Unity 3D Engine – Taking the Pain Out of Cross Platform Game Development

This image has no alt text

Whilst we had been spending some time at the Samsung Mobile booth, Rob and I ran into &ldquothe Unity guy&rdquo who gave us a speedy demo on the power of Unity 3D engine. Joe Robbins showed us how easy it is to construct a cross platform game making use of the Unity engine and painlessly output that game into a working Android, iOS, Xbox or PS3 game.

The game demo (Angry Bots) was getting edited in true-time on a personal computer where those modifications had been then immediately playable on the game demo running on the Samsung Galaxy Tab. All it took was 1-click to then output the game onto other platforms. It was fairly cool to see everything in action and even though I know subsequent to absolutely nothing on game development, the Unity platform made it all seem so simple. It&rsquos no wonder some of Android and iOS&rsquos upcoming blockbusters like Shadowgun and Bladeslinger are all becoming built with the Unity engine.

Birdland Game Android App Review

The Birdland Game Android App by Birdland is a virtual pet bird game for the Android platform. The object of the game is to decorate your cages, take care of your birds, breed your birds and sell them. The game is a social game so you can check out your friend’s cages too.

The game is pretty easy to play, all of the controls are located on the bottom of the screen. Also located on the bottom of the screen is the shop where you can purchase new birds, food and items for your bird cages. Each item purchased gives you more experience points. In order to earn more money you will need to breed and sell your birds. You can also get more money by purchasing some with real money if you really need some.

Overall, this is a very well made virtual pet bird game with good quality graphics for the Android with social features which enables you to play with your friends. At the time of this review the Birdland Game Android App is free. Thumbs Up.

Cometkaze is Intergalactic Physics-based Game with a Love Twist

I’ve often wondered what it would be like to play Angry Birds in space, except the bird would be a comet and the game would mash together the fierce style of a Japanese fighter pilot with the speed of light and the physics of space. Much to my entertainment, Cometkaze has created such an app, [...]

Flying Penguin best free game Android App Review

The Flying Penguin best free game Android App by Top Free Games – Best Apps is an game in which you are a penguin who is trying to catch fish for food, while at the same time outrunning a polar bear before you become his food. The game is a level based, angry bird’s type game, where the faster you pass through the level and the more fish you catch the more points you earn. The on screen controls are touch and gravity based and very easy to learn. The graphics on the game are average; they do however offer an option for enhanced graphics depending on your phones graphics processor.

When you open the app you will see the main menu and you will only be able to select one level in the lite version as the paid version will offer additional levels. The game will start with the penguin on the top of the mountain and you will tap on the screen and hold down to keep the penguin sliding on the mountain. As the penguin nears a mountain top release your finger from the screen and watch the penguin fly across the screen. Make sure to time the jumps and control when the penguin lands to ensure you catch the most fish possible.

Overall, this is a great causal game for the Android platform. At the time of this review Flying Penguin best free game Android App has a free and paid version available for $ 0.99. Thumbs Up.

The Big Game

According to Nielsen, the Super Bowl on Fox was the most-watched TV show of all time, in the United States. Approximately 111 million viewers watched the game.

Fox charged between $2.8 million and $3 million for 30 seconds. Total Network Ad revenue for the game was estimated at $204 million.

It was only topped by the 400m viewers for the World Cup final, which had an accumulated worldwide viewership of 1.5 billion people.

Could the future for on-line media be just as big in, say, 10 years? Mass Media doesn’t do Behavioral Advertising, Cluster Marketing, social networking or transactional events.

How big is big?

Not very, according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. He says Android generated $5.90 per user in mobile advertising in 2010. He sees the total increasing to $9.85 in 2012 and adds that the Android Market app store also could boost monetization per user from in-app advertising over the next two years.

Munster notes that former CEO Eric Schmidt last summer said he thought Android could be a $10 billion business if there were 1 billion users each generating $10 a year – and the analyst contends the company is well on the way to hitting the $10 per user level.

Munster estimates Google had $850 million total mobile revenue in 2010, with Android generating about 16% of the total, or around $130 million, which would translate to $5.90 per Android user. (That implies about 22 million Android users for 2010.)

By 2012, he thinks there could be 133 million Android users generating $9.85 a year, which would mean $1.3 billion in Android-related revenue.

I have always assumed that there was some kind of utopian “free” network cloud in the future, supported via advertising. With an Average Revenue Per User of $10/year, that sounds like wishful thinking.

But by the end of 2014, Gartner forecasts over 185 billion applications will have been downloaded from mobile app stores, since the launch of the first one on the iPhone in July 2008.

Apple’s iPad has sold more than 14.8 million units worldwide since its introduction in April. ISuppli forecasts 57 million tablets will be sold this year and 171 million in 2014.

Tablets can show more expensive display advertising. Google predicts that cellphone screens would be the No. 1 screen for viewing the Web by 2015.

Shipments of smartphones, tablets and other app-enabled devices will overtake PCs shipments in the next 18 months, says market research firm IDC. Shipments of personal computers will still continue to increase even as they are surpassed by other devices.

Morgan Stanley analyst Mary Meeker previously predicted the shift to mobile (above). IDC predicts worldwide shipments of smartphones and media tablets will reach 377 million in 2011, and reach 462 million in 2012, exceeding PC shipments, says IDC.

If revenue from video and display advertising is added to revenue from ancillary services such as applications downloading and services, couldn’t that generate an average revenue of $15-$20 per person per month?

Mass media “wastes” ad dollars. Online media can target individuals – and demand CPMs that are 100 times higher than mass media.

Will broadband wireless move towards free? If it does, the media landscape could split into a “free” service, like radio and television, and a pay service, like cable. What do you think?

Mad Skills Motocross is One Serious Motocross Game

class="size-medium wp-image-25078" title="mad skills mx" src="http://www.appcraver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/madskillsmx-e1295333853696-300x200.jpg" alt="Mad Skills Motocross for iOS" width="300" height="200" />

There are tons of motocross games on the iPhone, and they all have the same basic controls. Steering is ignored entirely. What the player controls is the tilt of the bike, the acceleration, and the brake. This is enough to speed past opponents on level terrain, pop wheelies and perform flips, and try to gently land the bike after enormous jumps. It’s simple, but at its best it’s pretty engrossing. Mad Skills Motocross is maybe the best game in the genre.

The reason title="Mad Skills Motocross on the iTunes App Store" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mad-skills-motocross/id410229362?mt=8&partnerId=30&siteID=saW0nB/fQ6o" target="_blank">Mad Skills Motocross works is that it avoids all the old pitfalls of the competition. Mad Skills Motocross is less about hilarious spills and ragdoll physics– though there is still plenty of that to go around in this game. Instead, Mad Skills focuses on mastering the bike, the track, and the timing. It’s a smarter, trickier approach to the side-scrolling motocross racing game. This is a game that will amuse the casual gamer, certainly. But it is also a game that will keep competitive gamers working around the clock to beat their best times, or their friends’ best times.

Peter Rabbit: Buddy Edition Uses Game Center for Tech-Savvy Storytelling

The Buddy Reading System uses Game Center to connect two devices for audio communication. What this means for parents and their children is that you can read the storybook with your child even when you aren’t there.

Using Game Center for a storybook app,  title="peter rabbit : buddy edition ipad book" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/peter-rabbit-buddy-edition/id398566659?mt=8&partnerId=30&siteID=saW0nB/fQ6o" target="_blank">Peter Rabbit: Buddy Edition certainly opens up appealing possibilities for traveling parents. It requires initial setup, directions for which are plainly provided in the app. They may appear a bit complex initially, but tech-savvy parents can figure it out. After that, in order to read with your child, you set up the book by selecting the Buddy Reading option from the menu and following prompts. (Young children will require assistance from someone on their end.) Once the Game Center invite is sent and accepted, you can then read the story and control the page turning from your end while your child looks and listens on theirs.

Epic Games’ Jay Wilbur Talks Android Game Development

The good folks of The Slowdown are at the Dubai World Game Expo (grumble lucky sods grumble) and were able to snag an interview with Epic Games’ Jay Wilbur. In this review, he discusses the Unreal Engine, the Unreal Development Kit, developing games for the iOS, and well as a little bit about developing for Android. Here’s a clip wherein Mr. Wilbur is showing the interviewer a demo of Epic Citadel on his Galaxy S:

What are the challenges in developing for Android? The demo there seems to be running great.

It runs really well and really fast. One of the problems with the Android marketplace is hardware fragmentation, that’s a really big issue. The other thing is marketplace fragmentation, there are so many different appstores out there. The Android marketplace is a little more difficult [to develop for] because there is less control. I think the Android marketplace is robust … I find it very easy to buy things on it, it’s just that Apple has very tight control. So anything in the Apple world is perfect. It’s just perfect. We like that, we like that a lot. We know that it’s just gonna work. Sometimes that’s not always the case in the Android marketplace.

Can’t really dispute his comments, can we? As much as we love our Androids, fragmentation is and will continue to be an issue for a while. However, it didn’t stop the PC from becoming the dominant computing platform in the world. Just sayin’. ;)

You can read the whole interview by heading over to The Slowdown by clicking the link below.

Challenge Yourself with Mini Cannon, a Fun Physics-Based Puzzle Game

This means that the developer, title="Gendai Games' developer site" href="http://gamesalad.com/accelerator/minicannon" target="_blank">Gendai Games, created Mini Cannon using GameSalad Creator, a free program that allows for the programming of original games, using an innovative visual interface. As exciting as this is, Mini Cannon should gain notoriety simply for being a very good game. The old cliche applies: It’s easy to pick up, but hard to put down.

The object of title="download Mini Cannon" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mini-cannon/id408448204?mt=8&partnerId=30&siteID=saW0nB/fQ6o" target="_blank">Mini Cannon is to launch these little breath-mint-looking things into a box, using a cannon. If the projectile makes contact with each of the little cartoon stars during its flight path, then extra points are earned. As the levels progress there are more stars, fewer projectiles, and more platforms and other obstructions in the way of the box. Mini Cannon succeeds because it makes great use of a simple premise.

Cartridge Phone Concept Lets You Switch OSs Like a Video Game

This image has no alt text

Concept phones are a love/hate sort of thing: you love what they bring to the table, but you hate the fact that you might never see it materialize. The latest shows an HTC-made “Cartridge Phone” that would allow you to switch between several operating systems – including Android and Windows Phone 7 – by switching cartridges in and out. In a perfect world, we’d all want that phone. I’m not even sure if it’s technically possible, but licensing issues alone would get in the way. But if someone is able to make a reality out of this, let me know: I’ll be the first in line. [Yanko via Android Community]

BlackBerry Sedona enters the rumored device game

BlackBerry Sedona

If you were thinking there weren’t any more rumored devices in the ol’ pipeline think again. N4BB has posted up an image of what looks to be a new player to the name game – the BlackBerry Curve ‘Sedona’. It sports 512MB of RAM and OS 6.1. Not many other details to go along with this one, but now that this little guy is out in the open we’re sure to see more info in the near future. Check out a few more pictures after the break.

*UPDATE* - As noted in the comments, this just simply appears to be an Apollo prototype so nothing really new here as it’s not another new device but rather, a real version of what we saw in the previously leaked renders.Given the fact the Apollo name has been given to many devices at one time or another we’re starting to think it’s actually a stage in device development rather then a real codename given to any one specific device. Could be way off on that thought but it is what it is, a thought.

Angry Birds board game on sale this Spring

AngryBirds-board-game

Rovio knows how to capitalize on an opportunity and make a few bucks. Mattel, the hugely popular toy manufacturer, is going to be taking Rovio’s Angry Birds from the digital realm and making it a board game for us to enjoy when we forget our smartphones and tablets at home while away on a fishing trip.

The game will be as easy as the software is, in the way one person simply tries to knock down their opponents bricks, layers and pigs to gain points. First person to 1000 points wins. Pretty simple hey? It’s expected to launch this May in stores, and will only cost you approximately $14.99. Fun!

Rogue Developer Steals Iron Soldiers Beta Game, Publishes To Market

This image has no alt text

Take notice, good-willed developers. One popular method to perfect a beta app before going live to Android Market is to offer it as a direct download to a small group who can test it, submit bugs, suggest changes, and overall provide a tight-knit system for feedback. That’s exactly what cyberniko on XDA intended to accomplish with the beta launch of a game called Iron Soldiers. But he got more than he bargained for.

Another member of XDA allegedly downloaded the unsigned APK, signed it himself, and submitted to Android Market as if it were his own game. Essentially, he released the developers game as his own, before the game ever came out of beta. If it’s true… what a sham and what a shame.

The offending developer, DavinciDevelopers, unpublished the allegedly stolen game from Android Market, but their information is still cached on the Googlewebz. That developer has a number of titles for sale on Android Market, and I would suggest (if this is all true) that nobody purchase a title from them. Other forms of boycott may include buying, rating 1 star, uninstalling, a returning to Android Market with whatever reason you may choose.

The game is still in beta and you can download it here. Check out the REAL developer’s site at Vuxia.com. The game looks pretty neat and the 6-months of work really shows- Iron Soliders seems very polished. Perhaps an unfortunate incident will lead to more fertile pastures… I know I’m eager to check out more from Vuxia after seeing some screenies and hearing some concepts.

Learn from another developer’s mistakes if you’re working on your own app or game. Sure, launch a beta in a forum to help the dev process along, but make sure you protect your APK and cover your butt by whatever means necessary.

I just want to leave a little disclaimer that the accusation of stolen property haven’t been confirmed as true/false and I’m going by what the developer announced in their own thread on XDA as it seems to be a reputable report.

TegraZone Game Store Makes Finding Games for Tegra-Powered Android Phones Easy

To accompany the announcements of nVidia’s Tegra-powered phones, they have announced their own game store that will facilitate the purchase of games designed specifically to take advantage of the Tegra platform. They are currently courting Gameloft to distribute games through this store, called TegraZone, since they do not use the Android market either. By foregoing the market, nVidia will be able to distribute games that exceed Google’s 50MB limit, thus allowing for much more extensive games. As with many CES announcements, we do not have a concrete date for the introduction of this store, but nVidia plans to have 5-10 games available at launch.

LG Wants In On CES+Tablet Game

This image has no alt text

lg_logoThe Korea Times is reporting that LG wont allow Motorola to be the only Honeycomb tablet unveiled at CES; rather Lucky Goldstar will have their own 8.9″ beast on display in Las Vegas next week.

We knew that LG was interested in getting into the Tablet game as soon as Honeycomb was ready, but all of that has been overshadowed by Motorola’s more publicly known entry, the XOOM.

LG also plans to show off “auto-stereoscopic 3D mobile displays” at the event, making LG a late but more than welcome headliner to the CES game.

Given LG’s readying of the new standard of super phone, the LG Optimus 2X as well as their intentions to increase investment, 2011 may be the year of LG.

Try Rush Hour Jr. For Budding Board Game Enthusiasts

Rush Hour Jr.

Photo: ThinkFun, Inc.

Until your kids turn three, the most important lesson that board gamer parents can teach is how not to choke on dice. But once they’ve mastered that, it’s on to real games. Trouble is, there aren’t a lot of interesting games for kids that young. And, at least for mine, the thematic hooks of Candyland or Chutes and Ladders really didn’t take hold.

When he saw Rush Hour at our friendly local gaming store, though, he just about lost it. A game? About cars? All sorts of different colors? He had to have it. We noticed that the box indicated that it was for kids eight and up, though, and he’s four.

Normally I view toy age indications with a healthy dose of scrutiny, but a four year difference is a lot. So we told him that it might make a great Christmas gift, and left it at that. We didn’t say which Christmas.

Then, a few weeks later, we saw Rush Hour Jr. Same basic concept, said the store clerk, but simplified for younger kids, with a slightly more child-like theme (there’s an ice cream truck).

“He’s four,” I said. “It says for kids six and up. Think we’ll be good?”

The clerk shrugged. “Does he like puzzle games?”

“He plays a pretty mean Trainyard on my iPhone.”

“Yeah. He’ll be fine.”

And he was. The kid tore it open on Christmas and wanted to play right away.

The game works like this: you arrange a number of cars on a 6×6 grid. each car is one square wide, but range from two to three squares in length. There’s an ice cream truck on one row and it has to reach the other side of the grid to a small hole in the board, where it “escapes the traffic jam” and delivers its precious cargo without it melting.

The ice cream truck escapes the traffic jam!

Image: ThinkFun, Inc.

The game comes with forty cards with four levels of play. I assembled one of the beginner puzzles and slid the board across the table. My son looked down, resting his chin on his hand. It was the moment of truth.

“They can only drive forward and backward,” I reminded him. “No moving them sideways. That’s cheating.” Cheating is a big deal in our household.

He stuck out his tongue, moved a few of the cars, and then pushed the ice cream truck off the board. “We saved the ice cream!”

It’s been a couple of weeks and Rush Hour Jr. is still a big hit. He’s setting up his own puzzles, and every once in a while, he likes to just play with the cars, but he’s progressed all the way up to the Advanced level. It’s been a real treat to watch him struggle and then overcome all the different puzzles.

The game comes with 16 cars, including the ice cream truck, a board, forty challenge cards, and a nice bag to carry it all in. We picked ours up for $15 and it sells at Amazon for a little cheaper.

Free Gameloft Game – Hero of Sparta, Today Only

It’s no secret that Gameloft makes some of the best Android games you can get. Usually running $4-$6, Gameloft features a lot of HD games that both look great, and play well. You may remember that they gave away a copy of Dungeon Hunter HD earlier this month. Today’s offer is similarly great, only it’s more reminiscent of Spartacus than King Arthur. Today, and today only, you can get a free copy of Hero of Sparta from Gameloft. If you’ve played Dungeon Hunter, the gameplay will feel familiar — it’s a very similar style. If you haven’t played either, catch the trailer below, or just jump straight to the source link and start downloading! At a price of NOTHING, you can afford to take a risk. (Note: the game may change on you once you select your phone. If it does, just re-select the free game from the list of games toward the bottom of the screen, and begin your download.)

Tron: Legacy and Coke Zero Bring a Location-Based Game to Android

Coke Zero is on a mission to promote the new Disney movie Tron: Legacy, which was a highly anticipated remake of the original Tron from 1982. I personally have had a chance to check out the new one, but have seen the original like a million times. Coke took the popular concept of the lightcycle and took it global. The game is just like the movie. Except now you are on foot and running around your block trying to win the battle. Check out the video they made about it.

It definitely has potential. The developers request that you are at least 13 years old to play and to gain the best experience and all features, signing in with Facebook helps. Take a look below for the details and the download link.
