MyTouch 3G Slide FroYo Available

The successor to the MyTouch 3G, the Slide, has finally gotten an official taste of soft serve. The only catch is that it isn’t an OTA and users will need to make the effort to install it manually; though HTC has provided all of the neccesarry tools on their website.

Is this a welcome addition, or too little too late for a device that is closing in on its first birthday?

Rumor: Froyo Update for Epic 4G Still On for February 21st; Sanyo Zio, Too

This image has no alt text

The Froyo rumors just keep on rolling, don’t they? BGR’s saying that the Samsung Epic 4G’s Android 2.2 upgrade is still on for the 21st. We’ve heard that one before, but that was build EA17 – EB13 is the latest and all signs point to it being final. They’re also saying the Sanyo Zio should get its 2.2 upgrade on that same day, and that it’ll roll out over a 5-day period. Sweet! Let us know if all this ends up being true.

Dev Community Brings Froyo to Milestone XT720

When we say “Dev Community, ” we usually mean XDA-Developers, and this case is no exception.  The developers over at XDA have once again done something that the manufacturer hasn’t — brought Android 2.2 to the Motorola Milestone XT720.  User Dexter_nlb has posted a ROM that reportedly has very few issues functioning as a stable Froyo ROM. Given that Motorola themselves proclaimed this phone will remain stuck with Eclair as the OS, we’re extra happy to see this coming together from the developer community.

AT&T support page showing Samsung Captivate running Froyo, is update on the way?

Although Samsung has become quite notorious with owners of Samsung Android devices for not sending out updates to their Android devices nearly as often as they should, a small ounce of hope was discovered. What you’re seeing in the picture above is a screenshot of the Samsung Captivate running Android 2.2, otherwise known as Froyo. This was found on the AT&T support page for the Samsung Captivate, in the section that describes how to find the Captivate’s firmware version and operating system.

With many other Android phones already running Froyo and Gingerbread already going public, it seems as though the Captivate would never get the Froyo update. But, this lucky find does shed a small ray of hope on the situation for Captivate users wanting Android 2.2. Hopefully this means that the Froyo update is on the way.

You can check out the support page by clicking the source link below. Be sure to leave your thoughts and opinions in the comments.

Rumors Saying Froyo Coming to Sprint’s Epic 4G Feb 21

Rumors are exactly that — just rumors.  We don’t know anything for sure, but there’s been a lot of talk lately about the Froyo update coming to the Epic4G, specifically…but we think all Galaxy S phones will be following close behind.  Tipsters who claim to have an inside track are saying that the Sprint Epic 4G will be getting some Froyo love in less than two weeks, to be delivered on February 21.  Supposedly Samsung and Sprint are embracing version EA17 and are about ready to call it official, and hopefully we’ll be seeing it named legit in here in about 13 days.

Samsung Fascinate gets Froyo the XDA developers way

It’s Unofficial – the Samsung Fascinate is finally running Froyo, albeit from the bright minds over at XDA-Developers.  User “punk.kaos” managed to compile together the latest leaked Froyo ROM (DL30) for the Fascinate and has it available for download.  It’s pre-rooted, and has all the normal Verizon/Samsung bloatware included so you can get the full experience of removing it as soon as the system loads!

Keep in mind that installing your own ROM can brick your phone if done improperly, so tinker at your own risk – especially since this dev is offering absolutely no support (or even requests for that matter) – so mod with caution!  Head on over to the xda-developers forum to grab it and let us know how it works out for you in the comments!

The update is build number DL30 and features Froyo with full TouchWiz integration. The only alteration to the ROM in question is that comes pre-rooted.

Froyo comes to Samsung Transform

samtransform froyo

The Samsung Transform is the latest to get Android 2.2 under it’s belt, not officially, but sort of. SDX Developers member Vampirefo has put all the instructions you need to get Froyo working on your Transform. As always, we feel the need to warn you that any tinkering with the code on your device could make it as useless as tanning bed in Africa.

If you do this to your Samsung Transform and happen to notice any issues, please go to the same forum at the source link below and comment on your findings to help the developer fix any unforeseen issues. This is still in testing, but it is more or less working, even if it doesn’t help your overall speed. Not much you can do there with a hardware bottleneck for specs.

Samsung Fascinate Froyo Build Teased By Developers

A couple of developers have tweeted on their Twitter accounts that they’re currently working on an official Froyo build for Samsung’s Fascinate.  However, it’s not ready for you just yet, so please do forgive me for the teaser.  But be patient folks, you’ve been waiting this long!  Either one should be around the corner soon.  The reason we’re even running with this post is because we find it interesting to note, which will come first?  The official update from Samsung themselves?  Or, the @punkkaos and friends’ build?  The race is on.  It should be “Fascinating”, get it?  Alright, alright, geez.  Tough crowd.  Will you take the build if it comes before the official Samsung/Verizon update?  Let us know what you think in the comments below.

T-Mobile and Samsung Offer Froyo Update KA6 to Vibrant Owners via Mini Kies

Galaxy S owners are all eagerly awaiting the Froyo update, and T-Mobile said they would be rolling the update out to their customers. However, a post in the T-Mobile forums indicates that this update won’t be going out over-the-air after all, but instead will be available by download via the Mini Kies tool. At this point, this is the only option for Vibrant owners wanting to update to Froyo, and they’re saying that the update won’t be OTA at any point down the road. That’s not to say that a later update might not be sent out that will include Froyo, but don’t expect to see KA6 being pushed out to your device.

Hell Freezes Over, Vibrant Gets Froyo Update

Whether or not you believe that all the community outrage at the lack of a Froyo update for the Samsung/T-Mo Vibrant did any good, the update is finally here.

As of right now, if you own a T-Mo Vibrant, you can download the 2.2 Froyo update for your phone using the Kies Mini software that Sammy uses to push builds to devices.  If you have questions you can visit the T-Mo discussion thread by clicking here.

We originally thought that this would be an OTA upgrade, but I am glad to see it as a download so people can get it when they are ready (NOW).

Let us know how the upgrade process goes.

Sprint and T-Mobile Speak Out About Froyo Updates for Galaxy S: Coming Soon

There was a rumor going ’round that the US-based Galaxy S phones weren’t going to see the Froyo update, and that it was a cost/political issue.   While we never really bought it here at Talkandroid, it was a popular rumor until a few days ago, when Phonescoop reported otherwise. We were pleased to hear that rumor was bogus, not only because it never really made sense, but because it would’ve been pretty underhanded of everyone involved. Well, today, both T-Mobile and Sprint have made statements regarding Froyo updates on their Galaxy S devices.

LG Ally finally getting Froyo soon?

LG Ally owners out there that have been patiently waiting for a Froyo update might not have to wait much longer. Leaked documents have revealed that the update is ready to roll, although they do not specify as to when they may start being pushed.

Some owners may be wondering if there is a serving of Gingerbread on the horizon for the Ally. However, given the age of the device and not to mention the time it took to get Froyo ready, I would not count on a 2.3 update for the Ally. We’ll be on the lookout for a  clear-cut release date for the update, so stay tuned.

Fuel to the Fire: Vibrant Plus to Have Gingerbread, Not Froyo?

Wow. That’s all I can really say about Samsung at this point. Wow. First we get leaked images and specs of the Vibrant Plus, which is supposed to be running Froyo, HSPA+, and a front-facing camera. Then someone from Samsung explains that they charge a carrier for pretty much any kind of update, and now this. We just got word from the guys over at BoyGeniusReport that’s sure to make a lot more Vibrant owners a lot angrier. They’ve gotten a photo of the Vibrant Plus/Vibrant 4G, and it’s clearly running.. wait for it.. Gingerbread! Yeah, Samsung really went there. The Vibrant Plus could ship with Gingerbread, which is 2 steps up from the quickly aging Eclair that the current Vibrant is using.

Now, we can’t confirm this, but they say their source is trusted, so we’ll believe it.. for now.  More on this as it develops. So what do you AndroidGuys think about this? Sound off in the comments below!

LG Optmus 2X Quadrant: How Does It Fare With Froyo?

We haven’t seen a fully official build of the LG Optimus 2X yet, but we know that it’s going to be sporting some pretty impressive hardware. At CES, LG showed off its full lineup of the Optimus line, and it was about as powerful as anything we’ve seen. LG will be bringing a lot to the table in the hardware department, in both the Optimus 2X and the Optimus Black. Even though this is a pre-production unit, it does quite well on the benchmarks. Video below.

Samsung’s Response to Vibrant Froyo Debacle Won’t Ease Owners’ Frustration

This image has no alt text

Ever since a wild rumor surfaced claiming Samsung and T-Mobile are purposefully withholding the upgrade to Android 2.2 (Froyo) for the Samsung Vibrant in order to boost anticipation for the Samsung Vibrant 4G, the internet has been ablaze with hate only rivaled by the uproar over undelivered but promised updates for the Samsung Behold II. A class action lawsuit and Twitter trend of #NeverAgain when tweeting out Samsung complaints seem to be only the start, and Samsung’s newly issued statement regarding the matter won’t do much to slow down the hate.

“Samsung Mobile does not comment on rumors or speculation. With regard to the Froyo update, we recently issued the following statement: “Samsung feels it is important to make the Android 2.2/Froyo upgrade available only after we feel that we can give the millions of U.S. Galaxy S owners a simple and reliable upgrade experience. Due to the complexity and unique functionality of each Galaxy S device, we are performing additional testing and are working to make the Android 2.2/Froyo upgrade available to all U.S. Galaxy S owners, including the Samsung Vibrant, as soon as possible.”

When asked for comment by CNET, T-Mobile simply referred back to Samsung’s verbiage. Pretty non-comittal words coming from the camp that is supposedly withholding these updates. Given their history of poorly-executed Android upgrades you’d think Samsung would make an honest effort to get Froyo out, so perhaps it is really just a case of getting all of their ducks in a row across carriers and devices before releasing Android 2.2 in the US. We’d hate to jump on board with such a vicious rumor, especially if it is simply that: a viscous rumor.

Samsung Today: Still Running Froyo Tests for Galaxy S; Nexus S with Super-LCD for Europe Coming?

This image has no alt text

We’re well into 2011 by now and most of you US-based Galaxy S owners still have yet to see Froyo. (Officially, anyway.) What the heck is going on with that? Samsung’s Twitter account tweeted that they wanted users to have a simple and reliable upgrade – the type of hesitation you’d expect from Samsung considering past upgrades didn’t go too smoothly for a lot of users of their other phones.

The second line of the tweet states that they “[are] running tests due to complexity [and] unique functionality.” Translation: “Getting around TouchWiz is tougher than we thought it’d be.” That’s not really fair to say, though: European variants have had the upgrade for quite some time. Most will tell you that the carriers are to blame, and a lot of that blame does fall on them. Even Sony Ericsson admitted to as much when they hadn’t committed to a date for the Xperia X10′s Eclair upgrade. It’s entirely possible that Samsung is being treated the same way by all four major carriers.

So they still can’t commit to a date, but I think it’s about time we cut them some slack – at least direct some of your anger toward the carriers.

In lighter news, though, the Nexus S could soon be headed to Europe as a device being named the GT-I90003 has recently been approved by the Global Certification Forum. The Unwired’s Arne Hesse has it from a trusted source of his that this device – unlike the Nexus S released here in the states – would be coming with a Super-LCD display as opposed to a Super AMOLED. Doesn’t sound too farfetch’d considering the Russian version is said to be getting the same treatment. The only thing we’re still waiting for is a release date and pricing, but I’m sure that isn’t long off.
