Angry Birds Gets Updated Today, Adds 30 New Levels And Wants Access To Your SMS?

Today, Rovio Mobile Limited announced that they have released a new additions to Angry Birds, and no, it’s not the anticipated Angry Birds Seasons Valentine edition.  It’s a completely different update, adding 30 new levels in a whole new western themed world called “Ham ‘Em High”.  There are a few new bonus items and they’ve even added a graphics toggle for lower end devices, eliminating the needs for Angry Birds lite.  The only other thing worth noting in this edition is in the permissions.  Looks like Rovio wants access to your SMS capabilities.  Now, what on earth can that be for?  Take a peak for yourself and note the other additions.  Only time will tell what Rovio has up their sleeves.  Rovio is definitely keeping busy these days as they are also working on the release of their Angry Birds Rio edition.  Hit the break for the permissions list and to check out some more screen shots.  Don’t forget to head on over to our apps database if you’re an Angry Birds newbie. Pulse Reader Gets Updated for Honeycomb

The hugely popular Pulse RSS Reader that is on both Android and iOS devices had the honor of being showcased during the Honeycomb press conference yesterday.  The presentation showed an updated UI that takes full advantage of all the new developer toys that are being included in the latest build of our favorite mobile OS.

Check out the full press release after the break.  If you have not downloaded Pulse, I highly recommend it!Full Press Release

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA – FEB 2, 2010 – Alphonso Labs, creators of the
hugely popular Pulse News app, showcased its brand new Android Tablet app
at the Honeycomb launch event at Google Headquarters. Alphonso Labs has
worked closely with Google over the last few weeks to customize their Pulse
News application and take full advantage of the Honeycomb platform.
Pulse, currently available on iPad, iPhone and Android phones, will expand its
cross-platform reach by launching the Android tablet app later this month. There
are a lot of new and exciting features in Honeycomb. Here’s a developer’s
perspective on how Pulse is leveraging the Honeycomb platform to enhance the
news reading experience on Android Tablets.

Activity Fragments
Honeycomb allows developers to break the Activities of their applications into
sub-components called Fragments, and then combine them in a variety of ways
to create a richer, more interactive experience. For the landscape view, Pulse
allows you to open the story right there in a new fragment. This allows readers
to simultaneously browse and read news stories.

Home Screen Widgets
Honeycomb lets developers take home screen widgets to the next level, offering
more types of content and new modes of interaction with users. Pulse has
incorporated some of these new widgets in its Android tablet app. What you see
below is a 3D stack of articles from a particular source, which you can flick up or
down to change stories. You can also click on a story you like, and go right into
the app. Interactive widgets will change the way you interact with the Android
ecosystem.

New Animation Framework & Hardware Accelerated Graphics
Honeycomb gives a performance boost to many graphics operations for
applications running in the Android framework. Pulse runs blazingly fast on
Honeycomb – the fluidity of the interactions is especially noticeable.
Richer Notifications
Honeycomb extends notifications by letting developers include richer content in
them. Pulse can now show you news stories, including image and headlines in
these notifications, keeping you up to date.

The Pulse News App is available on the App Store and Android Market. Users
can download the app at www.pulsene.ws or www.alphonsolabs.com

Samsung Fascinate gets Froyo the XDA developers way

It’s Unofficial – the Samsung Fascinate is finally running Froyo, albeit from the bright minds over at XDA-Developers.  User “punk.kaos” managed to compile together the latest leaked Froyo ROM (DL30) for the Fascinate and has it available for download.  It’s pre-rooted, and has all the normal Verizon/Samsung bloatware included so you can get the full experience of removing it as soon as the system loads!

Keep in mind that installing your own ROM can brick your phone if done improperly, so tinker at your own risk – especially since this dev is offering absolutely no support (or even requests for that matter) – so mod with caution!  Head on over to the xda-developers forum to grab it and let us know how it works out for you in the comments!

Android Theme Gets Added To Gmail

If you’re a big theme guy like me and you love Android, you’re definitely going to appreciate this one.  Although these have been out for a while, we thought it would be worth noting for those of you who might have missed it.  Gmail has added several new themes to the mix, one being an Android theme.  I’ve gotta say, not too shabby.  Over the years I have come to appreciate themes because they can give an old UI a new and freshly updated look, just ask any old Windows Mobile user.  It’s also the reason why I love the Android platform.  If your one year old Nexus One is feeling a little outdated, there is always a ROM or a theme within arm’s reach to freshen up the device.  Now, how cool would this be if we could change the theme in Android’s native Gmail app?

So, if you want to switch out your old theme, make sure you’re running the latest version of Gmail and head on into “Settings”—> “Themes”—> and pick the “Android” theme.  Let us know what you think in the comments below.

[Thanks, Mike S.]

EVO Shift 4G Gets Permanent Root!

The guys over at XDA-Developers (who else?) have finally gained permanent root access to the HTC EVO Shift 4G. This is a great advancement for the Shift. It’s kinda become an initiation rite for new Android devices. You haven’t made it as a device until someone’s rooted and overclocked you to twice your factory speed. Anyway, the process doesn’t look too hard, but it’s definitely not a one-click root type of thing. You need ADB and a good knowledge of how to use it. If you don’t know what ADB even is, this process is probably not for you.

As always, you root at your own risk, and rooting voids your warranty. You were warned. With that being said, you can head on over to the XDA thread if you’re feeling brave enough to try it out on your EVO Shift. We’re hearing that a custom recovery image is also on the way.

Big thanks to the guys over at DroidDog for the tip.

Nook Color Gets A Taste Of Sweet Honeycomb

We’ve said this time and time again, is there anything the folks over at XDA can’t do?  The latest and greatest news to burst from the XDA community seems, comes from a developer who goes by the name “deeper-blue“.  Roughly two days after Google releases their Honeycomb SDK, blue and company manage to port it over to the ever popular, Nook Color.  On the initial port, blue has stated that touch input does not work, nor is there hardware acceleration.  He then added, later, that the touch input was working and he would continue working on the acceleration issues over the weekend.   Read More…

Hell Freezes Over, Vibrant Gets Froyo Update

Whether or not you believe that all the community outrage at the lack of a Froyo update for the Samsung/T-Mo Vibrant did any good, the update is finally here.

As of right now, if you own a T-Mo Vibrant, you can download the 2.2 Froyo update for your phone using the Kies Mini software that Sammy uses to push builds to devices.  If you have questions you can visit the T-Mo discussion thread by clicking here.

We originally thought that this would be an OTA upgrade, but I am glad to see it as a download so people can get it when they are ready (NOW).

When we first told you guys about Rocket Bunnies for Android, the comments piled up claiming the game was indeed a blast, some even comparing its addiction to compareable to Angry Birds. Clearwire Gets New Board Chairman

Clearwire today announced that John W. Stanton has been elected as Chairman of the Board. Stanton replaces Craig O. McCaw, who resigned as Clearwire’s Chairman of the Board of Directors on December 31, 2010.

Stanton has served as a director of Clearwire since November 2008. He has served as Managing Director of Trilogy Partners, a private investment firm, as well as an operator of international wireless systems.

Seattle Times writer Sharon Pian Chan has a profile on John Stanton (right).

Stanton worked for McCaw, filing the first government applications on behalf of Craig McCaw’s cellular-telephone venture. He closed the sale of Bellevue-based VoiceStream to T-Mobile. A wireless-industry veteran, Stanton has worked all over the world and experienced the devastation of hurricanes and other crises at home and in developing countries. Nothing compares to Haiti, he said. Trilogy had a huge task trying to bring back its phone infrastructure and dealing with logistical difficulties, reports the Seattle Times.

He was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Western Wireless Corporation from 1992 until shortly after its acquisition by ALLTEL Corporation in 2005. From 1994 to 2004, Stanton served as Chairman of VoiceStream Wireless Corporation, which became T-Mobile USA, and he served as Chief Executive Officer of VoiceStream from 1998 to 2003.

Earlier this month the Clearwire Board of Directors appointed Ben Wolff as a director of the company following Craig O. McCaw’s board resignation. Wolff previously served as Co-Chairman of Clearwire from March 2009 to February 2010, and as Chief Executive Officer of Clearwire and its predecessor entity from May 2006 to March 2009. He is the Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President of ICO Global Communications and is the President of Eagle River Holdings.

Clearwire may be cash poor, but it is spectrum rich, owning some 120 MHz of 2.6GHz spectrum in major cities throughout the United States.T-Mobile paid $4.2 billion for 20 Mhz of nationwide AWS spectrum (1700/2100 MHz) in 2006.

Clearwire is conducting LTE tests this winter and throughout early 2011 in Phoenix, Arizona (see DW: Clearwire to Test LTE ). During the trials, Clearwire will collaborate with Beceem, and other partners, to determine the best methods for enabling end-user devices to take advantage of a potential multi-mode WiMAX/LTE network.

Clearwire is testing FDD configurations using 40 MHz of spectrum, paired in 2 x 20 MHz contiguous channels (“LTE 2X”), and TDD configurations using 20 MHz of spectrum. Clearwire says initial tests achieved peak download speeds on commercially available equipment in excess of 90 Mbps with upload speeds of more than 30 Mbps.

Craig McCaw’s satellite venture ICO, in the 2 GHz band, launched ICO G1 in April 2008, the largest commercial satellite ever launched at the time. But ICO’s business plan of providing multimedia to vehicles never panned out, and now the company is in the process of emerging from bankruptcy as DBSD Satellite Services.

DoggCatcher Gets Updated To Version 1.1.1823, Adds New Functionality And Gets UI Tweak

Although we just recently mentioned one of our favorite Pod Casting apps, DoggCatcher, we thought it would be worth noting again in a separate post, as the developer has just given it an update.  Now at version 1.1.1823, the update provides a cleaner, streamlined UI.  In addition, he added a theme option which allows you to toggle between dark and light backgrounds.  Furthermore, when playing a particular pod cast, you can now see the title directly above the player no matter where you navigate within the app, so you’ll always know which feed is currently playing.  And while most are complaining about the small fonts, I think the minor UI refresh compliments the app very well. TweetCaster 2.6 brings Zip-it feature – gets rid of unwanted tweets from follows

tweetcaster-26

Sometimes it’s very difficult to get the news or information you want out of Twitter, especially when you’re following hundreds of people or groups. Really, that much information just makes you want to skim, missing alot of content that you may, or may not find interesting. So how do you get rid of the “junk” you know you don’t care about without having to “unfollow” someone or groups?

TweetCaster has thought of that as well. The new feature of TweetCaster (version 2.6) now allows you to mute user, trend (#hashtag) or keyword. This can drastically reduce the amount of “junk” you may get in your feeds and timelines, thus making it easier to digest all that information coming to you from your follows.

Here’s a list of other features currently in TweetCaster for Android;

  • Zip It – zip annoying tweeters or trends from your timeline without unfollowing
  • Instapaper support – Save long stories to Instapaper to read later
  • Color code tweets – Choose a custom color for your tweets and @replies
  • Simultaneously post to Twitter and Facebook
  • Multiple Twitter account support
  • Multiple widgets
  • Retweet with or without comment
  • Twitlonger service
  • Conversation thread view
  • Twitter lists
  • Customized Twitter notifications

There is a Free version and a “pro” version for $3.99. the only difference is that the paid version has no ads. Take that for what you find it worth. Regardless, the “Zip-it” feature now in 2.6 is worth a try on your Android device. Scan the QR below, or click here for more information from our Apps database.

Urbanspoon gets an update – Now compatible with BlackBerry 6

Urbanspoon for BlackBerry

Urbanspoon is a great website for people that enjoy eating out. You can check out restaurant reviews from food critics, bloggers, and everyday people. In 2009 Urbanspoon released a free app for BlackBerry to help people like me, who can never seem to decide where to eat. It’s a simple concept. First you enter the area you want to search for restaurants or let Urbanspoon use your GPS location. Once it finds that area, it presents you a slot machine type interface with 3 tumblers. The first is for the neighborhood or area, the second is the type of cuisine, and the third is cost. You can choose for any of these categories to be locked, for example if you ONLY want Japanese restaurants to show, you would highlight that option and then click the little lock below. After that you can click or shake your device (depending on what BlackBerry you have, of course) and the tumblers spin. The application randomly chooses an area, cuisine and price range for you look at. If you click on the name of the chosen restaurant you can get details such as contact info, maps, and you can even open up the mobile version of the website which will take you directly to the reviews and information for that restaurant.

It’s a fun app that can help you make some very important decisions like what to have for lunch Tuesday or where to take that blind date your friend hooked you up with. Best of all, it’s FREE and there is a version for all devices running OS 4.2.1 or higher, and was recently updated to include devices on BB6. Urbanspoon is supported in Canada and the US as well as Australia and the UK. Pick it up today at the link below!

Samsung Gets Smallish with the Galaxy Mini – Debuting at MWC 2011

This image has no alt text

Samsung seems to have a lot up their sleeves for Mobile World Congress coming up this February. Superphones and dual-core behemoths aside, they’ve got a little bit for every sect of the smartphone market. The Samsung Galaxy Mini – otherwise known as the S5570 – runs Android 2.2.1, has a 320×240 resolution display (size not yet known), TouchWiz, Bluetooth 3.0, WiFi N, a camera (resolution and features unknown, but no flash), and has a microSD card slot. Not too bad, if the price is right. [via Samsung Hub]

Sony Ericsson Playstation Phone Still a Myth, Gets a Teardown Anyway

This image has no alt text

When speaking to Sony reps at CES about the new Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc, I took it as a responsibility to at least ask about the Playstation Phone, knowing exactly the answer I would get. According to the person I asked, the Playstation Phone is still a myth. Myth or not, the phone that we are now getting a pre-release teardown of looks very, very real. What should eventually be known as the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play (or as one commenter astutely pointed out, the poorly thought out abbreviation S.E.X. Play) features the Qualcomm MSM7x30 chip and Broadcom radios, not at all surprising.

We fully expect SE to continue to deny this handset up until it is inevitably launched at Mobile World Congress 2011 in February.
