Grab a red back for your Droid IncREDible

Can’t get enough RED?  No problem, Verizon has got you covered, and by covered, I mean the back of your battery compartment.  First there was white, and now we have red.  It should set you back about $25 bucks.  A small price to pay for showing off your trendy style.  Just give your favorite Verizon rep a call and order a new official HTC back cover using the following skews and you should be in business:

Droid Incredible Does Red and White Battery Covers

red-incredible1

That stock black battery cover got your HTC Droid Incredible feeling a bit bland? You can spice things up a bit with red or white replacements that are apparently now available in Verizon stores. The covers don’t show up on the Verizon website for order, but the above picture suggests with a bit of effort you should be able to track down a replacement to add some pizzazz to your phone and your life. Yeah, it’s a bit loud, but damn the new look will make you fall in love with the Incredible all over again.

DROID Incredible Froyo update rumored for September 1st

According to sources, the Froyo (Android 2.2) update may be coming out for the DROID Incredible on September 1st. This would round out the DROID family up to that frosty Android version, sans the DROID X.

According to the insider sources, the update will include all the standards for DROIDs on Froyo, including 720p video, improved quality and more. We’re also being told that there will be an increase in DI commercials and sales pitches,as the sales department at Verizon has been notified of the upgrade plans.

Keep in mind that, for now, this is only a rumor, but if any confirmations one way or the other, we’ll let you know.

Rumor: Droid Incredible Froyo OTA Hitting September 1st(Here We Go Again!)

Here we go again! According to the folks over at Droid-Life, “sources” are indicating that the official Froyo update will begin hitting handsets on September 1st.  Put this under the heading of “strictly rumor” for now though folks, however I really do hope Froyo goodness gets here soon!

Along with Froyo, users should also expect to get 720p HD video recording and a new boot screen.  Obviously at this point, this is just a rumor, so I am not taking anything as 100% fact until I see Froyo on actual Droid Incredible handsets. When this happens to mine, I will post so all of you know.

Droid Incredible Froyo Update Headed Our Way September 1st? [RUMOR]

This image has no alt text

incredible-froyo1

Things have been quiet concerning the HTC Droid Incredible’s update to Froyo since a rumor that it would be released last week fizzled out. That means it is just about time to start playing with Incredible owners’ emotions again. This time we are hearing the update should be headed to the handset beginning September 1st. We can also expect to see the Incredible get a slight boost from VZW marketing to build up to the update.

Along with Froyo and all of its bells and whistles, don’t forget the Incredible should be getting 720p HD video recording along with the update.

We aren’t going to get too excited, given the results of several previous Incredible/Android 2.2 rumors, but we will mark the date on our calendar and hope come the 1st we won’t be giving you a “Sorry, no Froyo” post.

More Droid X Delays but the Droid Incredible is Readily Available Now

It seems that manufacturers just cannot keep up with demand these days. First what seemed like and eternity with the Droid Incredible delays, now the Droid X by Motorola just cannot push out enough product.

Now with the switch in LCD’s the Incredible can be had as soon as August 25th but if you want to get your hands on the mother of all Motorola devices, you have to wait until the second week of September.

With how bad HTC and the Incredible were with the delays, I am surprised there was not and planning changes on behalf of Motorola to meet the expected demand. Are any of you still waiting to receive your X?

Warranty Claim may net you a Droid 2 or Incredible

A warranty claim for your phone may net you a newer, better Droid. There have been a couple instances so far that a user with a Droid Eris, and another user with a Motorola Droid 1, have been able to get a Droid 2 or Droid Incredible as a replacement for their broken phone. This is not to be confused with insurance claims, which will happen if you run over your phone with your car (is that even possible?). Warranty claims are for defective devices, not ones with smashed screens. This isn’t officially confirmed yet, but there’s no reason why Verizon wouldn’t do this, since the Droid Eris and Motorola Droid are now officially EOL devices.

Review: Star Wars Year By Year Illustrates The Saga’s Incredible Impact On Our Culture

On the heels of Celebration V this past weekend, DK Publishing is releasing a comprehensive timeline of events that influenced the Star Wars series — and how the fabric of our culture was forever changed by it. Star Wars Year by Year: A Visual Chronicle is a combination of a history lesson, trip down memory lane and an enchanting look behind the scenes.

The book starts out with a look at the events that shaped George Lucas’s vision, from the science fiction comics of his youth to meeting special effects pioneer, John Dykstra. From there on, chapters examine each year from 1973 to 2010, each passage packed with plenty of pictures, illustrations and bite-sized chunks of facts, trivia and fun.

Many of the toys, books and accessories inspired by the movies are found within these pages and it’s an enjoyable trip down nostalgic lane looking at action figures, comic books and more. There’s plenty of behind the scene photos and insight, related images (like the Skywalker Ranch Research Library), but the book also looks at world events, cultural changes and events in moviemaking that have affected Star Wars over the years.

The book was written by a few guys who know a little about Star Wars: Ryder Windham, author of more than sixty Star Wars titles, Pablo Hildago, managing editor of StarWars.com, Gus Lopez, creator of the Star Wars Collector’s Archive, and Daniel Wallace, who – in addition to writing the New York Times bestselling Star Wars: The New Essential Guide to Characters – has also written about all things Marvel, DC and Indiana Jones.

Star Wars Year by Year: A Visual Chronicle is a fun romp through the three-plus decades that the Star Wars saga has captivated our culture. If you have a Star Wars fan in your universe, pick up a copy — you (I mean he or she) will love it.

Disclosure: GeekDad received a review copy of this book from DK Publishing.

Droid Incredible Update to Android 2.2 Said to Be Poised for August 18 Release

This image has no alt text

htc-droid-incredible

Now that Verizon’s first handset to ship with Android 2.2 is out on shelves and the original Motorola Droid has resumed its update to Froyo, sights are set back on the HTC Droid Incredible, a handset that some of its owners believe is oft neglected in Big Red’s Android lineup. According to sources within Verizon, the Froyo update has been available for testing internally and is just about ready to start rolling out. Verizon purportedly has set a date of August 18th for the OTA to begin making its way to handsets.

And why not? August 18th has been pegged as the day for Flash 10.1 to reach a full release to Android phones running Froyo and is also a date Verizon has already indicated should mark the end of the OTA rollout for the original Droid. It is assumed on that day Verizon will most likely begin rolling out a second update to Moto Droid owners that will enable Flash on their devices.

Given other Sense-enabled devices have like the HTC EVO 4G been receiving their dose of Android 2.2, the 18th seems like a highly likely date for the Incredible to receive a serving of sweet sweet Froyo. As with all OTA updates we’ll believe it when we see it, but we may just hold out hope on this one.

Froyo Love For The HTC Droid Incredible Coming August 18th?

Froyo has been the subject of conversations lately and since the HTC Evo users have received their update, HTC Droid Incredible users are checking their devices daily in hopes to receive their frozen treat. HTC has the update ready, it’s now on the carriers to fulfill their duties to provide the update to their devices. The Motorola Droid started receiving their upgrades recently and is scheduled to receive flash support on August 18th. The Motorola Droid 2 which was launched yesterday, are shipping with Android 2.2 and the only Droid devices left to receive Froyo are the HTC Droid Incredible and the Motorola Droid X. The talks with sources suggest that the HTC Droid Incredible users will receive their update the same day the Motorola Droid is expected to receive flash support on August 18th. We’ll just have to wait and see, but it only makes sense.

Choosing the right ROM for your Droid Incredible

So, you’ve managed to root your Incredible, what now?  Aside from the obvious gain of free wireless tethering and the ability to remove certain applications which shall remain nameless (cough…CityID…cough) one of the most common questions I have come across is “Why should I bother to root?”  On a personal level, the Linux geek inside of me loves the ability to be in control of every aspect of my devices, which was one of the fundamental aspects that drew me away from RIM and towards Android in the first place.  For many, rooting equals one thing: flashing custom ROMs, which are modified builds of the software that makes your phone tick.  A custom ROM can offer a multitude of different things, such as an over or underclocked kernel, removal of a manufacturer’s custom UI, or an updated version of the Android OS which has not been officially released on your device.  Since the Incredible has been such a tough nut to crack until very recently, the development community has had a limited window of time to release custom ROMs, with many still in the debugging phase of development.  Nevertheless, these clever cats have managed to put out several fully functional and stable builds, and one or two not so stable ones.  Let’s take a look at a few of these ROMs, and what they can offer you in comparison to your stock build.

Jager ROM “Vanilla” and “Chocolate” – Android 2.1

Yes, sometimes ROMs come in more than one flavor.  Of all the builds I have flashed on my Incredible, the Jager ROM has been the most stable by far.  The “Vanilla” version is the far more “Sense-less” of the two, with only a few elements of the Sense UI remaining, one example being the lock screen.  This build uses LauncherPro in place of the Sense Launcher, and also replaces the default messages and mail applications with K-9 and Handcent SMS respectively.  The “Chocolate” build, on the other hand, comes loaded with Sense, but allows the option to remove aspects of it.  This build is overclocked and undervolted, which aims to be faster than the stock kernel, and comes loaded with a variety of apps.  Again, from a stability standpoint, these two ROMs offer a truly stable experience and are a safe bet for trying out your first flash.  It should be noted that this ROM is still using Android 2.1, so if you’re looking for Froyo, this isn’t the one for you.

Unrevolved ROM – Android 2.1

Unlike the Jager ROMs, the Unrevolved version is considered to be “truly vanilla,” meaning that all traces of the Sense UI have been removed.  It is also has a slightly more customized feel than the Jager variant, including an updated bootloader and lock screen, as well as the inclusion of Dev Tools.  In terms of stability, however, there are a number of known issues which have pushed some users towards other builds, including a non-functional screen time out, difficulty turning off the alarm, and sporadic system freezes that require a battery pull to reset.  Nevertheless, if you are looking for a completely vanilla Android build, and can handle a few hiccups now and then, the Unrevolved ROM is a solid option.  Again, this ROM uses Android 2.1.

CyanogenMod Incredible 6 Test ROM – Android 2.2

Of all the ROMs we have covered so far, this one is by far the most buggy, and is still very much in the testing phase.  That being said, this is the only ROM which will bring you Android 2.2 without first having to flash the leaked 2.x Radio, which is required by ROM’s using the leaked OTA 2.2 update.   While the vast majority of bugs have been squashed, this build is not without its flaws, including Skype Mobile being broken, some reports of the camera being unusable, and a lack of LED notifications.  This ROM is currently available as nightly builds only, and are available via the ROM Manager or for manual download here.

SkyRaider by ihtfp69 – Android 2.2 (requires Radio update)

This is one of the newer ROMs on the circuit, but has quickly gained popularity due to its improved stability over the CyanogenMod nightly builds mentioned before.  This is by far the most stable 2.2 ROM available, but it does require you to flash the leaked Radio, a process involving downgrading to a completely stock build before flashing the Radio, rooting all over again, and THEN installing the ROM.  If you are desperate for 2.2, however, the process is worth the effort, as the only real issue is a lack of LED notifications.  This build even allows for video recording in 720p, something CyanogenMod does not offer at this time.  This ROM also features a “Senseless” script for removing most aspects of HTC Sense if that tickles your fancy.

These are just a few of the ROMS currently available, which I chose specifically for their ability to demonstrate the levels of diversity among the various builds.  Many of the other ROMS differ very little from one another, some of which are practically stock builds.  So if you have taken the rooting plunge and are now looking to try out something different, perhaps a custom ROM is just what the doctor ordered.  A word to the wise though, before flashing a new ROM, ALWAYS perform a Nandroid backup of your current build, and be sure to perform a full wipe afterward.  If you are unfamiliar with any of the terms or concepts described here, there is a wealth of information available on the XDA Droid Incredible forum. You can also find an excellent index of Incredible ROMs here, happy flashing everyone!

Droid Incredible Shipping Issues Resolved?

For anyone that has been waiting on the Droid Incredible for the last month, your worries may finally be at an end. Verizon’s product page clearly states that the Incredible will be shipped by August 6th, only 2 days away from now. HTC was having trouble manufacturing the Incredibles because of a screen issue and at one point people had to wait almost a month before the phone even shipped. It looks like the issue has been resolved since HTC has switched from AMOLED to SLCD screens. The fact that the Droid X was just recently released probably made the demand for the Incredible less as well, which probably helped to fix the shipping issue.

Hopefully by the time Friday rolls around there wont even be a big red tag next to the Incredible, but I’m guessing that since people wont have to wait as long for the phone, this may not be the end of the shipment issues. Like the Droid X though, which you may have to wait almost 2 weeks just to ship, the issue will be demand and not screen problems. Hopefully when the next big Android phone comes out the manufacturers will have more available from the beginning. I wouldn’t expect it unfortunately. They still underestimate Android and the community that follows it.

Droid Incredible Froyo initial impressions

.

.

The Droid Incredible recently had Froyo leaked, and I got my hands on it. So here it is, the Droid Incredible with 2.2.

Boot Animation:

As soon as you turn the device on, you are greeted with a fancy new boot animation. It features the specs of the device, and the Droid Incredible’s Droid eye:

Click here to view the embedded video.

Apps:

VZ Navigator, a revamped Camera app that allows you to snap a picture any way you want, be it landscape, portrait, or upside down, and a camcorder app that allows you to shoot in 720p, are just some of the changes to the apps on the Droid Incredible. Throw in an app sharing app, 3G mobile hotspot, Amazon Mp3, HTC LED Flashlight, News via RSS, the Evo’s Youtube App, and a Video gallery, and we are good to go.

VZ Navigator: Just what you would expect, Verizon Wireless Navigation. $9.99 a month for something we already have.

Camera: The camera app has been changed, so that when you rotate your phone, the icons rotate with you, allowing you to shoot photos any way you damn well please. Also, face detection has been added.

Camcorder: 720p. All I need to say. It looks absolutely stunning. About time. Also, you can record with the LED on for nighttime videos, and face detection had been added.

App Sharing: An app that allows you to share other apps via Mail, messages, and many more options.

3G mobile hotspot: Share your 3G connection with other devices, like a laptop, other phone, or a media device.

Amazon Mp3: Buy and download your favorite songs via Amazon Mp3.

HTC Flashlight: Similar to the Moto Droid’s Droidlight, this app allows you to use your phones dual-LED as a flashlight. No root required.

News: Allows you to subscribe to TalkAndroid (and other sites, but why would you need too?) via RSS feeds.

Youtube: The update also gave us the Evo’s Youtube app, which runs better than the old one.

Video Gallery: Takes you straight to your videos that you recorded in sweet, sweet 720p. Did I mention you can record in 720p?

Widgets:

Also included in the Froyo update are a bunch of new widgets.

Mail, Messaging, Contacts, Calander, Friend Stream, and News Widgets: All of these widgets are scrollable, and do just what you expect them to.

Market: A widget that show you featured apps available in the Android Market.

Sync All: Allows you to sync all of your accounts at once.

UI Changes:

No UI changes at all, with the exception of under Settings, Sound and Display are now seperate. Still no viewing Sense in landscape mode. Also, you can now set a password, pin, or pattern to unlock your screen.

Wallpapers:

One new live wallpaper, which is the Nexus  Nerual Network. One color scheme. Runs great.

Speed:

As the update came with Froyo, it’s bound to be a lot faster right?

Sort of…

The reason why I don’t notice a big speed difference is because it already ran like a champ. That being said, it has improved drastically in some areas, like live wallpapers. I used to never use live wallpapers because it always slowed my device down. Not any more. This baby hauls while using the Nerual Network wallpaper,  as well as all the other one’s I tried out. Bottom line: It’s still fast, and in areas where it wasn’t so fast, it is now.

Froyo Features:

Included in the update is all the Froyo features you expect: Apps2SD, Update All in the Market, and everything else. My Linpack scores wobble around the 30’s-40’s (compared to 7 before Froyo), and my Quadrant scores are about 1100 (compared to 400 before Froyo), showing the speed change that 2.2 promised us. Flash works great, and you can watch videos straight from the page you are on (no going to HTC’s Flash Player).

Battery Life

I haven’t used the device with Froyo for a whole day, but as far as I can tell, the battery life has not changed.

Wrapup:

All-in-all, the official Froyo update is going to be huge, and will keep you loving your phone for months to come. Do you have the leaked Froyo installed on your Incredible? Let us know what you think in the comments

Flash 10.1 Running on the Droid Incredible

This image has no alt text

In case you missed it, an official build of Android 2.2 with HTC Sense was leaked for the Droid Incredible yesterday, and lest you forget that means you can now experience Flash 10.1 on the peppy Android handset. As more and more phones prep for their Froyo updates, Adobe is gearing up to launch Flash for Mobile out of beta. That event will be happening in the middle of August, so it makes sense that so many phones would be getting the Android 2.2 treatment in time for Flash’s debut. Check out the video below from Droid-Life to see what to expect on the Incredible.

How to install the official Droid Incredible boot animation

What is it with people an boot animations? We only see them for a few seconds, maybe only once per day or not even at all. We even showed you the Samsung Captivate boot animation a few days ago. But as well all know, with the Android community, it’s all about customizing. Recently a rogue OTA update went out to a small batch of Incredible owners and one of the new features is the official Droid Incredible boot animation.

First off, you there are a few things you should know:

  1. You perform these steps on an unrooted Droid Incredible via the Android SDK (also works on the original Droid)
  2. The command for the audio file may not work the first time. If it doesn’t work, run it a few more times and it should work.
  3. You need the HTC Incredible USB driver that installs with HTC Sync. Grab them HERE

That being said, let’s get our hands dirty.

  1. First, download the official Droid Incredible boot animation
  2. Unzip the files into your Android-SDK/tools folder
  3. Make sure nothing is currently selected, then hold Shift and right click inside your tools folder
  4. Choose “Open command window here” and type in the following commands: adb push bootanimation.zip /data/local and then adb push android_audio.mp3 /data/local followed by adb reboot
  5. Your phone should now reboot with the official Droid Incredible boot animation

If you don’t have the Android SDK installed, you can check out our guide to installing it.

Droid Incredible Gets One-Click Root Thanks to Unrevoked

thumb_550_unrevoked

It was by no means easy for Android hackers to break down the walls surrounding the HTC Droid Incredible, but the task was accomplished. If the whole process of rooting your Incredible the old-fashioned way is just a bit too much to wrap your head around, Unrevoked has now made their one-click root method functional for the DI. You still need a bit of preparation that actually involves more than just one click, so don’t think this will be strictly child’s play, but it sure is a whole lot simpler than before.

[Note: We are not 100 percent sure if this root method is still compatible with the latest Incredible OTA being pushed starting today. If it does work, then this is indeed a day that may rival that of the Droid Incredible launch for owners of the handset. Feel free to try it out and let us know in the comments.]
