HTC Flyer Price is 670 Euros, Says Amazon Germany

We’ve finally got ourselves some preliminary pricing information for the HTC Flyer tablet introduced yesterday at Mobile World Congress. Amazon Germany has revealed a 670 Euro price point – that’s just over USD $900.

Many were hoping to see it a bit cheaper than several of the Honeycomb tablets coming out as they see this as HTC’s Galaxy Tab. The reality is that we’re still not sure if the price is justified or not because we haven’t seen enough of the tablet.

Amazon didn’t include a date to go along with their little reveal, but HTC told us this thing should be out within a month’s time. It’ll be interesting to see how carriers will price this if they allow subscribers to subsidize the cost. Let’s hope any subsidy puts it right around the Galaxy S’s average price point ($400-$500) when it debuted. [via TabletGuys, Thanks Denny!]

Motorola Defy Lands in Germany for 350 Euros

This image has no alt text

More European launches to speak of today. This time, Motorola’s Defy – which we took a nice look at this past week at CTIA’s Fall 2010 show – will be headed for Germany. The device can be had as low as 1 euro on contract, but you can also grab it up outright for 350 euros. If you don’t know what the Motorola Defy is all about, Motorola’s calling the phone “Life Proof.” There are a couple of things to note about this moniker. First of all, it’s definitely life proof. Spill water on it, drop it into a pit of sand, or just drop it off of a bridge: this thing can take it all.

defy-pic

It’s worthy to note the other meaning of “Life Proof,” however, as this isn’t just a device meant for the construction professional. This is meant for folks from all walks of life who need a phone that can take a nice beating. From the dirt-road bikers who have to put their phones into zip-locked bags to the ditsy teen who forgets to take their phone out of their pocket before washing their clothes, Motorola wants you to know that you can get a very durable phone that is also very smart.

The phone comes with Android 2.1 and MOTOBLUR, an 800MHz processor, 2GB of onboard storage, a 3.7-inch WVGA touchscreen, a 5-megapixel camera, and more.

Germany Rolls Out Nationwide RFID Cards

Germany will become the first country to outfit its national ID cards with RFID chips, embedded biometric photos, and optional digital fingerprints, reports RFID Journal. Germany will begin issuing the RFID-based national identity cards on Nov. 1, 2010.

The RFID-based card, approximately the size of a credit card, will replace the nation’s current national ID card, which is slightly larger than a credit card and lacks an RFID chip. It will be mandatory for all citizens receiving an ID card for the first time, or who are replacing older ID cards. Those who do not need to renew or replace their ID cards will continue to be able to use their non-RFID version until their cards expire—typically, within 10 years.

In 2008, the German government passed a law paving the way for the new ID cards. One motivation for issuing the cards was to help reduce the misuse of personal data over the Internet. Many Germans are still reluctant to make online purchases, due to worries that their personal data or financial information could be misused.

By installing an RFID card reader on their home computer, citizens can use the card to positively identify themselves online, via a USB connection. This enables vendors and online organizations to know for certain whom they are dealing with. If a business wants to offer residents of a particular city a discount on a product or service, for instance, that company can verify an individual’s address on his or her ID card.

Before carrying out a transaction online, an ID cardholder must place his or her card on the RFID reader and input a PIN in order to authorize the transmission of specific data stored on that card. At the same time, only those organizations that have obtained a certificate from the government will be able to collect the information from the electronic ID cards, such as a person’s name, address and birth date.

Each ID card will contain a SmartMX passive 13.56 MHz RFID chip manufactured by NXP Semiconductors. NXP reports that its SmartMX chip platform incorporates a number of unique security features to guard against reverse-engineering and attack scenarios with light and lasers, as well as a dedicated hardware firewall to protect specific sections on the chip.

According to NXP, the version of the SmartMX chip being used was designed specifically for Germany’s ID card, and is 100 percent compatible with the ISO 14443-A RFID standard.

Some citizens have rallied against the cards, claiming that anyone with an RFID reader could collect the data stored on them at any given time—but the government has been able to quell such fears, by pointing out that only certified organizations can request such information, and by citing proprietary security controls. If a person loses his card, he can call a government hotline and have the card blocked from network use. Officials will then list the card as blocked on a central server accessible to licensed participants.

Germany hopes to set technological and data-security standards with the new ID cards, says RFID Journal.

Some 90 countries will have electronic passports by the end of 2010 and 104 by 2014. The United Kingdom started an electronic passport scheme in 2006, only to be hacked shortly thereafter with biometric data extracted from the chip at a distance. The initial cost to British taxpayers was over C$670 million. The British passport was hailed as the most secure in the world.

Cyber Security Awareness Month, an annual event since October 2001, was organized by the National Cyber Security Alliance, the Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) and more than two dozen government agencies and companies including Microsoft, Google, PayPal, RSA, Facebook, Visa, and Wal-Mart. The goal is to get security precautions to become second nature.

Samsung Galaxy Tab Priced For O2 Germany

The Samsung Galaxy Tab is coming soon as we’re now in the beginning of October and we now have some pricing for the highly anticipated Android 2.2 tablet for O2 in Germany. As you can see in the image above, the Galaxy Tab will go for €99, but you’ll have to take part in the carriers My Handy Payment Plan little scheme they have going similar to T-Mobile’s Even More + which requires you to throw down €27.50 a month for a duration of the 24 month contract which totals about €759 ($1,047). Worth it?

While the details are pretty vague, it looks like the above plan doesn’t include voice-call features either, so you have to fork over the extra dough for that SIM card as well. They did suggest that the Galaxy Tab will be available sometime this month. We’ll give you another recap of the specs to help you decide if you really want this tablet

  • Android 2.2
  • 7″ WSVGA enhanced TFT display
  • 1GHz Cortex A8 Hummingbird processor
  • TouchWiz UI
  • Front-facing camera
  • Wi-Fi
  • GPS
  • Bluetooth
  • Micro SD expandable up to 32GB

Any takers?

Germany Gets LTE

In May the German government raised EUR4.38 billion in spectrum auctions (final results).

The country’s four operators – Vodafone, T-Mobile, Telefonica O2 and KPN’s E-Plus – all bought spectrum.

Now they’re beginning to roll out LTE service.

The German spectrum auction ran a total of 224 bidding rounds over 27 days in April, 2010. According to German regulator Bundesnetzagentur, the total sum raised from the sale of the 41 frequency blocks was almost €4.4 billion ($5.4 billion). The blocks were sold in four frequency bands: 800MHz (paired); 1.8GHz (paired); 2.0GHz (paired and unpaired); and 2.6GHz (paired and unpaired).

The German auction, like other auctions around the world, split the 2.6GHz (4G) band into two segments; a 140 chunk for paired frequencies and a 50 MHz chunk for unpaired frequencies. Whether the unpaired swath will be used with WiMAX or TD-LTE remains to be seen. T-Mobile was not enthusiastic about unpaired 2.6GHz – they only bought 5 MHz. Other carriers bought 10 or 20 MHz chunks.

In other LTE news, TeliaSonera, which launched the first commercial LTE network in the world, has begun offering LTE services in Gothenburg, Sweden’s second largest city. By the end of 2010, TeliaSonera plans to cover 25 cities around Sweden. By the end of 2011, their 4G network should be available at over 200 locations.

Germany Gets Samsung Galaxy 3

Samsung has announced that they will be releasing the I5800 Galaxy 3 in Germany.  It’s good to see that with so much of their attention on the Galaxy S here in the states and in the UK, they’re not forgetting to provide other areas with mid-range choices as well as the high-end devices.  The Galaxy 3 will ship at the end of this month with Android 2.1 and a 3.2-inch HVGA screen, with the standard Google features, and will support a 32GB microSD card and a 3.2 megapixel camera. .  No mention of processor speed or memory, but at 299€ (about $386 in USD), it seems to be aimed at the midrange market.

Glad to see Samsung continuing to branch out, and it’s always good to see carriers continue to commit to the Android platform.  The more Android phones on the market, the more we all win.

Motorola’s got a boatload of love for Germany, lately. Yesterday, we saw their quirky Motorola Flipout announced for German carriers O2 and Vodafone for 349 Euros, and it looks like the Milestone XT720 will be getting the same treatment. Pricing hasn’t been confirmed, but 540 euros off-contract looks to be a popular figure.

Auctions Winding Down in Germany & India

The big German spectrum auction heads into week five, reports Light Reading, and the bidding has just passed the €3 billion (US$3.9 billion) mark after 161 rounds.

Total bids so far on Monday morning came to €3.09 billion ($4.02 billion), and the bidding is still going on among the four participating German operators — E-Plus Mobilfunk GmbH , Deutsche Telekom AG, Telefónica O2 Germany GmbH, and Vodafone Germany.

The 800MHz frequency band has attracted the highest amount of bids at about €2.6 billion ($3.4 billion). There are about 71 3G slots available for auction in India, bidding on 22 telecoms zones in India, with 9 companies taking part in the 3G sale. The latest auction results are posted here.

Meanwhile, the Indian 3G spectrum auction will be completed in “one or two” days, telecoms minister Andimuthu Raja told parliament on Thursday.

Aggressive 3G bids could spell trouble for mobile operators. The world’s fastest-growing mobile market has 12 providers, four times the number operating in China. Fourteen million new subscriptions were added in India last month alone, but new entrants have scrambled to win customers by cutting tariffs that were already among the lowest in the world. The Government has said that it expects proceeds from the auction to exceed its original $US 8 billion target, helping it to plug its fiscal deficit, which was at a 16-year high last year.

Auction for the broadband wireless spectrum (at 2.3 GHz) will start after two days of the close of 3G auction, which started on April 9.

The Indian government expects revenue from both the 3G and wireless broadband services to total some 500 billion rupees ($11.2 billion). The government, in its federal budget in February, said it expected revenue about half that.

The total number of mobile users in India is currently 584.32 million, second only to China’s 777m.

Motorola Milestone Android 2.1 Update Delayed In UK and Germany

Although the latest Android 2.1 updates have already begun to roll-out to Milestone users in France and Italy, it seems that users in the UK and Germany will have to wait a little longer.

Motorola Milestone

In an update on their official Facebook page, Motorola Europe revealed that they have encountered some issues when testing the 2.1 update on the UK (T-Mobile) and Germany (Vodafone) networks.

For UK Milestone owners and those on Vodafone Germany, we apologise for the delay in the upcoming 2.1 upgrade. Issues occurred in testing on the networks and this has held up the process. We are now in final testing for the UK and assuming no further issues arise, this will be released next week. For Vodafone in Germany, we are looking to release later this week. As soon as dates are confirmed, we will let you know.

Just yesterday Motorola Europe announced that the Android 2.1 roll-out was underway, with users in France and Italy able to update their handsets after either receiving the OTA update prompt or by going to the menu in Settings -> About Phone -> Select System Updates.

Germany 4G Auctions Begin, Europe to Follow

Germany’s first auction of new mobile spectrum for a decade kicked-off today with all four of the country’s main operators expected to bid on spectrum (pdf). According to a Dow Jones Newswires report, the auction is the first of its kind in Europe and is likely to set a benchmark for similar auctions throughout the continent.

The Netherlands, Denmark, Austria, Sweden and France are expected to hold auctions this year, with the U.K. expected to auction frequencies next year, says Business Week. Spain, Italy and Portugal have yet to say when their auctions will take place.

“Many European countries will follow our auction closely,” said Matthias Kurth, president of Bundesnetzagentur, the German telecoms regulator. Analysts expect the auction to generate between 3 billion and 7 billion euros, a far cry from the 50 billion raised in 2000.

Spectrum is being auctioned on four different bands: 800MHz, 1.8GHz, 2GHz and 2.6GHz and includes the ‘digital dividend’ spectrum freed up from the switch from analogue to digital TV.

T-Mobile, Vodafone, KPN (E-Plus) and Telefonica’s O2 will bid on the frequencies. E-Plus and O2 – the two smaller players – took legal action against the regulator last year, arguing that the auction rules favour T-Mobile and Vodafone as they already own significant spectrum below 1GHz. While this action was rejected by the courts, Dow Jones Newswires notes that further legal steps are possible.

The 800 MHz frequencies come with specific terms attached. The winners commit to building a network to cover at least 90 percent of the population in rural towns and districts, starting with areas with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants, before they can use these frequencies in more densely populated areas.

Meanwhile, nine telecoms firms are bidding for three pan India licences that cover 22 regions. Bids for 3G spectrum licenses in India’s biggest markets are approaching $1 billion apiece just three days into the two-week auction.

“The auction has started and it is going smoothly,” said a telecom ministry official.

Leading Indian operators such as Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Essar are among the applicants bidding for the spectrum, along with Tata DoCoMo. The government owned operators MTNL and BSNL, which already offer 3G services, will also pay the same price as the three winners of the auction for the pan-Indian licences.

Analysts say that the bidding for the 20-year 3G licenses will be aggressive and could push the total raised closer to $11bn. The total number of mobile phones sold in India has jumped nearly 300% over the past few years, from 35 million in 2005 to 130 million in 2009, says the Indian Cellular Association.

India’s broadband wireless spectrum auction could kick off in about two weeks, once the 3G sale ends, notes Caroline Gabriel. The WiMAX community is battling hard to keep all three of the 2.3GHz licenses in the face of a possible TD-LTE deployment, should a Qualcomm-led group win a license. If Qualcomm does win a license, the other two Indian operators will almost certainly both use WiMAX (state-owned BSNL is already deploying).
