Travel Apps and Information

The Transportation Security Administration has created a free MyTSA mobile web app that answers basic security questions like: What kind of liquids can be brought onto the plane, and what will set off the metal detector?

You can find MyTSA on your smart phone at the www.tsa.gov/mobile website or look for it on the USA.gov Apps gallery.

Today is also National Opt-Out Day — when some air travelers say they’ll opt out of the new full-body scanners at airports.

The protest began online about two weeks ago, could be a headache leading to long delays at airport checkpoints.

The inventor of the full body scanner, Dr. Steven Smith, says he doesn’t know what the fuss is all about. He is especially surprised by the fears there’s too much radiation.

He says travelers should not fear the machine despite fears over the radiation it emits.

“It gives the about the equivalent of radiation to about an hour anywhere on the Earth’s surface or about two minutes on an airline flight,” Smith said.

TSA uses two types of imaging technology, millimeter wave and backscatter. Currently, there are 385 imaging technology units at 68 airports. The puffer machine detects explosives and illegal drugs at airports.

Alaska Airlines has Free WiFi and Google is also sponsoring free Gogo Inflight Internet on United Airlines and US Airways. HasWifi lets you search by flight number, letting you know which flights provide WiFi service.

The week of Thanksgiving is typically Amtrak’s busiest travel period of the year. AmtrakConnect Wi-Fi is available on all Acela Express trains on the East Coast, in all ClubAcela lounges and inside many stations.

Train builder Talgo plans to deliver wireless broadband and live passenger information system on all Talgo trains servicing the West Coast from Vancouver, Canada through Seattle, Portland and Eugene, Oregon on the Amtrak Cascades service. When delivered in 2012, Oregon-owned Talgo trains will join five older Talgo-America train sets; Washington state owns three, and Amtrak owns two (pdf).

Amtrak passenger Wi-Fi service began on the Amtrak Acela fleet on the 1st March 2010 with earlier service in Utah and New Mexico.

The US Department of Transportation has National Traffic and Road Closure Information with Local and State Transit Links.

Traffic Conditions Information is available at:

INRIX TRAFFIC is a free, ad-free app that delivers traffic information. It delivers real-time traffic flow on every major roadway in 126 cities across North America and 100 cities across five countries in Europe.

If you are a little agitated with Samsung and T-Mobile because of the delayed OTA update for the Samsung Vibrant, you might rest a little easier as Samsung has stated on their Facebook page that more details regarding the OTA update will be coming next week.

T-Mobile and Samsung are hearing your questions regarding timing for the Vibrant software upgrade. We are continuing to work diligently to provide you with improvements in an effort to provide you with a high quality experience. We plan to have more information to share next week regarding timing on when these updates will be delivered to customers over-the-air. Thank you for your patience.

Hopefully soon after, they’ll be pushing out an OTA update to address some of the issues we’ve been having including a GPS fix. Samsung recently stated that an update for the Vibrant was available on their Kies program, but T-Mobile quickly urged people to wait for an official OTA update from them. It’s good to know that both T-Mobile and Samsung are aware of the deep frustration this issue is causing customers. Other than the GPS issue, what are some other issues you are experiencing with your Vibrant?

“In this tutorial we are going to cover completing the Information Tracker using DroidDraw to design the layout of this project. This will give you insight into an alternative to the stock layout manager in the eclipse environment and how DroidDraw functions. DroidDraw can be your best friend when designing Android applications or your worse enemy if you don’t know the layout of the application and how it works. This will show you the basics to this program and how to incorporate it into your development process.  This is significantly easier than the previous post but will teach skills on other programs to help development such as DroidDraw.”

Antennas App Gives Detailed Information About Your Coverage

If you’ve had your phone very long at all, you probably have a pretty good idea of where you have good coverage, and where you don’t. Still, sometimes it would be nice to really have a break down of what towers you were connecting to and what kind of signal you were pulling from each one.

Enter Antennas. This app will show you what towers are in your area, which one(s) you’re connected to, and what kind of signal you’re receiving from each tower. If you’re on a 2G network, it is possible to receive info on multiple towers at once, as your signal spans across them all. For CDMA or networks that are exclusively 3G, you’re only going to get information on the one tower you are actively communicating with.

If this sounds useful, grab it from the market via the QR code below, and be sure and let us know what you think! I may be getting this one myself…
