Froyo update still coming for all Galaxy S owners in US

samsungtweets

Samsung Galaxy S owners in the US are still waiting for their promised upgrade to Froyo regardless of what carrier they are with. Samsung however, states they are still testing out a quick upgrade for all Galaxy S owners, due to the complexity of Android 2.2 versus Android 2.1, this has taken some time and patience.

After the upgrade was released in Canada, then pulled back due to bad complaints from users, Samsung wants to ensure things go better in the US. Thanks Canada for being the live testing ground. Bad Samsung.

Samsung’s U.S. Galaxy S sites are starting to show Froyo

Ok, we know Android 2.2 should be hitting the U.S. versions of Samsung Galaxy S phones soon.  I mean come on, Canada has their update being rolled out to the Vibrant and Fascinate already. It may be a tease, but now we are starting to get mixed messages on the U.S. Galaxy S phone product sites as seen above.  This appears only on the Epic 4G, Fascinate, and Vibrant product pages, whereas the Captivate and Continuum remain confident in their 2.1 existence.

Sure, it could be a typo, but with Gingerbread already skipping around in the freshly dropped snow, Froyo should be in the park handing out its delicious treat as well.  Here’s to hoping this 2.2 roll out will hit your Samsung Galaxy S phone soon, and that the graphics guy for the site will get those green images updated as soon as he gets back from vacation.

Update:  Samsung has updated their product pages and they now display Android 2.1OS.  Sigh.

Froyo Update Available for Samsung Vibrant and Fascinate in Canada

samsung-galaxy

Canadian owners of the Samsung Vibrant and Fascinate can be happy finally as Samsung has made the Froyo update available for users on Telus, Sasktel, Vrigin Mobile and Bell Canada!

Let’s hope that Samsung hasn’t included any other bugs in this update as the last Froyo update was pulled by Samsung after hearing about issues with microSD storage. The update should be available through Samsung Kies software for the Galaxy S family. Enjoy!

Verizon Expecting Froyo On The Fascinate By The New Year?

A warning to the wise, take this one with a grain of salt.  It looks like the guys over at Android Central caught wind of an internal spec’s comparison sheet, detailing expectations of the Fascinate receiving Adobe Flash by the end of 2010.  Well, that’s about a week away and the device requires at least 2.2 to run the application. Anyone receive it yet?   We didn’t think so.  So, we highly doubt that this is an up to date document.  To further confirm that, the document shows that the Droid X is sporting Android 2.1.  The X received 2.2 back in September.  So, sorry if we got your hopes up.  Hang in there Fascinate lovers.  There’s always the comments below if you want to vent.

Windows 7 ExoPC gets hacked to run Froyo

It seems that a dedicated ExoPC fan has figured out how to dual boot the device with Android 2.2. The individual has not released a whole lot of detail about how he did it, but as you can see he has certainly done it. Hopefully some better instructions will become available so other users can get their hands on this, but for now check out a video demonstration after the break.

Samsung Intercept bricking from Froyo update? Found a FIX for you!

We have seen some reports from around the web about the latest update for the Samsung Intercept actually causing your device to brick or freeze. Which is extremely horrible considering the update was also the much anticipated Froyo 2.2 update. If you happen to be some of the unlucky who’s device is now inoperable because of the latest OTA have no fear.

Sprint has their hands on the update.zip file that will solve your issues and unbrick your device. They have been reported to have done this to many devices in stores and over the phone and successfully unbricked all devices using this file. You absolutely must have received the latest Froyo update first to use this solution.

1. Click on the link below and save it to an SD card
2. Put the SD card in phone
3. Remove battery
4. Replace battery
5. Hold Volume Down, Talk and End until “ Android system recovery” screen comes up
6. Scroll down to the second option “apply sdcard:update.zip”
7. Press enter
8. Find something else to do for about ten minutes while the phone fixes itself and restarts

Update.zip FIX file

Thats it! should be good to go. We always say you take any responsibility for any damages you do to your device using our information. The funny thing is you didn’t damage your phone, Samsung and Sprint did. If your phone is frozen then it sure wouldn’t hurt to try and fix it.

Sprint Insider: Samsung fixed Froyo update bugs for Intercept, safe to download

Remember last weekend, when we gave you the inside scoop on how the new Froyo update for the Samsung Intercept was bricking phones? According to the same insider, Samsung has pulled the defective update, squashed the bugs, and re-released the software. What does this mean for you? It means that, if you haven’t already downloaded the update, you should be safe to do so now. However, if you have downloaded the update and it has bricked your phone, you’ll have to take it into a Sprint store. The good news there is that, according to our inside tech, Sprint has discovered a software based fix, and should be able to get you out the door relatively painlessly.

What has your experience been with the update? Be sure to let us know in the comments!

Thanks Robert!

FroYo for Intercept Griefing Consumers

This image has no alt text

The boys over at Talk Android got some information that may pertain to a lot of you; yes, I’ve been browsing over the grumblings regarding this in the announcement post. But the short and long of it is that Sprint knows the update is causing some serious bloody headaches, and the official word seems to be “if you can’t fix it, replace it”.

Also mentioned is a tip to just not upgrade the device for the time being. Perhaps Samsung will pull the update, fix the bugs and relaunch it.

It may be redundant to ask this, but just how many Intercept users out there have been having issues with FroYo?

Skifta: DLNA Support For FroYo and Above

This image has no alt text

SkiftaHere’s something that I’ve been waiting for since I got into DLNA, and I know that this isn’t the first solution out there. A client/server for my beloved Android. This is still in its infancy, but it’s definitely a window to what is to come.

After downloading the application from the Market and setting up an account that takes mere seconds, I found the easiest combination to get anything working was to use the Android device as the server and a PS3 as your client. Three steps to set everything up on the phone and the PS3 should detect the “Skifta” server within 60 seconds.

For now we’re looking at WiFi only. But those of you familiar with another favorite of mine, GMote, know that it’s definitely possible to get it going over the carrier’s network.

For all of you developers out there, Skifta has a developer program and an SDK ready to go.

VirginMobile and SaskTel Join Bell in Froyo Update for Samsung Galaxy S

This image has no alt text

samsungfroyosask

Recently we reported that Bell’s Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant began receiving its update to Android 2.2, and now Samsung is tweeting as much, also revealing that updates for the phone on Virgin Mobile and SaskTel are also now available.

As is typical with Samsung’s updates, they have decided to forego the over-the-air method in favor of their own Kies software. The general consensus is that is a big drag, but it’s a small price to pay for an updated and improved Android OS.

Rumor: Sprint Instructing Techs to Flash Epics with Leaked Froyo Back to Eclair

Not every rumor can be believed, obviously. That said, this one is plausible. It’s being reported that Sprint is not-so-subtly telling its technicians that if an Epic comes in running the leaked version of Froyo that they are to flash it back to stock Eclair. Does this only apply to phones that are being wiped anyway, or is it across the board? Part of me understands Sprint’s logic, as anytime you’re running a custom ROM you have to be aware that you are not under your carrier’s umbrella anymore. At the same time, one would hope that Sprint would respect their customers’ data enough that they wouldn’t be encouraging techs to wipe phones without good cause.

Now I’ll reiterate that this hasn’t been confirmed. If we can get any confirmation or denial we’ll update this story.

Bell, Virgin Mobile and SaskTel Galaxy S Vibrant gets Froyo

Galaxy S Vibrant owners with Bell, Virgin Mobile, and SaskTel are now able to grab the Froyo update for their device. Unfortunately, it looks like the only way to do this is by using Samsung Kies, so if you were expecting an OTA it looks like you’re out of luck.

The process looks to be a little long, so if you haven’t downloaded Kies and are unsure how to use it, Samsung has provided a full set of instructions and a download link here (including pictures). Happy Froyoing everyone!

Dell confirms Froyo delay for Dell Streak

Although there is not a lot to say here other than the fact the Dell has confirmed that the Android 2.2 update for the Dell Streak has been delayed due to AT&T. It appears once again that AT&T is the culprit in delaying the update. On a small note, I really wished carriers would get there stuff together in order to provide updates in a timely manner, however life ain’t always what you want it. Dell is stating that Dell Streak users should see Android 2.2 (Froyo) sometime next month. Let’s hope so for all you out there.

Are you tired of all these carriers holding up the update process? Do you wish the manufacturer would allow you to download the update form them once it is available? Let us know what you think about this in the comment’s below.

Bell releasing 2.2 Froyo for Galaxy S Devices

Bell mobility in Canada is releasing the Froyo update for its Galaxy S device. This is great news for them, not so great news still for the U.S. variants. Bell is strongly requesting its customers to update their software to the latest complete build.

With 2.2 bringing in many fixes and updates to solve the common issues that plagued the Canadian variant, this should make many of you very happy to hear.

  • Froyo 2.2 update will solve the freezing and crashing issues.
  • Better browsing and device processor speed.
  • Improved security
  • Exchange calendar support
  • Global Address list look up

Of course you are also getting all the goodness of Froyo as well, such as adobe flash. Although the poster does state December 10th, the update is ready now. This update will not be an over the air (OTA) update unfortunately. The process is being handled through the Samsung KIES application. If you wish to proceed and get this update rolling onto your device feel free to follow the step-by-step guide found on Bells website HERE.

Be sure to let us know if things went smoothly for you or not. I am curious to see if a firmware update like this could be the best option for Samsung to get Froyo to all of our Galaxy S devices.

HTC Legend and Wildfire get a firmware update, is Froyo next?

With all the rage right now about Gingerbread, it’s pretty easy to forget that some people or still waiting to see Froyo on their device. The HTC Legend and Wildfire are two devices in that camp, but a recent firmware update may indicate that 2.2 is on the way. The Wildfire OTA brings it up to firmware version 1.37.405.1, whereas the Legend update gets it up to 2.05.405.2. HTC has said that the Legend and Wildfire would both get Froyo before the year’s end, so let’s hope they weren’t lying.

If you have not yet seen the update, you can check manually by Settings > About phone > System software updates and hit check now.

Epic Froyo Update Fake?

Yesterday we told you about an Epic 4G Froyo update that was sent out to some Epic owners. Well, we’ve got an official statement posted in the Epic forums by Sprint, who claims that the update distributed was a test build, and that it wasn’t approved software for release. How it got out is beyond us, but Sprint is urging Epic users not to download the upgrade, as it may be faulty or harmful to their device. They’re still working on the official update with Samsung, but are “unable to communicate a firm delivery date”. If you haven’t installed the update, we suggest you don’t do so until further notice. Sprint tells us that when the official update is ready, users will receive a notification to download it. Check out the full statement after the break

This Hour in Nexus S & Gingerbread: New Keyboard Available for Rooted Froyo Users, Nexus S UK Pricing Unveiled, Why “Nexus 2″ Wasn’t Used, Plus More

This image has no alt text

Oh. My. God. I cannot keep up with the flood of news regarding the Nexus S and Gingerbread coming through our ship’s lower deck, as of late. But we’ll fight through it! Another hour has gone by and even more tidbits from the blogosphere have trickled in. Firstly, how about something tangible from the SDK image to get onto your current non-Gingerbread phones?

gingerbread-keyboard

Droid-Life’s been able to grab the new software keyboard seen on various videos and pictures. While it still isn’t the best looking keyboard we’ve ever seen, it looks to be a huge improvement over the old stock offering. Peter Alfonso – the man behind the fabled Bugless Beast – has thrown the .zip file up here. (Yes, this means you do need to be rooted, and due to integrated Voice Search controls, you’ll need Froyo.)

1. Download .zip file HERE
2. Place on root of SD Card and boot into Recovery.
3. Install .zip as you would themes etc.
4. Reboot and select “Android Keyboard” under Input Method and you are good to go.

*Note* – DX users, “In Clockwork, go to mounts and storage>mount system and then back to install .zip from sd card”.

In other keyboard news, it has been discovered that the KeyEvent class in the Android SDK has new-found support for what looks to be gaming buttons. (A, B, C, L1, L2, R1, R2, Start, Select, X, Y, and Z.) Sounds pretty darn convenient for the folks at Sony Ericsson who are to be bringing out a new device (which they aren’t calling the PlayStation Phone) with a gamepad.

Awesome! Android Police has also taken the new build for a spin in their emulator. Our friend Artem states that the Gingerbread’s emulator instance is staggeringly slow compared to Froyo’s and Donut’s, but we hear that this is the fastest version of Gingerbread yet. Could just be an issue with the emulator or SDK image. Go ahead and check it out over there for the full suite of images and accompanying impressions.

nexus_s_carphone_warehouse-small

Europeans – specifically those in the UK, for now – will be happy to know that Carphone Warehouse is carrying the Nexus S starting at the end of December. And unlike us poor souls here in the states, you guys can grab it up for free on a 35 pounds per month tariff from either Vodafone or T-Mobile, tethered to either or for two years. If you’d rather not deal with that, you can always get the device for 549 pounds.

AT&T users will be sad to learn that their Nexus S won’t be 3G-enabled, according to tnkgirl who was retweeted by John Gruber of Daring Fireball. For now, we’ll just assume they mean this T-Mobile version will only work on AT&T’s 2G network. We’ll be digging for more information as the days move on.

And finally, Samsung’s come clean regarding the “Nexus S” and why they didn’t go with Google’s first naming suggestion, the “Nexus Two”. Their reasoning? “We don’t like being number two.” That’s very understandable, and judging by the reaction from our user community here at Phandroid, we can tell that many others don’t consider it a “number two” either.

If another wave of Nexus S news comes in between now and the next couple of hours, we’ll report it in similar style.

Android Market Update Rolling Out for Froyo – Adds Similar Related Tab

marketupdate_froyo

An update to the Android Market is making its way out to devices running Android 2.2. The update looks to be adding a 3rd tab to the app details screen called “Similar” or “Related” depending on the device you have. In the example above, the Droid X screen on the left shows a “Similar” tab, while the Evo 4G shows “Related”. Either way, they offer the same functionality from what we can tell.

No real announcement has been made for the roll out, but you should expect to see it soon on Android 2.2 devices. No doubt this is one of those incremental updates to move into Gingerbread with ease.

T-Mobile Quietly Responding to Froyo Delay

If you’re a Galaxy S user like me, one thing you love to do is show off your new phone. And let’s face it: the Galaxy S line is hot. Snappy and responsive, powerful, great GPUs — these phones have it all! Well, except, uh, Android 2.2. We’re still waiting on that. And waiting.

So, enter T-Mobile. They were one carrier that was speaking very loudly about the Froyo update, promising it would be available before December 1. Now, I don’t know HOW it’s December already, but here we are on day 2, still with no Froyo. Techradar has been reaching out to their contacts at T-Mobile, and getting back a few very quiet (and vague) responses.

“Unfortunately the 2.2 update will not be available via KIES today as expected and Samsung have confirmed that FOTA will not feature as part of this update, but should appear at a later date.

“Samsung are indicating the firmware will be made available at some point next week. We’ll keep you posted with further updates as we get them.”

So our wait continues. Mum’s the word from the other carriers, too, but it sounds likely that T-Mobile will see a via-computer update within the next week or so. Hopefully the rest of us won’t be too far behind.

Galaxy S Gets Ripped Off in a Big and Small Way; Promises Froyo Before the Real Phone

This image has no alt text

galaxy-kirf-2010-11-30-600

It’s been a while since we’ve seen an Android phone rip off the iPhone, an iPhone-look-alike running Android, a Win– you get the point. Today’s occurrence rips off the Samsung Galaxy S’s design, runs Android 2.1, and does it with a screen that’s a half an inch smaller and a chassis that looks twice as thick. The screen isn’t AMOLED, we’d assume, and it has a measly HVGA resolution. We’re also sure it won’t have that snappy fast 1GHz Samsung Hummingbird processor inside, but it does come with a respectable 512MB of RAM and ROM. They even include the logo, for good measure! The irony in all of this is that they promise an upgrade to Android 2.2 is forthcoming within a few weeks, but a lot of us (especially in the United States) are having trouble getting that from Samsung for the REAL Galaxy S line of phones. Hmph. [M8Cool via Engadget]
