Samsung Galaxy S 4G Price is $199.99 After Rebate [Official]

This image has no alt text

We’d already gotten prices from third-party providers WalMart and Wirefly, but T-Mobile has gone ahead and announced their official pricing for the Samsung Galaxy S 4G: you’ll be able to grab the thing up for $199.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate. I’d see if I could get a better deal at a third-party retailer if I were in the market for it, though. Look for this device to hit store shelves starting February 23rd. [via T-Mobile]

Samsung Galaxy S II Coming to T-Mobile [Update: Maybe Not?]

While we don’t have any pricing or an exact date on this release T-Mobile did state via Twitter that they would indeed inherit the new superpower amongst the Galaxy S line. Of course this really comes as no surprise with them also carrying the new Galaxy S 4G.

This phone however is no comparison to the Galaxy S 4g though aside from the internal storage, and the name they are completely different. The new Galaxy S II has a slew of goodies  not being offered thus far.

  • Android 2.3 Gingerbread
  • 4.27″ Super AMOLED Plus display with 800×480 resolution
  • 1.2GHz Dual-core processor with 1Gb RAM
  • 16Gb internal storage expandable via microSD
  • 2Mp Front facing, 8Mp rear facing camera with LED flash and 1080p Full HD video capture

With the vast amount of Galaxy S phones that don’t have official updates from Samsung yet, maybe this will make up for it. Granted it requires purchasing, but also offers so much more capabilities than what users currently have. I know a lot of people are waiting to get their hands on this phone, and it’s always our pleasure to heighten the anticipation a little more.

Update: Everyone gets excited and T-Mobile retracts statement and tweets this after. Apparently they thought they were being asked about the Galaxy S 4G. We’ll have to wait for more updates. Back to the drawing board.

Samsung Galaxy S 4G Review by Wirefly

The consensus on this device is confirmed again, “Yes, it’s essentially a Vibrant, but throw in Android 2.2.1 out of the box, 4G speeds, front-facing camera, longer battery life  … and it’s a really nice upgrade.” With that said this phone ships with the newest version of Froyo 2.2.1, which I’m sure is a relief to those Vibrant (and most other Galaxy S) owners that just got the “official” Froyo release. If you’d like to pick up a Galaxy S 4G it’s available for pre-order at our store or you can wait til February 23rd and grab it from T-Mobile.

In the video below you’ll see a direct comparison of the Vibrant vs the Galaxy S 4G, as well as some benchmark scores and general information.

The Samsung Vibrant has been a popular phone for T-Mobile. One of Samsung’s wildly successful Galaxy S series of cell phones, the Vibrant had a big and bright display in a sleek package, with some nice features added to the mix. Deciding to refresh the Vibrant, the new phone is called the Galaxy S 4G, and it has the same sleek package and top-notch display that distinguished the Vibrant.

In addition, the Galaxy S 4G brings more great features to the T-Mobile party, including 4G network speeds on T-Mobile’s 21 Mbpe HSPA+ system, a front-facing camera for video chat, and a bigger battery that just may be the biggest standard battery for any Android phone. Running Android 2.2, the Galaxy S 4G keeps the best of the Vibrant and moves into the new 4G world.

This video is a quick review of the Samsung Galaxy S 4G, including some benchmark testing and a peek at the phone’s camera quality. Click on the box to the right to see the entire video.

Will The HTC Flyer Measure Up To Other Tablets Like The Galaxy Tab And Apple iPad?

We can’t help but notice what appears to be an upwards battle with the entry of the HTC Flyer tablet.  Amidst the multiple 10-inch, dual-core Honeycomb running devices, HTC has opted to usher in the 7-inch, single core (although 1.5 GHz) device running Gingerbread instead.  What do you think?  Wise move on HTC’s part?  Check out the pics below for a comparison between all of the devices, courtesy of our friends over at Engadget.  Don’t forget to let us know what you think in the comments below.   Read More…

Samsung Galaxy Ace, Gio, Fit, and Mini Get The Hands-On Approach

Along with Samsung Mobile’s High end device, the Galaxy S2, they have brought their more budget friendly devices to spread the mobile love.  And thanks to our friends over at Engadget, they’ve gotten a great slew of hands on photos for you to stare and compare.  Check them out below in our gallery after the thread along with their respective specs.  Don’t forget to let us know what you think in the comments below.

Samsung Galaxy Mini – The Mini sports a 3.14-inch touchscreen, a 600 MHz CPU, 3 meg camera and QVGA display.  And though the device is small, it’s also a little on the thick side.  Hopefully, Sammy can keep this device priced on the low end of the scale and generate some much wanted revenue.

Samsung Galaxy Fit – Also touting a 600 MHz processor, the 3.3-inch device will come with a 5 megapixel camera and QVGA display.  The device is also a little on the thick side, so here’s to hoping it’s cheap as heck.

Samsung Galaxy Mini, Fit, Gio, Ace: Hands-On at MWC

This image has no alt text

Samsung unveiled four entry-level Android handsets last month – the Mini, Fit, Gio and Ace – and we got our grubby hands on them for the first time (as expected) at Mobile World Congress.

None of these devices will blow you away but they’re the type of offering I’d suggest to a first time smartphone user who doesn’t want to be bothered with the Android learning curve and a huge piece of hardware in their pocket. Want an introductory Android that does a lot more than your current phone and the ability to do so much more if you’re up for learning? The Mini, Fit, Gio, or Ace could be your next phone.

The Galaxy Mini reminded me a lot of the HTC Wildfire S announced yesterday. They’re both new iterations of successful phones but I thought they looked alike, too. Comparing them side by side I notice less of a difference, but both reminded me of smaller, dumbed down versions of the Nexus One

We’re always eager to see the next age of elite phones but don’t forget there is a massive number of non-smartphone users the manufacturers would love to convert. Maybe the Galaxy Mini, Fit, Gio and Ace will help accomplish that task.

T-Mobile USA will launch the Galaxy Mini in the Spring for $50 to $75 on a 2-year contract.

Samsung Galaxy S2, Galaxy Tab 10.1 Announced At MWC [VIDEOS]

This image has no alt text

At a pre-MWC event in Barcelona, Samsung made their Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Tab 10.1 Official, bringing the next evolution of their Android devices that rose to stardom in 2010. Samsung claimed they’ve sold 10 million Galaxy devices last year and the latest additions, while nothing groundbreaking, definitely bring some welcome updates that consumers will dig.

To make a long story short, we’ll give you the main skinny on each device and then dive into some explanation about the event itself, with nitty gritty details:

  • Galaxy S2 – 4.3-inch Super Amoled Plus screen, 1GHz Dual Core processor, 8MP rear camera, 2MP front camera, 1080p recording and playback, 1650 mAh battery, NFC equipped, Samsung Touchwiz 4.0 with 4 “hubs” (Readers Hub, Game Hub, Music Hub, Social Hub), 8.49mm thin, 116g, Flash 10.1.
  • Galaxy Tab 10.1- Android 3.0 Honeycomb running on a 10-inch screen, 8MP camera, 2MP front camera, 1080p recording and playback, 10.9mm thick, 522grams, dual core processor, Surround sound with speakers on left/right of device in landscape mode.

And now a little background. First we got to the event and waited in a line outside:

Once inside, there was a brilliant scene set with lots of colors, food, drinks, and people all waiting to get into the event. We grabbed a quick pic with the guys from Angry Birds while we waited:

By the time they let us in the crowd was immense. Shortly after I took this photo, all the seats were filled and a few hundred people resorted to standing room only in the back.

Kim Titus, VP of Public Relations at Samsung, introduced the event, down dropped the curtains, and we found out the background music was actually being performed by a live “mobile” orchestra composed of violinists and artists equipped with musically inclined Galaxy devices:

Samsung CEO, JK Shin, then announced the Galaxy S2 once and for all, discussing the company’s continued commitment to Screen, Speed, and Content:

Then things got a little… slow. Samsung proceeded to invite a plethora of partners on stage to discuss how they are working with Samsung, and it caused the event to be filled with about 40 minutes of boring nothingness. New rule: partners only get a shoutout, a handwave, and a couple sentences. The “partners” made what was an otherwise an awesome event unbareable at times. Samsung also packed in a bit too much cheesiness through well-intended real life “examples” of different types of people using their Galaxy S for the better.

Then they pretended to end the event, dropped the curtain, but in role call style they presented the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in grand fashion:

Then, again, a partner got on stage and ruined the flow of the announcement. Belkin talked for about 10 minutes about pretty much nothing, saying they were going to launch Galaxy specific accessories, only they took 200 times longer to explain this fact and filled it with partnership fluff.

First Impressions?

Again, nothing groundbreaking. The Galaxy S2 is definitely an upgrade, seeing dual cores, Gingerbread, bigger/better screen, better cameras and improvements across the board. There are no “wow” factor additions, but the Galaxy S was already solid and this phone should yet again be a favorite when it’s released globally. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 isn’t much different than the XOOM – it’s an Android 3.0 tablet. That being said, it’s awesome.

We’ve got some hands-on videos of the devices coming up soon, but until then, below you’ll find a bunch of official pictures of the Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Tab 10.1 followed by the press releases for each:

MWC 2011: Samsung officially announces the Galaxy Tab 10.1

More exciting news has been announced from the Samsung camp. Samsung has officially announced the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, a bigger and more powerful successor to the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

You’re probably wondering about that somewhat peculiar name for the device. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 gets its name from the 10.1″ screen, which is significantly bigger than the screen of the original Galaxy Tab.

Like the other upcoming Android tablets, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 will be running Honeycomb, Android’s highly anticipated tablet OS. The tablet will also boast a dual-core Tegra 2 chip as well as a  front-facing 2 megapixel camera and an 8 megapixel camera on the back. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 will have 16GB and 32GB versions.

No Galaxy Tab 10.1 for U.S.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1″ is coming to a country far from you – if you are stateside, that is.  Engadget reports this:

Samsung says the 10.1 will be launching in March in both Asia and Europe — Vodafone will be the first carrier to nab the Tab — but it had absolutely no timing details for the US market. Price? We’ve got no idea, though we’re told it will be “competitive.”

The Galaxy Tab 10.1″ is running Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) and is a “Google Experience” device.  This means that there will be “almost” nothing getting in the way of this being updated due to the fact that there is no Touchwiz interface to slow down progress.  Interesting exclusions are a microSD slot, USB and HDMI ports.  The Galaxy Tab 10.1″ weighs in at 1.32 lbs (the 10″ Xoom weighs 1.6lbs) so it is relatively light for it’s size.

As more details come to us, as well as some non-stock photographs we will follow up with more regarding the “Galaxy Tab II” or as it is now known the Galaxy Tab 10.1″

Engadget also posted this video of their hands on.  Thanks Engadget

Confirmed: Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Tab 2 Shown Off Tomorrow

This image has no alt text

I don’t think we needed THAT much confirmation, but here it goes anyway: Engadget’s saying that you can definitely expect to see the Samsung Galaxy S2 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 when Samsung unveils it at their Mobile World Congress event tomorrow.

The Galaxy Tab 2 will indeed be a 10 inch tablet and – even better – it runs Honeycomb. It’s also supposedly very similar to the Motorola XOOM, spec wise: a 1GHz processor and a hi-def screen resolution are said to be confirmed. It wasn’t said if the processor would be dual-core or not, but that new Exynos processor Samsung introduced might end up inside.

Also confirmed was the Samsung Galaxy 2, and its specs match up more closely to that pre-order page that popped up on MobileFun. It’ll have a 4.3 inch WVGA Super AMOLED display, an NFC chip, Bluetooth 3.0, and HSPA+ connectivity. This thing is as top of the line as a phone could get, it sounds like.

We’ll be roaming the show floor and attending Samsung’s event tomorrow, so be sure to stay tuned for coverage on these two devices as we’ll be hurting with anticipation trying to get our hands on it. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

Even More Rumored Samsung Galaxy S2 Specs on Eve of MWC 2011

We’re but a few days away from Mobile World Congress 2011 where we’ll finally be able to put some smart phone rumors to bed.  One handset which has seen its fair share of speculation is the Galaxy S2 from Samsung.  Heading into the annual event, we’re hearing what may be the last batch of specs, from two separate sources.  Hit the break to see what both PocketNow and MobileFun are tossing around.

PocketNow is pointing at few Expansys  details for not only the Galaxy S2, but additional Android smart phones.  As for the Samsung device, these are “nothing more than speculatively populated” specs, but they do match up well with previous whispers.  These guys are saying to look for a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, 512MB RAM, 16GB internal storage, 8-megapixel camera, and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera.  Rounding out the hardware would be support for NFC, HDMI out,  HSPA+, Bluetooth, and GPS. Looking at the processor, we’re somewhat surprised to see a Qualcomm’s 8260 1.2GHz processor with Adreno 205 3D instead of their own Orion chipset.

MobileFun lists mostly similar specifications for the Galaxy S2, but does have a few discrepancies. In this case, we have the dual-core 1.2GHz Samsung Orion processor running things with 1GM RAM. Aside from a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, everything else remains pretty consistent. Android 2.3, Bluetooth 3.0, NFC support, and an “ultra sharp 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen sound about right.

Look for all this to come to a head next week as Samsung unveils the real deal. We’ll be anxiously awaiting and look forward to sharing the news with you guys!

Samsung Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Tab 2 Press Info Leaked Early.

Based on the press release photo and specs, it appears as though Samsung has plans to bring the thunder with their upcoming smartphone and tablet release.  The Samsung Galaxy S2 should be making its appearance at MWC on the 14th, but we’ve managed to search the depths of the Internet and scrape up some pre-released info on the device for you.  The specs and photo were leaked from a Korean blog called Paran, which revealed some pretty hefty particulars.  The Galaxy S2 will sport a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus multi-touch screen, a 1 GHz dual-core processor (Exynos?) and Bluetooth 3.0.  The device will also support WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n and come packed with HSPA+ compatibility.  Sounds like a powerhouse of a device to me.  Here’s to hoping Samsung stays on the ball and the device sees some “timely” updates.  Why are you laughing?  Although, it shouldn’t be that much of a deal breaker for you since the device will be released with Gingerbread (2.3).   Read More…

Samsung Galaxy S2 Actually Getting Orion? Retailer’s Pre-Order Page Seems to Think So

This image has no alt text

The other day, we reported on some rumored specs coming out suggesting the Samsung Galaxy S2 would be getting Qualcomm’s dual-core Snapdragon processor instead of their own-developed dual-core Orion. This lined up with earlier reports saying Samsung’s Orion wasn’t quite ready for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, thus they’d employed NVIDIA for that sequel.

A new pre-order page for the device has gone up via MobileFun, though, saying otherwise: they think it’ll definitely be shipping with the Orion. They also put up a price: 550 pounds will grant you what should be Samsung’s 2011 flagship. Other rumored goods include 1GB of RAM, Android 2.3, an 8 megapixel camera, a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED display, Bluetooth 3.0, a ront-facing camera, and an NFC chip. [Thanks, Kirsty!]

Huge Spec Leak: Wildfire 2, Desire 2, Desire HD2, and Galaxy S2

This image has no alt text

Aside from the fact that all of these phones have the number “2″ in them, something amazing has happened – specs for the HTC Wildfire 2, HTC Desire 2, HTC Desire HD2, and the Samsung Galaxy S2 have all been leaked. Pocketnow is our benefactor today. Let’s dive in.

The Samsung Galaxy S2 will not have Samsung’s dual-core Orion chipset as we once hoped it would, but it does have Qualcomm’s 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon. Samsung likely went this route due to their chipset not being ready in time, but we thought they’d be going with NVIDIA earlier on.

It houses the same Adreno 205 GPU found in the Scorpion processor. As expected, it’ll have an 8 megapixel camera that can record HD video. It’ll have 16GB of internal storage and 512 MB of RAM to round out its performance specs. The display is said to be Super AMOLED and will be nearly 4.3 inches.

The Desire HD2 will have a qHD Super LCD display (the slide says it’ll be 3.3 inches, but I have a feeling that’s not quite accurate) and Qualcomm’s MSM8260 Snapdragon dual-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz with an Adreno 205 GPU. It, too, has an 8 megapixel camera with HD video recording – no surprise there – and will have 8GB of internal storage and 512 MB of RAM.

The Desire 2 is a bit less powerful with a 1GHz Qualcomm 8250 processor – this one isn’t dual-core and has the older Adreno 200 GPU. It also has a 3.7 inch qHD Super LCD display, an 8 megapixel camera with HD video recording, 8GB of internal storage, and 512 MB of RAM.

Finally, the Wildfire 2 is indeed real and will unsurprisingly be the slowest of the bunch with a 600MHz Qualcomm MSM7227 processor and an Adreno 200 GPU. It has a 3.2 inch TFT HVGA display, a 5 megapixel camera with no HD recording capabilities, only 384 MB of RAM, and little internal storage to work with.

Pocketnow has the full suite of slides if you want to know the rest.

Samsung Galaxy S 4G Coming to a Walmart Near You

Samsung’s Galaxy S 4G, the Vibrant’s long lost, big brother, is set to hit Walmart shelves later this month. At a price $148.88 with a new 2yr contract  it starts out cheaper and more feature packed than the Vibrant did. Sporting a front facing camera and 4G capabilities, it’s really just a mild upgrade, but should suffice for those wanting something to replace their Vibrant, or for those who wanted more than what Samsung was offering on T-Mobile. I suppose it could also be a nice choice for those who desire the richness of that Super AMOLED, however don’t wanna wait for the Galaxy S2. With MWC 2011 around the corner and all the rumors and leaks flying around I’m sure everyone just wants something new. Anybody looking at picking up this phone?

Samsung Galaxy S Quick Specs:

  • Android 2.2 Froyo
  • 4″ Super AMOLED touchscreen
  • 1Ghz A8 Processor
  • Front Facing VGA, Rear Facing 5MP camera with 720P Video recording and playback
  • 16GB internal flash memory expandable to 32GB via micro-SD

Samsung TV Remote App Released For Galaxy S And Tab Devices, Available For Download In The Market

Samsung announced that they have released their TV remote app for both the Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab devices.  The remote sports pretty much all of the functionality you would see on a standard remote, only with a sleek and sharp looking UI.  As of now, the application is not available for any other device, hence the reason it will not appear for you if you search for it in the market.  In addition, we are told that there will not be an apk around the interwebs for you to sniff out.  Who knows, maybe our boys over at XDA can take care of that. CyanogenMod 7 Brings Gingerbread to the Galaxy Tab

This image has no alt text

Though CyanogenMod 7 has been running around as nightly builds for various handsets for the past few weeks, today we can finally relax and take peace in knowing that a public beta is now also available for the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Regardless of if sales are “small” or “smooth” and oblivious to a return rate that may be below 2 percent or as high as 15 percent, the ROM for rooted tabs brings Android 2.3 Gingerbread to the 7-inch slate.

As it is a beta, you install at your own risk. It isn’t 100 percent functional. Of course, as stated previously, you will need root, but you will also need to own a tab that meets the following criteria: “GSM (Euro, US ATT/TMO tabs, with JJ4 or other unprotected bootloaders that can run Euro ROMs and P1_add_hidden partitioning.” More info at the source link below.

CyanogenMod 7 Public Beta Available for Galaxy Tab

Have CyanogenMod on your phone? Want it on your Galaxy Tab? Well XDA user Technomancer has a public beta currently available of his CyanogenMod 7 Gingerbread port for the Galaxy Tab. While still a work in progress, most basic functions are working. Having updated it 3 times since it’s first beta release, January 28,  it’s clear he’s working on making it a bit more stable.

This is a beta build of CyanogenMod 7 gingerbread
by Technomancer TCMAN-dmg on freenode.net and irc.droid-life.com

Bug reports: open issues at http://github.com/techomancer/android_device_samsung_galaxytab

This build is for beta testing, not for general consumption

CREDITS

See http://cmsgs.com for more info
The github for CMSGS Tab is http://github.com/cmsgs

It is based on great work of CM SGS team http://cmsgs.com

Thanks to codeworkx, coolya and noobnl and all beta testers.

INSTALLATION

Your Tab should be partitioned with P1_add_hidden
It should have unsigned bootloaders that can load Euro ROMs
Wipe your Tab (data, dbdata, cache)
Flash it with heimdall (use simple flashme script for full flash)
Or just flash zImage and factoryfs.ext4.

For Google apps download latest HDPI apps for Gingerbread http://goo-inside.me/gapps/ and install using recovery.

Status
Voice: OK
3G Data: connection established but default route not set
Wifi: works
BT: sometimes stuck on startup, doesnt fully pair
GPS: broken
Buttons backlight – linked to LCD backlight
Sensors:
– BMA020/BMA150 Accelerometer
– AK8973B: gravity OK, rest needs tuning
– BH1721FVC Lightsensor: OK
– L3G4200D gyro: uninmplemented
– Proximity: faked at 10cm
Camera: not tested

Issues and workarounds
* Stuck on CM boot ani after flash
Probably / data is not mounted.
run “adb shell mount”
it will show list of mounted partitions, if /data is not mounted to /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 as rfs, format the /data partiton.
To do that “adb reboot recovery”. “adb shell” when in recovery, “parted /dev/block/mmcblk0″, initialize/format partition 2 to fat32 using “mkfs 2 fat32″

* BT doesnt start
Try again
Try rebooting
If that doesnt help try “adb shell stop hciattach” Sometimes hciattach service gets stuck when starting.

Changelog:
2011-02-03 New kernel from Update1
Refreshed repo and rebuild with latest
added codeworkx’s brcm_patchram_plus fix that should hopefully fix bluetooth initialization

2011-01-31 GPS should work now
Used Nexus S GPS binaries
Switched to init compiled from sources
Switched to CWM 3.x (still very broken)

2011-01-29 Fixed 3G data

2011-01-28 First beta release

Dominik

While only recommended for more advanced users, this beta is open to everyone and any input is appreciated. For status updates and current issues check the thread.
