Workers at a Chinese factory that supplies Apple are still suffering the effects of exposure to a chemical cleaning agent more than a year after the incident.
Once again we find our arch nemesis in the cross-hairs. Although the iPhone is still running the same hardware it started with last summer, it’s still a force to be reckoned with. Although I am Android-biased, as a tech enthusiast I respect the iPhone and will agree that it does have a lot to offer. However, we have an ace-in-the-hole, I’m not referring to flash capability, Verizon’s new HTC Thunderbolt is on the horizon. Does the new HTC Thunderbolt have what it takes to bury this monster, or will we have to wait for a dual-core to emerge?

The promise of an iPhone that no longer drops calls may be tempting many AT&T customers to switch over to Verizon. But is the grass really greener?
It depends. There are many indications the Verizon iPhone offers superior connectivity and far less dropped calls than its AT&T counterpart. However, other studies show that AT&T has faster downloads and is throwing free minutes at existing customers in an effort to keep them.
Deciding which way to go is not a clear-cut decision as there are many factors impacting each phone’s performance.

Verizon may not have garnered the usual Apple circus for its sales of the iPhone 4, analysts say, but don’t underestimate how big those sales might be–or the benefit to Apple.

I had to unlock my iPhone to use pre-paid T-Mobile voice minutes. The video (below) shows you how to unlock a new iPhone. I didn’t unlock my old iPhone GS myself, though. My friend Roger did it in about 15 minutes. No problems. I’ve been using my prepaid voice account on T-Mobile for about a year.

Rumors have been swirling about the HTC Thunderbolt and it’s rumored delays and Mobile Hotspot feature. While Skype not being prepared in time for launch was one of the reasons we’d been given by tipsters, we suggested that timing and strategy could also come into play. We’re now learning exactly what that strategy might be.
According to our sources, Verizon is delaying the launch of the Thunderbolt to ensure those purchasing the Verizon iPhone don’t have buyer’s remorse and return their iPhone for an Android. With Verizon’s new (non-coincidental) 14-day return policy, that would put the Thunderbolt launch date at February 24th or beyond to escape new Verizon iPhone owners from returning/exchanging for the TB. New information is suggesting that buyer’s remorse could strike iPhone owners after finding out the Thunderbolt will:
These are two features the Verizon iPhone won’t have. And then in the 2nd Quarter we’re hearing the Droid Incredible will launch with Global 3G connectivity/capabilities… something else the iPhone doesn’t have. It’s possible the hardware has the capability to connect globally and Verizon is locking it down, but that’s another issue altogether.
We won’t likely ever hear the official reason the HTC Thunderbolt is/was delayed, but I would be surprised to find out if strategically timing it around the iPhone wasn’t an issue. The iPhone will move massive numbers and the Thunderbolt already has a large and growing following, so attempting to maximize their sales with timing tactics makes sense. Unfortunately, it could come at the expense of some customers who would’ve preferred to switch back to Android after trying the iPhone.
There are plenty of people that would disagree including the folks at iSource.com – I can appreciate their point. Remember that iPhone vs. EVO 4G cartoon where the iPhone user doesn’t care WHAT the Android Phone’s features are, they want an iPhone no matter what? I can imagine many of the initial Verizon iPhone customers won’t care WHAT is being launched on the Android side… they just want a Verizon iPhone much like cartoon guy wants an iPhone and doesn’t care about the EVO 4G that prints money.
That being said, I’ve spoken with plenty of people personally who aren’t sure whether to get an iPhone or Android so I know there are a lot of people in between. Verizon is trying to prevent this group from changing their minds. It isn’t cheap for someone to change their mind with restocking, repackaging, phone becoming technically “used”, customer service which costs overhead, and much more.
The iPhone is a great device and all… but obviously Verizon isn’t foolish enough to think every Apple owner will be so happy with their purchase they’d never consider switching to Android. The choice may have been more clear to typical consumers in the past, but Android is now seen on par with Apple if not exceeding them. And if you don’t believe me, let’s see how many people complain about lack of Hotspot, lack of simultaneous voice-and-data, and the DINC2 being able to connect globally when the iPhone hits Verizon on the 10th.
IFixit’s teardown reveals that most of the Verizon iPhone’s parts are not interchangeable with those from a GSM iPhone 4. Qualcomm’s MDM6600 Gobi radio chip will support both HSPA+ data rates up to 14.4 Mbps and CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Rev. A/Rev. B., but it only has antennas for Verizon’s CDMA service.
The phone supports only two cellular frequency bands while Apple supports five bands in their GSM version used by AT&T. Wiens says this is particular significant because it is “a sign that Apple may be considering unifying the CDMA and GSM iPhones in the future.” Verizon’s iPhone will not be a world traveler since it will not work in as many international locations as its AT&T counterpart.
If you send the same SMS messages over and over again, or if you have a large group of people that you occasionally message, Canned can be a helpful, familiar-feeling time-saver.
A recent survey conducted by research firm uSamp has uncovered some startling news. Among Verizon’s current Android and BlackBerry users, 56 percent are planning to switch to Apple’s iPhone when it launches next week. Additionally 26 percent of AT&T’s iPhone users also plan to make the move. We just aren’t buying it, and here is why.
The survey conducted polled a total of 727 people chosen from uSamp’s database. That number includes both AT&T customers and Verizon customers interviewed. Assuming that it breaks down evenly, that means that only roughly 364 members of the poll were actual Verizon smartphone users, a mere 0.004 percent of the 9.3 million smartphone subscribers added last year alone. While we’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume their polling methods are fair and true, such a small sample size really can’t be representative of what half of Verizon’s smartphone subscribers will really do.
Remember, many users are locked in on two-year contracts and don’t plan on paying the fees it would cost to break such a contract. By the time their contract runs out, who knows if they will even want the iPhone anymore or if they will have been enticed by some other new Android or BlackBerry handset. We’re just not buying that over half of Verizon’s users of those handsets will jump ship for the iPhone, merely on the economics of it alone.
But don’t let our opinion be the true measure, we want your voice to be heard. Do you plan on ditching your current Verizon smartphone for the iPhone?
