HTC Released Gingerbread source Code for Flyer, Desire Z, and Incredible S

HTC continues to lay the foundation for opening up Android. In addition to promising the unlocking of boot loaders for future phones (EVO 3D and Sensation owners are eagerly waiting for this) they have now released further source code for the Flyer (7-inch tablet) Extraordinary S and desire Z.

Whilst the source code for these models has been hacked for fairly some time and the flashing community has numerous options of custom ROMs to select from for these devices, it does show HTC’s commitment to offering a really open sourced product. Whilst this release won’t be shaking the foundation of its rivals developers for Android will wake up to the smell of new source code, and for a developer there’s absolutely nothing like waking up to the smell of freshly released source code.

Droid Incredible 2 Users Receiving Gingerbread Update Now

This image has no alt text

That’s right. We reported on Friday that Droid Incredible 2 users would be getting their taste of Gingerbread sometime this week and according to our Phantips, some lucky users are able to pull their OTA update.

To check if Gingerbread is ready for your Incredible 2, simply jump into your phone’s Settings and go to System Updates then Check New. You should then be prompted to download 116MB Gingerbread update and install. As always, make sure your battery has a full charge before attempted the update and if you want to be really safe, backup your apps and sync before updating.

Let us know in the comments if you’ve received the update!

Thanks, Jon!

HTC Incredible S – Photos and Video

You may notice it’s a little more curvy than the Droid Incredible, that’s not all that got changed though. The Incredible S got tweaked a bit from it’s original state. Now featuring a 4″ Super LCD screen, front facing camera, it’s now GSM capable, and has more RAM available. It did lose it’s 8GB flash memory but I’m sure it’ll work out, it has a microSD slot after all.

HTC Incredible S Quick Specs:

  • 4″ Super LCD display
  • 1GHz Snapdragon processor with 768Mb of RAM
  • 1.1GB internal storage
  • 1.3Mp front facing camera, 8MP rear facing camera with LED flash, and video capture
  • HSPA/WCDMA: 900/AWS/2100 MHz
  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz

HTC Incredible S
The alluring HTC Incredible S smartphone combines cutting-edge design with a premium mobile experience for those who dare to be different. Showing what can be achieved when engineers and designers work together to raise the bar for mobile phone design, the HTC Incredible S smartphone features a stunning, contoured body that highlights the internal hardware components of the device. Capturing and viewing video in crystal clear High-Definition has never been so easy and a bright 4-inch WVGA Super LCD display and stereo surround sound bring a vibrant cinematic experience to the palm of your hand.

HTC Incredible S also takes high quality pictures with its 8-megapixel camera with dual flash, and it easily enables videos, photos and music to be shared from the handset direct to a TV using DLNA® technology. Thanks to the HTC Incredible S’s front facing camera and video call functionality, users will constantly be able to chat with their friends face-to-face.

Availability
The HTC Desire S, HTC Wildfire S and HTC Incredible S smartphones, will be broadly available to customers across major European and Asian markets during Q2 2011.

HTC Droid Incredible 2: White With Chrome Rim, Contoured Back, Global 3G [RUMOR]

This image has no alt text

It seems we’ve hit the Verizon Wireless rumor motherload with info one of the hottest sequels you could imagine. Listen up folks, this stuff is hot off the presses from one of our trusted sources.

HTC Droid Incredible 2 with Global 3G

The first HTC Incredible has been one of the most successful Android Phones to date. It’s incredibly versatile and can be considered top of the line with nearly every target market – I found myself recommending it to men, women, teens and everyone in between. Now I’ll be recommending the HTC Incredible 2 (codenamed Vevo) to world travelers as the Incredible 2 comes with Global 3G Connectivity. This could be thanks to a new Qualcomm chip that supports both HSPA and CDMA.

But that’s not all… apparently the Droid Incredible 2 will be white with a white chrome rim and contoured back. Tell me that won’t make for a bad ass sequel to the original DINC!

We’ll keep you posted as we get more details and hopefully pictures to boot. These are still rumors as of now… but we have very good reason to believe their absolutely true and we’re eager to bring you evidence. Stay tuned!

We’re getting word from the guys over at Engadget that Big Red has dropped some prices. The  Droid Incredible and Droid 2 R2-D2 edition are now $100. It can’t be a coincidence that just last week, we saw a Droid Incredible successor in the wild, and now the price has been lowered. Take from that what you will. Anyway, Verizon is having “ten days of sweet deals” from now until the iPhone 4 launches on February 10th, so keep your eyes open for some awesome deals on Android devices. Stay tuned to AndroidGuys for any more device price changes! Anyone going to pick up an Incredible or Droid 2 R2-D2 today?

DROID Incredible Helps Stop a Bullet

This image has no alt text

If someone were to tell you that your cell phone could stop a speeding bullet from penetrating your skin, would you believe them? Yea, me neither. That’s probably what a valet for an Atlanta nightclub thought when purchasing his DROID Incredible. He probably didn’t even think he’d ever be put into a situation where his life would be at stake at the hand of a gun as a valet. Thankfully, whatever scumbag shot him didn’t know that he had one of the toughest Android phones in the market sitting in his pocket. (Remember the DROID Incredible that got burned alive and still lived to make phone calls?) Anyway, the battery is what ultimately did the trick in saving this man from what would  have otherwise been a very horrible tragedy. Video below if you’re interested.

Droid Incredible Not Just For Phone Calls, Stops Bullets Too.

And you thought Android phones were just for making calls.  Well, the folks over at AP have posted a video of an extremely fortunate young man whose Droid Incredible battery saved his life.  John Garber, a valet for Club Halo in Atlanta, was leaving the premises when two other members, who were recently thrown out, began firing at one another outside the club.  A shot fired in Garbers direction hit him in the chest where his HTC Droid Incredible prevented the bullet from ultimately penetrating anything beyond his jacket.  It’s safe to say that HTC definitely makes some reliable hardware, don’t you think?  Only God knows what would have happened to that poor guy if he was carrying a Windows Phone 7 device.  Check out the video for the full account.

Gingerbread working on the Droid Incredible

Last week we told you that the developers over at XDA were nearing completion on a Gingerbread ROM for the Droid Incredible. Well, it appears that they have done it, and you can now install Gingerbread on a Droid Incredible.

On that note, it is an extremely alpha build with a lot of things still broken. It’s based on the SDK, and it won’t really be ready for general use until the actual Gingerbread source drops. Here are the major bugs that users will have to deal with:

No Sound
No Camera
Bluetooth

If you want to check it out for development purposes, however, hit up the XDA thread for a download link and instructions, and continue after the break for a brief video demonstration of Android 2.3 running on a Droid Incredible.

Droid Incredible Free Through Dell

This image has no alt text

dellincrediblefree

Dell now has the HTC Droid Incredible for sale at the price of free after a new two-year activation via their website. Actually it’s a bit more than free. Not only will shipping and activation fees be waived, but Dell will pay you with a $25 gift card to take the phone off their hands. While in terms of shelf life the Incredible is getting a bit old, it still ranks right up there with the best Android handsets offered through Verizon. If you have been waiting for an excuse to snag one up this is definitely it. Hit up Dell’s store now.

Unrevoked Working on Fix for Droid Incredible Root

unrevoked-incredible-udpate

Unrevoked is a great tool for rooting many a handset, but if any of those handsets should receive an OTA update like the HTC Droid Incredible recently did, the rooting method is liable to break. But the Unrevoked team doesn’t give up in the face of adversity, and has been working on a fix to get Incredible support back into the app. The fix is currently in testing, but very could be available by the weekend. Sweet.

HTC Mecha — AKA Incredible HD — Spied Running on Verizon’s LTE

This image has no alt text

thumb_550_htc_mecha_1

Who has time to think about things like the Droid 2 Global and Droid Pro when this monster looms in the near future. A new shot of the so-called Incredible HD, the EVO-like device headed to Verizon, confirms what everyone suspected: this thing carries LTE. It also features Android 2.2 and the new HTC Sense. Seeing as this thing will probably be making the rounds at CES, we sure hope it quickly gets upgraded to Gingerbread, which will no doubt be out by then.

Is the Droid Incredible HD going to be a Verizon LTE phone?

Famed Verizon tweeter @black_man_x is dropping some serious hints about the anticipated Droid Incredible HD, implying that it may be compatible with Verizon’s forthcoming LTE network.

We brought you a story a few weeks ago about an LG LTE device headed to Verizon, which was rumored to have been seen carried by Verizon’s CFO. Perhaps it wasn’t an LG device that was spotted, but instead the Incredible HD.

We’re not sure what is meant by “almost HD”, but really we can’t hold any of this accountable until some kind of announcement is made by Big Red. We’ll be following this one closely, so stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.

Double Your Battery Life on HTC Droid Incredible, Sprint EVO, Google Nexus One and Possibly Others!

This was originally posted by me on AndroidFeens

I repeatedly have non-Android fans, or day to day users ask me about battery life on the Droid Incredible.  I am posting this here because a) it’s still being asked and b) it still works.  I have been hoping to get this to a larger audience and help a larger group of consumers.  I hope that this assists people in extending their time with their phones.  I’d also like to ask for people with newer phones, G2, MyTouch 4G, Desire Z, etcetera  to try this and share in the comments.  I don’t know if battery life is as much of an issue with the newer phones, so please sound off in the comments section.

After the launch of the Evo, many users cried out that the battery life was at best decent and at worst abysmal. Most of the chatter seems to have settled down after the release of the OTA update.  Lost deep within the xda-forums Forum Link I came across a gem of information that apparently comes from someone within the support team of HTC.  I say that the information is lost because I cannot find the actual topic or post to source it correctly.

Thankfully I copied down the suggestions for how to “condition” the battery.  I am unsure as to whether or not that is technically what happens when we do this, but I’ll use the term.  This works for both the Droid Incredible and the Evo 4G. UPDATE: Nexus One Also Works.

Step 1. Charge the phone (turned on) for 8 hours.

Step 2.  Unplug the phone, turn it off, plug back in and charge for an hour.

Step 3. Unplug it, turn it on for 2 minutes. Plug it in and charge for 1 additional hour.

Your battery life should increase dramatically

I have done this on my phone.  Unfortunately I did not document the before and after information.  But I can verify that it makes a significant difference.  The longest that I have managed to use my phone is 24 hours with moderate to heavy use. I generally would get no more than 13 hours prior to this “hack”

I did not plug the phone in once during this time. The Nexus information was verified by@the_real_Newman Thanks Man

Conditions:

Automatic Updating – On

Wifi – On 40%

4G – On 40%

GPS – On 20%

Screen – On for nearly 18 hours of that

Not task managers, no setCPU profiles, no changes to any power settings.

Twitter, Facebook, News and Weather – auto update every 4 hours

Give it a try on your device and let us know how it goes and we’ll try to compile a list of devices that this method works on.

Verizon V CAST app store APK found inside leaked Droid Incredible OTA

Droid-Life has discovered that the upcoming OTA update for the Droid Incredible contains Verizon’s V CAST App store.

The OTA in question actually leaked a couple of weeks ago, and is currently the foundation of a version of the popular Droid Incredible Virtuous ROM. You can download this version of the ROM here, and if you navigate to system, and then apps, you will find the VCast.apk.

As you can see above, the app installs and opens just fine, however it hangs up with an “unable to verify your account information” error. It seems they haven’t made the V CAST app store live just yet, but with this Droid Incredible OTA update expected to drop soon, Verizon’s app store may be just around the corner. Stay tuned.

HTC Desire HD ROM ported to DROID Incredible, Desire, now EVO 4G

Perhaps you’ve seen the amazing boot time on the HTC Desire HD, which ranges anywhere from 3-5 seconds. A couple days ago, it was announced that the Motorola DROID Incredible and Desire had gotten a port of this snappy new ROM, which was showing off the same cool boot time as the original ROM. Now, however, it looks like these two devices aren’t the only ones seeing some ROM porting love, as the HTC EVO 4G has joined in the party.

Keep in mind that these ports should be considered half-baked, as there are issues with camera, wifi, 4G and more. But, if you’re willing to sacrifice those aspects for a speedy ROM, then back up your current configuration, and give it a go! Links to the xda threads are found below:

Seidio Innocell Extended Life Battery for HTC DROID Incredible

Although the HTC Droid Incredible from Verizon Wireless is a powerful Android device, the 1GHz Snapdragon processor among other features definitely drains the 1300 mAh stock battery down quite a bit. Some users have even reported battery loss up to around 30% per hour with normal use!

So, the obvious solution would be to get an extended battery right?

Well, one of the main marketed features of the HTC Droid Incredible was its sleek and stylish look, mainly attributed to the the ‘race-car’ inspired battery door. So if you don’t want to lose this look to your Droid Incredible, Seidio has got you covered.

The Seidio Innocell Slim Extended Life Battery gives Droid Incredible users more power without losing pocketability. A new battery door is not needed. Just pick up one of these batteries, pop it in, and enjoy the increased power and functionality of your HTC Droid Incredible!

HTC Desire HD ROM Ported to Desire and Incredible

desire-hd-rom-09-20-2010

No more than a few days after the phone was officially announced, the ROM for the HTC Desire HD was already available and loaded onto an HTC HD2. Now the ROM is getting used to a more familiar setting inside of not one but two HTC Android handsets. The firmware has been ported to both the HTC Droid Incredible and the original HTC Desire, bringing along the new HTC Sense and some slight speed improvements overall.

The build plays nicely with the two devices for the most part, aside from a lack of camera support and some minor glitches here and there. If you are one of the more adventurous types and fancy yourself giving this a try on your own phone, XDA Developers has all the information you will need for both the Incredible and Desire.
