One More Way to School the iPhone: Skies of Glory Brings Live Cross-Platform Multiplayer Gaming to Android

This image has no alt text

What better way to take out all of your fan-boy hatred than by strapping into a World War II era plane and strafing some iPhone nerds into fiery oblivion. While doing this in real life is a) not advisable, b) completely illegal, and c) a caper the likes of which would take almost too much planning, doing so on your Android phone is simpler than ever.Social Gaming Network has ported their WWII dogfight title (note: not Michael Vick in a Hitler suit throwing money at pit bulls) to Android, and unlike most games that come out for various consoles, the live multiplayer element remains cross-platform.

You can tail your iPhone loving buddies while unloading fierce machine gun fire via WiFi, Bluetooth, and 3G data connections. We’re not saying Apple is like the Third Reich or anything, but we’re not asking you not to.

Androideroids Shows Off Adobe AIR-Based Multiplayer Gaming for Android

This image has no alt text

After showing off his Nexus One slot car gas pedal, Grant Skinner is at it again with another Adobe AIR application for Android. This time he has put his own spin on the classic Asteroids, bringing a multiplayer version of the game to the Android OS that he has dubbed Androideroids. The concept is the same as the original, navigate your spaceship through a field of deadly asteroids while blasting them to pieces, but the game is taken a step further with the addition of 8-person multiplayer.

Androideroids is an Adobe AIR application that runs on a desktop computer with controls coming from your Android handset. The handset UI gives you a first person view of the action playing out on the screen. Throw in a few friends and you’ll be blasting your way through space debris while avoiding enemy fire aimed at taking you down. It is a great example of a multiplayer experience for smartphones done right.

Just like his slot car program, Skinner’s Androideroids showcases just how cool Adobe AIR combined with Android can get. While the game isn’t available for the general public, hopefully we’ll be seeing more innovative approaches to gaming and device interfacing coming to market very soon.

Android Applications – Redefining the Mobile Gaming World One App at a Time

Well, the future is here and nothing supports that fact more than the Google Android mobile phone.  With the evolution of the cell phone, we see handheld devices becoming nothing more than tiny computers with the ability to do anything from take pictures to playing games on the Internet.  Game development has become a huge factor in the life of an Android phone.

The Android software development kit (SDK) makes it easy for game developers to enhance the gaming features on an Android phone.  Since this is such an easy program to work with we see game applications blossom at an unbelievable rate.

With the support of Google and the help of Android SDK, you can personalize your mobile device however you see fit.  This innovative software comes to us from the fine people at Google and Open Handset also leaving the Android as an open source program.  One of the main reasons the Android platform is so capable of developing innovative applications is due to the Java support that exists with the Android.

The evolving world of Android applications is redefining the uses and necessities of the gaming industry for mobile devices.  Android developers are opening the door with never before seen ideas using the latest technologies and mobile game development software.  Aside from gaming applications serving an entertainment purpose they are also starting to be used in conjunction with movie promotions, multiplayer online games, and even business motives such as advertising.

Now that Google has released API documents showing samples and examples of game development, many Android supporters are using this information to its maximum potential.  In addition to the gaming aspect of the Android you will also see this device support media formats like pictures, songs, videos, etc fueling the mobile entertainment industry.

With the plethora of technologies and platforms that are being used in correlation with mobile gaming, or application development, we see developers using tools like Windows Mobile, Symbian OS, Sun’s Java ME, Palm OS, Google Android platforms, etc.  We have come a long way from solitaire on a desktop so these developers need to be on the top of their game with graphics, game play, and sound effects.  This is not a difficult chore with the recent development of Android applications.  We are starting to see the Android shape the future for what handheld devices will be capable of doing, and if you are a tech-nut then hang on to your seat because the next fifteen years are going to be a wild ride.

Gaming Cave-Time with Tritton 180’s

Tritton 180 (image: trittontechnologies.com)I was recently reminiscing about days before having kids with my wife – it seemed such a quiet and peaceful world, but what did we do with all that time. Many things have changed since the arrival of our brood, and of course we wouldn’t go back for all the tea in china.

For me the biggest change has been how I play video games – as I often muse on my blog. At first my hobby took a back seat as I struggled to justify such frivolous time when there were so many other baby and child related chores to do. But soon I realized that video gaming was my cave time, which fuelled me up for another day of family chaos.

Recently, I was testing out some Tritton Gaming Headsets for Games Basement, the AX 180 model in particular, and realized this was a perfect way to get some gaming in while on baby duty in the small hours.

I set up the baby monitor beside the TV on mute, so I can see from the readout if I’m needed by any of our sleeping angels upstairs. Then, adorning the AX180’s I can happily game the night away.
I was particularly impressed with the build quality of the 180’s. Not only did they feel really solid, but could easily be adjusted to my head – it seems I have an unusual shaped cranium that many gaming headset simply don’t accommodate.

What I hadn’t expected before playing like this was just how much atmosphere it would add to my gaming experience. It’s not just the quality of the sound, but the fact that it surrounds your head. This is fast becoming the only way I want to play games – whatever time of day it is.

Lenovo’s Watt Whiffing Gaming Powerhouse Is a Switch-Hitter

Product: Ideapad Y460

Manufacturer: Lenovo

Wired Rating: 8

Buy a laptop today and you have to make (at least) one big decision that is an exercise in trade-offs: Get a machine with cheap, integrated graphics and better battery life, or buy one with a high-performance graphics card that sucks down more power and runs hot?

Can’t decide? Get the Lenovo Ideapad Y460. It’s both.

Perhaps we should explain. An innocuous switch on the front of the Y460 lets you control how much graphical power this otherwise unassuming notebook pumps out. Flip it on, and you’ll have full access to the ATI Radeon HD 5650 graphics chip. In graphics-on mode, gaming rocks, with performance on par with recent games-focused machines we’ve reviewed, but battery life fizzles to barely an hour and a half.

Not fragging this afternoon? Switch yourself into integrated mode. Gaming suffers immeasurably (framerates are on par with your average $500 system), but battery life shoots through the roof, jumping from 90 minutes to nearly four hours, perfect for long plane rides when an A/C outlet is miles below you.

Best of all: Graphics are switchable in real time without a reboot, so you can jump from spreadsheet to Sims 3 and back in seconds.

The only problem with the Ideapad Y460 is that you can’t switch the price. At a thousand smackers, it’s expensive, considering it bears the Ideapad brand instead of the more upscale Thinkpad logo. Clearly designed with consumers in mind, it offers an attractive, yet a little out-there, industrial design. It has desirable features like a multitouch trackpad, super-loud JBL speakers, and a mega-bright 14-inch LCD (at 1366 x 768 pixels). Other top-notch features are a 2.4-GHz Intel Core i5 M520 CPU, 4 GB of RAM and 500 GB of hard drive space.

The only question is whether you will want to pay nearly a grand for all of this. It’s not quite in MacBook territory, but it’s awfully close.

Maybe you can justify it. The Y460′s performance is so dazzling and the machine is put-together so well that I think you can make the case that it’s worth the cash upgrade. Just tell the wife you’ll eat ramen for a month. She won’t understand, but you’ll be so happy with your computer you probably won’t care.

WIRED Unbelievably dazzling performance. Switchable graphics give you the best of both worlds — gaming performance and battery life — at the flick of a switch.

TIRED Not all features are perfectly polished: SlideNav application switcher bar is functionally useless. Noisy optical drive. Surprisingly heavy (5 pounds) for its size.

Belly Bums: Casual Gaming that’s Comical but not Compelling

belly bums iPhoneBelly Bums - When you think of beach volleyball, typically the image that comes to mind is athletic, toned players diving for the ball in the sand. Prepare for that image to be demolished with Belly Bums. Instead, the game’s characters look like The Biggest Loser contestants—week 1 and without shirts.

The game certainly has some comic value considering that you launch the ball over the net with the player’s oversized stomach. But while some of the game’s nuances are a bit comical, the gameplay is quite thin.

The controls take some getting used to—tapping the screen catapults the ball with your belly. By swiping on a volleyball icon in the corner you can control the spin. With a little practice most players should be able to get a handle on it and master some of the decent spin and targeting moves that you can perform with the volleyball. (…)
