Another Awesome Trailer Mashup: Scott Pilgrim: The Last Airbender

No, it doesn’t use footage from the movie The Last Airbender (although, really, almost any change to that film would be an improvement). This uses the audio from a Scott Pilgrim vs. The World trailer with video from the Avatar: The Last Airbender cartoon. And it is brilliant.

Hat-tip: @edgarwright.

It seems as soon as you purchase your new phone, the next day the price comes down even lower. The T-Mobile Samsung Vibrant is now reduced even further on Wirefly to a mere $99.  If you haven’t purchased one of these amazing devices yet, you need to head over to the Wirefly store and pick one up while they are only $99.  I think wirefly are trying to take over the cell phone market by storm.  first we had FREE Android devices and then the latest and greatest device form T-mobile drops down to  this incredible price.

BlindType Looks to be the Last Keyboard Anyone Will Ever Need… Ever

This image has no alt text

Dear Swype,

After watching this promotional video of BlindType – another alternate keyboard making its way to Android – I think I can safely say I’m not that into you anymore. It’s not you, it’s me. Your cunning ability to let me draw while I type and still get some words onto the screen is still amazing, but I think you might have just been outdone. Just a tiny bit.

Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, I’ll say that I won’t be surprised to learn you guys have said the same thing. BlindType looks awesome in every way, shape, and form. With their keyboard, text prediction is so accurate that – in some cases – you could type with your eyes closed. They even have a mode where you can turn the keyboard invisible and type on an empty canvas. That’s just stunning. Another feature that I love about the keyboard is that it will auto adjust its size and orientation based on how you’re typing. If it notices you’re way off, it’ll line itself up for you. Even at the smallest of sizes, the keyboard seems to be extremely accurate.

blindtype

There’s not much more to say here, because the video speaks wonders for itself. The version pictured is for the iPhone, but BlindType’s announced they’re working on an Android version as well. What more can I say? Go on over to their website if you want to learn more.

Last Nexus One Shipment Arrives At Google

Sine Google announced plans to cease the sale of their flagship Android handset the Nexus One through their online store, we have all stood by waiting for the plug to finally be pulled. Sadly, the time has now come as Google received their final shipment of Nexus One phones from HTC this week. Once this stock is sold off, the N1 will be no more in the Google web store.

nexus-one-full

The phone itself will not cease to be available, however, as carrier partners will continue to offer the sexy Nexy for the foreseeable future. A note is even made that Nexus One distribtuion may still spread to other carriers depending on “local market conditions.” Google will continue to offer the N1 to developer’s through a tertiary sales partner. The full text of the blog post announcing the end of the Nexus One’s availability online follows:

Earlier this year, we announced that we will be closing the Nexus One web store. This week we received our last shipment of Nexus One phones. Once we sell these devices, the Nexus One will no longer be available online from Google. Customer support will still be available for current Nexus One customers. And Nexus One will continue to be sold by partners including Vodafone in Europe, KT in Korea, and possibly others based on local market conditions.

To ensure our developers have access to a phone with the latest Android OS, Google will be offering the Nexus One through a partner for sale to registered developers. Visit the Android Market Publisher site and log into your developer account to purchase a Nexus One.

If you still want to get your hands on the unlocked version of the phone that never quite made the sweeping changes to the handset market it intended to, head over to the Google web store quickly as we’re sure the remaining stock may not last long. For now we shed a single tear as the phone that could have changed everything inches one step closer to the end of its life.

Latest HTC Sync Update for Aria Allows You to Install Non-Market APKs, May Not Last

This image has no alt text

In a move that I’m sure many HTC Aria fans will go crazy over, HTC’s updated HTC Sync to allow users of the device to install third-party .APK files. We delayed reporting on this story because HTC claims that the update’s description was written in err, but Engadget’s debunked HTC’s debunking and it is – in fact – true.

HTC_Aria_4

It’s pretty funny considering AT&T made it a point on their site to explain why they didn’t allow users of their devices to install applications from sources other than the Android market. Considering HTC was so quick to correct themselves on the first error and alerted Engadget about the mistake it might not be long before we see the file updated without side-loading support for the Aria.

Until then (if it’s ever bound to happen, that is), you might want to go and download it from their site while the getting is still good (and keep your eyes peeled if it’s already too late: the internet has a convenient tendency to upload forbidden files at tons of different sites to ensure they are never lost).

10 Things Parents Should Know About The Last Airbender

Photo © Paramount Pictures

1. Will my kids like it?

This will depend greatly on their age and familiarity with the anime series. Younger kids are much more tolerant of bad acting and plot holes, especially if they know the story to start with. Expect a lot of comments about differences between the movie and TV series, and complaints about the pronunciation of names.

My ten year old geeklet enjoyed the movie, but had a lot of complaints. He noted that the actors didn’t seem to believe the story and that the holes in the storyline would leave any non-fans in the dark.

2. Will I like it?

I don’t think so, but a quick survey of Twitter indicates that some people loved it. Coincidentally, most of them also thought the latest Twilight movie was great…

3. When’s the best time for a bathroom break?

Anytime, really, but if you can’t sit through the whole movie, take a break around 30 or 50 minutes.

4. Is it worth paying more for 3D? How about IMAX?

We saw it in 2D because of the 3D reviews, so I’m only repeating what I’ve read. Do not pay extra. The Last Airbender was filmed in 2D with the 3D added as an after-thought. Roger Ebert describes the 3D version as: “You know something is wrong when the screen is filled with flames that have the vibrancy of faded Polaroids. It’s a known fact that 3D causes a measurable decrease in perceived brightness, but ‘Airbender’ looks like it was filmed with a dirty sheet over the lens.”

5. Any good previews?

Rango and Megamind. Both look like they might be fun.

6. Will I want to see it again?

Nope. I won’t even buy the DVD. There is nothing in this movie worth seeing again. Unlike really good movies with fine details, interesting side plots and subtle nuances that make viewing again interesting, The Last Airbender was shallow, one dimensional, and frequently boring.

7. Is it loud or scary?

A few scenes are loud, but not overly so. The actions scenes may be scary to the youngest geeklets. My son was not startled by any scenes, and only slightly anxious over the fight scenes.

8. How are the special effects?

The special effects are without a doubt the best part of the movie. Unfortunately that isn’t saying much. They did get better throughout the movie, but continued to lack the brilliance and color that they showed in the anime series. I realize I’m comparing animation to rendered “live” action, but I think they could have brightened things up.

9. What about the race issues?

While I hope that M. Night isn’t racist, I can’t help but think he was pressured to use Caucasian actors for the “good” roles. It is discussed in much more detail here: “One Kid’s Take on “The Last Airbender’s” Casting Fail” here: ”Got Last Airbender Issues? Ask M. Night Shyamalan” and here: “RaceBending.com

10. What were the differences between the series and movie?

I can’t say too much for fear of spoiling it, but to me it felt like they tossed each scene into a hat and drew out 103 minutes worth. Everything from the series that played a part in character and relationship development was missing from the movie.

Wired: The final battle, although different from the anime series, was good.

Nokia N8 to be last Symbian-powered Nseries, MeeGo moving forward

Nokia N8 to be last Symbian-powered Nseries, MeeGo moving forwardThere has been a lot of people writing in the press that the N8 is the end of Symbian and other such nonsense. Last Fall Nokia made it clear that future high end devices were going to be powered by Maemo (now MeeGo) so the fact that the Nseries lines is going this way is clearly no surprise to anyone. I think people may be a bit disappointed that the upcoming N8, that hasn’t even been released yet, has a visible end of life. As someone who bought and enjoys using the Nokia N900, I am a bit hesitant to get the N8 since if looks to be following the same pattern. Then again, I switch phones so often that this shouldn’t really matter. Others though do not switch this much and thanks to webOS, Android, and the iPhone people have come to expect their smartphones to be upgradeable for at least the 2 year contract cycle. We have not seen any news that the N8 will be upgradeable to MeeGo so this concerns people who were considering paying for this new flagship device.

We also have not seen much in the way of what MeeGo really means and I am not completely sold that Nokia is all in with this either. Nokia has changed their mind and it seems tough to sell to developers what the path forward is with changes and inconsistencies in your strategy. Rafe assembled an excellent article over on All About Maemo that lays it all out.
