India is finally getting 3G cellular service from Tata DoCoMo, which launches November 5, when Diwali (festival of lights) is celebrated in India, reports Light Reading.
It will be the first privately owned mobile operator to join state-owned carriers Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. (MTNL) in the 3G services market.
Tata’s “3G Life” service will launch in all nine circles (service areas) where it has 3G spectrum — Kerala, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, UP (West), Punjab, Haryana, and Maharashtra.
“We will cover 51 percent of Indian towns with a population of over a million and 60 percent of towns that have over half-a-million people,” says Anil Sardana, managing director of Tata Teleservices.
Tata DoCoMo launched its GSM services just over a year ago. The operator, is working with Nokia Siemens Networks and Huawei on its 3G rollout, and says its HSPA+ network will support mobile broadband speeds of up to 21.1 Mbit/s.
The recent 3G and 4G auctions in India are beginning to kick in. Other private operators that are set to launch their services during the coming months include See Bharti, Vodafone, Aircel and Reliance.
India’s top mobile firm, Bharti Airtel, No. 2 Reliance Communications, Vodafone, Tata Teleservices, and Idea Cellular spent a combined $23 billion for licenses in recent 3G and 4G spectrum auctions (auction results) in the world’s fastest-growing cellular market.
The Indian telecommunications industry includes some 706 Million telephone (landlines and mobile) subscribers with 670 Million mobile phone connections as of Aug 2010. Virtually none are yet 3G. it is projected that India will have 1.2 billion mobile subscribers by 2013.

If you’re on the hunt for a new house, apartment or just some space to rent or buy then the perfect BlackBerry app for you is now available in BlackBerry App World. Rent.com has come up with a great application with a ton of features built into it. Let’s look at the description:
The free, user-friendly app lets users search for apartments, call or e-mail property owners and manage their favorite listings, right from their mobile phones. The app automatically syncs with each user’s Rent.com account and apartment-hunters can even attach their own photos and notes to listings to help them remember the details of a property after they visit. Plus, once you find the apartment of your dreams through Rent.com, you can report your lease through the app in order to claim your $100 Visa debit rewards card.
Pretty cool app for those on the go and possibly rushing to find a place. It’s never really an easy task so anything that helps with that process is just fine in my books.

Clearwire today announced the launch of WiMax service in New York City and five other markets, including Hartford and New Haven, Connecticut, Tampa, Florida and Trenton and New Brunswick, New Jersey.
Regionally, the New York network serves six counties in North Jersey from Middlesex to Bergen County and the five boroughs of New York City. A detailed coverage map can be found at http://www.clear.com/coverage.
CLEAR starts at $35 for the home while unlimited mobile plans start as low as $45. Bundled service plans such as Home and Voice start at $50 per month.
With today’s announcement, Clearwire’s 4G mobile broadband network now serves 62 markets and covers 82 million people in the U.S.
IPWireless uses unpaired 2.5 GHz frequencies in a dedicated public service network, covering New York City’s 322 square miles (map). The public-safety and city communications network is used for traffic light transmissions, video surveillance and automated meter reading. The IPWireless network is based on TD-CDMA, making it incompatible with TD-LTE or WiMAX. IPWireless claims their unpaired TD-CDMA system penetrates better than OFDM-based LTE or WiMAX and uses less spectrum.
The NYC Wireless Network (NYCWIN), announced in 2006, supports more than 19 municipal departments and more than 50 discrete applications. The network (pdf), consists of approximately 400 cell sites spanning all five of the New York City boroughs, and utilizes licensed 2500 MHz spectrum.
The $500 million NYCWiN network was funded mostly by the city itself; only $20 million came from the Department of Homeland Security.
Clear’s WiMAX network in NYC also operates in the 2.5-2.6 GHz band.
Clear’s WiMAX network was built at no cost to taxpayers. It has the additional advantage of interoperability, voice, increased bandwidth, inexpensive clients, mobile hotspots, and phones like the EVO-4G for 2-way video.
New York’s NYCWIN network uses just 10 MHz of licensed spectrum in the 2.5 GHz band. With CDMA, the same frequency can be used on adjoining sectors. The need for spectral efficiency was one reason Northrup Grumman chose IPWireless as a vendor rather than WiMAX, said Jon Hambidge, vice president of marketing for IPWireless. WiMAX towers generally use 10 MHz per sector (30 MHz total).
NYCWiN became operational in May, 2009, about 18 months earlier than New York City’s WiMAX system goes online for everyone. Interoperability between IPWireless and Clear? Furgetaboutit.
Clear’s WiMAX service hopes to cover 120 million people with interoperable WiMAX broadband by the end of 2010.

Looks like things are falling into place with T-Mobile’s launching of the Galaxy Tab. T-Mo news seems to have gotten word that November 10th is the day of days. This falls on a Wednesday which is T-Mobile’s day of choice to launch products, and it conveniently one-ups Verizon’s Veteran’s Day launch.
If you’re one of the Phandroidians itching to get your hands on this guy, don’t forget to sign up for updates over at T-Mobile!

Earlier today, ALK Technologies officially announced the release of CoPilot Live USA, a powerful GPS application, to the Android Market. CoPilot Live is already a popular iPhone and iPad app, and is also available for other markets on Android, including Europe, South Africa, and Australia.
The application utilizes predictive address matching which suggests addresses as you type, and features millions of Points of Interest (POIs) that come pre-installed.
Another benefit of this app is the fact that all the maps are stored on your phone, meaning you will always have access to them, even when you’re travelling in an area with little to no reception. The one downfall of this, however, is that the app requires roughly 2 gigs of storage to house all the maps.
This app may also be combined with the ActiveTraffic real-time traffic service, which costs just $9.99 for 12-months.
Rate and download: CoPilot Live USA ($4.99)

Having the HTC Droid Incredible in stock must be a little unsettling for Verizon, as no sooner than have shipments began to flow back into their warehouses they have launched a new campaign to help clear them off shelves. The Droid Incredible is now being offered as part of a “Buy One Get Any Phone Free” campaign. It may even be one of your last good chances to get ahold of one if you are still looking, as the slew of new high-end Android handsets headed to Verizon this holiday season should only serve to bump the Incredible closer to falling out of VZW’s lineup. Check out the new commercial below.

As you all know I have been a bit pessimistic about Nokia and North America, but then wrote the post about not caring too much because I am a fanboy who is sticking with them anyway. It turns out that Nokia wasn’t just giving lip service to North America and is actually taking steps to reach out. They just announced the Calling All Innovators, North America contest in partnership with AT&T and are having a full Nokia Developer Day at CTIA in early October. I may just have to start developing apps so I can get a Nokia N8 developer pack too ![]()
This contest follows the very successful one that concluded at Nokia World 2010 and is designed for developers around the world to create apps for North American consumers. AT&T and Nokia will be the judges of the apps and each developer participating in the CTIA developer session, held in October, will receive a Nokia N8 developer pack from Nokia.
As stated by Purnima Kockikar, VP Forum Nokia:
The commitment from Nokia is a clear message that we are serious about the North American market. Developers have the tools, the support from AT&T and the marketing power of Nokia to get visibility for their apps. Additionally, developers can make their Qt-based app available in Ovi Store to Nokia customers globally reaching tens of millions of customers.
There are 17 categories for app submission and consumers will contribute to finalist selection with the number of downloads counting towards part of the winning criteria. Will AT&T be getting the Nokia N8 officially? It seems that we are going to need devices here to download these candidate apps and I can’t imagine Nokia wants us using the Nokia E71x to do so.

it’s been a couple of weeks since we heard about the Motorola XT720 heading to Canada’s smallish carrier Wind Mobile, and now that time has come: you can grab the device up now for $430. It comes packed with a 3.7-inch WVGA touchscreen, an 8-megapixel autofocus camera with xenon flash and HD video recording, Android 2.1, WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, HDMI out, and a 768MHz processor. We reviewed the version of the phone for Cincinnati Bell Wireless here in the states not too long ago.
While the software may differ between the two version, be sure to check the review out for a decent idea on how this thing performs (we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.) Head on over to Wind now if you like what you see. [via Into]

Another day, another phone. Today’s daily dose of Android comes from European carrier, Orange. The phone is made by the hands of ZTE, and will run on Android 2.1, which is not so bad, considering this phone will not exactly be a “high-end” device. The phone, which has been dubbed “San Francisco” (um… okay?), will tout a 600MHz processor, along with a 3.5 inch OLED touchscreen, with a resolution of 400×800. Not too shabby for a mid-range device, but other specs, like a 3.2 megapixel camera, may make you hold onto your cash for a bit longer. The device will cost $154 on a pay as you go contract, so if any of you guys with Orange out there plan on springing the money for this device, be sure to let us know.

Peapod users rejoice! The popular service has now launched a mobile app on Android. If you’re not familiar with Peapod, it’s basically grocery shopping for people who are either too busy or too lazy to actually go shopping. I fall into both these categories and have used Peapod religiously for 3 years. Peapod releasing an app for Android basically completes all my grocery shopping wants and needs. The Peapod Mobile app allows for pretty much everything you can do on their website and also picks up a few additional features. I am in the midst of playing with it now and I must say its pretty slick. A review will be forthcoming. Peapod Mobile is available for free in the Android Market. Go get it! Hit the jump for a QR code or AppBrain install link.

Nokia Launches Check-ins on Ovi Maps, Takes Location and Privacy Seriously
Nokia debuted a new feature for its Ovi Maps service at this week’s Nokia World 2010 event in London: check-ins . But, thankfully, the company isn’t hopping on the bandwagon of location-based social sharing with its own self-branded service (also known as “yet another social network I have to sign up for.”) Instead, Nokia is taking the idea of location seriously, enabling real-time social …

While I can’t say that I frequently use the voice search feature of Android, apparently there are a lot of people that do. According to the latest post in the Google Mobile blog, one of every four searches from an Android phone is by voice. (In case you flunked math 1/4 = 25%)
That’s a pretty large number and I personally would’ve never guessed it to be that high. Google realizes this and has launched a new youtube channel almost dedicated to new uses for voice search. Check out the video and link to their channel after the break. But before the break, did you know TalkAndroid has a YouTube channel?: youtube.com/talkandroid (and Facebook and Twitter)

Wal-Mart has launched a mobile phone plan under its own brand, expanding its offerings in the low-cost cell-phone market, reports Information Week.
Wal-Mart Family Mobile, introduced Monday, offers unlimited talking and texting for $45 a month, with each additional line costing $25 a month. T-Mobile USA is the network service provider. WalMart, of course, does not own cellular infrastructure. It buys time wholesale and retails service as a virtual operator.
The new plan, available only in the U.S., does not require a long-term service contract. It will be offered starting Sept. 20 at all of Wal-Mart’s nearly 2,500 stores.
The plan offers data in buckets, rather than for a monthly fee. The first 100 MB are at no additional charge. Subscribers who need more data can pay $10 for 200 MB, $25 for 500 MB, or $40 for 1,000 MB. International calls to several countries start at 5 cents per minute.
Wal-Mart said it would offer mobile phones from Motorola, Nokia, and Samsung, including phones running Google’s Android operating system.
The devices would range in price from the Nokia 1661 for $34.96 to the Motorola Clique XT for $249, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The Motorola Clique is the only smartphone in the plan. Data is pricey — each new line comes with 100MB of data, but it costs $40 for an additional 1GB of data – that compares with $25 for 2 GB on AT&T’s data plan. Unused data never expires, however, and their are no contracts or early termination fees.
Wal-Mart also offers separate mobile phone plans through each of the major U.S. carriers, including AT&T, Sprint Nextel, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile USA. In May, Sprint Nextel launched a pay-by-the-minute plan through Wal-Mart.
Called Common Cents Mobile, subscribers pay seven cents a minute for calls and the same amount per text message. Mobile phone prices range from $20 to $70.
