background, you can remove the battery, it has a keyboard…” and so on.

Thanks, again, to Apple, the same thing will happen with the iPad. There are few tablets already released and upcoming running Android: Asus,Kogan, Archos, Google, WePad (my favorite!) and all of them will benefit from the hype surrounding the iPad. Even if they might never sell in the same volume of units as Apple (like the iPhone), overall they will do well just because the iPad will do well. I know that I would never own (certainly not buy!) an iPad but I would certainly consider a WePad and if I have one and need to explain to non-techies, I would be able to start by: “It is like the Apple iPad but better because…”.

Do you agree? Will Apple’s iPad help usher in an era of tablets?  Will Android benefit?  I would like to read your comments…

Early this morning in an unprecedented email to Apple Shareholders, Apple CEO Steve Jobs shares vital information regarding the iPhone and it’s future. In an AndroidGuys exclusive, our source has forw…
