Iridium Launches Hotspot

Pioneer satphone company Iridium, with a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites, today announced its vision for the future of private mobile satellite communications, Iridium Force and a modest satellite-connected WiFi hotspot that smartphones and tablet computers can connect to.

The Iridium AxcessPoint can present Wi-Fi enabled smartphones, tablets and laptops everywhere via the Iridium network utilizing Extreme or Iridium 9555 satellite telephone. The AxcessPoint will cost less than $ 200, but it wants to be paired with a phone that costs about $ 1,000. The information connection will expense about $ 1 per minute.

Iridium charges data calls by the minute and at voice rates, which will be somewhere between $ .65 to $ 1.30, depending your program or pre-paid package. At a maximum bandwidth supplied by Iridium, 9.6 kbps, each and every MB will take about 14 minutes to download and price somewhere between $ 9 and $ 18 in connection fees.

Iridium Force is the firm’s thrust in opening and licensing their technologies to collaborate with an expanding set of innovators, generating new solutions for a wide range of markets (pdf).

Iridium is integrating GPS location-based services for on-the-go location-distinct applications and personal security capabilities. Iridium NEXT, anticipated to begin service in 2015, will sustain the existing Iridium constellation architecture of 66 cross-linked satellite low-Earth orbiting (LEO) covering 100 percent of the globe.

The Iridium network of 66 satellites spans the world. Their LEO competitor, Globalstar has had a key malfuntion with their voice transponders, and at present only offers reliable one-way data services. Globalstar has presently launched 12 second-generation Globalstar satellites.

Globalstar plans to integrate the 24 new second-generation satellites with the eight very first-generation satellites that had been launched in 2007, to form a 32 satellite constellation. As soon as their new constellation is launched and totally deployed, the Company expects to, once once more, provide two-way voice and data services.

AT&T was promoting their Genus smartphone in conjunction with the bankrupt TerraStar satellite service (recently bought by The Dish network) and their terrestrial cellular network.

However, TerraStar’s spotbeam geosynchronous satellite covers only North America. TerreStar’s footprint covers 330 million folks throughout the United States and Canada. TerreStar-1 has an antenna roughly 60 feet across that enables it to communicate with wireless devices the size of typical cell phones.

Sprint BlackBerry Bold 9930 non-camera version launches on September 9th

BlackBerry Bold 9930 non-camera version launches on Sprint September 9th

Even though Verizon has had a non-camera version accessible given that launch, Sprint will now be releasing their non-camera version of the BlackBerry Bold 9930 on September 9th. While many folks can make use of the camera equipped versions, there is nonetheless somewhat of a demand in the enterprise sector for devices without cameras. Some employers just do not permit the use of camera equipped phones. Fewer and fewer device manufacturers are catering to this user base, rather relying on computer software locks and IT policies to block camera access. RIM could do that as nicely by means of the BES infrastructure but it is still nice to see separate devices getting made available.

Personally, if I by no means employed the camera on my device — I believe I’d opt for a non-camera version just for the cleaner appearance of it. No cost distinction is found in between the two versions but if you’re in need of a non-camera equipped BlackBerry and Sprint is your carrier you can get the BlackBerry Bold 9930 for $ 249 from Sprint beginning September 9th.

Rogers Launches Canadian LTE Service

Rogers Communications announced today the commercial launch of Canada’s first Long Term Evolution network, bringing LTE service to the Ottawa region. Rogers also announced that network rollout to Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal will occur this fall, and that LTE-enabled smartphones from Samsung and HTC will be available later this year.

Rogers LTE will expand LTE to an additional 21 markets by the end of 2012, the company says. Rogers and Ericsson began conducting comprehensive technical trials of LTE in Ottawa and Montreal last fall.

The company announced back in April that it would be using Ericsson’s RBS 6000 base stations for LTE. Rogers is using AWS frequencies (1.7/2.1 GHz) for LTE service. Canadian carriers bought 105 MHz of AWS spectrum in their 2008 auction. Most of that spectrum hasn’t been deployed yet.

The Rogers LTE Rocket USB Stick, at launch, is priced at $ 169.99, or $ 79.99 on a three-year term.

The company claims typical download speeds from 12 Mbps to 25 Mbps. Service is available on Rogers’s Flex Plan, starting at $ 45 per month for 1.5GB, 3GB of usage for $ 60, 6GB of usage for $ 75, and 9GB of usage for $ 90. There’s a $ 10 penalty for every gigabyte beyond the caps.

Three national wireless carriers (Rogers: 8.9m, Bell Mobility: 7.1m, and Telus Mobility: 6.9 million subs), collectively account for around 94% of Canada’s wireless market, but six regional providers keep them on their toes. Canada is one of the six most competitive wireless market structures in the OECD (pdf).

Roger beat competitors Bell Mobility and Telus to the LTE punch, says IT World Canada. Telus, the 3rd largest carrier, announced in April it would launch its LTE network in 2012. Bell Mobility is also testing LTE in the Montreal and Hamilton areas, but has made no announcement about commercial availability. Meanwhile, cable provider Shaw Communications is scheduled to start a wireless service in Western Canada next year.

Rogers also owns 2.5 GHz spectrum similar to those used by Clearwire in the U.S. and uses those frequencies for fixed WiMAX.

According to TeleGeography, Rogers can begin using that 2.5 GHz spectrum for mobile broadband this year via its national joint venture with Bell and Inukshuk Wireless. That pre-WiMAX network is currently available in 200 areas across Canada.

Rogers, Telus, Bell and their newer cellular rivals are also aiming to win 700MHz spectrum in an upcoming frequency auction after Canada’s switchover to digital TV by August this year. But the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission may lock out the big three carriers from bidding on the 700 MHz band to encourage new competition.

Wireless carriers in Canada include Rogers Wireless, Bell Mobility, Virgin Mobile Canada, TELUS Mobility, SaskTel Mobility, Manitoba Telecom Services, Globalive’s Wind Mobile, Mobilicity, Public Mobile, Vidotron Wireless, and Shaw Communications.

T-Mobile UK Officially Launches HTC Sensation

The HTC Sensation was launched by T-Mobile USA last month and it’s currently their new flagship device. It was also launched by Bell and Virgin Mobile in Canada, and 3UK launched it in the UK. T-Mobile UK is ready to join 3UK and are offering this amazing HTC device for free on a 2-yr contract, starting from a monthly rate of £40. It’s a little more expensive than 3UK’s rate, but you get 1,200 minutes, 500 texts, and unlimited data. All in all, it seems like a pretty good deal. T-Mobile UK’s most expensive plan is £56.17 and will gives you unlimited minutes, 500 texts, and unlimited data. Their cheapest plan rings in at £10.21, but requires you to pay a £360 contract fee.

The Sensation isn’t a bad device and is really a tough competitor for Samsung Galaxy S II. If, for some reason, you aren’t into the Galaxy S II, then I am sure the Sensation will impress you. Both devices are among the best Android smartphones available on the market.

So is anyone looking forward to buying the Sensation from T-Mobile UK?

Towerstream Launches Wholesale MuniFi

Towerstream a 4G service provider, that typically provides enterprise backhaul, today announced plans to build out wholesale hotzones throughout New York City as well as other key markets including San Francisco and Chicago in 2011.

Over the past year, Towerstream has deployed a pilot Wi-Fi network in Midtown Manhattan. Towerstream says it has completed millions of connections to its Wi-Fi hotzones, primarily from handsets.

Towerstream installs Ruckus WiFi nodes in busy stops, including Grand Central Terminal and Times Square, using their own backhaul installed on nearby tall buildings. Towersteam then leases the network to wireless carriers like Verizon. Using Ruckus beamforming gear, Towerstream says it provides up to 200 mbps of available bandwidth per location.

Towersteam uses a Ruckus outdoor Smart-Sector mesh access point (ZoneFlex 7762-S), a point-to-multipoint wireless backhaul bridge (ZoneFlex 7731), indoor/outdoor customer premises equipment (MediaFlex 7200), and system-wide remote Wi-Fi management (FlexMaster 9.0) to manage hundreds of thousands of Wi-Fi clients.

AT&T Mobility announced its own hotzone thrust, expanding its WiFi hotzones into more areas of Chicago, New York and San Francisco to offload heavy 3G traffic.

AT&T operates hot spots in hotels, airports, Starbucks coffee shops and other indoor locations. AT&T’s new “hot zones” cover public, outdoor spaces and provide fast data service for AT&T subscribers.

“The success of our pilot network of hotzones in New York City underscores the demand for high-capacity Wi-Fi networks, and we are excited to expand Towerstream Wi-Fi hotzones to additional key markets throughout the country,” said Towerstream CEO Jeff Thompson.

Founded in 2000, Towerstream has established networks in 11 markets including New York City, Boston, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, the San Francisco Bay area, Miami, Seattle, Dallas-Fort Worth, Nashville and the greater Providence area where the Company is based.

Eutelsat Launches Ka Band Internet Satellite

A European Ka-band internet satellite was successfully launched on Sunday. The Eutelsat-operated spacecraft, Ka-Sat, will concentrate its services on the estimated tens of millions of European homes in so-called “not-spots”, where consumers cannot get a decent terrestrial connection.

The spacecraft follows the Hylas-1 platform into orbit. That satellite, operated by Avanti Communications of London, was launched just last month.

Ka-Sat, however, is considerably bigger, and has a notional capacity to serve up to two million households compared with Hylas’s 300,000, reports the BBC.

“As many as 30 million households in Europe are not served at all or get high mediocrity of service,” said Eutelsat CEO Michel de Rosen. “These could be people in the countryside or in the mountains, sometimes not very far from large cities. Ka-Sat is an answer to that problem,” he told BBC News.

Paris-based Eutelsat is one of the world’s big three Fixed Satellite Services (FSS) companies, along with SES and Intelsat, and transmits thousands of TV channels across its fleet of spacecraft.

Ka-Sat is its first broadband-dedicated satellite. Each spotbeam delivers a total capacity of 900 Mbps, shared between the forward and return paths. It will be positioned at nine degrees east and has a total throughput of some 70Gbps. Some 82 spot beams will deliver internet service to different market areas stretching from North Africa to southern Scandinavia. A very small segment of the Middle East will also be reached.

Eutelsat has signed about 70 deals with distributors across the satellite’s “footprint”, and more would be signed over the next year. Ka-Sat is expected to be operational in the second half of the second quarter of 2011. It will join three large HOT BIRD Kuband broadcasting satellites that form the world’s leading video neighbourhood.

The ground network will use ViaSat’s SurfBeam technology, similar to the solution already powering broadband connectivity for almost 450,000 satellite homes in North America.

In the United States, WildBlue currently delivers satellite internet access to nearly 400,000 customers. It is accessible to virtually every home and small business in the contiguous U.S., including the estimated 20-25 million homes and small offices that are not wired for terrestrial (DSL or cable modem) service. Wildblue was acquired by ViaSat last year.

ViaSat-1, a sister satellite to KaSat, is expected to have more capacity than the combination of all other satellites in operation over the United States, providing 2-10 Mbps download speeds at retail prices competitive with terrestrial services, says the company. ViaSat-1 is scheduled for launch in the first half of 2011.

There are at least 3 billion people on the planet who have no affordable way to connect to the Internet–a problem Google aims to solve by helping foot the bill for the launch of 16 satellites in the O3B constellation.

The O3B satellite network (“O3B” stands for “the other 3 billion”) is set for launch in 2011. An ISP would install a pair of high-tech antennas capable of tracking multiple satellites and establish a 155-megabit per-second connection to the global Web. ISPs could use 3G cellular and WiMax towers for local connections. Each satellite in the network will have 10 spot beams, each delivering in excess of 1Gbit/s.

In other space news, Google recently sent seven payloads into near space on balloons, each equipped with a Nexus S phones. Sending the balloons up also allowed them to capture some stunning imagery and videos of Earth. Take a look at unaltered footage of an Android at over 100,000 ft above the Earth’s surface.

The payloads collected a lot of data, and many reached high altitudes, with the highest topping out at 107,375 ft., over 20 miles high, or over three times the height of an average commercial jet. In tracking the sensors on each of the phones, we observed that the GPS in Nexus S could function up to altitudes of about 60,000 ft. and would actually start working again on the balloon’s descent.

Google Launches New HTML5 Version of Gmail only for Arabic Phones

Google recently launched a new HTML5 Version of Gmail that runs in the browser. This would seem convenient, except for one simple issue: the web page is only viewable if your entire phone is in Arabic. Recently, Google announced that Gmail’s new HTML5  web interface runs a user interface entirely in Arabic. Also, the HTML5 web page is not for everyone, as it only works for phones or tablets running the Android OS version 2.2.1 or higher with Arabic as their default language.

TalkAndroid.com has tried to get a glimpse of it. However, Google does not set their settings based off of Gmail, but the phone itself. It seems that the only way to check it out is to flash an Arabic ROM to your phone and then take advantage of the new 44 language support by Google.

Cox Launches Cell Service

Cox Communications, the fifth largest cable operator in the United States, is launching its own cellular service, initially in Hampton Roads, Va., Omaha, Neb., and Orange County, Calif. Cox Wireless will be available to all 1.5 million subscribers Cox has there.

Cox is leasing access on Sprint’s national 3G CDMA network, but is supporting wireless customers via its own core network and systems.

Cox is using Sprint for nationwide 3G service, but the company has spent more than $550 million for its own spectrum licenses in the 700 MHz spectrum in the 2008 auction. In addition, Cox bought spectrum in the 2006 Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) auction. The company said that it eventually plans to move up to 4G LTE technology, probably using its own spectrum.

Cox wireless pricing is competitive: $39.99 per month buys 450 voice minutes while $99.99 each month gains unlimited talk, text and web use. Individual data plans are $30 a month for unlimited data to smartphones while $60 each month buys 5 GB of service for a mobile broadband modem.

A key differentiator is the $5 to $20 monthly credit for unused minutes on the limited plans.

Cox is offering both feature phones and smartphones, such as the Motorola Milestone and HTC Desire, two Android devices that launched within the past year.

Handsets include smartphones and lower cost feature phones such as:

  • HTC Desire. An Android enabled touch smartphone with WiFi, 1 GHz processing speeds and HTC SenseTM interface
  • Motorola Milestone. an Android enabled smartphone with WiFi, Qwerty slider keyboard, advanced processor with 3G speed, 3.7-inch screen and 5-megapixel camera
  • LG Axis. An Android enabled smartphone with 3.2” (480x 800) touchscreen and slide out QWERTY keyboard, Wi-Fi and 3.0 MP camera which support panoramic shots

Early termination fees decrease by 1/24 each month, unlike other carriers. Cox will also send a free text if customers approach 95 percent of their monthly minutes or messages.

Cox’s wireless service has been on the drawing board for several years and appears positioned to cut the cord with Sprint, at least in areas where it offers cable service.

Cox owns 12 megahertz of spectrum licenses covering 76% of its wireline footprint. Cox is using $550 million worth of spectrum space that it bought in the FCC’s Advanced Wireless Services and 700 MHz wireless auctions to build its own 3G EV-DO network. The company said it plans to move up to 4G LTE technology.

Cox has been testing LTE in Arizona and San Diego using its AWS and 700MHz spectrum, but isn’t saying when it intends to introduce service. Their 700 MHz coverage is limited to just 14 “A” blocks, or 6.6 percent of the population, while its 8 “B” blocks cover just 0.6 percent, mostly in it’s cable territories.

Cox was part of the joint partnership called SpectrumCo with other cable operators to buy AWS spectrum. Cox later bailed from that partnership although Comcast and Time Warner still own some $2.37 billion in spectrum on the AWS band (1.7/2.1 GHz).

Cable’s SpectrumCo consortium acquired AWS licenses at low cost in the 2006 FCC auction. Cable operators can now create a true national footprint covering the MSOs’ top cities including New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Just look at the coverage map.

SpectrumCo, the AWS bidding consortium with Cox, Comcast and Time Warner Cable, picked up 137 licenses in 2006’s Advanced Wireless Services auction (at 1.7/2.1 GHz). SpectrumCo won a total of 137 AWS licenses for $2.37 billion. Comcast’s share was $1.29 billion, followed by Time Warner Cable’s $632.2 million, and Cox’s $248.3 million. (See SpectrumCo Gets Licenses). Cox paid $248.3 million for AWS licenses in 2006, and transfered those licenses out of SpectrumCo and directly to Cox.

Significantly, only T-Mobile, Cricket and MetroPCS have activated their AWS spectrum. Neither the cable operators nor AT&T or Verizon have activated any AWS service – yet. T-Mobile is using their spectrum to deliver HSPA+ service, nationwide. AT&T and Verizon, in contrast, paid more than $4 billion for their AWS spectrum — which remains untouched.

Cable operators are currently sitting on their AWS spectrum. Any plans for a nationwide LTE service — run by a consortium of cable operators – have not been announced.

The biggest MSOs – Comcast and T-W Cable – bought into the Clearwire WiMAX franchise. Comcast invested more than $1B and T-W more than $500M into Clearwire with rights to use the 2.6 GHz spectrum. Now it appears that cable operators are cool to investing more in WiMAX.

Cable operators may be forced to show their hand in the next few months as cellcos roll out nationwide LTE service, Clearwire tries to unload spectrum and satphone companies look to partner. Here are some of the players:

  • Nationwide LTE networks from Verizon and AT&T (700MHz)
  • Nationwide HSPA+ network from T-Mobile using AWS (1.7/2.1 GHz)
  • Nationwide WiMAX network from Sprint/Clearwire (2.6 GHz)
  • Potential nationwide satphone/terrestrial service from Lightsquared (1.6 GHz)
  • Potential nationwide cable LTE service using AWS (1.7/2.1 GHz)

How could this shake out? Will the dominance of AT&T/Verizon be broken? Some investors think so. Your guess may be as good as theirs.

Cable companies have at least one big advantage: Hanging microcells from overhead cable is lots cheaper than building towers.
