It is the LAST Day to Register for the BigAndroidBBQ (25 Tickets Left)

If you have been waiting to get your tickets to the BigAndroid BBQ (seriously?) then this is your moment.  If you do not act now, you will just miss out on this year’s festivities.  As of this morning there are now 25 tickets left to the event which takes location just two weekends from now.  Once these are sold, that is it.  Yes, that means we are nearing capacity for the venue.

Tickets are running out.  Get yours NOW!

(Specially if you want a personalized name badge)

With the Big Android BBQ two weeks away, there are only 25 tickets left to the event!  If you were waiting to get yours, do not wait any longer as you may miss out!

When the last 25 tickets are sold, we are at capacity for the event.  We just can not fit anymore individuals into sessions or the venue!  This is both an exciting and “scary” thing for us as we have a lot of people coming to the world’s largest and original community run event focusing on Android.

Also, if attendees want to get a personalized name badge, the deadline to register is right now as properly.  Anyone registering after nowadays will get a general attendee tag that lets them into the event but does not have their name on it.

Go to www.bigandroidbbq.com to get your tickets and information.  See you there!

Google Down to the Last Few: Samsung, HTC, and one “Big Surprise” all Possibilities for the New Nexus Prime

Ever considering that Google told use that they were planning another Nexus device to pilot Ice Cream Sandwich, we’ve waited patiently (feel: spamming F5 on Google’s weblog every 5 minutes) to see what’s in store for us next. Rumor has it that Google has narrowed it down to just a couple of large players, which includes one “big surprise”. And what a few large players they are.

We continue to see a few devices rise from the dozens, so we have to assume that there is at least some truth to the rumors. Among these supposed prototypes are a Samsung device with a dual-core 1.5GHz OMAP4460, and HTC with dual-core 1.8 Ghz Krait Snapdragon MSM8960 (/drool), a Sony Ericsson with dual-core 1.two GHz Scorpion MSM8吸, and an LG with dual-core 1.five GHz OMAP4460. Rumor also tells of a “rather svelte” “really large surprise” with an Intel CPU, which is intriguing simply because it would be Intel’s 1st foray into the Android market. That said, could they be any a lot more vague?

Still, any one of these devices would make for an outstanding telephone. This author has his eye set on the HTC device for a lot more than a few factors, the largest of which getting its unreleased Krait Snapdragon processor. This CPU delivers up to twice the density of any chip previous to it, although its 28nm draw does far more with much less power. Many would argue that these processors won’t be prepared in time for a release this year, but sources tell us that HTC is working about-the-clock to make this a reality. Definitely, a device such as this has the prospective to be the next “developer telephone”, a la the Nexus One. HTC’s stance on rooting just makes it all the much more appealing.

As to the “big surprise”, it had much better be a doozy. We’ve observed Android released on so several devices (phones, watches, Television’s, etc), that Google would have to release an iPhone to genuinely catch this author off-guard.

Google I/O Registration Opens Monday, Tickets Won’t Last Long

This image has no alt text

If you plan on attending Google I/O this year, you better camp out a spot in front of your computer come Monday. The AndroidDev team just tweeted that tickets will be on sale after the weekend, but don’t expect them to hang around much longer than that. Google I/O is an extremely popular event with an unfortunately limited number of open spots for those who wish to attend.

Google already opened up pre-registration for some past attendees, but this is the general public’s first crack at making their way in. Phandroid will be there, that’s for sure. Will you?

What You Missed on Last Night’s AGTN!

We had another great show last night on the Android Guys Thursday Night Droid-cast! Here are the highlights from the show last night:

  • We talked with Meredith Flynn-Ripley, the CEO from Heywire and a fellow Bostonian to Ray!  She talked about her app for social communication.  Free texting worldwide!
  • Adam Wilson from Orbotix came on the show, and he was OUTSTANDING.  You do not want to miss this segment of last night’s show.  Adam is one of the developers of Sphero, a remote controlled ball that works with your Android handset.  Adam was a hoot to be sure, make sure to check him out!
  • Ray did his “Rayge Against the Machine” segment this week, this time talking about the fact the Cliq XT is not getting an update and is stuck at 1.5.
  • We talked about the idea of tablets killing the laptop market, and decided that it all depends on the user, make sure to chime in with your opinion after listening.
  • We gave the first clue of the #SUPAHDUPAHCONTEST!  You are going to need to tune in to get the first clue to win!

All that and much more during the show, if you are a regular listener, you know that we are loose and fun on AGTN.  You can watch the archive on Streamly.TV or you can listen either on blogtalkradio or now on iTunes!

Smartphone Sales up 75% Last Quarter, to Reach 24% Overall

Research firm Strategy Analytics reported on the overall sale of smartphones in the last quarter of 2010 compared to the same timeframe the year before. In the last 3 months of the year, 94 million smartphones were sold, which is a 75% increase over the last quarter of 2009. Sales of RIM and Apple devices were up slightly, but the main reason for the large increase was the sale of — you guessed it — Android devices. Between Samsung, Motorola, HTC, and LG, Android phones were counted in the “other” group, which accounted for 37% of all smartphone sales.

Not surprising that basically 1 in every 4 phones sold in the last quarter was a smartphone, and a large percentage of smartphone sold were Android. This is great for Android owners, and it draws in the development community, and gets us more, higher-quality apps on our favorite platform. And while Verizon’s iPhone launch may shake things up a bit, Android sales really seem to be in a very stable position. The upcoming year will be interesting to watch.

An Android Robot? I’m Sure it isn’t the First or Last, but Still Cool

This image has no alt text

What’s that you say? Another mechanical Android robot? Yea, we’ve seen this before – some bigger and some smaller – but we love seeing the mascot in all its various shapes and sizes regardless of how many times it’s been done. Its name is RIC Android, apparently – not the coolest of them all, but dammit, who cares? He’s going to strut his stuff no matter what. This was just one of the many gems to come out of the Google Developer Days in Tokyo, one of the many Google Android-centric events we posted about earlier today. [via Androinica]

Looking for Last Minute Holiday Gifts? Try Some Comics

I decided to ditch my regular Comics Spotlight this week and instead wrap-up the year by recommending some of the comics I’ve reviewed this past year in case anyone out there is looking for last minute gifts.

Batman's Sons Celebrate Christmas by the Dark Cat

You can’t buy this particular comic but you can point your friends toward the holiday cheer in the most recent strips.

I tried to keep this list to what might be in your local comic shop or available in trade in at your local bookstore. But I’ve included Amazon or store links when possible just in case you’re willing to pay for last minute shipping.

Independents:

1. The Road to God Knows by Von Allen. It’s the story of a teenage girl dealing with her mother’s serious mental illness but it’s not at all bleak. It’s filled with humor and hope. Allen also has a new series, Stargazer, an action adventure comic  in which three girls are transported by an alien artifact to a strange new world.

2. Hotwire from Radical Publishing. Alice Hotwire, Detective Exorcist. As Stan Lee used to say, ’nuff said.

3. Incorruptible and Irredeemable by Boom! Studios. The greatest hero of this world goes insane and becomes its greatest villain. The greatest villain sees the threat now posed by the former hero and vows to become a hero himself to even the odds. These two titles compliment each other perfectly.

From DC:

1. The New Frontier by Darwyn Cooke. This is my favorite superhero story of all time. It’s an alternate DC universe tale that shows the rise of superheroes in the 1950s, leading up to the hopeful New Frontier of the 1960s.

2. Batman: Year One & Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. Classics by Frank Miller, these stories tell the beginning and then the end of Batman’s career. Year One has the added bonus of superb art by David Mazzucchelli.

3. Trinity: Kurt Busiek sprawling series that features every DC superhero you’ve ever heard of and some that you probably haven’t. At the core is Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. Collected in three volumes.

4. Birds of Prey. My favorite series that features my favorite heroine, Black Canary, who’s gotten some exposure recently on Cartoon Network’s Batman: The Brave & the Bold. The first series has a number of trades. Look for either trades of original series by Chuck Dixon or Gail Simone’s run beginning with “Of Like Minds.”

From Viz:

1. A subscription to Shonen Jump would be a great present for pre-teen and teen boys.

2. Hyde & Closer. As my review earlier this year stated, it was hard for my eldest son to resist a manga starring a young boy and his cigar-chomping teddy bear. Not for very young children but great fun for older ones.

3. Library Wars. Books are now under the control of a stringent and secretive government agency. Librarians create a secret underground force to combat this tyranny. An action book with a female heroine, this would definitely appeal to geek girls.

From Marvel:

1. Agents of Atlas. Marvel revived a once-forgotten title with great flair. Who doesn’t want a title with a mysterious robot, a potential goddess, an Atlantean, a very strange mutated man, a fighting gorilla and the world’s greatest spy on the run from the government and hidden villains?

2. Spider-Girl. My eldest daughter’s favorite title as a pre-teen, it follows the adventures of MayDay Parker both in navigating high school and her work as a young superhero, not always with her father’s consent.

3. Guardians Of the Galaxy. Many of Marvel’s galactic heroes gather together to combat cosmic threats that can destroy the universe. And yet, there are some very human moments, even with a (hero?) named Drax the Destroyer.

Happy Holidays!

Sounds like @Cyanogen was cooking Gingerbread all night. Success at last!

I seem to recall I said something yesterday along the line of “Don’t be surprised if we see Gingerbread on some devices by the end of the day“.  It looks like I was a few hours out.  Cyanogen has apparently worked through the night and finally has Gingerbread running on his T-mobile G2.  It looks like his success happened at 3am this morning, as you can see from his tweet at that time.

By the end of the day yesterday, another teamdouche member by the name of Chris Soyars, had compile the Gingerbread AOSP source to work on the Google Nexus One and made the following post on his site:

I get the feeling that we are going to see Gingerbread available for download on many devices by the end of the weekend.  It sure would be awesome to have a beta version in the community that we can run on the Google Nexus One and T-Mobile myTouch 4G.  The community developers out there keep our Android experience alive with more updates than snow flakes on the ground outside my house.  Sooner or later the manufacturers, or Google themselves, are going to swoop down and grab some of this amazing talent and add them to their own Android team.  Maybe we’ll even see a CyanogenMOD based phone from a smaller manufacturer.  What about a special community driven edition of a phone from HTC or a Google developer phone.  Sooner or later these guys need to get some serious recognition for the amazing work they do.

Whatever happens, I’m eager to get my hands on a stable version of one of my favorite ROMs for the myTouch 4G; CyanogenMOD from treamdouch or TheOfficial from enomther.

Do you run the early releases on your device?

Google TV Getting an update at last, but nothing Significant

Google TV made a big buzz this year with it’s launch on Logitech and Sony devices and then came out with severely cut down features and was almost immediately ex-comunicated from most of the major online streaming sites and networks.  We are all waiting patiently for access to the Android Market to arrive so we start to really appreciate what this platform can do.  In the mean time, Google is releasing an update that will add some wizardry to existing apps and features, but won’t really improve our Google TV experience that much.  I really hope that there is ore to this update under the hood that we don’t know about.

So what are we getting and when?

According to Google’s Google TV blog we will be seeing some updates to the NetFlix application to allow searching, more dual view (picture-in-picture) versatility, the release of the Google TV remote control application for Android (already available in the market) and better searching functionality for movies.

As to when we are getting it, It’s supposed to be starting right now, but I haven’t heard of anyone who has received it yet.  I don’t even know if the update is controlled and pushed out by Google or if it comes through the manufacturers.

Here’s what Larry Yang, Google TV Product Manager had to say:

What’s new with Google TV?

It’s been two months since the first Google TV device went on sale. Since then, we have been hard at work thinking about how we can make the platform even better for our users. In fact, one of the greatest things about Google TV is that it comes with free, automatic “over-the-air” software updates that give you the newest features and content as we release them. It’s as if Google TV goes up in value over time.

Today we’re excited to start pushing out our first Google TV software update. In addition to fixing some bugs, there are four significant improvements to the platform:

Netflix

We’ve partnered up with our friends at Netflix to upgrade the app so that you can search, browse and watch any movie or show that is in the Netflix streaming catalog. You can even add these titles to your DVD queue if you want them mailed to you. Not sure what to watch? The new Netflix app will also give you personalized recommendations based on what you’ve watched before. Your TV is now an unlimited source of entertainment.

Dual View

Google TV brings the TV and web together in one seamless experience so you can easily watch your favorite TV show and browse your favorite website together at once. With the feature, you can do things like watch Conan while tweeting about him on Twitter at the same time. Since launch, we’ve had users give us feedback that they want even more customization options for this feature, and so today we have enhanced it to allow you to re-size and move the window however you’d like.

Standard capability New capability to move and re-size

Remote Control App for Android Phones

What if you could control your TV with the power of your voice? Starting today you can download the Google TV Remote app in Android Market. Apart from the standard TV remote options like changing channels or accessing your DVR, you can now interact with your TV in ways you never have before. For instance, try using the integrated voice search which allows you to find your favorite shows and movies just by speaking into your phone. Or, go from small screen to big screen by sharing videos and websites directly from your phone to your TV. We’ve included a short preview of these features below. Stay tuned for more information about the Google TV Remote for other platforms in the near future.

Movies

Say you’re searching for a movie like ‘Harry Potter’. Google TV now has a movie results page that shows you all films associated with the title so you can quickly watch what you want, wherever it’s available — ranging from sources like live TV, Netflix, and Amazon Video on Demand. You can also read a quick summary, see photos, and find the cast list. Click on the name of a cast member and we’ll take you to a new search landing page where you can find other movies featuring that actor. Trust us, you’ll never leave the couch again.

Google TV users will start to see these updates roll out to their devices throughout the week. The Google TV Remote app is available today (click here from your Android device or scan the barcode below) but all features may not work until your device has received the update.

Scan from your Android phone

We are continuously listening to feedback and are excited to bring you more Google TV updates in the future. Please leave your feedback in the comments, on Twitter, or on our Facebook page. Don’t have a Google TV device yet? Submit a video telling us why you should receive one and you might just end up with a 46” HDTV to kick off the new year right. Happy Holidays from Google TV!

So there you have it, some minor updates to Google TV to keep us happy for a little while longer, but nothing life changing.

50% of Smartphones Sold Last Quarter in China Running Android

Chinese consumers purchased 8 to 10 million smartphones last quarter, up from an estimated 2 to 3 million in the same period last year. And according to Morgan Keegan analyst, Tavis McCourt, the bulk of them ran Android.

Digital Daily tells us that throughout 2010, the Chinese mobile market was led by Symbian and Windows Mobile, but it seems that has changed, and looking into 2011, Android has secured a huge spot in their market.

Oddly enough, in 2009, there were zero Android phones sold in China, and now, fifty percent of smartphones sold are running our little green friend’s OS.

The site also mentions that with the release of the iPhone 4, there may be an increase in Apple sales in China, but prior to Wi-Fi capable 3Gs or the iPhone 4, the Chinese didn’t take too well to it.

What do you think?  Any of our readers in China sporting an Android?

RIM sponsors BBM Lounge 3.0 last week in LA

Mark Salling

The BBM Lounge was in full swing last week when Xomad hosted Mark Salling’s record release party in LA. Mark plays Puck on Glee and I’m pretty jealous I didn’t get to attend the BlackBerry sponsored event, as I am a huge Glee fan, and obviously love my BlackBerry. The night was packed with music, food, and fun as Mark Salling performed songs from his debut album Pipe Dreams and guests used their BlackBerry smartphones to order hors d’oeuvres and themed cocktails like the BlackBerry Lemonade. Everyone knows BlackBerry batteries never last as long as you want or need them to, so if you were in attendance and your battery was running low, you could scan a barcode and a BBMe concierge would deliver you a fresh one. I need that in my daily life!

Judging by the pictures, it looks like everyone had a great time at The BBM Lounge 3.0.  And seriously, how cool to attend a party where having your BlackBerry out all night isn’t frowned upon, but instead encouraged! BlackBerry Messenger is one of the best features of BlackBerry, in my opinion, and events like this truly showcase how much functionality and potention BBM has.

There were a ton of celebrity attendees as well and you can check out the full list and more pictures after the jump.

This Could Be Your Last Night on Earth

Last Night on Earth

Sheriff Anderson and Jake the drifter prepare to take on some zombies. Photo: Jonathan Liu

Overview: The small town of Woodinvale has a bit of a problem: the shambling undead. Last Night on Earth pits zombies versus four heroes in a number of different scenarios in a board game that plays out like a horror movie. (There’s even a soundtrack included to help you set the mood.) With a number of excellent expansions, LNoE is hands-down the best zombie board game available.

Players: 2 to 6 players (I recommend 5 max—see “Gameplay” below)

Ages: 12 and up, largely because of the horror themes

Playing Time: 60 to 90 minutes

Retail: $49.95 for base game, expansion set prices vary

Rating: Mnnrraaaaaaaaarrrgh! (That’s zombie-speak for “awesome.”)

Who Will Like It? If you like zombies, zombie movies, board games, little plastic figurines and dice, you’ll dig Last Night on Earth.

Last Night on Earth box

Boxed sets: Last Night on Earth base game and Growing Hunger expansion

I’ll just warn you here—I like this game a lot, so I’m rather long-winded about it. So here’s the short version: If you like zombies, you’ll probably like it too.

Theme:

Flying Frog Productions is, as art director and co-founder Scott Hill told me, a bunch of people who love horror movies. So they hired actors, applied make up, made props and sets, got out the fog machines—and made a board game. Instead of illustrations, the images in LNoE are all photographs, and you can tell that these folks know their zombie tropes and are having a lot of fun with them. From the characters to the event cards to the different scenarios, everything about the game helps you feel like you’re in a zombie movie, whether you’re playing the part of the heroes or the zombies.

There are Hero Cards and Zombie Cards, with fantastic photography and often little quotes to help set the scene. The scenarios range from the basic “Die, Zombies Die!” (kill 15 zombies before sundown) to “Escape in the Truck” (find the gasoline and keys, and make it back to the truck alive), and each one puts you right in the middle of the action.

Of all the games I own, LNoE has one of the strongest themes—while you’re playing you really feel like you’re there. That’s not to say the gameplay is better than everything else, but when you’re playing Carcassonne (which is a fantastic game) you don’t necessarily feel like you’re actually knights and robbers and monks. LNoE draws you in unlike most other games I’ve played.

Components:

You get a whole lot of stuff with the base game: 14 plastic zombies and 8 heroes, a modular gameboard (6 L-shaped boards and a center piece), 120 cards (Zombie Cards and Hero Cards, divided into basic and advanced versions), 16 dice, a soundtrack, 8 cardboard Character cards, 5 cardboard Game Scenario cards, and a huge pile of cardboard counters and tokens.

Jenny the Farmer's DaughterThe quality of the components is pretty good—the heavy character cards are very sturdy and all the tokens and board pieces are made of the same hefty stock. The cards are plastic-coated which makes them pretty durable but they have a tendency to stick to each other and are a bit hard to shuffle. One of the great things about the game is that they threw in a lot of extras even in the base game: a lot of the counters and tokens aren’t even for specific expansions, but they’re included so you can make your own scenarios or use them in new scenarios that Flying Frog releases on their website.

The soundtrack CD is a fun touch—it’s instrumental and can be played as background music. My only complaint there was that it’s too short for the game, lasting about half an hour. They do have a Special Edition soundtrack which is longer and comes with two exclusive cards, but I only found out about that recently.

Gameplay:

With the modular game boards, various scenarios to choose from, and a random draw of four heroes, there’s a lot of variability to make each game a little different. I should note that the game includes six of the L-shaped corner boards but you only use four each time so that’s an additional source of variety.

There are always four heroes, so you can have one, two or four people playing the heroes. You’ll need one or two people controlling the zombies, too, so you can get between two and six people playing depending on how you divide them up. However, I’ve found that the zombie players don’t really have as much strategizing to do so my gaming group really prefers to have just one zombie player against the heroes.

Each scenario has a set number of rounds, marked by a sun tracker, and different goals for each team. Zombies automatically win if they’ve killed four Heroes or discarded the last card in the Hero Deck, in addition to whatever the scenario goal is.

Once everything is set up and everyone is in place, the two teams take turns. Zombies draw new cards if necessary, roll to see if they’ll get to spawn more at the end of the turn, and then move. These are your old-school, shambling zombies and not the speedy sort, so each zombie only moves one space unless special cards come into play. In addition, because of their insatiable zombie hunger, if they’re within one space of Heroes they must move towards them. Any zombies that end up sharing a space with Heroes then fight, which is resolved through die rolls (and any cards that either team can play during the fight).

Jake the drifterDuring the Hero turn, all four heroes will get to take their actions in any order. You roll a d6 to move, but you can also give up moving in order to search a building if you’re in one, which lets you draw a card from the deck. Some buildings also have special rules for picking out specific cards from the discard pile, which is handy. After moving (or searching), you can also exchange items with other Heroes in the same space, shoot ranged weapons like pistols and shotguns. And then, if there are any zombies left in your space, you fight them.

There is a lot of die-rolling involved, so gamers who don’t like those might be a little disappointed. Still, there are enough cards that modify die rolls, allow you to re-roll, or even cancel events entirely so you can still work in some strategy. And of course, everyone knows that surviving a zombie apocalypse isn’t something you can come up with a perfect strategy for—there’s always that element of luck, right?

That’s basically it. Heroes can usually take two or three wounds before they die, and there are first aid kits and other ways to heal. Zombies are usually just fended off on a successful die roll, and only killed if you roll doubles (or use a weapon against them). Each of the Heroes also has special abilities that come into play, so making the most of your team’s abilities is important for the Heroes.

If you want to see the entire rulebook for yourself, you can check out the Flying Frog Wiki (which also has info about all the other characters, as well as descriptions of all the cards).

The game takes about an hour to play (sometimes up to 2 hours, depending on how quickly players make their decisions), and it’s usually a pretty good balance between the humans and the zombies, which makes for a great game and increases the sense that you’re in a zombie movie. In most games I’ve played, the Heroes just barely scrape out a victory, or are defeated by a narrow margin.

Lights Out

Conclusion:

When I was still getting started with my board game collection, I was debating between a couple of zombie-themed board games. The fine folks at Tabletop Game and Hobby (I was visiting Kansas City at the time) pointed me toward LNoE, one that I’d seen on the shelves but hadn’t ever played. I was a little hesitant about shelling out fifty bucks for a game I hadn’t ever seen in action, but I decided to take a chance on it.

Since then, LNoE has become one of my game night standards. We don’t play it every time, but it hits the table pretty often if I don’t have other games in the queue to review. Not everyone likes it (in particular, some people just don’t like cooperative games so they’ll only play as the lone zombie player) but it’s been a hit for many of my regulars.

I ended up buying the Growing Hunger expansion set, which adds more heroes, more L-shaped boards, double-handed weapons for the Heroes, more zombies and new rules for Plague Carriers and Grave Dead zombies, and a whole lot more cards. We added it to the set and have enjoyed the additions.

On a more recent trip I purchased the Survival of the Fittest expansion, which doesn’t add any more heroes but gives you more cards and some new techniques for both teams. Heroes can now barricade walls and doors to slow down Zombies. Zombies can now use Grave Weapons to increase their attacks. Sadly, I haven’t gotten a chance to play this one yet because I haven’t had as many game nights lately but I’m excited about trying it out.

I was thrilled to see Flying Frog at PAX Prime this year and finally get to meet them, especially with the news about their brand-new Invasion from Outer Space. It uses the same game engine and modular boards, but features a Martian invasion—and you can even combine the games for a massive humans vs. zombies vs. Martians free-for-all. Watch for a review of IfOS soon!

All in all, I’ve been quite satisfied with LNoE and the expansions. It’s quite different from my usual fare which tends to be heavy on European resource-management games, but it’s great for when you’re in the mood to fight some zombies (or eat some brains).

Wired: A great cast of characters, all the usual weapons (and some unusual ones), and a lot of variety—randomized board setups, hero choices, and scenarios make for a very replayable game.

Tired: Sometimes the dice just don’t like you. The Zombie team has fewer options strategically. (But that makes sense, right? Zombies aren’t known for their intellectual prowess.)

Check out the Flying Frog web store, which has additional exclusive items like the green Radioactive Zombies. You can pick up the boxed game and expansions from your local retailer or Amazon.

Geek Bending With Avatar: The Last Airbender

Photo: Viacom International

“I’m gonna be Aang for Halloween!” That’s music to this GeekMom’s ears, and not just because the costume is as simple as greasepainting a blue arrow on my preschooler’s shaved head. No, I’m delighted because my son picked a first-rate cartoon role model. It’s true that he’s a little younger than the target audience for Avatar: The Last Airbender, but little kids can’t help looking up to big kids, and I’ve seen no better kids on television than Team Avatar.

Did You Get Your R2D2 Droid 2 Last Night? [Poll]

This image has no alt text

Last night marked the arguably geeky launch of the R2D2 special edition of the Motorola Droid 2. Verizon stores across the country held launch parties leading up to a midnight launch of the phone where there were cosplay contests, fun and games, and more. We didn’t get a chance to get out to any of the launch locations, but I’m sure some of you have. Did you go out at midnight to get this phone? If so, what was it like and what did your particular location do? How many people showed up? If you didn’t get the phone at midnight, will you be getting it at all? Let your voice be heard in the poll and comments section below!

Texts from Last Night App Delights in Debauchery, and Lets Users Vote

texts from last night iphone appIf you’re of a certain age—read: you’re a college student—you likely already know all about Texts From Last Night, or TFLN for short. TFLN is a Webby Award-winning website, a popular Facebook group, a book, a soon-to-be TV series on the Fox network, and, now, an iPhone app.

The basics of the iPhone app are just like those of the full-featured website: Texts From Last Night is a stream of user-submitted text messages from, you guessed it, last night. Users may submit their own text message to the stream, and the texts are up-voted or down-voted by other users, Reddit style. The most popular part of the app/website is probably the “Top Nights” feature, which is a collection of the most up-voted texts, organized by day, week, month, or all time.

So, why should you care about anonymous, out-of-context, possibly made-up text messages? Bluntly, you should care because they are hilarious. These aren’t just any texts, but only the most debauched and embarrassing. The best entries are like short stories that imply the existence of entire worlds of filthy humor and regret, outside of the 160-character limit of the message. Texts From Last Night is like a Twitter feed from a teen sex comedy. Read the full story

Last of the Broadband Grants

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced the funding of 43 new broadband infrastructure projects in 27 states. Here’s the list (pdf).

Meanwhile, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) also announced 35 new awards totaling $482 million — most of them “middle mile” connectivity projects.

Overall, the federal Recovery Act was to invest $7.2 billion in expanding broadband access nationwide – $4.7 billion through NTIA and $2.5 billion funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utilities Service (RUS). RUS has posted a Round 2 Application Directory while the NTIA has a searchable database.

NTIA will make all BTOP awards by September 30, 2010, and has thus far announced 216 grants.

By leveraging $2.5 billion in Recovery Act funding authorized by Congress, USDA has been able to provide loans and grants of $3.6 billion to construct 307 broadband projects in 46 states and one territory.

Funding is contingent upon the recipient meeting the terms of the loan, grant or loan/grant agreement.

President Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to expand access to and adoption of broadband services. into law on Feb. 17, 2009. The Act includes measures to modernize our nation’s infrastructure, enhance energy independence, expand educational opportunities, preserve and improve affordable health care, provide tax relief, and protect those in greatest need.

At Last, HDR Comes to Video?

Still from Soviet Montage's HDR video

Still from Soviet Montage's HDR video

Finally a better use for two cameras than producing 3D movies. You may have heard of HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography before, but if you haven’t, it’s basically a technique that combines two or more photos of the same scene, taken with different exposures. An overexposed shot brings out the shadows and an underexposed shot leaves some detail in the highlights. The shots are combined in software to produce the final image, which can often look slightly unreal.

The technique has been around for a few years now, at first for the pros only, but then you could get “an app for that“, and now the latest version of the iPhone 4’s operating system bakes the HDR shooting right into the camera software, so it won’t be long before it’s everywhere.

Now a company called Soviet Montage Productions has developed a way of producing the HDR effect for video. They use a custom built rig including a beam splitter to send the video image to two Canon 5D Mark II DSLR cameras, one underexposing by -2e/v and the other overexposing by 2e/v, and the resulting videos are combined in post production to give the slightly erie effect shown in the video below.

There’s a great debate going on in the comments of their site as to the merits of the technique, but we’ll leave you to make up your own mind on that.
