Icon Pack – Metrogloss by Taine0

Taine0 has put together a very nice clean set of icons for our enjoyment. He calls it Metrogloss. They look pretty great to me. There are a couple of other things that he has done that is slightly different from other developers icon packs.

There are now icons for SMS unreadcount widget, that fit with the rest of the set and large tile icons which are 250×250 (used for the image above) just put them on your SD card under: \data\com.kanokgems.smswidget and then select the icon using SMS unread count when creating the widget

That might seem like a little more work then mosthttp://androidspin.com/tag/custom-icons/. You are correct, but those instructions are so you can use his unreadcount widget application that he has also included in the download. Take a look at what that does:

Very slick. The unread count widgets are easily placed on your screen just like any other widget. the final addition to this icon set that makes it stand out is how he has set up the distribution of them. You can download the file in the standard ZIP file or pull them one by one through his dropbox. I personally like the drop box link idea. If you continue through the thread on xda-developers, you will find links to other icons that he made by request. Taine0 is doing a pretty good job so far in my book.

Follow the LINK to the thread and pick these up and be sure to thank all these guys for all their work.

Icon Pack – Scrammble by Nixxez

You guys are no stranger to the customized icons and other various modifications I try to bring to you everyday. This one really caught my eye and though you might enjoy it to. Currently the developer has over 30 high end icons available in his icon pack. He is taking requests and will try to fulfill all of them. As with many developers out there, Nixxez, has a normal life and family to tend to as well. I have no doubt that he won’t do his best to get updates pushed out fairly regularly.

Good job nixxez, I know I appreciate your work, I hope you guys do to. If you would like to pick this pack up head on over to his xda-developers page and pick up the zip file and enjoy.

7 Battery Icon modifications for your Samsung Epic 4G

I located these battery mods in the Epic 4G section of xda-developers. The creator, theimpaler747, states that 7 of these mods will work with all ROM’s currently available for the Epic 4G. There is an 8th mod that is made specifically for the Quantum v2.5.0 ROM only.

Here are a few samples:

There are others to choose from of course. These were my 2 personal favorite choices. The blue Android MOD is available for all ROM’s and for the Quantum v2.5.0 ROM specifically. There is also an application available in the market, that makes changing battery MODs even easier for you Epic 4G owners. The application is only $1.00 and the QR can be found below.

If the application isn’t your cup of tea, feel free to head over to theimpaler747‘s xda-developers thread to pick up the download zips for flashing through clockwork recovery. As a precaution always make a back up of your current ROM before flashing any of these to your device.

RealCal gives your calendar icon that OS 6 feel

RealCal

When I upgraded to the Torch, one of the first things I noticed was that the native Calendar icon displayed a date that was automatically updated. True, you can also see the date without the icon, but it’s just one of those add-ons that you have to assume somebody asked for. To whoever had that brainchild, I salute you. There are a few OS 6 type themes out there that try to capture the look and feel of OS 6, but there was one thing that they missed – that auto-updating Calendar icon. BlingBerry themes noticed that too and they decided to do something about it. For those who want to add a bit of functionality to your calendar, they present RealCal.

They’ve really nailed the appearance of the actual OS 6 calendar icon; they say they’ve actually sourced the graphics directly from OS6 BlackBerrys. Not leaving OS 5 fans behind, they also added the same functionality to an icon that fits it with the default Precision Zen theme. The icons blend in perfectly. So while you wait until OS 6 arrives, you can get a jump on the OS 6 calendar icon offering.

Features

  • Easy to set up. Just install and it automatically turns your original calendar icon into an updating one. No additional setup is required.
  • Reliable and light weight. We keep the file size low and the memory usage to a minimum. We’re talking true native application performance. RIM couldn’t have done it better themselves if they tried.
  • Real OS5 and OS6 graphics. Everything is sourced directly from your device and looks completely authentic.
  • The last missing piece for your favorite OS6 theme. Get that blank or static calendar icon updating to bring your device to life!

RealCal is currently supports OS 5.0 and is compatible with the Curve 8900, 8500, 9300, the Tour, Storm, Storm 2, Bold 9700, 9650. RealCal is currently on sale for $1.49 in the CrackBerry App Store.

New AOL mail icon showing on BIS for BlackBerry users

AOL BlackBerry BIS icon

Just like the Hotmail icon that started showing up for BIS users about a month ago, it appears as if AOL mail is now showing a new icon of its own. Adrian let us know that this AOL icon is now showing on the device replacing the standard globe icon. So far just Hotmail and AOL are showing off, while a few users have reported seeing this for Yahoo! as well. We’re pretty sure this is an after-effect of the updated BIS rollout but haven’t been able to verify it. No love on the Gmail front however, but if things keep up we may see that change in the near future as well. Thanks Adrian!

Icon Motors Re-engineers the King of the Trail

Product: CJ3B

Manufacturer: Icon Motors

Wired Rating: 8

Back when records were state of the art, the pre-Jeep Willys CJ3B was king of the jungle trail. Unfortunately, its skills haven’t held up as well as its looks. Loving its style but not its capabilities, Icon Motors produced an aesthetically faithful update.

OK, update may be understating it. Severely.

Icon acquired a few old CJs and laser-scanned all of their surfaces, generating a 3-D model of the 70-year-old vehicle. Then, they pressed new body panels out of modern steel (the old Willys was made of wartime metals that aren’t as tough as modern stuff) and coated it all in a Teflon-polyurethane powdercoat that we couldn’t scratch despite hurling the truck at trees instead of around them.

While the outside looks just like an old Willys, a 1940s mechanic would never recognize the undercarriage. The new, mandrel-bent frame is designed to accommodate a fully independent suspension, instead of the old leaf springs. The Chevy-sourced 4-cylinder engine makes 205 horsepower, but gets 23 mpg.

The 4WD system is adapted from a 2010 model-year Jeep: It’s more advanced, and, as an added bonus, owners won’t have to scour eBay for antique replacement parts when they get overambitious in the off-road park.

And while a 1950s 3B tops out at around 50 mph on the highway, we throttled the Icon down L.A. freeways upwards of 80. Then, when we hit the Miller Jeep Trail, we switched into 4WD low and went way beyond our comfort zone without seeing the Icon balk. With 24 inches of wheel travel, it can scurry over boulders, romp rutted trails, and negotiate inclines that would make a Hummer run screaming for a pedicure.

WIRED Every light is LED—from the dashboard to the headlamps. At just 64 inches wide, it’s narrow and capable enough to tackle trails that Jeeps aren’t technically allowed on. Just try to scratch the paint: We drove through a big-ass thorn bush and wiped away the evidence with a rag. Attracts more thumbs-ups than the Colosseum. Only 83 grand.

TIRED Only 83 grand?! Just like the old CJs, high-beam switch is next to the clutch. (They moved that for a reason.) Shifter feels sloppy, er, retro. Seat belts were a little janky, prone to locking up even in the rare moments when we had the Icon sitting level.
