Last.fm Will No Longer Allow Free Streaming to Mobile Devices

I’m a big fan of Pandora internet radio service on my Android phone, but I’ve experimented with a little Slacker and Last.fm. Last.fm has been available for free, ad-supported, on a myriad of platforms – Xbox, desktop, and various mobile devices. Sadly, it has been determined by the Last.fm management that it is not cost-effective to continue to offer free versions on all platforms. The only services that will remain available in free versions will be Xbox Live and Windows Phone 7, as well as the desktop version.

So, my Android-using friends…if you use the free version of Last.fm on your Android phone, it will be coming to an end on February 15th. While Last.fm has to maintain their bottom line, it’s always a shame to see free services come to an end. So enjoy this service while you can, because you’ve got about a week left!

Bowl Game Countdown

Are you one of the millions of people that are super excited about the SuperBowl this weekend?! Developer LSphone has come out with Bowl Game Countdown to keep track of the hours until the big game. There are optional notifications, so the app will chime and/or vibe 2 hours before the game, then 1 hour, half an hour, and 15 minutes before the scheduled start time. One icon is included, a football, but you can add any image you like as the icon, and the time and date is fully customizable, so you can use this app well beyond the big game. Available for devices running OS 4.3 and up (including BB6) and FREE, this app is a winner no matter which team you’re rooting for! Samsung Galaxy S Giorgio Armani is Free on Contract in UK

galaxy_s_armani

The Samsung Galaxy S Giorgio Armani Edition is now available in the UK. It will take you’re girlfriend out on dates, whisper sweet nothings in her ear, and tell you that “you look fabulous!” as you gaze into it’s shiny mirror-like touchscreen.

Other than that, it’s your standard Samsung Galaxy S smartphone with Giorgio Armani branding on it. Seriously. If you feel compelled to get one of these, it’s worth it for free, because its the same as it’s unsexy brothers with a little UI tweaking. Might as well get a Galaxy S with some style at that price! That’s just my take on it of course.

Here’s a look at the specs just to convince you.

02′s Wi-Fi Cloud Goes Free

The UK’s mobile operator O2, a subsidiary of Spanish broadband and telecommunications provider Telefónica, which is big in Europe and Latin America, is planning to deploy 13,000 Wi-Fi hotspots over the next two years — with free internet access.

Initially the hotspots will be available in 450, O2-owned sites, reports the BBC, but will be expanded to other locations, including shops and restaurants. The network won’t just be for O2 customers: anyone with a mobile phone will be able to sign up and use the service, reports The Register. Free internet access will be paid for by venue advertising.

O2 already offers its premium subscribers access to hotspots run by The Cloud and BT OpenZone. That totals around 7,500 hotspots. Those deals will remain in place while O2 deploys its new free-to-all Wi-Fi network.

O2 Wi-Fi, will eventually replace the mobile operator’s existing 450 O2 Cloud hotspots, the company said in its announcement on Wednesday. It has promised that by 2013, it will at least double the number of existing premium hotspots offered by BT OpenZone and The Cloud, or close to 13,000, according to the company.

BT’s OpenZone and Fon networks are currently the biggest networks in the UK. BT’s Fon network offers WiFi connections that piggyback on BT home broadband networks. But O2 said that its competing service would offer “premium public hotspots, as opposed to using residential connections with limited bandwidth” – a swipe at FON. The Cloud claims to have around 22,000 hotspots internationally, while Virgin Media is also toying with the idea of creating a nationwide wi-fi network, reports the BBC.

Users wanting to take advantage will need to provide a mobile phone number, from any network, which will be confirmed with a text message. O2 then links the number to the MAC code (unique identity) of the handset, enabling it to automatically authorize future connections as well as spotting when the customer enters a hotspot area – enabling the delivery of advertising by text message or MMS. O2 says it expects venues hosting the service will pay for it, so targeted advertising is just a sideline, said the company.

Games, Games and More Games – All Free

Often times we focus all our efforts on finding the latest and greatest games from top developers and companies. The beautiful thing about the Android market is we have no lack of applications. Some would argue that it is often flooded with garbage, others back it up as a way to stay open. No matter how you look at it, there is always something wonderful to find.

In this case it’s a company called href="http://www.appbrain.com/browse/dev/Defianted+Development">Defianted Development. Not to be confused with Defiant Development, who brought us “ href="http://androidspin.com/2010/12/15/quick-look-rocket-bunnies-an-action-puzzle-game-that-rocks/" target="_blank">Rocket Bunnies.” Still, they have brought us a lot of game applications that I feel have slipped under the radar of most users. With so many applications, it is hard to focus on just one or a couple. I’ll give you a look into just a few here in this article and might follow up with another later next week.

The company has focused primarily on moving games from needing an emulator to being a standalone application. That is a very novel idea. It should help some of the less technical-minded avoid the trouble of searching for BIOS and ROMs. Although, judging from the comments on the market, some of these seem to be a hit and miss. I can’t find anything that narrows it down to a certain device or potential user error. I have personally had no issues with any of their applications.

Enough about that. Let’s take a look at some games already!

style="text-align: center;"> class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-46566" title="Game 1" src="http://androidspin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Game-11-180x300.png" alt="" width="180" height="300" /> class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-46568" title="Game3" src="http://androidspin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Game3-180x300.png" alt="" width="180" height="300" /> class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-46569" title="Game2" src="http://androidspin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Game2-180x300.png" alt="" width="180" height="300" />

style="text-align: left;">Near as I have been able to tell, the games range from Nintendo, Snes, Gameboy color and Playstation. That doesn’t mean there aren’t others out there.

style="text-align: left;">For instance Final Fantasy 3 is a Playstation game, so your controls will look like this:

style="text-align: center;"> class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-46573" title="Game2a" src="http://androidspin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Game2a-300x180.png" alt="" width="300" height="180" /> class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-46574" title="Game2b" src="http://androidspin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Game2b-300x180.png" alt="" width="300" height="180" />

style="text-align: left;">Many people have complained about the ads that service the top of the screen. If you look very closely you will see a small ‘X’ in the top left of the ad, simply close it. Problem solved. I don’t even know how many of these I have installed, but they have all given me hours of fun. I would love to riddle you with QR codes left and right, but the truth of the matter is, they have something like a hundred apps out. Do the usual below, and then check out more apps by the developer. I haven’t seen a single one that costs anything. Have fun and happy hunting.

style="text-align: left;">Click or scan the QRCode below to find out more information about the Final Fantasy III application.

Quick Look Game: Restaurant Story-It’s FREE

Restaurant Story takes on the same sort of idea as Game Dev Story but with a lot more control.

You are a new restaurant owner with limited money and limited room. You start out with a simple 3 seater, I call it a bistro, and build up from there. You have control over the food you serve, the floor tiles, wall colors and wall decorations. You can buy more chairs and tables and expand to larger buildings. The game is fairly flexible. File size is fairly large coming in at 14. 5 MBs. You must have internet to play the game. This may sound strange, but it is also very necessary so you can share your restaurants with friends online.

With this game already running over 250,000 downloads and a consistent 4 star rating, this is a must have game. Feel free to pick it up below and build your restaurant empire today.

Click or Scan the QRCode below to find out more information about the Restaurant Story application.

Free Newegg Mobile app for BlackBerry now available in BlackBerry App World

Free Newegg app for BlackBerry now available in BlackBerry App World

Like buying electronics? Of course you do, everyone does at some point. Newegg, has made the process of buying electronics from them on the go even easier for better or for worse. They’ve just released a mobile app to BlackBerry App World which allows you to browse and purchase items directly from their site on your BlackBerry smartphone. Some of the key features for the app:

  • Comprehensive product specifications.
  • 1.7+ millions customer reviews.
  • Detailed item image gallery.
  • Quick and simple shopping flow.
  • Simple and quick search function.
  • Good for deal hunting: Shell Shockers, Daily Deals and Free Shipping.
  • All purchases made on Newegg Mobile are routed through Newegg’s secure servers.

The sad news? Well, despite BlackBerry App World indicating that it is indeed available for all devices, it is not. Although I did not test all devices, I can confirm it’s not yet available for the BlackBerry Torch (unless it’s just blocking me in Canada). Which really, is fine with me at this point. The last thing i need in my life is an easier way to buy electronics. But if you’re looking to spend  some of that cash you got for the Holidays then by all means, check the app out. Some great deals are to be had on Newegg.

Free Gameloft Game – Hero of Sparta, Today Only

It’s no secret that Gameloft makes some of the best Android games you can get. Usually running $4-$6, Gameloft features a lot of HD games that both look great, and play well. You may remember that they gave away a copy of Dungeon Hunter HD earlier this month. Today’s offer is similarly great, only it’s more reminiscent of Spartacus than King Arthur. Today, and today only, you can get a free copy of Hero of Sparta from Gameloft. If you’ve played Dungeon Hunter, the gameplay will feel familiar — it’s a very similar style. If you haven’t played either, catch the trailer below, or just jump straight to the source link and start downloading! At a price of NOTHING, you can afford to take a risk. (Note: the game may change on you once you select your phone. If it does, just re-select the free game from the list of games toward the bottom of the screen, and begin your download.)

Navfree USA: Free Turn-by-Turn Navigation App

Navmii’s Navfree USA is a free alternative to the current selection of iPhone-based turn-by-turn GPS navigation apps. It’s also available for Android and Nokia phones.

Because the maps are stored on-board, the device doesn’t need a constant connection. Navfree USA is compatible with the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, and takes advantage of the OpenStreetMap project for in-app maps, spoken turn-by-turn directions, offers 3D and 3D views, pedestrian and driving routes, in-app Google searches, and more.

The company also plans to supplement the free app with paid in-app purchases of additional features such as upgrading to “premium” maps from commercial vendor TeleAtlas, data from safety cameras, and traffic information.

Navfree USA is available for free on the App Store, and requires an iOS device running 4.0 or later.
