Existing Events Stream By on FLUD for iPad and iPhone

Ever sat back and thought “Gee, I wish my news feed had much more of a ‘Hollywood Squares’ feel to it?” Truth be told, you most likely haven’t evet thought that. But, trust me, it’s considerably more elegant than it sounds: An ordered grid of news and social content can speed up your day-to-day browsing by letting you skim via your preferred providers’ content without having the require to open and peruse tabs individually. This media grid format isn’t new to the iOS platform, but given that FLUD has lately arrived in the Android Market it seemed a good time to reintroduce 1 of title="Best News Readers for iOS Devices" href="http://www.appcraver.com/top-news-apps-for-iphone-ipad/">my favorite iOS news readers.

Regardless of whether you’re pulling rss feeds on an iPhone or an iPad, the multi-thumbnail info grid — or stack depending upon the device — promised to revolutionize what you expect from your digital every day news. There’s no doubt that FLUD has a lot to offer you, but a year soon after debuting with a flurry of accolades and awards, is this app nonetheless worth a download?

We can’t help but notice what appears to be an upwards battle with the entry of the HTC Flyer tablet.  Amidst the multiple 10-inch, dual-core Honeycomb running devices, HTC has opted to usher in the 7-inch, single core (although 1.5 GHz) device running Gingerbread instead.  What do you think?  Wise move on HTC’s part?  Check out the pics below for a comparison between all of the devices, courtesy of our friends over at Engadget.  Don’t forget to let us know what you think in the comments below.   Read More…

Take and Sync Notes with Notability for iPad

style=' float: left; padding: 4px; margin: 0 7px 2px 0;' class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-25216" title="notability-iPad" src="http://www.appcraver.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/notability-iPad-300x225.png" alt="" width="300" height="225" />Notability is an excellent note-taking tool for the iPad.

title="download notability for ipad" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/notability/id360593530?mt=8&partnerId=30&siteID=saW0nB/fQ6o" target="_blank">Notability nails the balance between apps that favor creating typed notes or hand-written ones. While it is primarily designed for using the iPad’s on-screen keyboard, there is a very-easy-to-use way with Notability to merge drawings, illustrations, or other graphics.

The interface is well designed for solid maneuverability and, like many iPad/iPhone apps, has a design that harkens back to Notability’s pre-digital counterpart, a notebook. In landscape mode notes can easily be selected through the familiar side-anchored menu.

If you want to record while taking notes, just tap the red button for including voice. In all a note could include text, audio, and an image for a very dynamic alternative to the usual text-based messaging applications.

What Does ASUS Have Up their Sleeve to Rival the Next iPad?

This image has no alt text

ASUS just showed off a whole lineup of Android tablets at CES, but chairman Jonney Shih is already touting what’s on the horizon. He apparently has the inside scoop one what will be powering the Apple iPad 2 — supposedly a dual-core ARM Cortex A9-based chip — and claims his company’s future NVIDIA Tegra 2 tablets will have the edge. In fact, Shih said, “to really compete it will take [Apple] some time” to catch up to what ASUS is bringing.

Throw Android 3.0 Honeycomb on whatever they have coming up and I’d say Shih might be talking the truth. In fact, his real competition might end up being Android tablets such as the Motorola XOOM and LG G-Slate.

iPad Vrs Xoom

Motorola’s Xoom tablet (Wikipedia), running Honeycomb, is expected to retail for $699 at Best Buy (without a contract), according to DroidLife. Their comparison chart (below) contrasts the XOOM ($699) with Apple’s 32GB 3G iPad ($729).

You could argue it’s not a fair comparison. The iPad2 is expected to be out soon. The MacRumors blog reports the next iPad’s resolution will be 2048×1536, or double the current iPad resolution. It’s expected to have dual cameras, HDMI output and other features claimed by the Motorola Xoom.

New iPad Breach

U.S. prosecutors have charged two people with stealing email addresses and other data of about 120,000 users of Apple’s iPad after finding a security weakness in AT&T Inc servers, reports Reuters. Prosecutors said a “brute force” attack over several days last June affected iPad users who accessed the Internet through AT&T’s 3G network.

Among the possible victims were celebrities, businesses executives and government officials like New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer, movie mogul Harvey Weinstein and perhaps then-White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, prosecutors said.

Daniel Spitler and Andrew Auernheimer have each been charged with one count of fraud and one count of conspiracy to access a computer without authorization. Auernheimer made headlines last June, reports Computer World, when he discovered that AT&T’s website was disclosing the e-mail addresses and the unique ICC-ID numbers of multiple iPad owners. Claiming that he wanted to help AT&T improve its security, he wrote a computer script to extract the data from AT&T and then went public with the information.

In other security news, Facebook announced last week that it would begin allowing third-party applications and websites to request that users share both their mobile phone number and address. Now, the company has said that it will be putting the new feature on hold while it makes changes to make sure that Facebook users are aware of the potential for data sharing.

iPad Coming to Verizon?

Verizon Wireless will sell a CDMA version of Apple’s iPad tablet, Francis Shammo, chief financial officer of Verizon Communications said yesterday. No word on price or data.

Verizon Wireless announced yesterday that it will begin selling the iPhone on its CDMA network to all customers on Feb. 10. AT&T had been the exclusive carrier of the smartphone since 2007. Verizon currently sells the iPad in its stores, but packaged with their mobile 3G/WiFi device for $629.99 to $829.99.

Apple sold about 7.5 million iPads through September and, according to Goldman Sachs, may sell more than 37 million of the devices this year.

In other news, the personal hotspot feature that debuted on the Verizon iPhone yesterday will be making its way to all iPhones in iOS 4.3, reports Boy Genius Report. There will likely need to be carrier support for this feature, however.

Users who don’t mind jailbreaking their phone, can also install MyWi to enable WiFi tethering. The MyWi website says it will work with all jailbroken iPhones (including 2G/3G/3GS/4) and iPad on 3.1.2 or later.

Other iPhone WiFi apps include:

  • WiFi HD. Turns your iOS device into a Wi-Fi hard drive. Connect to a Wi-Fi network and bring up the app. Then you can browse and manage the files on your device via a web browser on any other device or computer connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  • Air Sharing. Like WiFi HD, this app turns your device into a Wi-Fi hard drive. In addition to being able to view and manage files via a Web browser, you can mount it as a drive in Windows, Mac or Linux for even easier access.
  • Walkie Talkie. Lets you talk between two iOS devices. Just connect to the same Wi-Fi network, open the app, and it will automatically connect the devices. Then just press the button to talk.
  • WiFi-Where. Scans the air waves and shows all the nearby Wi-Fi networks and their details, such as SSID, signal (including raw RSSI), encryption status, and MAC address.
  • yFy Network Finder. Another WiFi stumbler. In addition to a text listing, you can see a map view of detected spots.

Chasing the iPad

Motorola last week revealed its new Android-based Xoom tablet, which the company hopes will dethrone Apple’s iPad. It was voted Best of the Show by C/Net.

The Xoom will be available in stores in the first quarter of 2011 in 3G form. All of the 3G Xooms “are capable” of being upgraded to 4G later this year. The Tablet offers Dual-Core processing, Google’s Honeycomb Platform, and 1080p HD video content support.

Compared to the iPad, its 10.1-inch, 1280×800 display plays video and other rich web content seamlessly with Adobe Flash, and features a front-facing 2-megapixel camera for video chats over Wi-Fi or 3G/4G LTE, as well as a rear-facing 5-megapixel camera that captures video in 720p HD.

It also features a built-in gyroscope, barometer, e-compass, accelerometer and adaptive lighting for new types of applications, Google Maps 5.0 (with 3D interaction), and delivers access to over 3 million Google eBooks and thousands of apps from Android Market.

Engadget, Gizmodo, Liliputing, and Arm Devices review some of the dozens of tablets introduced last week at CES. They’re all chasing the iPad.

The big four US wireless carriers all introduced tablets and new smartphones. They include:

2010 iPad Sales: 10M

Apple’s total 2010 iPad sales are expected to be around 10 million, outpacing sales of the original iPhone. The iPad debuted in April.

DigiTimes reported that the company may ship 65 million of the tablet devices in 2011 — that from estimates by companies that manufacture parts for the iPad. That far outstrips current market estimates of about 45 million.

The Taiwanese Web site also says that the iPad 2 will have three new versions, with dual cameras and a faster processor. It is expected to be available in March or April and is rumored to connect to UMTS, CDMA and WiFi. Sprint and Verzion use CDMA. Mashable has a Comprehensive Guide to iPad 2 Rumors.

Apple will have sold 8.5 million iPads in the US by the end of this year, according to eMarketer estimates.

By 2012, eMarketer forecasts nearly 41 million Americans will have a tablet device, or 12.8% of the total. More than 1 in 5 Americans will own a tablet by 2014, says a new survey by Harris Interactive, and 37 percent of them will own them for business use, according to the survey. About half of all tablet owners plan to use the devices for social networking.
