HTC Hero Finally Gets Android 2.1… If You’re in Asia

Hero owners rejoice! Android 2.1 is coming to a handset near you! Oh wait, you didn’t read the fine print. This is currently for Asian customers only. Sorry, but don’t worry, it will be available worldwide soon enough.

As you know the Hero was stuck on Android 1.5, so this was a much needed upgrade. It’s good to see that the OEMs and manufacturers in the Android community are working to fix that little fragmentation problem.

Robot 13: A Hero Is Built

Robot 13 issue 3 cover

I wanted to put in one more mention of Robot 13 in case you haven’t seen it already. I’d gotten a chance to preview the first issue before it was released back in August, and got a look at the iPhone version via Robot Comics. There are three issues available at this point, and each one has had at least one massive battle as well as a smidgen of history. Thomas Hall and Daniel Bradford are doing a slow reveal, telling Robot 13’s origin through half-remembered dreams and sort of a Greek chorus.

They pull from mythology for their beasts, too—so far Robot 13 has faced a Kraken, a phoenix and a Cyclops. I’m sure there will be plenty of others. The artwork is captivating; Bradford makes great use of shadows and silhouettes. His artwork has a very angular, blocky quality to it, very stylized but somehow not flat. Again, though, I’m reminded of Hellboy, particularly with the big red man on the cover of this issue. (Even the bumps on the Cyclops’ head call to mind Hellboy’s sawed-off horns.)

But the story is certainly different. If you liked your mythology mixed with a heavy dose of action, Robot 13 just might be the amnesiac cyborg hero you’ve been looking for. Having seen the two versions, I definitely prefer the print version, because the tiny screen of the iPhone just doesn’t do justice to the big splash panels (and pinup galleries at the end). Of course, I imagine it will be available for the iPad soon, at which point I might have to change my mind again. Parents should be forewarned, though: most of the baddies have lots of teeth, and while the violence is fairly stylized and somewhat cartoonish, there’s still a bit of bone-shattering and limb-rending, so you’ll want to steer little kids away.

You can order the print edition directly from Blacklist Studios (look for the store link at the bottom) for $3.99. Issue #1 is already sold out, but #2 and #3 are still available. You can also get the digital versions from Robot Comics and Panelfly, depending on your platform.

Disclosure: Blacklist Studios provided review copies of the first three issues.

HTC Hero Android 2.1 Update from Sprint Leaks

Hey now, look what just escaped into the wild. A leak of that Android 2.1 update HTC Hero owners have been waiting and waiting for Sprint to release. No, this isn’t the official release, but yes this will wipe your root (come on, we know if you have the guts to update with a leaked ROM you probably already had your phone rooted anyway). The update is Sprint only, so if you have the Hero on another carrier and thought you were getting lucky too, think again.

Again, while this is the real deal of a leak, there is no way of knowing if this is the actual final version that will eventually be pushed to phones. If you just can’t wait any longer, well you can get it here. Update at your own risk.

HTC Says “Sorry” to Hero Owners for 2.1 Delays

If any Android handset is the most snubbed when it comes to receiving OS updates, it would have the be the HTC Hero. The Hero was released a year ago and still runs Android 1.5, even after promises of 1.6, 2.0, and now 2.1 have been delayed and then delayed again. HTC isn’t throwing bananas at their customers like AT&T, and is instead issuing an apology for the long wait.

hero-ota

Tech Radar has the following quote from HTC:

The integration of Eclair on the HTC Hero took longer to develop than anticipated and we apologise for this delay.

We are committed to meeting our customers’ demand for this update.

Do you think they’ll get it out before 2.2 hits? I’m sure the mere suggestion might get Hero owners a bit nervous, but HTC wants to be sincere in their effort, so let’s give them the benefit of the doubt and cross our fingers that the update will be coming to a Hero near you sometime soon.

HTC Hero, Samsung Moment 2.1 Update Now Coming Early May

This image has no alt text

Oh boy. Yesterday Quentyn posted a story stating the HTC Hero update to 2.1 would be available at the end of April for European Hero owners. Now an internal posting by Sprint acknowledging “customers are eager for Android 2.1″ says that the “much anticipated” update will be available in early May for HTC Hero and Samsung Moment owners in the US.

Maybe this time it’s for real! Having waited through delay after delay waiting for the 2.1 update for the Motorola Droid, I understand the position Hero and Moment users are in, and I’m pulling for you. At least Sprint is preparing their employees to field customer concerns and questions about 2.1, so it sounds like if you get to pestering the people at your local Sprint retailer you may be able to get some answers.

HTC Hero getting the 2.1 update, confirmed

Remember the popular rumor that the HTC Hero 2.1 update is due in April but it was not confirm. Well, the guys over at ThisAndroidLife sent an email to HTC asking about the 2.1 Update for HTC Hero and a HTC representative sent him the following reply:

“Some of the phones in our Android line up including your Hero are due to receive an upgrade, and it is scheduled to be released starting at the end of April. Your phone should be upgraded Over-The-Air. You can expect a pop-up message on your phone when connected to the internet once it is ready. When the upgrade is ready, we will notify you via our website and on various social media networks including Twitter and Face book”

So all you guys who are so angry on their HTC Hero, I think it’s time to get ready for the 2.1 Update.

This is not fake and it’s originally from HTC. Half month is passed, so lets see what happens. The rest of the Sense UI powered devices will get the 2.1 Update later.

So guys are you happy now?

Android 2.1 RUU Image leaked for the HTC Hero CDMA (Sprint)

Damageless over at XDA has release an RUU file of the latest and possibly final build of the Android 2.1 update for the HTC Hero Sprint Android phone.

RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2.20.651.1_signed_test | Android 2.1

Here is a link to the latest RUU from Sprint.

You cannot simply extract it. This still has root since it is a test release. I recommend just doing an adb pull of your system directory after you flash it. Don’t do this when the final one comes out or else you might be stuck without root.

You will need to add busybox, patch sh and su, and make sure that you do another recovery image and such. I also recommend adding Superuser.apk and stuff. If you use the Desire build.prop, you can get most of the protected apps working.

Enjoy.

http://dl.damagedroms.com/2.0/RUU_He…igned_test.exe

Leak, I know who you are.

This should make all you CDMA Hero user very excited.  I’m sure one of the developers will quickly turn this into a ROM that you can all flash to your phones.

If you see any ROMs released from the this leak, please let us know.

RUMOR: Sprint HTC Hero Getting Android 2.1 On April 9th

This image has no alt text

File it as a rumor and tread carefully as you direct your eyes at an alleged screen shot of an internal Sprint document suggesting there will be a “maintenance release tentatively scheduled for April 9th”. It doesn’t say 2.1 directly, but the anonymous tipster suggested that the problem with picture thumbnails solved by the update weren’t the core purpose, and that 2.1 will be pushed.

hero-april-9th

We wouldn’t be surprised considering just last week a similar rumor pointed at the broader range of “April”. It’s just a picture of a text document and could be easily faked, but I think there are a boatload of Sprint-toting, Hero-rocking, Android-loving readers who want ANY possible morsel of information as to win their Sense-packing robot phone will get the call to the big leagues.

[Thanks Anonymous Tipster!]

The Sprint Hero and Moment to get Android 2.1 on March 26?

sprint android

So after some documents arose yesterday about the upcoming release of Android 2.1 for the Sprint HTC Hero and Samsung Moment, it appears as though some have gone ahead and used some internal Sprint connections to dig up a little more dirt. Several people have heard from Sprint that the release of this update is supposed to be March 26, which is slightly contrary to the April time frame previously given. Maybe Sprint is just trying to surprise everyone and release it a few days early, or maybe they just want to ensure it is rolled out before the release of the Sprint Nexus One or any of their other Android devices. Sprint users, cross your fingers, at this rate you will probably see the Android 2.1 update before the Droid does on Verizon. [via Engadget]
