Facebook has pushed out an update to v1.5.1, which brings these changes to the app:
Added deals – get access to savings, free offers and special deals from nearby businesses
Added chat – now you can chat with your Facebook friends right from your Android device
Push notifications (only supported for devices on Android 2.2+)
Various bug fixes
These seem like the standard fixes but one thing jumps out at us: Deals? What are those?
From the looks of it, Deals is a new Facebook feature that allows the user to check in to places and possibly receive digital coupons and deals from businesses and restaurants. Sounds very Foursquare-esque to me.
Although I’m not too sure how to access Deals at this point, it sounds like a very promising feature for Facebook for Android.
Let us know what you think of the new Facebook features in the comments!
Remember the T-Mobile myTouch ROM leak we reported earlier this morning? Well, it looks like system information wasn’t the only thing this ROM was hiding as the 312MB file was also holding on to a commercial for the upcoming myTouch (HTC Glacier). As the video found below is meant for viewing on the device, it is currently sideways but you can still what UI this device will have along with some highlighted features. Enjoy!
As a follow up to my Nokia E73 Mode review I wanted to go into a bit more detail about the included games and applications. You may want to go into each one and try out the demo before attempting to remove the app or making a purchase of the full version. Some apps can be removed while others keep you locked out of doing so. They all have some kind of subscription or single fee to purchase and there are a couple that I am thinking about buying for my own E73 Mode.
Applications
TeleNav makes an excellent GPS navigation solution and a version is loaded on the E73 Mode. It is similar to the AT&T Navigator software included on the E71x. I find it to be useful, but am personally satisfied with the latest Ovi Maps and Google Maps clients so will not be subscribing at this time. You can use TeleNav for one day for $2.99 or subscribe for $9.99 per month.
Where is another application included on the E73 Mode that allows you to search for different places in a pretty slick interface. Where is also a subscription service that is available for $2.99 per month. It too can be removed from the E73 Mode using the standard Remove option in the application shortcut view.
Games
Six games are included on the Nokia E73 Mode and all can be purchased either as a one time fee or monthly subscription. I took a look at each in my video above and here is the cost breakdown for them.
Who Wants to be a Millionaire 2010: $2.99/month or $6.99 one time fee
Guitar Hero Mobile 5: $3.99/month or $9.99 one time fee
Block Breaker $2.99/month or $6.99 one time fee
The Sims 3: $2.99/month or $6.99 one time fee
Collapse Chaos: $2.99/month or $6.99 one time fee
Pac-Man & Ms. Pac-Man: $2.99/month or $6.99 one time fee
I may purchase Collapse Chaos and Pac-Man for myself since I found the games enjoyable and $6.99 each doesn’t seem too bad.
Do any of these applications or games appeal to you?
As more and more apps come online for Android, Google have made it even easier to find them. Since the beginning of the month, Google search results in the US now include Android apps.
When you search for an app, it will now appear at the top of the search results and by selecting these links, you will be brought directly to them in the Android Market. Some other useful details returned by the search, include the price and rating for that app.
While this is currently only available in the US, Google is looking to expand this in the future by adding other countries and platforms.
As June 4th edges closer, it seems that HTC and Sprint could potentially have a huge problem with one of the most hyped up device of 2010. The HTC Evo could have a serious defect in the included storage department.
Evo user, MG Siegler, has been using this device ever since Google handed them out to attendees at this years Google I/O. The rumored defect is that the 8gb microSD card that ships with this device, randomly stops working and would then appear corrupt or empty. While a simple reboot would fix this issue temporarily, the problem would happen again. Siegler stated that it all started occurring on day 2 of using this device and has almost everyday since he has been heavily testing , and using the phone as a camera, camcorder, browser, and other features.
Below are some apps that are failing unpredictably:
The camera app starts complaining that it can’t save pictures due to bad permissions, specifically: “Unable to save file to SD card due to insufficient file permissions”.
TuneWiki, a music app, goes crazy and almost freezes the phone while trying to play the playlist that is loaded into its memory but failing at accessing the card.
The gallery app sees no pictures.
The ASTRO app shows a mix of empty and unavailable dirs in a state I’d never seen before.
While it is unclear the root cause of this issue, it appears that users are split with some saying that it is a software issue others saying it is a faulty microSD card. I doubt that there’s a bad batch of microSD cards in everyone of these devices handed out so if it is a software issue let’s hope a simple OTA update can fix this problem as this could be a huge hiccup for one of the most anticipated launches in Sprint’s history.
If you were lucky enough to attend Google I/O 2010 and have not had this happen to you, beware as you may lose your data, like in this case, unless the bug is fixed. Without further ado, I am posting this to bring Google’s, Sprint’s, and HTC’s attention to the matter as well as gather some feedback from those of you who were also affected.
